foreign trailers hooked up and we've got some plywood some blocks a jack some chains and binders ready to go in the morning [Music] so basically the story with this tractor is the guy we bought it from bought it with a seized engine the seized engine he removed it and that's the one that's on the front of the trailer then he swapped in a used engine but he went to go turn over the used engine and there were a couple seized valves so when he turned it over it bent some push rods and then he took the head off couldn't get the valves out he said and was sick of working on it so this tractor was pretty much a basket case the head was taken off it came with a bunch of extra parts which is nice and it basically needed new all-new rear tires and rims well here's the Oliver we just got home it was four hours back home it's a lot of traffic so the Oliver 70 row crop I think it's a 1937 and the engines in 1938 then this is the original engine the 1937 engine that was in it originally that the guy took out pretty much all we've done to the Oliver is Jack it up and clean it off you can see we got the head service looking good now we're gonna put the head on okay this is the head for the 70. so I'm gonna take a good look at these valve seats they look pretty good this one's the worst one and then we have 12 valve seals the things that go around the seals 12 sets of Keepers and 12 retaining things and 12 Springs valves may be cleaned by holding them against a wire brush mounted on a grinder [Applause] [Music] foreign [Music] foreign so the small valves are exhaust so I'm going to show one of each and a seal foreign cover I guess that's what that is then a spring then on the exhaust valves you just use regular retainer thing two retainers boom exhaust done and then keep her with the rubber I'm just going to reuse this old gasket because gasket kits now the only ones I can get are from Steiner and the ones from the one from Steiner's 300 bucks and the one from Riley is 200 bucks but the one from Riley's not available now they're back ordered [Music] foreign I said fell oh these head bolts get 65 foot-pounds except for the two corners by the spark plugs they get 50. foreign [Music] [Music] foreign foreign is on the wrong way it should be shrouding out like this but it's inside out so radiator is going to have to all get pulled off so I was just working at the oil lines here and I noticed the end of this the governor housing here there's like no bushing the bushing's gone yeah that's no good so I'm gonna have to pull that all off and put on good thing I have one of the rebuilt ones but I'm gonna have to rebuild another so when you're installing these uh Governor covers you want to make sure that this plug is in the back that covers the bushing and make sure there's no play here I'm gonna double check that my timing marks are correct [Music] there's the marks you can see two on the governor gear and one on the crankshaft I mean camshaft gear which then connects to that crankshaft gear make sure [Music] all right make sure there's no weird noises and it still spins so as you can see I got the rocker assembly on now I'm setting the valves I just did these three I'll walk through doing this one you gotta spin that engine over put a breaker bar on the front and that's the intake valve opening intake valve closing now we should be approaching top dead center you can put a screwdriver in and wait or you can just look in the cylinder and right when it starts going down is close enough now break the adjusting lock nuts loose these are all way too tight for some reason sure why in the manual it says between 10 and 12 thousands so I'm going to 11 . get it set and then tighten the lock nut double check you have to drop everything on the ground at least six times otherwise you won't set the valves right I have the valves a little bit loose it's better to have them a little loose than tight because if they're too tight they'll hold the valves open and you could burn up a valve a little bit loose it might make a little bit of ticking noise foreign [Applause] here's the new gasket it's a cork gasket you put silicone on one side and then just grease on the other side because you have to take the valve cover off again to recheck valves after a break-in and re-torque head bolts [Music] this side with the holes this side with the holes goes toward the front where a breather goes [Music] perfect I'm gonna put nuts on those and then next step is going to be figuring out all the oil so I'm gonna drain out the oil put on the oil filter and get my oil lines figured out and I'll come back and show what I do after I finish that okay here's what I've got for the oil lines so this is the port in the block that oil pressure comes out and I just put a t here and then 3 16 nikop brake line to the gauge and then this is the original line to the governor and then in the head here it comes down to the water pump but this is an actual pressurized line it's just the extra stuff from up here drains down into here and then slowly feeds the water pump here's the Wix number for the oil filter it's a little tricky to find these filters they have them from Steiner but I don't know what brand it is it's just a white filter so Wix is pretty good usually got a little lubricant on the O-ring foreign the finest Tractor Supply 10w30 conventional oil it's been about four months since I last worked on this Oliver so let's get this manifold on here we've got a new stud and all the rest of them are good [Music] all right the manifold's on now let's put the distributor on so this is a six cylinder engine based on the John Deere two cylinders it's easy you just put it in one way and if it doesn't work you turn it and you're good but on the six cylinder it's a little more complicated so cylinder number one to the front I put a bar on the engine put my thumb over the spark plug hole and then feel for when air starts coming out that means it's on compression stroke then you look in the hole with a flashlight and once the Piston gets to the top top dead center of number one then you stop so then come to the distributor cap to find number one which on this case it is right there and then we turn the