King Cole's Orange Colored Sky Orange Colored Sky is a frequent player on Fallout 4's in-game radio and was the first featured in marketing for Fallout New Vegas bid is also very known for its old timey music and you'll get it throughout this entire episode we see Cooper Howard preg ghouling played by Walton goggin doing some rope tricks for a birthday party in a picturesque town on his onlookers applaud currently yes Cooper Howard is performing at a children's birthday party but he was also a successful actor during this time in Fallout 76 recent America's playground update they had posters in the game of Howard's other movies Prime video a couple months ago released a special live report on their YouTube page like the boys bringing us bot news Clips they released a radio program of man losing his mind behind the closed vaults after the nukes the man mentions how Howard is the lead actor in a smashit movie called The Man from Dead Horse and it was so good it was about to get a sequel in the works he also welcomes us to the vaults in the latest trailer and I'm assuming it's as the famed actor Cooper Howard so he should be making bank right well wrong because our boy has to pay alimony in L of his divorce so that's probably coming from his Hollywood movie money and why we see him performing at child birthday parties the sad part is in the last month's trailer we saw what I assume is his wife and him kissing inside a vault room but unfortunately that happy ending clearly ends somewhere and while Howard doesn't seem to have any official affiliation with vault tech now he and his daughter do support the same shades of yellow and blue that we'll see in future Vault wellers we also see Mr handy voiced in the show by the incredible Matt Barry if you don't know Matt Barry he's the good time boy Mar rotten Soldier but sweet cheese New York City I can't do that voice this is the name of the robotic Butler these handy units come in many Specialties including doctors chefs and of course weapons ooh we see Mr handy pushing Lucy on a gurnie from a future episode in the trailers we immediately discover something is a Miss as the radio news broadcast reports this negotiations were scheduled to continue today as the White House had no comment about the president's whereabouts then it gets immediately switched off as Nat King Cole sings and the bottom fell out I went into a spin the negotiations are likely between America and China who in the games had been fighting in the Sino American War for the past 10 years and were in something of a stalemate the president having disappeared means he's probably hiding on a deep sea oil rig that will become the headquarters for The Enclave The Enclave is mentioned later in the episode and is a group of American Elites who had a plan to write out the nuclear fallout and safety and comfort to rebuild America later they claimed to be the new US government as many of its members were former US officials for about the last month of the war the president and the other Enclave members were hiding out at a big oil rig leaving America leaderless the TV news then broadcast talks about the Spectre of nuclear war but that too gets Switched Off and this idealic Suburban housewife is determined to shut out all warnings the news anchor sits in front of the world map and it's similar to Like Walter konai and other news anchors from the 50s 60s the TV prop comes straight out of the games as well Fallout 3 and New Vegas Nat King Cole sings flash bam Alakazam and goodbye my God am I Nat am I Natalie singing flash bam Alakazam and goodbyes is really telegraphing what's to come and before we get too into it let's chat out the timeline very fast the opening scene does not take place during the 1950s Fallout is set in an alternative version of our world heavily inspired by the 1950s America but what we see here is actually set in 2077 I didn't mention that at the beginning I probably should have Cooper doesn't want to give his thumbs up which is definitely an homage to the classic Fallout vault boy thumbs up here it's described you hold your thumb up to a mushroom cloud and if the cloud is smaller than your thumb you run for the hills if it's bigger don't bother running the reason why Vault boy is giving the thumbs up is because of this reason because back in the day in America teachers taught us the mushroom cloud thumb trick one of the party guests says this Pinko you still took my money Pinko is a term widely used during the Cold War to describe people a bit lighter than red or to put it in another way favorable to Communism these people were often Outcast from society hence Howard having to do the kids birthday party in order to pay off his alimony he's being blacklisted from Hollywood the birthday kid's name is Roy like Roy Rogers another American actor famous for playing Cowboys his [ __ ] dad spends most of the beginning being spiteful and rude towards Cooper and snaps photos while drinking this beer this beer is actually from the video game it's fish brow pale ale you can see it