[Music] in East London there's an engineering Masterpiece miles and miles of sewers all interconnected most of the time the whole system needs no supervision a force of gravity does the work but that's not always enough fat is the main problem it's up to Rob and Dan to deal with it play the normal flow level is about just just like a magnet it's just fat attracts other fats so it just builds up and up fat build up can quickly lead to Serious consequences it's gonna be coming up in your premises so you could have feces or whatever effluence coming up in your back Garden it'll be flowing down the streets it just supposedly be a mess all right then what's your foot in this uh slippery now there isn't a full but it has to be tackled if only people could be more careful about the fat they throw away it's not easy to get off it's all right quite hard man consistency I suppose nuggets are the message is bin it don't lock it all right don't put your fat down the sewer that's what it ends up like this may look a simple job but it can be dangerous and that's why the lads wear gas detectors and that's one of the most dangerous things about cleaning it off is that you can disturb the gas pockets and then release the gas into the atmosphere it smells delicious doing a great job there Dan but chopping away the fat is only the first part we can move on this back but we're just moving the problem further down as it all ends up and the treatment works on the screens Dan The Grind fighter is not put off this job has become his life I love that job I wouldn't swap it for the world I mean this is one of the dirtiest sides of it but you get to see some fascinating architecture I'm in the work that must have gone into building these sewers the engineering for the time but obviously the best in the world but this is just an abuse clearly is the system that we were left Rob and Dan Heroes of the deep [Music] under the streets of Westminster Rob and Dan are still mining fat we've got more on you than what you cut off the wall but could there be a better way it seems there just might be a different solution the last few years we've been playing around with bugs in the sewer system to get help get rid of the fact they get into the fat and just uh eat it and they change it from a solid Mass into a liquid and then that that washes away you know more easily but with or without the new bugs it won't be long before the lands are back if you came back here in say another year 18 months it'll be more or less the same thing again you know that's a grand job then yeah coming up the satisfaction they get from this job sometimes takes them by surprise if I'd have gone into the careers office at school eight years ago and they said to me in eight years time you'll be working in the sewers I think if they're in the show me the door I'd have push them through it but you never know dear it's one of them things thanks to Rob and Dan the sewers of Westminster are working smoothly again [Music] in central London beneath the bustling streets there are over 40 000 miles of sewers the upkeep of the system is down to an elite team of Highly skilled technicians known for centuries as the flushers today rob a veteran of some 40 years in novice Dan are preparing to venture into a sewer of the Victoria embankment to confront their biggest problem more than 90 tons of fat is poured into the sewers annually by London's restaurants in the system it congeals and causes over half the 100 000 blockages the flushes have to deal with every year we've had a report there's a lot of fat down here so we're actually coming down let's have a look and see how we're going to sort the problem out they descend with gas monitors bleeping if there are toxic gases they'll quickly be alerted Rob and Dan soon stumble on an old friend yeah there look you're not going to find too many down there they like it nice and dry they keep up out of the way they're more likely drowned than there was a last stall it um they can only all their breaths for so long and then they drown the same as we go off you go London sewers built in Victorian times were mainly designed to deal with sewage now as well as the fat recent cleansing products are causing big problems it's the wipes and things you know the baby wipe to wiper the baby's Cottons and things like that and they just don't break down at all they go right the way through right the way down into the work because they all have to be taken out before the sewers sewage is actually treated this buildup of fat and wipes creates a thick crust on top of the sewage flow to gauge the extent of the problem Rob has no option but to hop in and take a closer look you can put the ladder in oh thanks if it looks as good as smells I just don't think about this when I eat Curry it's not too solid you know if we drop the flow in here and then get a Jetta in here and Stir It Up blast it through yeah they will be able to divert the sewage flow and then can use a power Jetta to flush the crust away but they can't combat the smell face masks would be useless when you're working in it all day long it actually gets you to your paws and you're gonna have a shower two or three showers a day and it just stays with you with the blockage assessed and the solution decided upon Rob and Dan can now carry on with their inspection further Downstream [Applause] [Music] in central London sewer flushes Rob and Dan are continuing their daily schedule they're about to look at another sewer run off the Victoria embankment in Westminster descending into this Victorian brick-built sewer it's soon obvious that conditions are quite different from the modern concrete Clan system they came across this morning the fungi that you see growing here grows on the fats and slime that's on the wall of the sewer I don't think it's edible I'm not going to try it to find out I mean as you can see the flow coming through here is Peak flow at the moment where you know sort of up off 12 1 o'clock everybody's going to lunch everybody's grabbing their brakes and going to the toilet this is sewage as you can see that in there there's fat there's rags and everything else that shouldn't come down in the sewer system as they go further down the flow to the bottom of the stairs they can retrieve some samples from the build up for closer inspection the main cause of the problem as ever is thousands of baby wipes that don't degrade and the congealed fat from the restaurants Above This is the uh solid fat to