rotor so it points to number one where it would contact on the cap and then come over and look then if you look here it's angled like that and our distributor is about angled the same way so we know we probably are right so we can put it on and you have a little adjustment that way for well the clip cut off but I was going to say you have a little bit of adjustment to fine-tune the timing now here I'm just installing the governor rods and the carburetor as well as the muffler up there that's gonna be enough [Music] installing this gas tank was quite a struggle it just barely fits in there I guess it's a lot easier to put it on and take it off when the engine's not in the way and we actually ended up putting that strap that holds it on in the wrong spot it's supposed to go over the back the one further to the back of the tractor and then the the one towards the front of the tractor is where the hood Mouse now let's talk about some electrical I got new bat I made new battery cables the ground just comes right over to here so there's a short cable from the positive that goes to the push button the big push button and then from the other end of that obviously goes to the battery then uh battery side of the push button comes over to the amp meter on the other side of the amp meter it goes to the light switch and to the coil here so that's pretty much all you need to get it running you don't have to hook up the lights so I'm just going to hook up the coil right now and then maybe it'll fire so I have the wire to the coil just going directly to the battery see if it starts on starting fluid obviously the radiator is not hooked up and there's no fuel line I forgot to hook up the throttle all right uh it's been firing I don't wanna just keep cranking it but this is good it's just what I wanted to hear all right I got the fuel system pretty much done on this tractor so I have a 90 going to reduce her to a little valve using a ball valve and a fuel filter and an inline filter is a lot simpler than using a sediment bowl and a lot less likely to leak and then I just have this nikop line going to the carb so I said I would talk about the wheels the rims and tires on this Farmall 70. so now is later and I'm going to tell you what the deal is so it came it had these cast centers on it one of the cast centers had this junk rim and tire on it so we got both of those off but the guy had two of these nine bolt hubs with it those nine ball hubs were not on it he just bought them planning to use them but never did then he on it on one of the side had a different Hub in addition to that cast Center and it had this 10 38 rim with a drunk Tire on it so we got that tire off got it patched up with some fiberglass painted and primed then on the other side we have to get the axle seal on then we can put the Hub on and then here's the other Rim we got this Rim at McFadden's it had a junk Tire on it so we took the tire off painted the reason we painted these with this ugly color is because we just had an extra can of it we got it for free at the paint store so these hubs did not have lug bolts in them when we got them so we bought new lug bolts which they're not cheap and we also got a 9 16 by 18 tap to tap out all the holes huh [Music] foreign [Music] so it's been a while since I worked on the Oliver pretty much all I've done is make an alternator bracket so I went on Amazon and searched for Ford 8N 12 volt conversion kit comes with it's like a hundred bucks maybe 120 comes with an alternator a bracket a top mount some wires and a ballast resistor pretty much all I did was Notch those two holes because I did have it in the bottom there but it was gonna interfere it was going to interfere with the lower radiator pipe so I moved it up and I'm gonna add a piece that comes down there maybe one there and for now I just have this piece of threaded Rod since I don't have a bolt long enough foreign I got it on got all the hoses on all the clamps on and the plug all right I'm gonna fill it up with water now just water not not coolant yet because it's probably gonna leave [Applause] looks like we've got a leak coming from this hose well it turns out the water pump's actually leaking so that's unfortunate got a new radiator cap so this is going to be my first time trying to start a tractor on its own fuel now at the time I did not realize it but the reason the truck would not run right is because it had a giant intake manifold leak I after putting on a used manifold that was not warped and using intake gasket sealer it ran like a top I was actually able to get the tractor running with the intake leaking good enough to drive it around but it was not running on all six cylinders foreign now we're almost ready to take it for its first drive you can see I unhooked the oil pressure line hooked up this temporary hose coming to this OTC pressure test gauge so this is a known good gauge because we're showing zero oil pressure on this cheap Indian gauge I'm just cleaning stuff up around the tractor then we can drive it foreign so the transmissions on these Olivers hold six and a half gallons we had about three and a half gallons of diesel fuel in it for the last couple months [Music] [Applause] so it's currently 7 30 p.m and we have to leave for a tractor pull around 7 30 a.m so let's get ready so right now the plan is to try and take the Oliver 70 and John Deere H got a battery in the Oliver turn the fuel on [Music] so we just put the hood on it and took the muffler from the Alice Chalmers and this tractor should be good to go tomorrow all right it's the next morning we got the H loaded up also got the holes drilled in the wheelie bars or cut with the torch now let's see if we can fit the Oliver it's like it was made to be fits perfect we can even put the ramps up so we're here at the Bridgewater Fair got the tractors unloaded weighed them in the H weighed 23.80 and the Oliver weighed 34. 