beautiful bold and sexy social media star candil Baloch challenged conventions and shocked a nation [Music] strict Muslim country of Pakistan a woman's actions can have fatal consequences over one thousand women are killed every year for bringing dishonor on their families this is the story of how one girl's murder shed light on an issue plaguing an entire nation [Music] [Music] thank you Pakistan is one of the world's leading Muslim nations it aspires to be a modern democracy but in many ways it remains a deeply conservative Society when these Worlds Collide it's women who pay the price interpretations of religious rules combined with harsh tribal customs to demand that women know their place [Music] Asma jahangir is one of the country's top human rights lawyers honor killings have been in this country for a long time takes place in all parts of the country it's not just in remote areas it is basically it started with a feudal background and the feudal mindset [Music] so-called honor killings when a woman is believed to bring so much shame and dishonor on her family she is murdered honor killings do take place all the time and not only in this country if you look at Jordan you look at Egypt you look at Turkey in the east of turkey this has been prevalent for a long time much of Pakistan women can be all but invisible young woman was determined to stand out foreign [Music] [Music] in 2015 model and singer qandeel Baloch became Pakistan's biggest social media star [Music] journalist Amber shamsi remembers when kandil first burst onto the scene this is a video of her singing and she's wearing a very sort of goddess like greasyon dress and you know you can see her legs she's singing a song of another really popular pop singer I think what a deal was that you know she kept you interested you never got bored Pakistan a performance on Pakistan Idol first threw candile into the spotlight [Applause] so the Pakistan Idol audition was 2013 and that was also um it went viral as well and and the reason was you know she was wearing these clothes and she was she had a very big personality [Music] foreign [Music] and she didn't take the criticism from one of the judges very well and she threw a bit of a tantrum and her voice wasn't very good she was incredibly memorable she had Charisma she had something [Music] but qandeel didn't dwell on the judge's rejection Jihad an agent Mac Han who guided her on her quest for stardom s oh it's awfully [Music] when she failed to break through on mainstream media qandeel turned to the internet for self-promotion [Music] how I'm looking just marvelous extraordinary Banks together [Music] throwaway phrase grab the country's attention and turned kandil into an online sensation beautiful in the beginning it was the absurdity of it we couldn't see any discernible Talent except for the fact that she was good looking and she would she was okay with being out there and sexy and funny foreign she did represent this change in Pakistan and the change is obviously because of smartphones and the internet when you go outside of urban areas you see less women outside in public spaces but they do have their mobile phones it means they are on social media this is a change that's been happening in Pakistan over the last three years and qandeel kind of represented the good and the bad of it but qandeel was also beginning to cross the boundary of what is deemed acceptable behavior for a woman in Pakistan is me Pakistan meh Ure is if I did have objections to the fact that she used her body that's not what women should be about but again as a feminist I admired the audacity for her you know she made her choices she was very clear about them she wasn't a hypocrite she certainly was not a hypocrite actually basically artists um [Music] Behavior infuriates some of Pakistan's religious conservatives who believe women should always be modest and never show their bodies in such a provocative way and it had become a topic of debate on a national news channel is from National TV to Twitter qandeel also began receiving a torrent of abuse online yucky the more qandeel defends herself the more she seems to divide the nation is as the controversies increase kandil is invited onto a talk show with religious cleric Mufti kavi was well known for his clashes with young modern women one of the favorite themes in local media channels to get ratings is the model versus the mullah and it's been done a lot of times a lot of times before so with the striptease obviously Pakistani media channels now wanted her to confront mullers and they one of their favorite pullers to invite was mufts the network census Candice pictures they are deemed to be too inappropriate and the presenter challenges her about them despite his disapproval the Muller seems oddly Keen to get to know can deal better inshallah met this is when things I think personally um that's when things took a darker turn it wasn't so funny anymore this meeting would trigger a chain of events that would end in qundil's death [Music] social media star qandeel Baloch divided a nation her videos provoking excitement and animosity in equal measure and Candia was all too aware of the expectation traditional Pakistan puts on its women she grew up in the Tiny Village one of the most conservative and poorest areas in central Pakistan people here scratch a living from subsistence farming and qandeel's elderly parents Anwar Bibi and azim Khan are no different foreign such such okay foreign destined for the conventional life of a young girl in rural Pakistan is foreign 's mother tried to make her return to her abusive husband [Music] breaking with tradition qandeel decided to make an escape um [Music] unwilling to submit to cultural Traditions can deal strong personality would shape her future foreign Ty and a way to make enough money to support her family foreign what is this actually did uh come in a few dramas she had some modeling gigs a bit of singing here and there but I think she wasn't getting the kind of Fame she wanted as quickly as she wanted in the way she wanted it to be Amber shamsi was one of the few journalists to interview qandeel before she died in this interview qandeel talks about why she turned to social media parties are the problem is also directly addressed the risk she was taking images [Music] if gun deal was already receiving negative comments from the Pakistani press meeting a religious cleric in private would stoke the flames soon after their television interview together kandil and Mufti kavi arranged to meet in a hotel room in Karachi [Music] kandil films herself teasing the Mufti it's too good oh my God I can't believe life these images of kandil and the cleric were soon broadcast on every News Channel when I saw those images you know he's sitting there smiling I just I said well done good deal you know you've shown his true face [Music] kandil then goes on National Television to claim that the Mufti had gone further than offering spiritual advice the embarrassed cleric insists he has done nothing wrong foreign [Music] 's passport revealing her real name fazia azim naming her meant shaming her making her and her family targets women are progressing in this country women have aspirations and women have it