spin down here for quite a while you see it there that's solid and this stuff is a mixture of fresh fat and then this is all a mixture of toilet paper and everything that's a white as well as the fat and wipes causing so many problems there are other regular blockages that Rome can't really do much about well I'm not the pope and I wouldn't sort of say don't use condoms but um try using maybe a few less but I don't know I don't know what the answer is for that one I suppose we'll have to live with that if you wonder uh the size of the paint without the condoms are actually been used for it because they're bloody enormous might fit Danny Danny's been uplift the square area so he was up there the other week so you know probably one of his down there I'll put it in the bin that's it spin it don't block it that's it Danny's got the motto dealing with the unpleasant contents of the sewers is most people's idea of hell but to Dan with only two years experience on the job life couldn't be better I saw a bit of a thrill on it if you were to think about the job that you do and and what you were actually involved in is we're probably turn a lot of people's stomach there's not many people get to walk around under the Streets of London there's so much goes on that so many people don't know about so after a detailed assessment of the build up Rob now has a plan of action that extends for about I would say about 30 or 40 meters up the line it goes right the way through down the embankment I would imagine there's somewhere in a region of a few tons of fat anyway so basically we're going to get a Jitter in and we'll flush that through Rob and Dan can now head back to the surface and make their report in the coming weeks the team will be back to lower the flow in the system and flush the build up away and the blockages in the sewers were quickly washed away by the flusher teams to the southwest of London lies the leafy suburb of Twickenham on this day everything here seems calm thanks before is not as it seems there have been reports of shall we say smell in the neighborhood and that means business for grime fighter Joe and his team [Music] yeah it's a blocked drain see how deep it is flashbacks I think what else to do have to put the jet down it's just more of a flexible hose a bit more we've got some little nozzles on the end which forces the pressure we've got three at the back and then we've got one in the front which should clear the blockage no I told you out of ten it does yeah sorry mate just work its way down towards the main sewer now and um obviously there's a blockage in the main sewer the hose will just keep going Joe settles to the task with a will but it ain't working he's going to have to get to the root of the problem so sewer is running it's the right past the property so what we'll do now is we're gonna check the mine in the corner of the road and see if that's blocked or not we're going to look at now oh there you go the points blocked check the next one I think my skin comes here four blockages down it's simply a case of not leaving a stone unturned they must find the precise location assembly good Bingo the Search is Over that's good news yeah because we haven't got to keep going for miles and lifting these heavy covers but Joe soon realizes it's a tough one get the big lawyer in the Jade now Showtime you'll need a Big Bertha basically what they're gonna do this is a bit of high-powered jet there's 49 gallons a minute it's a lot more powerful than the little house you see yourself down our road so basically they're Jetta from the empty man I'll up into the blockage once I hit the block he's a hose to stop and then they go through the blockage pull it back and that'll just see the great blockage and the flow will start flowing down Big Bertha is big but is it big enough I've cheated up now to clear the blockage so what we do now is we go up to the Upstream panel to make sure they're spinning an engine Bertha has done her stuff but not wishing to be picky where is the smooth flow Joe decides to jettison the Jetta this is a Obsession Laurie basically what we do we're gonna suck the lump the rags and fat out because obviously we leave it in it Go Downstream cause another floppies [Music] oh well down the journal Joe is of course too professional to rest on his Laurels down there and now we move on to the next one hopefully get that one's clear this quick [Music] it's early evening in a rain-soaked Wolverhampton and for restaurant inspectors John and Faye it's the start of another evening shift keeping a watchful eye on some of the city's 500 eateries on their roster tonight is a local Indian takeaway due for a routine inspection it's often quite good to have a look at the menu just so you sort of familiarize yourself with the types of food they're doing so that allows you to ask perhaps the appropriate questions and if there's anything slightly unusual you can sort of question them about that if you need to after getting togged up first John always seeks out a basin to wash his hands we're trying to encourage businesses to sort of follow good hygiene practices so it's really good if business are seeing you know we've come in before we do anything we wash our hands you know it's just sort of encouraging them to do the same really also it gives you a great opportunity to make sure they've got the necessary hand washing facilities available another thing you can do when you go to wash your hands is actually check that the Basin has been used I.E is it bone dry sometimes you walk into a premise as you go to wash your hands they've been preparing food for a couple of hours and the sink's bone dry this one was wet okay I think I've just broke your your hand Joy slightly embarrassed about his rough treatment of their towel dispenser John heads outside to inspect the back of the restaurant we often come out into the sort of the behind the scenes bit if you like outside the rear door sort of to check the condition of the land surrounding unfortunately you just missed a rat run across the uh run across the ground obviously we don't want to see accumulations of waste and things that are going to Harbor rodents because if you encourage rodents into an area near a food premises you've got the risk then the additional risk of them finding their way inside not great with the door left open like I did see a wrap now with the door left open they run the risk of the Rat running straight into the food premises which is