50 I think so the Oliver was going good and then we were hooked up to 4 000 pounds and it just didn't have it wasn't getting enough fuel I think because I don't think this is the right carburetor for it I'd say that was successful for the first time doing an antique tractor pull and we'll definitely do a lot better next time so I just finished rebuilding the Oliver 70 carb for the third time and this is actually another different carburetor the reason I'm using all these different ones is because the ones I have been using you can't tell the numbers on them so I don't know if they're the right ones so I think my problem is I have too small of a carburetor on and it's not getting enough fuel but based on the numbers on this one and the Oliver Parts manuals this should be the right carb and I cleaned it out as thorough as I could so let's throw it on and hopefully we can go to the Terryville Fair tractor pull tomorrow in Connecticut foreign I got the carburetor installed now let's see if we made it better or worse foreign well there's our problem intake manifolds leaking sucking second air right in there so I guess let's get started tearing this thing apart see if we can get a new manifold on it or a new used manifold got the muffler off and you can see the gaps there look at that that's one of the intake ports look at that Gap so unfortunately I kind of destroyed the old manifold gasket but check that out that's not gonna seal no matter what gasket you use unfortunately the other manifold I have well I guess fortunately it is better unfortunately it's not perfect so I've got an old flap disc here and I'm going to lightly resurface this still working on the Oliver getting ready for the pull just got the manifold back from the Machine Shop resurfacing it that's professional and we don't have a new gasket either but as long as it works this weekend I'll be happy so the hardest part about changing one of these manifolds is tightening all these bolts with a just an open end wrench I mean nuts but the silicone is dry or it is drying so we'll have to wait for it to finish setting up and then try and run it all right the ceilings had a while to cure see if it starts foreign s are way too high I have to turn it down a lot but the choke is off which is very good this thing has never run more smooth no joke idling [Music] so I think the Oliver runs well enough at least probably 10 times better than it ran before so we got it on the trailer with the H and we're heading to Terryville tomorrow morning foreign [Applause] [Music] [Applause] foreign [Applause] [Applause] with every tractor pull we do we'll find more things that we can improve on the Oliver to make it pull a little bit better so we measured the hitch and we could move it both further in and further up of course having it down further puts you at a disadvantage because pulling up on the weight puts more force on the rear wheels and less friction on the sled so what I did was cut this out of some plate which moves the hitch in further but some some clubs don't like that so I also drilled the hole in the drawbar to move it in a couple inches now for moving the hitch up I'm going to use these category zero three-point top links so that it can be adjusted so there's the two top links installed the rule local to us is 18 inch hitch height which they are both at then you have to be at least 25 inches behind the center of the rear axle and I also took the belt pulley off here it is I didn't even realize it but it wasn't even bolted in it was just sitting there so the idea with that is we can take those 60 pounds that are towards the front of the tractor and move it to right above the wheels then this doesn't affect the pulling performance of course but those grilles make it look a little bit better more complete and this sick doppity dope intake adds at least 40 to 50 horsepower now for actually putting the weight above the axles at the last pole you saw we just stacked suitcase weights on top of the hitch but this time I welded those pieces of angle iron so I can put these 150 pound wheel weights and then also another 100 pound suitcase weight so that's three plus the two so 500 and then 150 pound wheel weight on each side brings you to 800 and then we can lay two suitcase weights right there for a thousand pounds bring in the 3 500 pound tractor to the 4 500 pound class so the reason I want to compete in the 4 500 pound class is because this tractor has a lot of the weight above the front wheel with that engine so what that does is because the center of mass of this tractor to be further forward by competing in the higher weight class I can put all the weight at or behind the rear axle which brings the center of mass further back right above the wheels which is what we want and this tractor has plenty of power to compete in the higher weight class all right this is the last tractor pull this season up at Saddle view farm in Bethel Bethany Connecticut this track is really hard it's got a lot of really good traction but also the chain to the back of the sled is really short so here in 3 500 pound class I got fifth place ran out of traction here in 4 500 pound class side like I said the chain is really short so it pulls down on the back of the tractor and we're also running 20 inch hitch height so we're just popping a wheelie there with all the weight on the with a thousand pounds on the wheelie bars so I moved 300 pounds to the middle still should have had more up front could have pulled it further I didn't Blaze I think I got seven three years 5500 pounds this is the first time pulling 500 pounds with this tractor did pretty good still could add more weight in the front I ended up getting fifth place in this class which actually surprised me so I did pretty well it was a lot of fun really I like putting the tractor to Goose rather than it just sitting in the garage at home I put the throttle down too fast there and it stalled all right I'm gonna wrap up this video here the Oliver tractor runs we did quite a bit to this tractor there's still some more work I could do to it to make it do a little better in the tractor pulls some of the upgrades I have in mind are one bigger tires looking for a set of 13 6 36 field and Roads same tread pattern as this and I also need rims to go with it that go on the nine bolt hubs the budget is pretty tight for those so looking for a deal either 13 6 36 is worth 13 6 38s so anyway thanks for watching and stay tuned for the next one