in Fallout New Vegas at the Lucky 38 Casino his camera is also super vintage though like the TV Fallout features junk items like cameras occasionally and they all sort of resemble this one and I love how the flash of the camera is so bright and Loud also foreshadowing the blast to come when the children sit down for cake and TV my favorite meal of the day they immediately watch a weather report that the weatherman doesn't want to report on because we might die soon and rightfully so the mom once again switches the dial for happier news we get an ad for nacac Cola which is a staple and Fallout games then an ad for Fallout 4's vehicle the zip a micro car made alongside the flea then sugar bombs a cereal you can pick up in the game the kids settle on grognak the Barbarian typically a comic character in the games brought to animation here the nuke lands in Los Angeles and we see the crappy dad escaping into their bomb shelter refusing access to his friend and his daughter the hatch reads fallout shelter which is of course very descriptive but also the name of the Fallout mobile game everyone's scattering and Cooper rides off on his horse with his daughter and I think this red car that he passes is the Cherry Bomb from Fallout 4 as the music crescendos we see the nuke land all over La you can see the Griffith Observatory and from Trailer footage this seems like a a popping spot later we also see a billboard for vault tech reading prepare for the future which is a fitting message as we transition to the next scene The Fallout title materializes through the fire caused by the explosions we'll see different versions of this title revealed in future episodes with similar thematic references we jumped 219 years later the year is 2296 this will be the farthest we've ever been in the Fallout timeline the last we saw this universe was actually in 2287 and Fallout 4 We're introduced to Lucy in Vault 33 Lucy is the daughter of the overseer played by Kyle mclaughin the overseer is selected to run the Vault to the vault's tech specifications Lucy is applying for a trade with Vault 32 that happens every 3 years it seems as though the trade does not always involve people but has in the past this idea of swapping Vault dwellers may have a bit more to it than meets the eye so stay tuned we'll get back into that in a little bit we see a ton of fun Fallout Easter eggs in her request Montage so let's go through them really quick this montage is set to Perry Como don't let the stars get in your eyes Lucy lists a few skills including repair science and speech all different types of Vault boy bobbleheads in the games that can improve your stats in the classroom we see some dates on the board including 1969 the in Universe year the commonwealths were created a reshuffling of the 50 states into 13 districts you'll notice the US flag bearing those 13 or technically 14 Stars the 14th representing the nation also in the classroom are posters depicting various types of corn grown in Vault 33 their main objective as a vault in watercolor paintings of mushroom clouds presumably as an art project for the students next Lucy mentions her work with the gymnastics Club in the background there's a poster that says stay fit stay focused a poster that we see in the the games I love the 50s era exercise equipment in the background even including a vibrating exercise belt like back there Lucy and her father watch an old movie featuring a cowboy It's unclear if this is Howard so we're going to pretend it is Lucy tends to the community garden in the background you can see some trellises these are most likely for Tes a plant hybrid between a tomato and a potato as corn doesn't typically grow in the trellises like these Lucy's brother is play an atomic command a game you could find and play on your pit boy just like he's doing in Fallout 4 Pit Boys are vault tech issued smart devices that contain everything from your inventory to dumb little calculator games like this pip stands for personal information processor and notice how every meal is of course dominated by or accompanied by core Lucy is being interviewed by Leslie Uggams who is blind ow from Deadpool and Zach Cherry who's from you know well a lot of things including shangi I love that rather than telling her she's approved it's all delivered electronically through her pit boy this is another signal that there may be more at play here and we're going to get into it we're going to theorize then we get a title page for Lucy which we'll see for all our major players through the season they begin say up Lucy's wedding in the cornfield all the vaults are different they may have similar designs or sizes in the games but it looks like this in the series and Vault 33 is known for you know corn we also see an unlooted Charisma bobblehead and Lucy better snap that up Pronto that's some top tier loot right there as Lucy examines the wedding dress we can see the past dates of weddings that took place using this dress along with the names of the women who wore it and it's kind of hard to read