obviously a complete No-No so one thing we will be saying is make sure that the doors kept shut for John this inspection hasn't really got off to the best of starts first Impressions on on particularly good obviously we'll have to move and you know go inside and look more deta but just walking through didn't look particularly clean the structure looked in poor condition outside we've seen a rat we've seen accumulations of waste I think we perhaps need to get inside and look a bit more a bit more closely at what's happening inside in Wolverhampton restaurant inspectors John and Faye are continuing their inspection of a local takeaway within five minutes of arriving John has already seen a rat at the back of the premises and the general state of the restaurant hasn't impressed let's just hope a closer look at the kitchen proves more to his liking but measuring the temperatures in the fridge and the state of its appearance isn't a good start there's a slight problem with the temperature control in the fridge some of the foods are high a temperature higher than they should be it's not helped by the fact that these strips are perished as well as being perished as you can see they're also moldy and really quite 30 in places so obviously cleaning of this particular piece of equipment isn't up to scratch next phase a little concerned about the microwave well it's looking to be quite damaged and it's like peeling off so debris and dirt has gone down the back of it so it could start affecting the way the microwave works for John the building itself could also do with a bit of attention you've got some missing tiles here obviously expose some bare plaster I can see where sort of food Splat has occurred so we'd therefore be looking for those tiles or or a repair job to be done there to make sure that that is easy to clean also when you've got a situation like that you could have sort of physical contamination getting into people's food lumps of tile plaster paint Etc so those problems are plenty but nothing so far that could be deemed as serious next up though will be the cooking areas at the Indian takeaway in Wolverhampton restaurant inspectors John and Faye are wrapping up their surprise routine inspection all John's got to do is check out the cooking area the cleaning in the sort of the areas you can see isn't too bad it's the more hidden areas you know beneath equipment behind equipment and the more inaccessible areas that's where cleanings is particularly bad the sort of thing we're looking at here has been here longer than a couple of days probably a couple of weeks maybe as long as a month that sort of level so the restaurants had its fair share of problems with too much food being left out at room temperature the overall condition of the building itself and the need for a really thorough deep clean but it's the good food handling practices that they've seen in the kitchen that's impressed John and Faye we often think that the most critical part is the handling practice is although the place perhaps need a bit of structural Improvement and some improved cleaning the fact that they're handling the food in a safe manner does give us some confidence and we can sort of walk away thinking yeah people are safe to eat the food that's produced there [Music] thank you in dagenham the household is distress call means an unexpected and risky challenge for Pest Control repeat getting late in the evening there but we're about to leave this one a bit late we've done a wasp nest it's very rare to get them this time of year usually a diet and the females all gone somewhere to hibernate but this one's really active we're having to keep the bedroom window closed all the time now notice them coming off the roof and near The Gutter and then going in and there were so many of them my son-in-law tried to put a bit of filler actually to stop them getting in but because there were so many of them trying to get in it was a bit dodgy and it'd get stung so he did his best but it didn't seal him off oh Pete is a professional if anyone's going to get stuck it's going to be moved it's going to get stunned and it's much probably down to more stupidity so if I take the precautions right and measures right I shouldn't get stung the wasps nest is in the loft the trouble is they still think it's summer and they're still very much ready for action as you can see the size of the WASP here it's a female workers are half the size of these a pack more more Venom and more sting apart from that they all look regardless they're big or small has the advantage of surprise for now getting a bit leery now he wasps they're all going to be on us in a minute and I've just been stung on the leg and that hurts I'm going to isolate the nest with just ordinary pottery from Sprite this has stopped the bus when they cut if they do come out they've just stayed back openly in the nest right so now get me D5 this will kill him wipe them right there well what I'm gonna do I'm going to make a little incision rather him than me I'm full of what's been there now so what I'm going to do is then fill the hole up before I can I'm also going to put one at the bottom here well the actual fire cams in there and what's it doing it just I don't know it just it just literally mullers them they just can't stand it there's one there coming out with fire cam all on him look and you see look at how it's reacting look it's not really happy is it [Music] okay basically it takes about two hours for before I count the work and the nest and kill them all out right but Peter wants to remove the nest straight away it could go wrong everything can go wrong there you know it could be I could pull the nest a little bit and it'll break somewhere and then they'll all come out at me so I've got to be a bit careful okay over like that it's often said a wasp sting in winter is more powerful I've just been stung again despite being stung twice Pete gets the nest into the bag you can see yeah what would the Sprout put in there as well and sort of going a bit mental in there buzzing around for Pete just another Victory oh you're gonna be one happy bunny now the washer all in there you can see the size of it in there so I'll see you next year for another one thanks to Pete one dagenham family can get back to normal and leave Pete to examine his prize it's amazing it's all done on segments look if you can see look there's like little joins there which holds it together now he makes a surprising discovery