in today's video i want to teach you how to land your very first web design client with no experience let's go [Music] welcome back to another video my name is peyton smith and i'm excited about this video because we're talking sales okay now for a lot of you web designers sales is something that doesn't get a whole lot of attention but it really is the lifeblood of your business it doesn't matter how good of a web designer you might be if you're not good at selling your services and getting clients you're not going to be able to support yourself and you're going to end up going back to the other job that you left rather than pursuing your dream of being a web designer so i want to dive right into some really actionable steps that i would take if i were in your situation and you have not yet landed your first official client and maybe you don't have any experience yet i'm gonna tell you exactly what i would do if i was in your situation so the first thing that we need to do is resolve the issue of you not having any experience now we all start somewhere right i started with zero experience and that's okay you don't need to lie your way into your first client to get that experience you can get that experience on your own and so the first thing that you're going to do is you're going to go out and find a local business website whether that's in your area or anywhere else in the world you're going to find one that's really struggling and then you're going to recreate that website and make it look much better than it did before now what this is going to do is it's going to give you kind of a before and after of what it's going to be like to work with you and you're going to be able to deliver a website that while it may not be the best work you're ever going to deliver it's going to be much better than the one before now take your time on this it shouldn't take more than a week or two again don't be a perfectionist on this but having this sample website is going to be the key to being able to sell your first client on working with you now if you're wondering where you need to go to be able to build this website you can check this video right here above i'll also link it below where you can learn how to use webflow to build your websites so once your website is complete the next thing you're going to need to do is go to calendly.com and create a free calendar link now this is going to be really important because this is how your prospects are going to contact you if they're interested in hiring you having a calendar link like this makes you seem really official and it also makes people respect your time right so when we are reaching out to people or posting on social media they need to have a link that they can click see your calendar book a strategy call or whatever you want to call it and get in touch with you and so go to calendly.com create a free calendar link and then we're going to be ready to start taking the next steps now once you've got that sample website and you've got your calendar link we're going to put those things together and we're going to craft a very specific message that you can then post on social media now obviously social media is going to be the fastest and most efficient way for you to get your sample site in front of as many people as possible not only are there a lot of business owners on social media but also with the way that things are right now everybody's starting their own side gig or side hustle and so there are a ton of people out there that need web design services and so by posting this on social media you're going to a notify all of your close family and friends that you are now offering web design services which could get you your first client right off the bat but b it's going to allow them to re-share this post which is something that your family and friends should do hopefully is re-share that post and then not only are you going to reach all of your facebook friends but you're going to reach all the facebook friends of your close family and friends and so you can see how that's going to grow really quickly and get in front of as many eyes as possible so this message that you're going to post on social media should be really really brief and really straightforward now the goal is we want this to feel really authentic to people and so what you're going to do is you're going to share the reason that you have gotten into web design maybe you're going to say something to the effect of i've always loved design and i just got into web design and i am now officially offering web design services to business owners and individuals it's something that i love to do and i hope to be able to work with some of you and then you're going to post your website and your calendar link so when somebody sees this post they can click and get on your calendar now remember with this social media post it doesn't have to be anything special but the hardest part about this is going to be clicking post you're going to be feeling a lot of imposter syndrome you're going to be worried about putting yourself out there and you might even be worried about people actually reaching out and wanting to hire you you may not feel ready and those are all natural feelings but don't shy away from this this is the first step to getting your name out there and landing that first client so you can get more real experience under your belt so if you're feeling any sort of hesitation or you're nervous about this just push through it and click post and i promise you'll be glad that you did all right so we've done the hardest part right we've created a website and gotten a little bit of experience and we have posted this out to everybody on social media and so you're probably feeling pretty nervous right now maybe a little bit exhilarated it's a really exciting thing that this is the first official announcement of your new business as a web designer so now that you've done this the prospects may not be rolling in on your calendar link starting right at day one