all right we're getting ready to go to the searle canyon red barrel mine this was a great trip and if you stick around until the middle of the video you can see how to screen for red barrel and if you stick around until the end you can see the great findings that we had and it cost 90 per adult and the kids were free and should be really fun we're excited to go see what we can find and we're just about five miles or so past the the topaz mountain turn off which kept drove past it on the brush wellman road and uh we're gonna go check out the searle canyon red barrel mine so hopefully we'll find some some good stuff where's everybody from all right we're walking up to the red barrel mine and we're following john holford and he and jeremy fuller wrote a book called a field guide to topaz and associated minerals of the thomas range and i'll include a link to that in the description right now we're walking through an area with some of the highest concentrations of topaz in the entire thomas range they're crunch berries those are garnets and red barrel will attach to those yeah so it's pseudomorph garnet so the garnet was once a regular specific almondine garnet periodically and then it gets altered because of the highly do not uh continue to react when the rock turns rock and basically it'll uh make these go into a pseudomorph which means it's changed into a new minute so this is a highly oxidizing environment so it had multiple shots of fluid that came up in these seams and so you had the guard at first and then you had the barrel you don't have to worry about uh fluids that came up and yeah and toe fast fluids that came up that alternative this is the time when we do garnet since it's always pretty rare that's jeremy fuller we're checking out the searle canyon red barrel mine and down in there is where they're doing a lot of digging super excited to get digging so it just seems that you're after not the votes well there's bugs along those seams okay because right in the seams doesn't necessarily mean you're gonna get a bug in a mineralization a lot of times you get them off the string or stringers off the sides there's two kinds of seams here there's mineralized and post mineralization that one there is post mineralization meaning it happened long after you know maybe because of the earth movement and it's not mineralized yeah if you put it under short wave it'll fluoresce kind of a magenta color oh cool i just found a garnet right garnet [Music] maybe if i clean it up i'll find some red barrel on there you may or may not yeah [Music] hold this screen what you want to do first you want to take the big rocks you want to look at them first you go through the big rocks like gold panic yeah it's like old panning get rid of the big rocks you got to do bigger big to small so i just look at them kind of rolling around on my fingers i don't look super close at them because if there's a barrel it's more rare on the rock first of all and uh you don't want to spend too much time on it you want to get to the more efficient efficient uh material bubble cap so right here see there's a tow pass where are you putting all this gonna have a little container everybody forgets containers he's gonna hold it for now i'll hand you all these goodies so any clear topaz yeah we'll get clear tokens here you get mostly sandy but down the hill you get really good topaz but you don't get uh barrel so we're after the barrel here so the topaz is a bonus basically so if you want good tofas i'll show you a good spot just down the hill like i'd like that the kids would probably like it too because they have a zone where there's amethyst too so you get amethyst in the rock yeah and then you get topaz with the amethyst because they're in amethyst cavities yeah yeah i'd like to see that i'll show you guys usually john shows people when you're walking up because it's on the way up but it's just right over the hump here it's not very far let's find you a barrel though first oh there's a barrel see it see it pretty obvious where is it right there yep bam and it's a it's got some glassy faces on it your first barrel man you want to show your your dad on the camera he's slightly color blind oh is he sometimes i still finding him though yeah uh john sun's colorblind and he finds him like he's really good she looks for the shine so you look you look for the shape too so they're hexagonal so they're six-sided that's kind of exciting thank you nice job man that's a nice one let's see how pink that is so what's neat about that crystal is there's different types of crystals so that's uh that's the one of the pinker one so barrel has iron in it red barrel has iron and if it's in a hot spot it becomes like that hot pink color and that's because it burned out all the iron out of the barrel so originally it was really red and then it was in a super hot spot when it formed and burned all the iron out so that's why it's pink i call those hot pink barrels and they're my favorite so good job good find you're gonna want a container you want maybe you got a something for you you got a bag yeah put it put it put it in the bag so the other way you might drop it you don't want to drop that one oh that's the keeper that's definitely that's a big one they get bigger i mean our our biggest one that we've got from here is 5 8 of an inch on an edge you kidding no that's huge oh that's huge for a barrel oh my god i mean average you're probably about quarter inch that's an average but we've had them up to five eighths of an inch but first spin first barrel so how much have you gotten what's the highest you've gotten out of a borough it's one of those three questions yeah i mean i sold one recently for over three grand wow but um we've sold one for about i think six thousand that's huge do they make jewelry yeah they make jewelry but this was a mineral specimen type deal it was a combination piece with a uh it had topaz with the barrel i had garnet or i had big garnet pseudomorph and had bixby ice i had to have been a great bug you got it had everything all right here's another crunch berry let's see there's a new barrel on it pretty cool and kind of uh alter so the rock has a high concentration of feldspar and it kind of alters into the feldspar and it creates these bugs so it's kind of friable kind of looks like it's soft and see this is where we get the barrel so this is barrel producing rock doesn't necessarily mean there's barrel in it but that's where you you would get a barrel is in rock like this you have the hematite so that's a that's an iron oxide crystals and so they're kind of uh they're more kind of flat crystals are pretty thin and fragile yeah but you'll find that along the seams so did that just come off this wall right here yeah it came down from over here so right right nearby so that's where one of the barrel that your son probably found was in rock it's just very similar to this that's awesome that got dislodged basically that's pretty so what's what's on there red barrel and tofu yeah red barrel topaz on a pseudomorph garnet that is awesome good work pseudomorph garnet has feldspar and hematite and it pretty much probably has still a little bit of a garnet core inside if you broke it open which i wouldn't just get here are our findings from the day and you'll notice there are a lot of crunch berries or pseudomorph gardens and a lot of them have bixbytes on them so if you look here you can see pieces of bixbyte on them and then here is one that actually has a cluster of xvi in it along with some topaz and then there is a piece of bixby just by itself and then over here are some pieces of topaz with red barrel on them and then here are some individual pieces of red barrel and you'll notice that some of them have black crystals or hematite on them and then over here are some pieces of topaz with bixby eight on them so those are a few of our finds from our trip to searle canyon red barrel mine and if any of you would like a crunch berry please like and subscribe and the first five people to like and subscribe and let me know in the comments i will figure out a way to get you a crunch berry so thanks for watching everybody