but we've got something like K Smith of April 3rd 2272 and I think Ruth Cherry October 10th 2281 Wendy y Clark on July 26 6 2291 and Stephanie Harper March 17th 2294 and shout out to Stephanie for getting married on St Patty's Day that's a hard task to overcome this dress also you know to me seems kind of gross especially cuz Lucy leaves it on when she's banging so like everyone but Stephanie might be banging in this dress it's kind of like Sisterhood of the bang dress don't give me that dress next Lucy says this after 10 years of cousin stuff I'm definitely excited for the real thing and please someone tell me this isn't implying that Lucy's cousin is in love with her because they've been doing the nasty for years and just couldn't get married in the background you can see a pistol encased in glass later one of the Raiders manages to pop this open but this could be a reference to the lock cry lator in Vault 111 that you can use dog me to retrieve for you a projector projects the background for the suble level it says telesonic magic of 3D this was also featured in the trailer it also has an endless loop of film The overseer tells Lucy this go she look just like your mother that will come up again later in the episode from the last person Lucy expects to hear it from vaults 31 32 and 33 are able to make these trades because they're somehow connected there's no mention of other vault tech vaults being connected like this but vault tech runs social experiments on people living in them so I'm sure we'll find more about how they're messing with these people later on the group attacking the Vault are Raiders from the surface which Lucy knows the second she points her wrist Geer counter at her new hubby and it's in the danger zone given what her dad said about the surface and the people who live there it's safe to assume people who live in the vault are warned about Raiders from an early age they probably didn't realize some of them were so hunky though and that's important info to take in so mova also tells Lucy she looks just like her mom and you just know Lucy is like how the hell does this crazy woman know my mom mover also kidnaps Lucy's dad so there's some backstory here that we along with Lucy don't know yet but maybe it has something to do with these damn experiments so as Lucy's dad is the overseer for Vault 33 Vault 32 is overseer Lial dver the overseer is basically the leader of the Vault and Vault 32 is last overseer Jackson died allegedly to like starvation when blight hit our wheat we lost a lot of good people so it's well known that both parties need help recovering their resources wheat and semen or maybe I should just say a breeder so what's your sperm count Lucy's Dad starts a speech by saying how prosperous everyone's becoming how in no time will return to the surface and this false hope is always given in post-apocalyptic movies it reminds me how the captain and wle kept being like we're all fine and no our world was dead there was no hope for return if a jacked up robot didn't exist we'd all eat ourselves to death so this is the false hope I don't need it and clearly it leads to something bigger those Vault 32 people are looking ragged also look at how that lady just does not want to clap right now we should have known immediately something was up with them Some Enchanted Evening by the castel's plays and blind out offers the dance to the cousin lover because he's heartbroken Lucy takes Monty to their new home and outside of their home is a little mailbox this home looks exactly like the 76 room however there was no kitchen but even down to the drapes we have that very similar mid-century retro aesthetic design Monty takes off his jumpsuit to which Lucy replies okie dokie a response that a fictional 1950s housewife would say in a man's fantasy in this episode Lucy will go from obedient housewife to rebellious Revenge Seeker after disobeying the other demands from the men in this Vault Scatman CRS keep that coffee hot starts playing and Scatman famously got killed in The Shining so we should know something is a foot here luc's brother sneaks into Vault 32 whose wheat fields are dead and we knew they were bad off but Jesus Christ I think it's time to assume it wasn't a blight that killed those plants but a lack of care after the Raiders wiped out the Vault Lucy and Monty are post coidus and this sick reek wipes himself off on her curtains which I mean yeah Vault 3 was clearly ragged but that should have been such a red flag I mean Hello he's supposed to live there we're Vault dwellers not cavemen back to the brother he comes across the nursery with the dead body of an original member of Vault 32 and he now knows what's up back with Monty and Lucy If wiping himself off on the curtains wasn't enough he's acting like it's his first time seeing water in his entire life along with a lone scream this has Lucy pull out her pit boy and realize that Monty is in fact a Raider and he's full of radiation in the games your pit boy will go off like this when you go through a radiated