you actually see that we've still got some more grubs to our chat as you can see away get ready to be incinerated the future for the planet may look Bleak but not for Pete he's off home sometimes when you eat out it may be better not to see the kitchens they can be a serious source of food poisoning but our hard-working band of grime Fighters don't have a choice in Wolverhampton Johnny and Faye two restaurant inspectors are on their way to check out a fish and chip shop oh yeah I'll check a few details with you first basically I'll go through feed handling practices but he's going to be talking about handling practices and I'm going to be kind of doing an assessment of the the structure I'll be looking to make sure that it's effectively proof for each pests that it's kept clean and the equipment's clean and in good repair Johnny begins his search the kitchen is not exactly spotless but at least there's no sign of pests it isn't long though before Johnny reveals a problem okay so that's a bit concerned and it looks like we've kind of got some dried potentially dried blood now rather alarmingly there's a there's a cucumber yes it's wrapped sort of a line in the line in the blood that material there contains bacteria because it's from raw meat yeah I know but I haven't end of the day some Royal everything to clean it you need to make sure that that doesn't come into contact with things like cucumber and tomatoes because then we're gonna have cross-contamination Johnny patiently explains the position it's not clear that his explanation is fully understood because it's quite a major cause of food poisoning and because of the the risk there I'm actually going to ask them to to Chuck that in the bin meanwhile Faye wants to check that they've been using the correct working practices so apart from the sanitizer what are the cleaning products have you got what are the things I think so where'd you use the bleach then the sanitizers on all these surfaces okay and correct working practices don't include a freezer doubling as a Dustbin if these have these kebabs been cooled down after cooking these ones look these have already been on this stuff coming in the meat just throw out those root Tomatoes We'll Wash it in the freezer if you're going to throw it out outside there this is lots of smelling but what's better to have a bad smell outside or contaminate the food that you're going to serve to customers despite the owner's excuses it seems that food which should be in the bin could be being sold to customers what is that is that fish scraps is it yeah I think it's more important you get them straight in the bin okay it soon becomes clear that this little shop is full of Horrors this is um some equipment that they use to slice cucumber and tomato um that hasn't been washed very recently has it no the owner claims he doesn't use it if you don't use it and it's dirty why don't you throw it in the bin Oh no you're gonna wash it up because you use it yeah okay you try to offer him some advice and and assistance and he tries just to to sort of rubbish it if you like by saying he hasn't had time I mean you know it's just little things that perhaps indicate that they're not cleaning um as thoroughly and as regularly as they should the restaurant is far from perfect but Johnny and Faye have decided that this is not the moment for sudden and drastic action there needs to be some improvements say revisit will happen in a couple of months [Music] across town AJ is the man from the council charged with clearing the council properties after Allison and Steve have completed their work today AJ has arrived at a flat where a man has died his job is to assess the state of the flat so he can brief the cleanup team and get the apartment cleared out refurbished and led to another tenant as soon as possible first impressions don't look that good it's jam-packed at the moment first thing you'll obviously look for is if there's any fleas in the property they tend to jump on white items so far so good as AJ moves through into the bathroom things are getting worse a pleasure ate the word it's a bit disgusting really you don't want to see anyone live like this really do you but that's the way the society is at the moment people don't believe what I actually see you can tell people everything in how bad it was but seeing is believing really and that's that's when people sort of realize how bad it really is in here next up is the bedroom a sad and revolting vision of how the old man lived and died looking at it it looks like if it's um this is where he's passed away here sometimes he feels spooky yeah when you know somebody's died in the property you get you get this in like tingles but it's part of the job the sitting room is full to bursting with all manner of clutter and rubbish this is often the norm with single occupancy Flats the tenants often tend to hoard the weirdest items over many years until they can't even get around their own flat all the AJ needs to do now is photograph the contents before his cleanup team arrives [Music] in Leicester AJ's crack clearance team have arrived to clear out the Dead Man's flat AJ has to get the council property cleared and available to rent as soon as possible as there are now new targets he needs to meet only allowing a maximum of 21 days before the flat must be let out to a new Council tenant fortunately this time there's no danger of needles or drug paraphernalia in the property Dennis and Sean can get stuck in and when they get going there's no stopping them everything that isn't nailed down in the property ends up in their bins these are all his personal items there I know it's sad like if someone's died in the room but you're in the job every day it's official don't ask for your mind anymore you get an album of photos and it's sadly because there's a lot of memory there wedding photos your granddads your parents once it's gone in here it's gone with the speed these properties need to get turned around sometimes the boys can get there a little early we'll be done in the house and actually walked in and there was a woman left looking over the teller and we've come to emptier and she should have been there like I mean that's what you could work it up against really to make their life more difficult often The Lads can't park their Dustbin Lorry near the property and this flat is no exception most of their time is spent taking the bins and other heavy items to the Lorry a problem that slows their