this summer that will never happen again uh i can't arrange this so anybody who comes on a church history tournament this will never happen again but we were coming out of we were driving you can it's about a four-hour drive from palmyra to kirtland and you go through niagara falls so we were just leaving niagara falls and all of a sudden these fighter jets i was actually texting john during this because these fighters start flying around buffalo new york i mean really low to the ground and i'm going what is going on and it was a blue angels show what we got to sit and watch while we drove on the interstate good 20 minutes they just were going oh yeah it's like almost like ranger so my whole the whole bus of people was just watching a blue angels show as we left buffalo it was just a special cool thing that you know you never could arrange something right right i told them i did that's how much full service you get on these tours yeah they got the memo they got my uh they got my message i put this on for you guys yeah it was actually for buffalo they were doing a show from the city of buffalo and it was sold out we got dan we got great stuff that is so cool what an experience what an experience well i i'm gonna have to come on one of these church history tours with you one of these times so i mean but only but only if you can arrange the blue angels so okay yeah i will kill him again i love it well man thank you again for being on the fire side so excited to hear your thoughts go ahead and take it away my friend absolutely hi everybody happy sunday evening to you hopefully you're sitting with someone sitting by someone you love and and enjoying yourself or you're uh sitting uh in a nice quiet home maybe you're by yourself and you're like ah i'm at peace right that's that's the hope is that you're sitting here having a wonderful experience uh if not i hope that something one of us says tonight will be a great blessing and will bring peace to your mind i know i love listening to megan and john speak uh and i'm i'm praying for them as i know they're they're praying for me when i saw the topic uh tonight um feeling how do you feel the savior's love i thought about the times where um sometimes we don't feel the savior's love and we think for some reason you know that that we're not loved by heaven but sometimes it's our own fault right sometimes not all the time but sometimes we're we've made a dumb decision right let me show you a few dumb decisions here like uh this this kid right here this is uh he you wouldn't say you wouldn't look at this and say right that jesus did this to me no no this is just sometimes we don't think through decisions right are you sitting by someone who doesn't think through their decisions sometimes that's okay just maybe give them a little elbow not hard just enough to bruise and remind them that this isn't heaven's fault that you're about to get hurt pretty badly that sometimes we make dumb decisions sometimes we make very public dumb decisions right i've done this maybe you've done this look at this next one this is a very public dumb decision right where you're like i i just didn't think through it now you wouldn't look up to heaven and say why don't you love me um heaven would say we do love you up here and you did this right we didn't you didn't think you didn't think through it sometimes we're just in the wrong place at the wrong time look at this next picture sometimes it's just life smacks you in the face you ever had this happen to you you're just going along and you're doing your very best and you just weren't paying attention to something and it smacks your heart in the face hopefully that's not a time where you say heaven doesn't love me heaven absolutely loves you right uh and that this is sometimes a part of life and sometimes we make really expensive bad choices look at this next one this is a very expensive bad choice right where it's like oh i just you know it's really it's a really great picture by the way those of us who get to kind of witness this um as he's out front going how what did i do right that is sometimes just life sometimes life happens and we wouldn't say that that heaven doesn't love us i hope that none of you listening when when things happen either by your own choice or just you know you're in the wrong place at the wrong time hopefully you'll never say oh heaven doesn't love me heaven does love you and this is um difficulty is definitely a part of life i'm going to show you one of my favorite scripture stories this is a woman from mark chapter 5. so go to this next slide here most of you will already know this story um there's a woman it says in mark chapter 5 who had a certain issue of blood for 12 years she said she has some sort of blood disease some sort of blood problem and as most of you already know if you study the bible that blood is considered unclean and so she's going to have she's going to be prohibited from participating in quite a few um quite a few things that have to do with her religion um and it's been 12 years this is not a this is not a you know i got sick for a couple of weeks or even months this is 12 years that she has this she has this uh blood disease it says that she tried everything in mark chapter 5 26 says she had tried everything and spent all of her money trying to get better she had done everything she could uh but instead it got worse i don't know if you've ever tried hard to fix your own problems and difficulties and instead of getting better it got worse right and now she's out of money um and it says when she heard of jesus she came in the press the press is the crowd behind this is mark chapter 5 verse 27 to touch his garment and because because she thought to herself if i can touch his clothes i shall be whole um it says now this is the part i want you to see this is the part i thought about when when i saw the topic tonight mark chapter 5 29 straightway the fountain of her blood was dried up she knew her disease was gone she felt in her body that she was healed of that plague right no one else knew it you couldn't see it it's this isn't like the leper who's cleansed and you can see him or the blind man who's healed uh that everybody can kind of witness what's what's happening this is something that she feels healed she feels healed and our topic tonight is feeling the savior's love and how did she how did she feel his love she reached out to him um she went to him oftentimes we want god to show us how much he loves us first before we reach out to him right and that seems that we've got the order uh we've got the order wrong she says if i can just reach out to him he'll come back to me right i shall be made whole uh he'll i'll feel of that and um i love that idea in verse 29 that that she felt that she was made whole now of course the savior as you know says who touched me and the apostles look at him like i didn't know we were supposed to keep track um everybody that's what they say everybody who you you see the multitude thronging the everybody's touching you and you ask to touch who touched me right like the question should be who wasn't trying to touch you and he said no there was one there is one um she comes and says it says she comes out fearing and trembling knowing what was done in her she came fell down before him and told him all the truth that she's like oh no i'm so sorry right i stole your magic um and verse 34 daughter thy faith hath made thee whole it was your reaching right it was your efforts that made the whole go in peace in the whole of thy plague how can you and i reach out to him this week i'm a practical person i like to know how how can we do something right i'm inspired to do it but tell me how i would say change your music this week to a little more savior-centered music and see if that's not reaching out to him change your reading this week to a little more savior-centered turn off the show that you know would be out of the strength of satan pamphlet