areas you see it at the end of the episode they start fighting and it's rough as hell we also see a better look at the stove that says Atomic Queen stove and atomic shop is where you buy these brands in the game Lucy uses her stim pack these will quickly heal most wounds by boosting the body's natural regenerative properties so her being able to run around and [ __ ] up after being stabbed is very on brand for Fallout also the stim back is in your bathroom in just about the same place in Fallout 76 they raided the Armory and we see the nacac Cola bottle all the ammunition boxes open and random bullets just cast everywhere in the first Fallout game you started your character off with a knife and a pistol the knife Lucy uses is actually pretty similar looking to the F1 knife so it's very fitting that this is basically her starting equipment Zach Cherry character yells this get that jelly mold out of here and this dude is the king of showing up and stuff and spouting an amazing oneliner Okay Spiderman yo what up y'all it's your boy clev coming at you live on the bus then we get a pretty gruesome murder next to the nacola machine another item we see from the games honestly around this part we get some horrible fight scenes like my girl getting a fork in the eye the Raider inhales Jet and this is a chem from The Fallout Universe it's basically just meth and it's funny because in Fallout drugs always give some sort of benefit as well as a negative one so you do frequently end up taking drugs during fights to boost action points or whatever when the projector stops working we get walls of please stand by which also appears in the games we're then met by The Vault 32 leader and the remaining Vault 33 hostages and we get this little exchange I think I know who you are everyone knows who I am but do they know who they are they are the product of one of life's tricky little choices so clearly this is something very mysterious and this is where I warned you about the spoilers because this could be a pretty big spoiler for the show's future since I haven't really revealed it yet so if you don't want a big spoiler mute me for like 10 seconds and I'll flap around when you can come back this could give way to Vault 33 being an experiment so most of the vaults and Fallout were really some sort of psychological experiment and I think this one has something to do with genes and breeding maybe Vault 33 was all the members of One family and Vault 32 was members of another another family it's not normal to have two vaults right next to each other or to have them swap folks back and forth during arranged marriages for mating purposes so I think this has to be part of a major experiment the other interesting thing is whatever the experiment of Vault 33 was her father was probably in on it as most overseers have some idea of what their vault is truly about mova also says you look like your mother so she has some knowledge of what has been going on inside the Vault since Lucy's father had never seen her before this means she'd probably been watching them via cameras which sort of implies some scientific interest to me and I wonder if she could be a member or an ex-member of The Institute a faction of scientists and researchers they're the most like obvious choice for those who could continue to observe a vault experiment following the collapse of vault tech malova could also just easily be an ex-member or a member of The Enclave as vault tech set up the vaults in conjunction with The Enclave to test Humanity okay you can come back I'm done with my theory that could spoil a lot of things when mover mentions the line about Lucy's mother though it could technically be literal as in she looks exactly like her mom in the Fallout Universe there are such things as clones and LifeLink synth replic because of people so Lucy could be a clone or like a synth of her mom or what would be her mom this setup right here reminds me of several Fallout games and Fallout 4 you're locked in a cryopod while your spouse is killed and your baby is stolen and in Fallout 3 your father leaves the Vault and you go on a quest to find him so this sort of like combining those two things together malova offers the hostage Vault dwellers of 33 to run and hide like they're known to do so we're already seeing that like snippet of animosity people have for Vault dwellers these are literal Raiders from the surface they broke into Vault 32 and in the trailer and old lady was stunned to see Lucy an actual Vault dweller calling her a [ __ ] and then assuming they were all dead so it's clear that no one really likes or cares for the vault dwellers and I mean who would in a post nuke world where some suffer from radiation above and others get to survive and thrive below I'd be jealous I'd be pissed we come from a black screen to a man getting jumped which okay calm down Johnny Cash is so dog on Lonesome plays and the title screen for Maximus pops up like Lucy did for her name later we see their flag and this is the Brotherhood of Steel which secures the