progress enormously either way though within a matter of hours this flat is devoid of any trace of the old man a sad but necessary conclusion of the life the gentleman led the whole place is empty now now what we can do is they're basically check out all the doors the windows the flooring whether it needs painting or not even though the place looks pretty clean AJ needs to install a new kitchen a new bathroom new light sockets and give the whole flat a lick of paint before the next tenant can move in often AJ will recharge the previous tenant for any damage to the property even if it means getting payment out of the deceased person's estate but on this occasion he puts it all down to wear and tear and there's nothing to pay within just a few days of making the renovations the flat will be led to a new and hopefully grateful tenant to flatten a Gloucester Council house has recently been abandoned city inspector Andy Whitewood has come to inspect so we're just gonna have a look and see what it's like oh dear not one of the best ones it's only beneath all the mess is a recently renovated flat I've got a dog and that's the entire family was eating dog food Goodness Me but there we have got evidence of flies and Nuggets oh dearly it gets worse Andy knows nothing of what happened here but whoever lived here cleared off in a hurry people live like this and think it's some sort of statement against somebody else and they're the ones that are going to suffer because preparing food in this sort of conditions can't have been healthy no more so than life in the living room Andy finds clues about some of the characters in this squalid story no that's not the former honor it seems there was a dog excrement and a couch potato he was a drinker and a smoker it looks like it just gets even better as we go through the dog mess is bad enough but there could be worse to come by hasn't been flushed for a while by the looks of it but I mean there's all the cleaning stuff here just a shame that it never seems to got used Andy already knows the previous tenant was a dog owner but just what kind of owner soon becomes clear hello there I think we found the dog Kenneth I don't think the dog went for regular walks straight I mean this just shows a total lack of respect for anybody's Health including their own oh damn eh I'm talking the handles with his teeth while it looks right and he's seen enough to make his assessment we're looking at about a thousand pounds to clear it and while it's empty it's a potential Target as well for squatters and Vandals the quicker we can get it re-let the better and in order to do that Andy will call on the services of extreme cleaners Dave and Acer a lot of extra mint and rubbish in there um some nasty food surprises as well in the kitchen so you should be finished in an hour or so back in Gloucester extreme cleaners Dave and Acer are preparing to tackle the filthy flat hopefully it's not smell anyone but ASA soon discovers that his optimism is misplaced oh he sticks a dog respond as soon as you come from the door okay they quickly identify the source of the terrible smell oh this is where the dog's been staying yep oh I could spawn it dog owners themselves Dave and Acer find it hard to understand oh it's disgusting I mean put my dog lock him up in a room like this well we'll knock him up in a room before we start but don't means exercising these fresh air basically it needs to peel on a grass no that's just not right you find claw marks at the doors and I'm just trying to get out this is a sad real sad but whatever the reason for this sordid situation there's a job to be done Acer is new to Phil fighting so I was doing three years at College doing Brit Lane and obviously other the building industry is going down and there's no work going so I've got an application and obviously like makes them still working is already experienced the worse the job has to offer the worst I have done is a it's definitely got to be suicide cleaner it isn't nice to clean up that much blood and everything but we just got to do is think about oh it's not really blood clean it up try and get it up you just get on with it just think of your waste packets at the end of the week Dave put some abandoned air freshener to good use he's been filled fighting longer than Acer as well it's a job he literally fell into I became unaware after an accident um including windows on a ladder and I'd fallen off broken my hair and uh I was ring around for jobs as soon as I was able fit enough to go back to work again and here I am two years later in my view I think it's the best thing I ever did but sometimes the work can present some very unusual challenges some jobs you go to and you you just wish you weren't going there for example in a house we didn't chant I mean and the sister was sat on the stairs crying they wanted all memories of the house got on everything gone and cried all the time we were there she just sat on the top step and you've got to work right now it's you know it brings it on to you didn't it [Music] move out the larger items it's clear they work well together as a team they're excellent you know they know I've got dodgy hits so certain jobs I can't do and the lights are there straight away like you know they don't even let me try it and that's that's excellent right you know what I mean it's a team thing so and that's what we all do like you know we all mucking together this job usually begs more questions than answers but today is a remarkable exception outside a neighbor appears with news of the abandoned dog a friend of ours knew um the owner who can't look after the dog so they said would your mum like have a dog to look after and I said yeah that'd help her out because she's um she's her own pensioner and we thought that would do her good and we only used to um go out um we believe um sort of like eight o'clock in the morning to about nine o'clock at night left a dog behind and of course she used to um howl quite a bit we had to take her to the vets because she had ear infection and eye infections she had lack of hair on her tail she's actually on her way over so um we're still on a regular basis at least three or four times a week Halton by the rescue story The Lads continue to clear and look forward to meeting the lucky Mart back in Gloucester The Lads are putting the finishing touches to the abandoned Council flat what we do is we neutralize all the bacterias all the smells for the next family that moves into the