right [Music] change your change your attitude towards life and blessings through prayer right kneel down and and really call out to him in prayer right that's us being putting ourselves in this woman's place and reaching out to him right and then we're gonna watch for how we feel we're gonna watch how we feel right she felt in her body and we can do that too we can feel the savior's love inside of us right as things change inside of us as we go something has definitely changed inside of my soul right um i've often um i've heard it said by uh president eyring he says when the holy ghost is your companion you can have confidence that the atonement is working in your life that's part of feeling the savior's love is feeling his atonement change you i think the savior still works on an individual basis uh with this woman in mark chapter five he works individually right with her um it's not a big fan fair show where everybody knows what happened she knows what happened he knows what happened and but nobody else really knows what happened i think often times he still he still deals that way we want we want to see him right we want a big dramatic show of the savior's love when really it's still happening on a one by one basis let me give you just one example of of thousands my friend her name is sister elaine dalton i had the opportunity to speak a few times with with sister dalton and we were on a flight once and i was sitting next to her and she told me a story well i think i had asked her about the story she told in in general conference and um she told me you know that same story with a little few more details right because we had a few more hours of of flying well she says when she was a little a little girl in young women's when she was a beehive back when we used to call them beehives she said uh that in young women's they had a bandalo which is a type of like a boy scout would wear with the merit badges she said we had bangalows which um you would when you earned a young woman's value you would get a little patch almost very similar to a scouting type thing you would get a little patch on your on your band low she said when we got those um you would choose your individual kind of symbol and then you would embroider it with the help of your leaders you would embroider it on your band low so there she is 12 years old fasting and praying and thinking what should i put on my band low right because this is going to be part of my young woman's life for the next six years 12 to 18. and she said i decided on a white rose she said i was my favorite flower and it reminded me of the temple right and dressed all in white and so she said i embroidered a white rose on my bengal and that was hers for the next six years as she went through young women's but um she graduated from high school and the band low went in her uh in her hope chest right where it's still there um and she went off and went to school and uh lived the commandments right she said the commandments opened the doors for me and opportunities for me um she said the commandments were the key to you know me having a a successful and happy life and there's a lot to learn from that right that feeling the savior's love he said if you love me keep my commandments and i would say if you want to feel the most you can of the savior's love keep his commandments because when we keep commandments we put ourselves in a place where we can kind of bask in the savior's love so she said and the greatest thing happened to me that could happen to someone she became a grandma i've heard that's a pretty becoming a grandparent i've heard is a pretty good pretty good time um and she said life was life was really good because the commandments right obviously life is still hard but you know things happen that are outside of our control but so much of our life is in our control well she said um she was called into president monson's office how would you like to get that call right the president of the church would like to meet with you and uh she and her husband went and they met with president monson and she said oh hank you're so nice he was as nice as you'd hope he would be he's just sweet and kind and they talked about we talked about growing up in salt lake she said my husband had grown up salt lake president monson grew up in salt lake so they have lots of stories to share and she said at one point um he stops and he turns and he says um sister dolphin the lord has called you to preside over the young women's program of the church right she's kind of like what uh and she said um she said i would love to say i just felt a lot of peace and love at that moment but i was terrified she said i don't like two things flying and speaking and this job is a lot of flying and a lot of speaking and in her head became kind of her own voice you're just a grandma you're nothing special right you're just a grandma you won't you won't be able to do this don't just just just tell him no just go ahead and tell him no and of course she didn't tell him no she told him yes and um she said on our way out of his office i was not feeling good i was feeling overwhelmed and kind of you know probably a lot of anxiety there pretty terrified and she said president monson went over to a bouquet of flowers pulled out a flower and handed it to her and said for the beautiful sister and she said i looked down as we my husband and i left his office i looked down at a white rose now to you and i it would just be a flower if we saw that would just be a flower we wouldn't suspect we were seeing some spectacular showing of the savior's love right but here's what sister dalton said she said i took that precious rose home i put it in a beautiful crystal vase and placed it on the table where i could see it every day or i could see it every day why because to her she felt right she felt the savior's love just like the woman in mark chapter five she felt it uh it wasn't a grand show not not people could see it from the outside but she felt her savior's love a message to her elder redner called these the tender mercies of the lord in fact this is what he said he said i testify that the tender mercies of the lord if you're not that next lard that slide their mark i testify that the tender mercies of the lord are available to all of us the savior's love is available to all of us and that the redeemer of israel is eager to bestow these gifts on us i testify that the tender mercies of the lord the savior's love is real it doesn't occur randomly it's just not merely a coincidence people might look at that flower or that woman being healed and say oh that was just a it's just a lucky coincidence right the elder bed elder bernard and i would witness too that the lord's love is real it doesn't occur randomly or merely by coincidence so i hope and pray that as we think of and ponder the savior's individual love for each of us that we will reach out to him in prayer in what we read in how we spend our time in the music we listen to by getting ourselves to getting ourselves an appointment right and getting ourselves to the temple that as we put ourselves in the position um we can we can get ourselves into the oh the openings of life where we can feel um like sunshine we can get out from under the the muck and the garbage and get ourselves in a place where we can feel the warmth of sunshine it's the same thing we can put ourselves in a place where we can feel his love because it is real and it is there he lives he loves you and he will help you in the name of jesus christ amen amen that was fantastic thank you so much and i love how you talked about how you know as we whether it's through music or or scriptures or whatever the the fact that we're simply reaching out to the savior is what enables us to feel his love i remember talking with a bishop about that and just like well i'm not reading my scriptures enough you know so and he's like wait wait wait just a second mark it's like you the the fact