Wasteland the Brotherhood of Steel is a group of soldiers originally spun out of the US military by this point they're different factions and I assume this is the West Coast faction so they're more intense and dogmatic while some of the East Coast members are more focused on protecting civilians versus preserving technology however the flag here differs slightly from the one you might have seen in Fallout 4 and 76 this red and white flag is featured in bethesda's merge site as the first flag for the Brotherhood of Steel however appearing in Fallout 3 its first known use was in 2277 these people are currently training to be Squires as we see later those chosen will be promoted to a squire for a night like a caddy to a golfer later during the interrogation scene cleric quintes calls them aspirin which might be what they're referred to now before their Squires we see a wide shot of the compound and at the bottom right you can see a poster that says enlist this like many posters in the show are from the original games the t60 power armor drops in it was invented during the Sino American War by America which helped them turn the war in our favor the t60 armor is from the most recent Fallout games Fallout 4 and 76 Dan and Maximus find their way looking at the stored t60 armor when Maximus gets a flashback of young him being saved by a knight which we will get into later all over again by Johnny Cash plays also I think this could be a very cute reference to the Fallout game physics because in Fallout you can pick up and throw stuff and there are basketball hoops all around in the universe so you can run around throwing stuff into basketball hoops but you can't dribble in the game so this is basically them playing basketball in real life but like how you could play it in the game and I think that's a really cute little notot it's revealed that danne has been promoted to a squire leaving Maximus pretty salty they say that they're going into the wilds and then the next day danne sabotage and everyone says that it's Maximus who did we're then back with Lucy now in her bedroom picture covered in blood changes from good night to good morning this is actually in your bedroom in Fallout 76 as well this kind of feels like a metaphor for a new day like a New Horizon just like the picture everyone's moving upward from the events of last night with not a lot of remorse I like how they take down the blood soak the outside world can never hurt you poster and just put up a new one without blood on it they're leading the dead bodies to the compost which makes sense and during this time Brighter Side by Connie Conway plays so even in the soundtrack we're looking to the brighter side of things Lucy Staples her wound shut and God I hated it and then she just jumps back into The Fray later she proposes to go out and search for her dad and everyone says absolutely not to which her brother challenges it's because none of them could be in charge aka the new Overseer for 33 we're seeing how internally no matter how cordial everyone is the hierarchy system and us being humans can still create hostile environments where we strive for leadership and ownership even during a postnuclear holocaust we'll see throughout the show how people on the surface Vault dwellers and even the Brotherhood of Steel all exist in this world and it's not really pretty Chad helps Lucy to the elevator using his pit boy this leads them to the Vault entrance Lucy only knows what she learned through the school in her Vault so understandably Chad is very nervous for her there were a lot of bodies outside of the shelter when she leaves and as we saw in the opening of Fallout 4 there were a lot of people that wanted to get into the shelters than were admitted so it looks like something similar happened here like in the game if you start as a vault dweller you exit the vault in your Vault dweller suit like Lucy is's doing here which I assume will be updated or maybe she'll find better clothes later when she steps out you can hear the same radiation monitor that I mentioned earlier the pit boy that alerts her that she's in like a radiation Zone which of course all of outside is in radiation Zone we can see the broken debris of Santa Monica Pier sign and how tragic all the old toys and structures then it's revealed where at what once was the Santa Monica Pier overlooking the Pacific Ocean oh and it's barely standing though the ferris wheel is still there and you know thank God we still have the Santa Monica Ferris wheel we saw this nippet actually in the trailer that was released a month ago all of this destruction means all the hotels all the homes around Santa Monica are now broken and just destroyed lifeless remains and memories of what once was they even got the Santa Monica bubble gum shrimp and God damn it that's the best bubble gum shrimp I feel like just the smell of the ocean makes the bubblegum shrimp feel like it's actual shrimp Bubblegum Shrimp please don't come for me I like you a universal too back with Maximus he's being questioned by