flat so in these then we know it's practically germ free and hopefully the smell of the dogs will be gone at the end of the day there's satisfaction in a job well done looking good everything's going well nothing remains of the previous tenant or the abandoned dog a new tenant can soon be found but now amazingly an old one returns hello oh yeah we really just enjoys a lot of fuss and love and um this is one thing that we thought that Mum could provide for her because mum hasn't got anybody else to really to worry about which always gives you a nice welcome when you get back where you're lovable she's perfectly happy maybe slightly overweight due to the Retreats that we give her so in the end it's just another Shaggy Dog Story That's a Wrap and cats let's go first to aberystwyth in Wales where extreme cleaners John a Peter and Carl have been called out to clear a flat or is it a drug stand they've been warned that they've got to be careful immediately the signs are worrying the lands have been told this isn't going to be a straightforward job we've been told is might be some drug use and this looks like the room that it's been done in so you just got to be careful there's no needles hiding Beyond any sofas or cushions or anything sadly it seems these drug users were also parents but kids room yeah the previous occupiers have left in a hurry not that they're the sort who would have cleaned up anyway there's a lot of clothes on the floor babies clothes if there are infected needles here Johnny wants are having to tread very carefully indeed this was a drugs Den making sure that there's nothing in here that shout that could fit me rifling through the rubbish it's now clear what happened the previous occupiers were told to leave all right explains now that they've been evicted and they've obviously been given the notice to get out to get their stuff out as well but they also haven't even bothered to trying to get their stuff up has taken its toll on normal life it all could have been so different if they'd been able to lick the drug habit they disregarded their health as much as they disregarded their home and they've got small needles appear again like to be news still got the needle in it cupboard it's got the covering on but for the looks of it being there might be more found one in the kitchen found in here so it could be anywhere these needles could still be harmful well you never know who's been injecting themselves with them so it could be anything hepatitis HIV anything like that really there's evidence of lives falling apart and the evidence hasn't been destroyed I just found some photos of uh someone with a bombs you know is used for like drugs and stuff gotta be careful all the time because you don't know the houses you're going into what the people are up to or what they do good mother or father thing to do is they're doing drugs around your kids especially when they're by the looks of it it's hard drugs it's quite disgusting really but it makes me uh quite angry to see this sort of stuff going on your own children there's not much we can do about it in arborist with Johnny Peter and Kyle see an end in sight the drugs Dan has almost been cleared it's looking good not far off there now we've cleaned all the other rooms it's just these sofas just having a look to make sure there's no shops in the sofa before we actually carry it down there are inevitably ups and downs in this job the least there's something different every day you know it's uh you know the longest your other job is yeah a couple of days really so you know when you come in in the mornings right it's gonna be something different whether it's window cleaning or something like this uh blood jobs crime scene you know it's just different all the time it's pretty good Johnny and his team think they've got the measure of this place but there's one more surprise well as a cleaner place embarking Peter the pest controller has arrived at a premises to continue his confrontation with one of the country's most unwelcome household guests right we're embarking and I've got a cockroach job I was called out yesterday and the infestation is quite bad so I've got to come back and sort it out more far and seriously cockroaches are one of the most difficult pests to eradicate Legend has it that they are the only creatures that could survive a nuclear Holocaust they also spread diseases like dysentery typhoid and gastroenteritis all in all a revolting and formidable opponent for Peter come here yesterday and I found loads of cockroaches all different sizes from nymphs to adults on all the cupboard areas if we can have a look in this one here as you can see we've got a couple of cockroaches down the side here most jobs I'd go to you only see telltale signs which are like all black dots from the feces which gives you evidence that there is cockroaches there they're more nocturnal if you've got any big investigation as we've got in this kitchen you will actually see them running around during the day as I will Point them out going around because I can see a few now if you can see one you can identify the spaces which we've got the German cockroach here but this ass for some reason if you can see loads of them running around which you can you know that the fish station has been going on for a long time if you come here at night the floor would actually get up and literally move all the cupboard areas will move I've spoke to the owner as well and she said it's a nightmare for Peter and most importantly his clients to have a chance at all of getting rid of the Cockroaches understanding their life cycle and how they live is vital to potential success I'll carry this around for the people as you see the owner and they'll explain like there's the adults which we have here and then you've got the egg capsule which is that in the back which they carry then you've got the nymph and then your nymph stage as you can see as they're getting bigger as they molt out they get bigger and bigger and then on the last molt they produce the wind cases and then that's how you get the adults which then sexually mature for breeding again this life cycle lasts about three months and in that time a single female will release thousands of eggs to add to the infestation to get rid of cockroaches the only successful way is the use of poison the one thing you mustn't ever do is tread on them you'd never ever Crush the cockroach especially females if you stamp on them you're dispersed in