that are you are you trying to are you taking time to pray are you pondering on on spiritual things he's like that's like that's connecting with deity that's connecting with heavenly father that's connecting with the savior and scriptures are part of that but it's not the only way that you can you can feel the spirit or feel god's love and and that was huge for me where it's it's it's like you said it's there's lots of different ways that we can we can feel the savior the the big thing is are we trying to are we reaching yeah are we reaching thank you so much that was fantastic you got it i have a huge um second witness to that music i love that you just said you know listen to some better music this week and that's a really easy and often overlooked way to connect with the savior i think the quickest way to the savior is through a song that is seeking him and there's really good secular music that that still reaches to the savior you know it doesn't have to only be sorry mark the top you don't always have to listen to mark it could be other things that are seeking the savior right that's a great metaphor thanks hank for that of of how will you reach out and all of us can probably ponder and come up with a few ways thank thanks for that good reminder that's a cool way to cool way to apply that story thanks hank yeah hank thank you again so much for being here on the fire side tonight this is me to help fantastic way to start start the evening off so thank you again for being with us we'll go ahead and go to our second speaker of the evening the one the only miss meg johnson [Laughter] love it so good to have you back i always love getting to hang with you meg it's just you're one of my favorite people so i'm always always excited when we get to spend a little time on a fireside so you're always so nice oh well thank you well i'm excited i i have to before you go oh okay okay everyone who's watching today and i we would like you to just sort of turn like this so everyone just you know i think everyone would like to get a little it's still there yeah it's still there [Laughter] for a little while longer at least a little while or longer at least it's uh it might be coming it might be coming to an end soon though we'll see uh we'll see so that's only time will tell only time will tell so i think i think i think meg you still have i think you still have longer hair than me though so do you think it's your hair longer than this maybe you should take it out during my talk and you can come back we could see how who has the longer hair maybe we'll do maybe we'll do a competition at the end yeah well i'm so excited to hear your thoughts man go ahead and take it away my friend thank you so much thanks mark sure love him um sure love what hank said about reaching out to the savior it is an action it is an action that we have to take it's not um heavenly father and jesus christ they've given us our agency our ability to to choose if we want to fill the savior's love if we want to have those things in our lives no one is going to force us to do things like that and so our actions are the ones that are going to help us to fill the savior's love um we make decisions that that we think oh my goodness this has caused me such a terrible trial like hank was talking about and sometimes um life just kicks us in the face like hank was talking about and sometimes um sometimes we get trials for doing the right thing um and those maybe are the hardest ones of all to endure because we're like heavenly father i was just i was just trying to do what you told me to do i was just trying to do the things that i was commanded to do i when i was um younger maybe half my life ago goodness i was like 20 21 i broke off an engagement with somebody and i really loved this person and i really wanted to marry this person and we had a plan to get married in the temple i mean everything was going you know according to plan and um except in my heart in my heart i felt like i needed to break off this engagement and i did not want to i did not want to break this engagement off but after a lot of praying and fasting and praying some more and begging heavenly father to let me marry him um i knew what heavenly father wanted me to do and so i broke off the engagement and it was terrible it was terrible i didn't want to i didn't want to break up i didn't want to i wanted to get married this was like my whole future plans just you know disappeared disappeared with one phone call just everything just disappeared and i wasn't getting married anymore i wasn't a fiance anymore i didn't have a fiance anymore i i was just um and i was so sad about that i was so sad my life it was not going the way that i thought it should go it wasn't going the way that i wanted it to go and um maybe a little bit harder than that even was that nobody understood why i had done that nobody understood why i had broken off the engagement um my my my ex-fiance didn't understand and his family and friends didn't understand and my um my own family and my friends they didn't understand and i i went out to my car one day after feeling like nobody understood and i was just sitting in my car i hadn't started it yet i don't even know if i had a place to go i just was sitting there and i was holding on to the wheels the the the wheel the of the the steering wheel and i was gripping and that's when i could use my hands i wasn't paralyzed yet um but i was holding on to that steering wheel and i was praying and i was saying heavenly father do you see me do you see me and do you love me because it really feels like nobody else does right now and i turned on my car and i had been listening to the music really loud in the car ride before and the music came blasting through the speakers in accompaniment with the holy spirit that seemed to squeeze my heart as the lyrics saying i'm gonna love you forever and ever forever and ever forever and ever i know that the savior loves all of us no matter what we're doing no matter what we're not doing no matter who we are no matter who we're not it doesn't matter heavenly father and jesus christ have a perfect love for us um and it's here on this earth that we are trying to feel that love and to create that spiritual relationship with them as we struggle through mortality and mortality brings a lot of terrible trials with it no matter what caused them no matter who caused them no matter no matter why they're happening they're still happening and they're still going on and um hank's message is one that we should watch and re-watch and maybe go to that story in the bible and just read it and read it and read it over and over and over and apply that theme of reaching out to the savior because it is us and our effort to reach out that we can grab hold of that love and feel it stronger it we don't create that love and we don't make it happen but we are the ones who reach out grab it and pull it towards us that's our that's our opportunity as people on this earth who have been given the gift of agency to choose for ourselves if we want to fill that or if we want to do the opposite which is turn our back on heavenly father and turn away from him and instead of reaching out for him and grabbing everything that we can and pulling it to us we reach out and just push him away and i am a firm believer and i've talked about it before many times that when your life hits a trial you do one of two things you either turn towards the savior and create a relationship with him or you turn your back on him and move away from him there is no middle ground when we when our life hits a trial we do one of those two things and it's us who's doing the actions elder david a baxter um said that often we turn our back on the savior when he when we have a trial in our life no matter who caused it what caused it you know whatever happened a lot of us turn our back on the savior um thinking that you know he could change it he could fix it he could stop it but