hey everyone it's cashew today's adventure brings us to Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville Kentucky this place is amazing has several notable graves lots of beautiful sculptures and this Sphinx behind me has a Cincinnati connection so let's check it out our venture starts here this is one of the oldest monuments here at the cemetery it's known as the peasley Sphinx and it's carved from a single piece of granite and it's 14 feet long and the Sphinx arrived two years after the death of Charles and it's believed that they did not request this but rather the sisters of Eleanor brought it and the reason being there's a similar Sphinx up in Cincinnati at Spring Grove Cemetery and that stands over the grave of Ella's relatives when the Sphinx first arrived it raised quite a few eyebrows for one thing this is Egyptian art rather than traditional Christian art so they brought this Sphinx in rather than having a cross or an angel and it also did not help that this grave is along the main thoroughfare of the cemetery so whenever someone drove by they would see this unfortunately you can see where people have chipped away with the grave collecting a souvenir and this is the Sphinx that inspired Eleanor sisters to have one placed over her and her parents graves this Finks is in Cincinnati at Spring Grove Cemetery and it's placed over Ella's relatives graves look at this beautiful fountain and this is the grave of Patty Hill she was a kindergarten teacher and she is best known for writing the song happy birthday to you I kind of expected a little bit more than just a plain marker like this and one of the people who works here at the cemetery told me he spent six months trying to find this and once he found it he thought you mean that's all there is so very simple very simple grave I love the graves that have the Chinese characters edged into them this over here says 1934 to 2010 and this says 1941 and the husband is still alive and this is one of the most famous graves here in the cemetery this is the grave of Muhammad Ali arguably the greatest fighter who ever lived and his monument says service to others is the rent you pay for your room in heaven there's a funny story about the time the Beatles met Muhammad Ali this was back when he was Cassius Clay and they were performing in Miami Florida on The Ed Sullivan Show for the second time and at the same time Sonny Liston and Cassius Clay were training for their big fight Brian Epstein the Beatles manager thought would be a great publicity stunt to have their photos taken with Sonny Liston and Liston declined he had no idea who they were and he really didn't care and he refused so Brian Epstein reached out to Muhammad Ali's camp and they said sure come on down and there's some really great photos of the Beatles with Muhammad Ali yucking it up on there in the ring and pretending they're being knocked out and after they left they said about how nice Ali was with everyone and after they left Ali asked one of his trainers who were those sissies so I guess Fame is relative and this is a view from behind Ali's grave this is a wonderful tribute to him he also has the distinction of being depicted on a comic book cover finding Superman in the ring here's a really nice sculpture of two corgis plain and close to Muhammad Ali's grave is this beautiful monument of birds it's starting to rain on me so you'll probably hear the sound of the rain hitting my own rollit but that's okay this is one of the most spectacular sculptures I've seen here at the cemetery this is the grave of sculptor barney bright and his wife and he's also notable for doing the sculptures of the frito-lay magician and the flower of woman and I'll show you those in a little bit this was actually his second submission to the cemetery his first one had been rejected and I don't know what that depiction looked like this one was finally accepted by the cemetery and next to Barney's grave is yet another grave I discovered that belongs to a cat lover here's one of the sculptures that Barney Brite made this is the grave of sondra currie twist she was in Kentucky beauty queen and fashion model in 1981 she died at the age of 40 when her car hit a tree and it said that she made her financial success in real estate and oil and although her husband and eldest daughter have long since died visitors will come and place a flower in her hand next to sandy twists grave is this grave sculpture that has tremendous detail its two children releasing butterflies down at their feet as a mason jar releasing another butterfly and the detail of this is amazing this place is more of a sculpture garden than it is a cemetery in some ways I mentioned the Muhammad Ali grave was one of the most famous graves here at the cemetery this is the other Kerlin Harland Sanders founder of the Kentucky Fried Chicken Empire it seems like someone left an offering of ketchup and a french fry here's another sculpture Barney Brite was commissioned to make this is for the grave of Harry Leon Collins in 1970 Harry made the career switch from frito-lay sales manager to Frito Lays full-time corporate magician his stage name was mr. magic and when he died unexpectedly in 1985 his widow who was also his onstage assistant commissioned Barney Brite to make this sculpture here's Barney's signature and it's customary for visitors to leave coins at his feet if you're looking for Harry's grave it's on the write down about 300 yards from the Colonel Sanders grave on my way up to Harry's grave I saw several beautiful sculptures and here's one of them this is the Tree of Life with a dove ascending to heaven and this one looks like a Picasso sculpture this grave is lovingly referred to as Jack the loyal dog and this is the grave of James David Bohannon who was a prominent Louisville thoroughbred horse breeder he was also on the board of directors of the Kentucky Derby Museum and when he died rather than placing a horse at his grave they placed a sculpture of one of his dogs and on the collar that says Jack oftentimes visitors will pay tribute by leaving dog toys here at Jack's feet and this is a very nice grave this is the grave of a young girl and on her headstone are pages from her diary and you can actually turn the pages on the book and above her grave is a sculpture of Jesus with his arms held out welcoming children this is the grave monument of Richard Alan Herman jr. he died when he was 16 and he's depicted here wearing casual clothing with a pair of angel's wings and he's holding a sword in an on guard position and next to him is his mother Lori who's still alive and she's wearing a peasant blouse with an open mid-drift and this makes her a rare angel and venereal art with a bellybutton and here they are from the side you might be able to get a better view there's a lot of Sun and shadow out here today and this is the grave of Samantha and McDonald in 2006 at age three Samantha wrote her tricycle into the family swimming pool and drowned and her family commissioned this monument to be made as an expression of their spiritual devotion and here's Samantha plain on a swing held up by Jesus and this is nice her monument includes an area for a birdbath with little bronze Birds next to it her family included the words to her favorite song jesus loves me here at the base of Samantha's handprint along with the handprints of her two siblings as you can see this Cemetery is fantastic I keep wanting to call it a museum because the sculptures here are so just beautiful and awe-inspiring I am blown away and this is probably my favorite Cemetery I've ever visited if not it's at least in the top three one thing I really want to point out is that the staff here are the friendliest I've ever encountered at any Cemetery they were helpful they were patient you know I went back to them several times trying to find some of these graves because they're not easy to find and they were always helpful and in fact one member of the security staff signed on to my channel right here before I even left so thank you John if you like this video give it a thumbs up be sure to subscribe to