the eggs the eggs are going to match out anyway so you don't want to spread the infestation even bigger Peter the council's pest controller is preparing to unleash his tube of poison on the unsuspecting infestation of cockroaches to them though they'll initially think it's Christmas if a kid wanted a lollipop or see any sweets they would run for the Suites before they would eat their dinner and this is same with this which I can actually show you in this house by putting a little drop down and watching them run to it straight away so croaches are normally nocturnal but it just takes a little drop of the poison to coax them out of their Slumbers it's secondary poisoning and once the adults eat it or the nymphs eat it if they die and an adult will eat another adult which is dead or eat a nymph which is dead then they will get secondary poisoning and they will die as Peter starts to inject the sweet tasting poison wherever he can that's safe to the children in the house it gives him a little time to reflect I love this job it's one of the best jobs on fan on destroying stuff I do a lot of hunting anyway I got Firearms I've got a lot of deer stalking but the best thing I enjoy more than anything is catching rats I know it sounds silly I bet going hunting but I do like conservation as well especially in the endangered spaces I mean if the German cockroach becomes endangered and we found them that's probably I'll try and set up some former group and try and get them back together again after injecting the poison all over the kitchen it's going to be about four weeks before Peter knows whether his plan has worked but he's sure it will all the Cockroaches will go and I'm very confident come back in four weeks and you'll see a difference you've got to be confident in this game because if you're not you're letting yourself down and you're letting the public down and at the end of the day that's what I'm here for to help the public in Leicester a new recruit Craig is being shown the ropes by Kevin they've been sent to clear a house abandoned by the tenant so you see Craig it's all a bit of a Doddle that's not so bad anyway does it no it's not an air anyway this should be fairly easy I don't want to say that might be for an easy day that looks like a dark hand pointing upstairs hmm it's not a good sign and that's what we get paid for so we'll get into it get stuck in it'll be gleaning by the time we've done cleaning that's good being positive it shouldn't take too long fill the bath up with bleach fill the toilet up with the Bleach get a good rod in an outfiller fingers crossed it'll go down so Craig how was it on your first day of course it smells terrible no oh the bathroom running water as well as I'm gonna cry oh my oh god there are kisses this is a job which may take some getting used to in Leicester rookie Craig is facing a tough initiation task it's time they know what to expect and it's horrible Jake's first week so it's his first dirty job there we go the only consolation is that it doesn't get very much worse than this [Music] I drew the Short Straw on this job definitely now I do feel sorry for him though but I have somebody's had to go at cleaning this out so let's use that for that even Grime fighting veterans like Kevin sometimes feel it's all too much I'm gonna go if only machines did it all that's the wet and dry you can you always say Obviously to suck wet stuff up and drying today but the looks of it it's a bit of both in there so there we go and if only machines didn't sometimes make the problem worse the stench has got twice as bad it really has it is really evil the toilet's going down though isn't it also as you're sucking it out of there the water's going down so you might be able to clear it up with a buff and even when the machine has worked there's still a problem no [Music] that's full Craig Yep this machine needs empty in now yeah well I can't even get in the back it's your job to enter where we're going to empty oh she can't get through the back goal yeah no we can't we'll sort it it's at times like these that Grime Fighters have to take a break you're gonna have a bite to eat now have us breakfast yeah have a minute's break and then get back in and tackle it again Craig doesn't admit to doubts about his new job Kevin does it for him smells horrendous we're not paid enough to do this it does matter because now it does make you wonder why it does but then it's a job at the end of the day I do enjoy the job just not this side of it that somebody's got to do it so someone in the office might explain how they get rid of the waste any suggestions yeah yeah oh I am yeah okay right we're gonna take it get rid of it has to travel with 50 liters of sewage nobody wants it in Leicester Kevin and his new recruit Craig have emptied the vacuum cleaner and are ready to start a game does it follow up just going to Barrel back up oh that's they're in this together but even when this stage is over a lot of work Remains the builders come in and rip the lot out so is this job just seems basically completely waste of time but never mind well it smells getting worse the more you're disturbing it the worse it's becoming it's been a rude awakening for Craig at least he's not been sick yet that's the main thing yet yet yeah he's doing really well it's not the sort of thing you want on your first week smelling a bit fresher now anyway yes there's still the mark of the big black hand downstairs right and mate because you're taller than me you can reach your air can't you it's just one of those days will it ever end this is the worst I've ever seen I wasn't expecting this Craig is left to his own devices well Kevin finishes off the bathroom hell of a lot cleaner smells fresher anyway that's the main thing they've given the builders who come in next a much easier task I think that's about it as Craig works on Kevin reflects even with his experience this house has got him down I'll just know if it were a member of our family you know you'd step in he'd never let it get to that state so but when the hard work is completed there's satisfaction the marathon is over and thanks to two determined crime Fighters Victory is theirs for Kevin and Craig it's definitely time for a shower and a rest [Music] first in Newcastle Council enforcement officers are investigating a potential health risk and the team led by Tracy soon discover there's nothing potential about this one so this is the property um that we've had reported to