he doesn't and we know that he can but he won't and so we're mad at him and sometimes having a testimony backfires because we know who to blame and david a baxter said that god is forsaken in the all-too-human yet mistaken fear that he has forsaken us all of us listening today either are currently experiencing a moment where we feel forsaken by heavenly father or we have in the past felt forsaken and forgotten by heavenly father because we have testimonies we know that heavenly father lives we know that jesus christ lives we know that they are aware of us and we don't understand how they could be aware of us and how they could be aware of these trials and not fix them and not change them and not stop these terrible things from happening i don't know why but my husband and i have experienced more trials personally um in the last like this last summer then we have our entire marriage combined it has been just one after the other after the other and they overlap and they don't end some of them and so there's trials that are ongoing you know trials with our car trials with our home trials with our extended family um just different different trials with our health like we have just had one after the other after the other and i was really excited for the summer my daughter got out of school and i had this three-month calendar with a holiday on every day and things were going to do on mondays on tuesdays on wednesdays on thursdays on fridays we didn't even look at that counter we didn't even get to look at it one time because right before school went out that's when um our first trial happened and they just didn't stop and my head it got comical um to the point where like i can't i don't even know why this is happening to us all of these things this summer has been so full of trials and i do not mean to complain or or say that my trials are worse than anyone else's i know that in saying that my last few months have been really heavy with trials i am talking to people who can also say this um and none of these trials are seen like i get it i'm in a wheelchair that's a very visual trial but the other trials i mean aside from my car being towed home every other week um aside from that um there are very internal trials trials that nobody else would know about or see and one of the one of the visual trials happened during a bunch of other trials and that's when both my husband and i got coveted and it was kind of a weird a weird experience where i would be really really sick couldn't get up so sick and he would be just kind of sick but he could at least make breakfast lunch and dinner for our kids and then the next day we would just switch i would be just kind of sick and he would be so sick couldn't get up and we took turns for like two weeks of being so so sick or like okay i'm okay enough to take care of our family and that was a tender mercy and a special blessing for my husband and me um so that our family didn't suffer so that we could still take care of our family while he and i were both so sick and it was during um this terrible sickness that of course our garden and our yard and our trees and our house um [Music] was and our work was completely neglected like we didn't have we didn't we didn't feel well enough to do anything to take care of the basic necessities of our home and family life and our work life like we just didn't we couldn't do it and i woke up i was it was one of the days that i was feeling well enough to take care of the family and i was i was i woke up and i came into my office to do my prayers and scriptures and journal that's my morning routine and i come in and i um i write down my to-do list for the day which is of course you know full very full list that i know i'm not going to get to um and i fold my arms and i i can't kneel down because of course i'm paralyzed um but i take off my shoes because that's how i can show reverence to heavenly father and i'm going to pray and tell him about my day and what i need help with but i can't say any of that and i just cry i just cry and i say heavenly father and i want to ask him for a break i want to ask him to relieve these trials i want to ask him for help um to remove these trials i have a testimony of heavenly father and his omnipotence and i know that he can remove these trials i know that he can i know that he can fix my car i know that he can fix my extended family i know that he can do these things but i don't pray for him to remove these trials instead i say it's okay it's okay that um i'm having these trials but i really feel forgotten right now i really feel forsaken i really feel like for whatever reason um you have turned your back on me and i know in my mind i know in my heart that this isn't true i know that you are aware of me right now and i know that you know about all of these terrible trials that we're experiencing so will you please send me a message will you please send me someone to help me i know that they maybe can't come in because we'll get them sick you know but will you please just send me someone to help me someone to help my family like just anything just as just something small just a message from you because i know that president kimball um spoke the truth and it's been quoted many times since then that god does notice us and he watches over us but it's usually through another person that he meets our needs and i speak extensively on how we need to be the people who are listening to the holy spirit who the angels speak by the power of the holy spirit and i know that the angels love us and the angels go and they speak by the power of the spirit to us and tell us who to help and how and i speak extensively on how we can be that person for other people to meet their needs to let them know that they're not forgotten to let them know that heavenly father is aware of them and that we love them um and in doing that we are blessed and i i speak extensively on that and i know that that's true but this day and my weakness in my trials in my hardships in my pain i prayed and i said heavenly father i know that you can do this will you please send me someone to help us and um like i said i didn't feel the best um so i'd been crying but i didn't feel well enough to actually you know clean myself up too well and so i i probably had like mascara you know like like splotchy you know away from my eyes as i wiped my face and stuff like that because later that day i was watching my kids you know play out in the yard as i was as i was just sitting there in my wheelchair on my back porch you know not feeling the best but at least not as sick as my husband who can't get you know up that day and um my neighbor ryan comes over you know into our yard and you know he's a distance away but he still comes over and even from a distance away he looks at me and he's like meg you look terrible and i was like i'm you know i'm not feeling the best you know my way and i have been a little bit sick and he's like oh i don't want to offend you but i'm going to mow your lawn i won't take no for an answer and he did he just got on his lawnmower and we don't have a small lawn we have we have like an acre we live on an acre and part of that is garden but not a lot of that you know like it is a lot of lawn and i sat in my wheelchair um inside my kitchen but looking out in the backyard as i watched my neighbor mow the lawn and i just sat in the in the kitchen and cried i just cried the rest of my mascara i just cried it all off but i wasn't sad i was so grateful i was so full of love and gratitude for heavenly father that he would send someone for me that he would hear my prayer and he would send a righteous man over to see my need and help in the way that he could um god does notice as president kimball said and he watches over us but it's usually through another person that he meets our needs um i i know that we can feel the love of the savior as we act on the promptings of the spirit and help in the ways that we can and