once they are far more liberal than Society wants them to be and so they are under Threat all the time and it is mostly young men it says the brothers obviously are chastised by their peers that what is your sister doing qandil's younger brother Waseem begins to receive insults from the local community about his scandalous sister foreign 's older brother Aslam warned the family that things were getting out of handsome Buddies foreign grows while the threats of violence against qandeel increase foreign [Music] [Music] in genuine fear for her life qandeel runs to the one place she thinks she will be safe back home to her mother is [Music] [Music] splashed on the front pages of newspapers and forced to defend her behavior on national TV qandeel Baloch sought the Safety and Security of her family home [Music] little did she know this is where she was at most risk on the night of the 15th of July 2016 qandeel Waseem and their parents sit down for an evening meal now alone Waseem pours four glasses of milk for himself his parents and qandeel he then puts a sedative into three of the glasses foreign at 11 30 PM Waseem enters kandil's bedroom [Music] the next morning kandil's mother wakes up feeling groggy foreign foreign [Music] foreign foreign [Music] foreign [Music] 's home Village is in an area notorious for violence against young women who are said to have brought dishonor on their community in every house there is violence against women whether it's a person's wife or a daughter and that honor killings do take place all the time [Applause] [Music] from the same region of South Punjab as qandeel in 2002 murtara was gang raped by 14 men on the order of a local Village Council to settle an honor dispute [Music] um foreign rather than their attackers are often accused of dishonoring their family many commit suicide but mortara fought back you know foreign foreign thank you foreign has also built a refuge for victims of rape and abuse okay anyways foreign as these women stories Show often these cases are ignored but the high-profile nature of kandil's murder meant the police were forced to investigate during his confession kandil's brother Wasim seemed to suggest that the selfies with the cleric Mufti cavi motivated him to kill foreign [Music] foreign [Music] at his home to ask him about his meeting with kandil and why he thinks she was killed [Music] is embarrassed and angered by candil's teasing video foreign did the online humiliation and his subsequent removal from his post on the religious Council upset him and his followers the police say Waseem was helped by three other men the night he killed kandil and her family believed one of the three a man called Abdul basid has a connection to the Mufti but the cleric is adamant he does not know Abdul basid and had nothing to do with gun Deal's death is the police say Mufti kavi is not a suspect in the murder but he remains a person of interest [Music] death her parents show us where she was murdered foreign cases of honor killings in Pakistan the murderer often walks free due to the tradition which allows the family to forgive the Killer in other words kandil's father has the power to Grant his son freedom [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] such was the media attention her funeral was broadcast live on National Television [Music] tradition dictates that only men can publicly display their grief the gender equality that she fought for in her life was still not afforded to her in death foreign often the parents of Honor victims forgive the killer in return for a compensation payment but gandil's father is adamant that he wants Justice for kandil even though it'll mean the loss of another child actually is foreign [Music] honor killings have continued since kandil's death but her parents insistence that her killer be held to account May yet make a difference [Music] today the police are submitting the evidence for kandil's case in front of a judge foreign 's trial s hello foreign foreign Pakistan took steps to repeal the law that allowed perpetrators to be pardoned the change in the legislation means that even if kandil's father changes his mind and decides to forgive Waseem he will still face a mandatory sentence thinks this marks a change in the government's attitude the only significance is that this government has also now put potting all movements that condemn honor killing and it's a message to the Judiciary that the government does not want them to look at honor killings kindly because the judges are also Prejudiced and they used to feel that and some of them still feel that if a woman is killed because she really did provoke then she deserved it the recent amendment by this government which is considered to be more or less a right-wing government just sends a message to the Judiciary to say well this is a crime and you better treat it seriously to highlight the failure of the legal system to protect women is holding a press conference he's brought with her two young girls who have been raped by rich landowners okay foreign [Music] the other young girl has been left so traumatized that she is unable to speak and collapses as she tries to leave the stage [Music] foreign [Music] reports that over a thousand women were murdered in honor killings across the country last year have to change social ideas you have to be able to challenge those social ideas you have to be able to convince people that women are not in the ownership of a tribe or males that they are independent human beings on their own and to convince the courts that they're equal citizens on their own right one striking features in kandil's case curious that the parents stood with her and the parents took a very firm stand against their own son that does not happen in most of the cases large number of them [Music] kandil's life was brutally cut short and we have yet to learn what the outcome of her trial will be what is clear is that she was a polarizing force in Pakistan just before she died she was also about to be given a big opportunity that may have turned her fortunes around makhan remember speaking to her the night before she died had been invited to appear as a host on a major TV Awards show in Karachi and she wanted makhan to go with her foreign foreign [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] there is now hope that her case has sparked a change in Pakistan she was so full of life I just felt she represented this change in Pakistan where anybody can just use whatever medium they have and then be what they want to be [Applause] it brought out the whole discussion whether a woman who is provocative deserve to be killed or not deserved to be killed well you may not agree with her but you certainly cannot kill her and people began to recognize the fact that you can't go to these extremes at all [Music] her mother makes the short journey to her grave every week it remains unmarked a modest memorial for a woman who lived her life in the public eye [Music] however the world chooses to remember kandil Baloch social media star singer depraved or defiant she has put the spotlight on the abuse women experience in traditional Pakistan and for them her bold attitude will live on as a symbol of Hope [Music] [Music] [Music]