us that's supposed to be filthy and verminists and must be a lot of feces so we're going to go in and do an assessment we've got our contractor here to give us a call an elderly couple live here and they've had to move out Tracy's task is to assess the situation and take action smells filthy smells like feces um rotting food rotting food just general dirt and rottenness even for this team it's one of the worst cases there's bikes of rubbish all over there's a buildup of grime on the floor what appears to be used toilet roll all over the place the bath appears to be full of toilet roll appears to be feces on the wall here um obviously transferred from someone's hand and the kitchen's no better well obviously there's been a fire in here at one point and you can see the walls and ceiling are black with smoke and the front of the cooker has melted I'm guessing that's from the fire as well just generally filthy fridge doors missing but they've still been used in the fridge food's starting to to rot in there I'm not opening the freezer and Tracy can only wonder who would live like this they couldn't cope um due to maybe age or it being in firm or or unwell um and people often don't want to ask for help and so they get into this state and they can't see a way out of it so it just gets worse and worse and worse so hopefully we'll be fair to step in and get the necessary people involved next door Tracy makes a bizarre Discovery Well you do have to wonder why there's so many soft toys here but lots of people collect lots of different things if that's this person's hobby then that's their hobby who are we the judge whatever it is it's not a Teddy Bear's Picnic now the property has to be cleared and made safe but it's not that easy the legislation that we're doing it on it doesn't allow us to dispose of everything because obviously they're people's personal possessions it only allows us to just dispose of things that are prejudicial to health or unwholesome or harmful to health well you would classes rubbish somebody else's treasured for a long long time it is difficult sometimes [Music] okay it's not very good in here obviously this is the fridge door that has come out of the kitchen there's a lot of cuddly toys a huge amount of cuddly toys bears at one moment and now it seems a flea circus I think I've just been bitten on the leg so uh there's every chance that there is some sort of pest in here possibly fleas or something Tracy decides that Swift action has to be taken we want to get the tenants move back in here as quickly as possible and we need to get the property cleaned up because if there are pests or Vermin in here we need to get them eradicated and so as they don't start spreading down the block back at the Newcastle property a grind Fighters team Steve and Decker are joined by a new Recruit Jack the thing these walls can't talk but this is nicotine stand there I think the walls would have originally been this color rather than the brow like that on the outside I think this is probably feces and from people's hands there's mess everywhere first things first I'm going to start with doing the bathroom because it's a pretty bad State plus we might need this during the day so hence the reason I'm doing that first it's your specialty nobody else did it The Lads set too with all the confidence of Youth it seems the tenants were full of good intentions they've got quite a lot of expensive cleaning products here but they're obviously never got around to using them brand new never used as the team Disturbed the rubbish they wish they hadn't I hit the smell of rotten food it's one smell I don't like I don't I don't like any smell like rotten smell but rotten food gets me more than anything else like feces and things doesn't make me feel like I want to be sick but rotten Foods really catches you in the back of your throat and for the new boy Jack it's a baptism of Fire there's food all over the place dirty rubbish stuff that's been lying there for years so just discussing really some people live in houses like this you know so it's horrible no no I think the fridge and the toilets really free everyone else over there to get more satisfaction from getting them cleaned up that's why I always do them yeah and is he seeing things the rubbish is moving something is moving but it's not the rubbish and we look at the size of that for a bit of lava see your nest in here somewhere like oh there it is how many types of insect did David Attenborough say there were I think the Lava haven't come across them the whole place will need fumigate oh there please see a jumping but now we found fleas and beetles throughout um and that we haven't even got down into the depth of the rubbisher to them people's been sleeping on assets shopping isn't it how people can live in this day and age like this there's another Nest there Decker believes this is a war we're losing ten years ago you want to go in a house once maybe twice a year to do something like this but now it's just getting more and more common every other week lesbians Steve makes a new discovery further up the food chain smaller or a large Mouse by a lot of it I think it's probably more likely going to be a rat my friend this in the cupboard Under the Stairs looks like a crunchy or something you can see the teeth marks the rats teeth marks in here and rats mean the threat of disease so the toys are toast any of the Vermin or any of the insect could have been on these Teddy version will not be aware of it sure it's just hygienic really to get rid of them Debbie can't be sentimental in this case toys aren't us the team will soon be back for a deep clean the Newcastle property the deep clean team are hard-headed and are proud of their achievements I left this bit because obviously just to give an example because it still looks quite dirty as this is a sort of difference that we've um caught with in the ceiling for my kitchens all brilliant White Tiles what's nice and easy looking a lot easier to clean than this anyway see you later job done the lads leave the house for Tracy to give it the once over [Music] false left nose for the the fumigators to come in tomorrow and spray the property to get rid of all the Cockroaches and flies and fleas Etc and then all we need then is a new kitchen almost all the contents have been removed before there can be any new tenants the house will have to be fumigated in future we can only hope this vast array of cleaning products won't be wasted Hope