meet the needs of other peoples whenever we can and always you know all day every day um i know that we can feel the love of the savior as we keep our baptismal covenants and always remember the savior and do our part to do as hank said which is reach out to the savior yesterday i picked i had i took my daughter my little four-year-old to ballet and we were traveling back to our car and i reached down and i picked up a piece of garbage off the off the concrete because that's something i personally like to do because i believe that everything in this world belongs to the savior and we are simply stewards over it and as i reach down and pick up garbage as i you know travel you know go around my day um i think i'm picking up this garbage for the savior jesus christ so he doesn't have to pick it up and so that his sidewalk is clean and i did it for and i told my four-year-old i said we pick up garbage sometimes because this is the savior's sidewalk and we want to remember him always so we want to clean up where we go so that he can have a clean whatever it is and um i know that as we do and as we remember the savior that we will feel his love for us and him being with us but it's us reaching out i mean you can't really say too much more than what hank said we have to be the ones to reach out and um in my sickness and my trials and my sadness the other day when i prayed for for heavenly father to just send me someone with a message that he hadn't forgotten us um i was blessed with that too and i i did my part when all i could do which was reach out in prayer and heavenly father answered me and i'm not saying that's always going to be the case sometimes heavenly father requires more of us as we reach out to him but we can't ever let him down and we can't ever let him pass by without doing like that woman did and reach out with everything we have to grab hold of that love that he has for us and bring it closer to uh to us in our hearts and i hope that you will do that and i say this in the name of jesus christ amen awesome meg thank you so much i loved how you talked about how that that we can feel the savior's love we can feel heavenly father the influence of the spirit as we act on the act on the prominence that we received that i know that at least for me i often forget that faith is not passive it's a very active thing and if and if and i would say the same thing for love you know the i feel more love the more service i give or the more things i do you know and it's not like you have to do things to to feel love or receive love or anything like that but but uh but i love how you talked about if that's something that we're seeking if we're looking to feel more of the spirit in our lives then there's a lot of different things that we can do you know like service or like you know like following promptings that we have that will help us invite that that love that spirit into our love into our lives thank you so much meg that was wonderful yeah we will all have those liberty jail moments oh god where are you right and that's not there's nothing wrong with that i like how vulnerable you are there meg by saying yeah i've had a i had a oh god where are you moment uh and god responds yeah god responds i i i can always count on meg to bring it to service which is so i love that you quoted president kimball about god does love us and he watches over us but it is usually through and when i see a quotation like that i always like to notice what it doesn't say let's say it's usually through thunder and lightning no it's usually through a magnificent a parent of an angel no it's usually through a notable miracle no it's usually through another person and we can help people feel the savior's love by by reaching out to another person i was at timeout for women one year and this woman came up to me showed me her phone she said every morning i get this on my phone who needs me today it's her own reminder it's not does someone need me it's no somebody does who is it so thanks meg for that reminder i love it thank you well thank you thank you again so much for being with us tonight that was fantastic message that definitely brought the spirit so thank you so much again for being with us we'll go ahead and move to our final speaker of the evening mr man the man from mayberry himself i know i say it every time john but it's just it's just so perfect for you you're just like it's just wonderful maybe i wish there was a little bit more mayberry in the world you know that's what i think too i wish uh we could all go there such a nice wonderful place so sometimes we uh escape into mayberry and go watch andy and barney and opie and aunt b and and then we feel a little bit better about the world totally totally very awaiting us someday i love it i love it well i'm so excited to hear your thoughts on how we can feel the savior's love in our lives john so go ahead and take it away my friend oh thank you mark i think uh we've already had a great evening you don't need me but um as i thought about this topic i thought if anyone is wondering how do i feel the savior's love it's probably because they're not feeling it to the extent they would like to or um are wondering how they can feel it more so i thought who would try to prevent us from feeling the savior's love i'd like you to see the bible dictionary definition for the devil obviously this satan would like to prevent us can you make that a little bigger mark um there then whenever i'm a little bit smaller i think it's much more pleasant experience for our viewers the english word devil is in the king james version is used to represent several different words in greek look at these words slanderer a demon and adversary and hebrew spoiler a slanderer a spoiler an adversary against you the devil is the enemy of righteousness and of those who do the will of god and it further down in this definition it quotes revelation 12 9 which gives another kind of definition in the book of revelation can you put that one up um the verse is beautiful at the beginning i heard a loud voice saying in heaven now has come salvation and strength and the kingdom of our god and the power of his christ and mark who is listening has sung the messiah before and you can almost hear in the hallelujah course the kingdom of our god and his christ but look at this the accuser of our brethren is cast down which accused them before our god day and night another one of satan's names is the accuser sometimes we help him do his work by accusing others confessing each other's sins uh or accusing uh beating ourselves up show the next one mark and i love putting these next to each other jesus my favorite nickname for jesus which i've talked about before i love to but i'm not i've already done it before but my favorite nickname for the savior is advocate and i may change my mind tomorrow but i love the idea of our advocate who is pleading our cause go see section 45 of the doctrine and covenants um sees section 110 where he appears in the kirtland temple and tells them i am your advocate so satan's names are adversary slanderer spoiler accuser and but jesus is our advocate um in fact let's show those those verses there uh in first john my little children these things right i unto you john says that ye sin not and if any man sin if any woman sin if any teenager sin if any young adult sin we have an advocate look at those words right there the hope that comes there i hope you feel the love of the savior just looking at that we have an advocate with the father jesus christ the righteous i've done this before but if you haven't heard my other the other time i talked about advocate just google jesus advocate harry anderson the artist who painted this painting and then go read along with that section 45 i think it's a verse 3 of the doctrine and covenants how our advocate will be there pleading our cause before the father and when you hear advocate you think of he's advocating for someone so that's two