and it may take a week or a month there's no way to know but because of that what we want to do is now shift our focus to something a little bit more actionable that we can have control over and that is just opening our mouth and talking to business owners that we interact with on a daily basis so the next thing that i want to challenge you to do is take out a piece of paper your laptop whatever it is and write down 10 businesses that you frequent on a monthly basis right so for me when i did this originally it was you know the gym the cafe you know our favorite local restaurant maybe your dentist your insurance agent whoever it is that you visit you need to make a list of those and then determine which three or four of those you could visit in the coming week okay so make plans and say okay you know i'm gonna go to the gym during this next week and i'm going to make it a goal to open my mouth and talk to the manager or the owner of the gym about their website now this might seem nerve-wracking and i don't want you to feel like you're going on some sort of sales call but really what you're doing is you are getting yourself used to having the courage to talk about what you do without shying away or without coming across as salesy now you don't need to go in there hot trying to hard close the you know the owner of the gym but instead go in there with just a simple question say hey i noticed that your website has not been updated in the last couple years when were you guys planning to update that or maybe you just walk in and say hey just so you know i offer web design services if you guys never need anything on your website i'd be happy to take a look just simple conversation starters like these can lead to a ton of opportunities and you don't even have to be salesy you don't have to be pushy you don't have to be smooth really it's just opening your mouth is going to open so many different opportunities and build so many relationships that could lead to clients either tomorrow or two years from now there's no way to know but again this is going to be the best practice for you to start articulating what it is that you do and just getting your name out there great so at this point you have put yourself out there on social media and you've given people some of your sample work to look at and a way to contact you and you're starting to open your mouth with just local businesses that you frequent the best part about this is both of these strategies are very low stress right you're not gonna have to worry about people being mean to you or people saying no or screaming at you i promise you the owner of your gym is not going to yell you out of the gym because you're his customer right so they're going to be willing to listen to you and the very worst case scenarios they're going to say no thank you and i think you're going to be able to survive that so now that you've done this you've got a lot of great resources okay you've got your sample site you've got your calendar link you're starting to develop skills and confidence in articulating what it is that you do and so now you're going to want to start looking for other opportunities what i would suggest is start sharing what it is that you do on all of your social media and even more specifically i would go try to join a couple facebook groups you can join facebook groups based on you know different industries maybe you go join a group full of i don't know landscape companies or something like that or maybe you go for a more location-based facebook group which is what i would recommend and for example i've got a couple facebook groups within my area here that is for local businesses and then there's like a buy and sell facebook group and these are great opportunities to take that sample link and share your work with other people maybe you post a message that says hey check out a website that i did for another local business if you have any questions i'd be happy to help you out you know these are really easy ways to provide value share what it is that you do and then not be spammy but be willing to interact in conversations and provide value to those groups anything that you can do to get in front of more people as early as possible is going to be the best way to land that client now the thing that we need to remember is sales is a numbers game and what that means is the more people that you talk to the more people that see your face hear your voice see your work the better chance you have of landing that next client and especially early on when you don't have all of the experience or the case studies or the website or really anything to go off of the best thing that you can do is get in front of as many people as possible until you find that one person that's willing to give you a shot now the last thing that i would say is that first client is always the hardest because you don't know what the heck you're doing and maybe you're not very smooth at articulating what it is that you do or the process or you don't know how to collect payment or you don't know how to do anything and that's okay because we all need that first client that's willing to give us an environment where we can fail we can make mistakes we can maybe not be the most professional and that's okay those are the types of clients that normally don't expect to pay as much and that's okay if we're not charging as much for our first client but getting that first one under our belt is the best thing that you can do to just get yourself out there get more experience and then begin to grow your business so if you're interested in learning more about my sales process and everything that my team is doing to land web design clients on a weekly basis my new course web design sales mastery is launching here in just a few weeks and right now it is in a discounted business how to do great sales calls how to close these prospects and turn them into paying clients and in this course i even have several live sales calls that we've recorded and broken down for you
