so there's no doubt that using Google Maps in your content is really popular right now because it allows you to situate a viewer really quickly and get them to buy into your adventure even if it's just seeing where in the world you are or in the case of those doing road trips they get to see the route that you've traveled and come along with you in a three to five second snapshot so this video is for those that want to learn how to make these map overlays like the ones I've used in some of my latest motorbike travel videos I've got Links at the end of this video or in the description below [Applause] so this is an example of the easiest way to do a map animation using two basic Google Maps screenshots it's really quite easy I'll go into more detail after the next example but this is about a five minute effort once you're used to it [Applause] this example is a little more complex and it involves using Google my maps to make the route and then you export it as a KML file import it into Google Earth Studio now if you plan to use Google Earth Studio you do have to apply to be able to use it I think in my case though it took less than a day to be approved so just take that into account this process does take longer as well because you have to get used to keyframing and moving the map around and actually creating part of the video inside Google Earth Studio but if you do this a couple of times you can still put this together in around 15 minutes [Applause] okay this is a simple Google Maps process first what you want to do is create a travel route inside of Google Maps once you've done that it's pretty basic take a screenshot but what you need to do is make sure that you line up the map so that you can take another screenshot the exact same size or as close as you can get just so that when you overlay them on each other you can line them up and I'll explain more later next step is going to be to remove that route but you want to keep the map aligned almost exactly the same and at the same zoom level and take another screenshot once you've done that load both of those screenshots into whatever video editing software you're using and put both pictures into your timeline make sure the top layer is the picture with your route on it next make sure the opacity of your top layer is set to 60 so that you can see both routes if you can't properly see them both just mess with that opacity so that you can actually see both and for me I used the roads to be able to line those up perfectly this can take a little bit of time once you have these sorted you need to make a mask for the route overlay it doesn't have to be perfect because you can Tinker with opacity and also feather and fall off to get it nice and perfect and make sure that it looks visually like it's not a cutout what you want to do is make sure it Blends in with the bottom layer a pro tip you can increase the size percentage on the maps if you need and what you can do with that then is add some movement to start at a start point and then finish at an end point and that gives the viewer a better view of the route and a sense of traveling the route themselves now render the video and play it through to make sure you've got it all perfect it can take a bit of playing to get exactly right if you want to know how I did some of the other effects like reveal the route along the way and those sorts of things feel free to buy me a coffee in the link below and include your email and I'll happily answer any questions you have [Applause] okay so like I mentioned before this involves using Google Earth studio so make sure you've got access before you kick off now what you want to do is create a travel route in Google my maps it's the same as Google Maps but basically it just allows you to add each step along the way and then export it as a KML file that KML file can then be loaded into Google Earth studio so once you've exported the KML load it into Google Earth and this is where it can take a little bit longer because Google Earth has a number of features in it that you'll need to learn it doesn't take too long but if you follow along my process it should be pretty quick hot tip to change the camera angle and tilt you can use command or shift while moving your mouse or trackpad to get a better View as you can see what I did here was set a start Point by moving to the start location then make sure the timeline down the bottom was at the very start and click the keyframe button to set it as a starting view it looks like a diamond I will recommend though if you want the blue route line to reveal from top to bottom you will want to make it easy on yourself to begin with and just do a simple backwards fly through now similar to setting the start location and view you can just set the Finish location in camera view or like in the example if you want you can set a few midpoints along the way once you're happy with that export the video version with the route overlay visible this will be your top layer and will reveal the route as you travel along in the video you've just made then simply turn off the route overlay and Export another video to the same location without the route this will be your base layer then load both videos into your editing software next put both videos into your timeline and the top layer should be the one with the blue line route make sure the opacity of your top layer is 60 again so that you can see both and adjust the size and Alignment so the roads and tracks and words all line up along the way now to be able to get the blue line to reveal as you fly along the Route you'll need to mess with the crop tool so what you want to do is click the start of the top layer clip then set a keyframe and make the bottom crop a thousand pixels or 100 if you're using other software then move to the end of that clip click your keyframe button again and set the bottom crop to zero or somewhere near that number you will need to play with it to make sure the blue line reveals at the same speed as the fly through so you might need to set some middle points along the way or tweak it at the start and finish numbers to get it to line up smoothly with how the video will fly through once that's done render and play it through to make sure you've got it all perfect it can take a little bit of playing with it just to get it right okay so I hope this was helpful and you can now make your own free map animations for your travel or road trip videos once again this did take me days to learn and figure out if you want to know how I did the rest of the video buy me a coffee below and include your email and I'll answer any questions you have if you want to see more of how I use these maps in my videos check out these