people and he's advocating us to someone to the father and that's what jesus does he is a uniter he prays that we may be one how does he do that the atonement the atonement that unites us all together the greatest act of of love ever and if we are helping satan do his work by accusing ourselves and um beating ourselves up i i want to show you something else it's really not about the distance sometimes we might feel far from the savior it's about the direction uh so you're in church but are you coming or going that's the question or you're in prison and i've talked on other firesides about i know hank and meg have done this too speaking at the prison and having wonderful spiritual experiences there about people who are trying to come to christ so it doesn't matter really the distance it matters the direction kind of the which way are you facing um elder jeffrey r holland said it this way he said god doesn't care nearly as much about where you are have where you have been as he does about where you are and with his help where you are willing to go and that speaks about you know where our heart is where you are and where are you willing to go and that kind of takes us back to hank's application there about are you willing to reach out and what kind of things can you do to to reach out a few years ago the theme for the youth was moroni 10 32 which and these are moroni's very last words in fact i think this is like four verses away from the very end of the book of mormon and i i love to tell my students the title page is tell them what you're going to tell them and the last page is tell them what you've told them so sometime if you're bored compare the last page with the title page of the book of mormon and you will see christ and you will see covenants and you will see you can be spotless title page last page and every page in between so look at these words come unto christ and be perfected in him now if you can just focus on those four minutes um one of my favorite professors joseph fielding mcconkey changed my life once when he said we read scriptures too fast so slow down come unto christ and be perfected in him i want you to notice the sequence it's be perfected in him it's not as the next slide says be perfect before you come to him and some of us might be tempted to think that way oh i can't i can't go back to the church i can't go back uh to the temple you know it's something you work on with your bishop of course but because i'm not good enough and you think you have to get perfect yourself before you can come but look at the sequence here be perfected in him um so sometimes we get sequences mixed up there was and this happens this has happened many times nfl college football so it's the ravens it's like third and 10 or something and they're backed up they're on their own 20 and they throw a pass the quarterback kind of telegraphs the route and the linebacker sees it jumps the route and intercepts the ball and runs to the end zone and uh crosses the end zone but look what happened to the ball he was so excited that he didn't hang on to the ball all the way into the end zone he dropped the ball and started to celebrate and this happens i don't mean to throw anybody under the bus so hopefully he can't i don't even know who that player is but dropped the ball and went into the end zone um and the referees didn't do anything they didn't signal touchdown they just kind of watched until the ball that he had dropped you can see he dropped it before the end zone kind of rolled out and then the referees called touchback gave it back to the ravens first down and you can imagine the coach saying to his linebacker you got the sequence mixed up here you intercepted the ball that's good then you run to the end zone then you celebrate you don't intercept celebrate and then drop the ball right and that's just kind of a fun way to explain sequences can be very important um here's a few more this one you've probably heard in business seminars before ready fire aim like we go running off in all directions but we don't have our aim yet and this is why having a patriarchal blessing part of the children and youth program is is personal development in setting some goals based on on your prayers on revelation on your patriarchal blessing what should my goals be and then then we have our aim and then we fire but ready fire aim try that ready fire aim and it can really annoy the neighbors if you're not careful with your with your bow and arrow let's look at some more sequences that are really important that you get right for example i just did ready fire aim here's another one open shake well no it's shake well then open with your orange juice or with your v8 juice if you open and then shake that can can cause a great physical discomfort to those around you uh another one try this with the shampoo rinse repeat lather uh if you do that just once and go to church that way people will will notice i think you got your steps out of order there uh next uh cut the wood then measure it no the carpenter's rule very wise measure twice cut once figure out what you're going to do and then you get the saw out you don't get well then see the doctor i can't go see the doctor i'm too sick no that's not the sequence uh what's another one um you don't straighten your teeth with a pair of pliers and then see the orthodontist no you see the orthodontist or lastly i thought this one was funny uh the housekeeper is coming oh i'm too sick um to clean the house so i hired a housekeeper but i don't want to see the house like this so clean the house then wait for that no you have the housekeeper so i'm just trying to think of some examples of where sequence is important and one of those is come unto christ now that invitation and elder david a bednar said the central and recurring theme of the book of mormon is the invitation to come unto christ and be perfected in him and there's that sequence um i don't know if our listeners will remember but i want to say maybe late 80s or 90s sister chieko okazaki was in the general relief society presidency and she wrote a bunch of books and she just had a wonderful way about her it was a powerful speaker and this paragraph has blessed a lot of people jesus is not waiting for us to be perfect that would be a long wait don't you think perfect people don't need a savior he came to save us in our imperfections he is the lord of the living and the living make mistakes he's not embarrassed by us angry at us or shocked he wants us in our brokenness in our unhappiness in our guilt and our grief he invites us to come to him in fact it's so interesting to look at the third nephi where the the more righteous were saved and many died in the destructions in like third nephi nine and he doesn't get there to the righteous among the nephites and the lamanites and and say i'm here and you're still standing because you're perfect in fact in third nephi 9 i think it's about verse 13 he says will you not now um repent and come unto me and be converted that i may heal you so they weren't perfect either and i don't know exactly where the line was it sounds like it's a pretty low bar if you read it you're the ones who didn't stone the prophets who didn't kill them but he comes to even them and says you're still here because you are the more righteous but will you please repent and be healed and be converted so no they they weren't perfect when he came to them and they must have felt the savior's love as he invited them to come up uh one by one and feel the wounds in his hands and in his feet and to reach out uh i've always loved this story of elder neil l anderson that he told in a talk that he called repent that i may heal you that's from third nephi 9 13. elder anderson said years ago i was asked to meet with a man who long before our visit had had a period of righteous living as a result of bad choices he lost his membership in the church he had long since returned to the church and was faithfully keeping the commandments but his previous actions haunted him okay who is it that would want you to keep reliving those previous actions that's the slanderer that's the accuser that's the spoiler that's not the advocate uh next paragraph meeting with him i felt his shame and his deep remorse at having set his covenants aside following our interview i placed my hands upon his head to give him a priesthood blessing before speaking a word i felt an overpowering sense of the savior's love and forgiveness for him following the blessing we embraced and the man wept openly next paragraph i am amazed at the savior's encircling arms of mercy and love for the repentant no matter how selfish the forsaken sin i testify that the savior is able and eager to forgive our sins i like that elder anderson used the word able there i kind of noticed i've kind of noticed in marking my scriptures that we are often called willing or asked to be willing but only god is called abel notice in the sacrament prayer it says that we're willing to take that that we covenant that we are willing to take upon us the name of of christ the name of thy son the priest but he is able he says i am able to do my work in second nephi what's his work to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man sometimes parents beat themselves up and say my my kids are having problems well it doesn't say this is your work and your glory to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of your children the lord says that is my work and my glory and second ephi 20 i think and i am able to do my work uh going back the savior is able and eager to forgive our sins except for the sins of those few who choose perdition after having known a fullness there is no sin that cannot be forgiven last paragraph what a marvelous privilege for each of us to turn away from our sins and come unto christ divine forgiveness is one of the free sweetest fruits of the gospel removing guilt and pain from our hearts and replacing them with joy and peace of conscience jesus declares will ye not now return unto me and repent of your sins and be converted that i may heal you he wants to heal us and that is one way we we feel his love now let me do a couple of more stories and i'll be done you all know the story of the zoromites in in alma 32 33 uh they went up on top of the rameemptom and they said a prayer that left alma and his brethren astonished beyond all measure it's the highest level of astonishment in the book of mormon i've actually charted all the different astonishment levels in the book of mormon there's greatly astonished exceedingly astonished but this one is astonished beyond all measure it's off the charts they can't measure it and it was when they heard the prayer on the rameumtum and you recall the prayer of the zoramites it kind of describes their theology thou has elected us to be saved and thrust everyone else down to hell for which holiness o god we thank thee and alma and his brother just can't believe it they also say in the prayer that has made it no not to us that there will be no christ and when you read this you'll see alma say a prayer and at the beginning of this prayer in alma 31 he says um how can we behold such gross wickedness at the end of this prayer he says their souls are precious and many of them are our brethren well when he opens the scriptures to them he reads from some brass plates prophets zenith and z zenus and zenoc zenoch if i'm saying that right and he quotes these scriptures to show that god will have a son i had an epiphany with this verse you see right now because i had always thought of it in the context of alma showing them that god will have a son thou art he said thou art angry o lord with this people because they will not understand thy mercies which thou stoled upon them because of thy son and then he says look god will have a son the epiphany i had was look at this verse in another context look at this verse as illustrating the mercy of christ how do you make the lord angry most of us would answer oh what's that verse about you don't acknowledge his hands and all things but look at this one thou art angry o lord with this people because they will not understand thy mercies the phrase there that's so amazing is will not there's a difference between will not and cannot will not is willfully refusing to understand uh how merciful the savior is i love that verse and i have to look at it as illustrating to the zoramites god will have a son but i love to see it as the lord is telling us please understand my mercies don't re it's the adversary the accuser the slanderer who doesn't want you to understand his mercies and when i thought about hank reaching out i thought about how we literally reach out to partake of the sacrament and to partake let's show that picture i found this one on churchofjesuschrist.org and i i loved it because it said some aaronic some brethren who hold the aaronic priesthood in the philippines where i serve my mission here passing the sacrament and i think of that beautiful visual aid of that sacrament table the savior instituted this sacrament at the last supper it was a table symbolically a communion we're going to eat this supper together maybe it wasn't a table in the last supper but you know what i mean but it's also like an altar where we remember the savior's body and blood and i hope that if you're struggling to feel the savior's lover wanting to that the next time you partake of the sacrament that you will focus on that table that is a table of communion and an altar of sacrifice and think of the love that comes from that that the savior doesn't just say let's create a sacrament table put it on wheels and bring it out every christmas and easter but every single week it is there and the lord invites us back every single week what a merciful loving thing to do to say renew your covenants again right here and as we reach out to take that elder bruce hafen said we assimilate the atonement into ourselves symbolically when we partake of the body and the blood those the emblems of the body and the blood of christ beautiful metaphor for the love that the savior has for us and that is one of the places where i hope we can feel how the savior loves us as we take time sing the song as meg said oh we can't let the sacrament get too routine to us and look at that table and accept that invitation of the savior to come unto christ be perfected in him hopefully that's a place we can feel his love in a time in the world when we really need it we really need to focus on him and his love as we navigate this world with all of the the problems that that we have but we can be still and know that he is god and all flesh is in his hands and we can feel his love and ultimately he will wipe all the tears from our eyes as it also says in the book of revelation and i say these things my brothers and sisters in the name of jesus christ amen amen john that was wonderful and i loved how you talked about how so much of of our ability to feel the savior's love or to feel heaven's love is dependent on which way we are choosing to face you know if we're choosing to face the savior doesn't matter where we are or where we're starting from today it's that's that's more important than you know how fast we're moving towards towards anything you know it's what direction are we facing are we facing the savior are we trying to to feel his love are we trying to to hear him or are we or are we going a different path i love the i love so many of the quotes and the scriptures that you shared today so thank you so much i was really moved by a lot of things that you said of course but um what in the very beginning you talked about the different names for the savior and the different names for um for the adversary and one of those names was spoiler and in my own in my own mind i can just imagine like how that's so applicable you know the spoiler of good feelings and the spoiler of of feeling the savior's love in our lives um and i do agree with you that um a focus on the sacrament not taking it too lightly and reading it slow though that prayer will help us to always remember the savior and when we are doing that we're reaching to him and we're able to fill his love and lastly only you would document and chart the levels of astonishment i always tell my students this is today's most worthless chart but i i did there's there's nine cases of being astonished there's nine of being being astonished exceedingly or exceedingly astonished but i tell my class my friends there is only one astonished beyond all measure i can't measure it it's off the charts i love it yeah john um uh you know when i've heard people have negative experiences with the doctrines of the church it's usually a misunderstanding about how about i'm i'm not good enough i just couldn't you know i i i couldn't keep all the rules i couldn't you know and it's going well it's it's more about this there's not a mention of the savior's love and you know um it was mostly i just got burned out right i couldn't do it i couldn't couldn't do it anymore and then the judgment from others right that i felt uh and all of that is wiped away with the savior's love right that you don't feel judged you just need to feel loved and you don't have to be perfect to come to him he's not expecting that um yeah i love that chieko okazaki statement of it's a come as you are invitation wherever you are what it would just just come if you're committed to repenting every day you're good we'll figure out the rest later but just come now yeah and and and be perfected in him i think thankfully for all of us you know that's the invitation right amen amen i love that john thank you so much and thank you megan hank as well for the time that you've spent with us tonight as well as for the testimonies and the powerful witnesses of the love that the savior has for each of us that you've shared tonight i hope that all of you who are watching at home have felt the spirit and put in the comments below the video where you're watching whether it's on youtube or facebook what your favorite part of tonight's fireside has been whether you know your favorite part from hank's talk or for meg's talk or john's talk let us know in the comments we love hearing your thoughts and your feedback as well so should shoot that in there and again thank you so much for spending your evening with us we'll close tonight's fireside with the closing prayer by hank and then like we have in previous weeks we'll hang out for a few extra minutes and and reconnect with everybody and otherwise we'll see you next time for another our turtle house digital fireside hank take it away you got it our father and father in heaven we are grateful uh for this opportunity grateful for technology grateful for those who uh participated tonight and uh listened and we pray for uh increase of the spirit in all of our hearts and minds that we can be continually cleansed by thy sons glorious atonement we love him and pray that uh for peace across the world and we pray for uh those who are suffering uh that we might know how to bless them and that uh that thou will be mindful of them and and sent miracles and angels to them we love the father and offer this prayer in the name of thy son jesus christ amen [Music] so uh meg i think uh there's something important that we need to talk about that you've got coming up here in the next couple weeks the princess pageant you want to talk a little bit more about that for everybody who's watching yeah so we we run the the princess pageant um it's a pageant for little girls in wheelchairs and they come and there's it's two events they have a little tea party and you know they drink little pink lemonade and they have a little lunch and the moms and they mingle and have a lunch and we have wonderful sponsors who give you know gifts to the moms and the girls and we have all of these teenagers who dress up like princesses and so you know all of the disney princesses plus a whole lot of others and some we made up because disney really needs to make some more princesses if anyone's watching disney we only have like 13 and we have like 30 girls so we have a lot of a lot of made up princesses um and then the princesses go to like five rehearsals and so they know all about what to do and so they just have fun at the tea party with the girls and then the next day they have the pageant where they the participants they do a two-minute presentation which is super cute like a lot of them do a video with a slideshow but then this year some some are going to do a show and tell with their favorite toys and the princesses will help them you know and one year we had a girl play soccer another year we had a girl get out of her wheelchair and show us how even with her body like it is that needs a wheelchair to go around school and all of her day and you know she can't walk she can still ride a wheel uh ride a skateboard and do tricks like just on her knees she was super cool so cool and then they do a dance they have a dance with the princesses that the princesses already know the dance and so the girls just dance along all the princesses push them around and then everyone gets crowned all the little girls they get a crown and a sash and flowers and gifts and so if anybody knows a little bit about princesspagent.org so that would be awesome thanks i love that look at that there's someone there's somebody reaching out and uh yeah blessing someone else i i hank i've never had the thought hey i should start a prince party i just i've never done that i'm so glad there are meg johnson's in this world speaking of prince parties we are we are we we got asked recently if we would allow little boys to join so yes the answer is yes and we have uh teenage boys this year coming dressed like just like princess so john if you would like to um you're doing it and just like a i would send my boys but i think the girls would say that prince's nose is not clean right i think that prince smells oh i love it wow that's really cool meg that is great man where do you do that um well we hold the tea party we used to hold it at the zion big building they've been a great sponsor and donor for us for a lot of years but we're actually too big we have too many girls coming so we we had to find a bigger space so we just do it at a really big gym um the tea party we we have great decorators and great photographers and great caterers we have i just work with the a team and then the pageant itself is at west high school what a blessing for them that's so cool that'll be so cool that's the first that's the second weekend in october right second weekend in october yeah yeah and it's really nice that when i got paralyzed they have every sport imaginable for people with disabilities i mean you can go to the national ability center you can go rock climbing skiing water skiing um you could play soccer you can play football you can play anything any sport yeah rugby yeah that's a thing and so but i mean i wasn't sporty before i was paralyzed so it's not like oh i can't walk i love sports like that doesn't happen and so i just wanted like i was a dancer and that's just all i wanted to do and as i looked around i noticed that there's lots of girls in wheelchairs who have dancer hearts but just not dance her bodies and so i found all of the little girls in wheelchairs who just want to dress up and dance and we just get to hang out i love that that's so cool great that's so good and uh obviously all of your your summer travel john and hank is is tied up now that you know we're back into the flow of school and everything but you've got uh you've got some well you know world world events permitting and everything you've got some uh israel events at the end of the year or something don't you or yeah if they go we'll find out i think my mission president used to say make your plans in pencil and that has been so true this year and uh i