Elder cleric quintus we learned in this interrogation that Maximus has joined the Brotherhood to hurt those who hurt him young Maximus was also hidden inside a little fridge like Indiana Jones Maximus apologizes and gravels to claric quintis saying he's willing to lose his own life for the Brotherhood to which Quinta says good boy then is promoted to Squire for Knight Titus and I'm always always skeptical about things like this cuz we don't know who hurt young Maximus it could have easily been the Brotherhood of Steel and what we're seeing here is actually him infiltrating and taking them out from the inside these are things from the first episode that are still up for debate and questioning that give these characters some really fun story Arts at one point he says this if I can help the Brotherhood make it better Eden or whatever Maximus may be referencing the G or Garden of Eden creation kit these were supposedly given to every Vault and were terraforming kits to help Vault dwellers rebuild once they emerge From the Vault so Maximus may be speaking metaphorically here or perhaps the Brotherhood is looking for again the initiation to be promoted to a squire includes all of your peers you accepting your terms and conditions then your knight Burns you with their metal hand which left Maximus with a t which I assume is for Titus cuz he's Knight Titus their newest Mission comes from the highest clerics of the Commonwealth According to quintis which is mostly around Boston it's a large portion of what was Massachusetts their target is the enclave denisen and their companion who I assume is dog meat they escaped and they have an important object with them there's a lot of possibilities here about what that object could be like a new strain of the FED virus or a nuclear weapon in the Fallout games you can travel with a companion often a dog named dog me and they're a good boy and the fev virus is partially responsible for the super mes we're now at a new location with a tall Fortress like wall with torches lining the edges like a castle and a man is killed by by a junk jet which is a weapon that can shoot a variety of ammo like a desk fan or I suppose a baby doll arm here we meet honcho played here by Michael T Williams and best known for his role as Bubba and Forest Gump and someone please tell this man that his store is completely gone in Santa Monica I will never give up on bubba gum shroom you can never make me hate bubble gum Shri we're then introduced to Walton goggin's new character the ghoul they're scared though he might be a feral ghoul which exists in the games they're ghouls that are simply just you know feral they're like zombies transformed from the radiation however there are some ghouls that still have their minds like Walton gogin they have extended lifespans are immune to most radiation seen as they're like you know full of and Walton gogin is so good here that I'm almost too attracted to him which is honestly not surprising because I'm also attracted to CAD Bane so it's probably because he's a fictional Bounty Hunter it's not because they both have weird skin after disclosing they after a man who escaped the enclave and is headed to malova in California the female Raider who attacked Vault 33 he turns on the group never really being you know fully invested or involved anyways and says this whenever somebody says they doing one last job that usually means their heart's not in it but for me well I do this [ __ ] for the Love of the Game and I'm sorry but nothing in the world is smoother than that line right there he then makes that dude's head explode and that does tend to happen in the games especially when getting head shot through bats then we get the title page for the ghoul just like Lucy and Maximus and you got to love it the guru prizes his line us cow pokes we take it as it comes and luckily the chicken survives we close to the credits and the song is Sheldon Almond's crawl out of the Fallout we get this heavily yellow Sky light beaming from the Sun as this man reads a newspaper this is the capital post a pre-war newspaper from the games then the sun erupts into a ball of green light conveying the nuke explosion the ripple from the nuke melts and deteriorates everything in sight leaving the man's skeleton sitting on the bench when you zoom out more the sun returns and we see the broken debris of the ferris wheel even a family in the middle of leaving the ferris wheel now just skeletons skeletons sitting in the little cart and I love this credit sequence we see like boats capsized the instant death of the world in just like seconds we see a sign for secure your place now with people lined up to enter a vault it's not really mentioned in this episode from the trailer we know that you could purchase a residence in a vault and some people actually did the world knew we could end at any moment and some folks took action and that's it for the first episode the second episode of Fallout starts by giving us a glimpse into the Enclave compound The Enclave like I mentioned in the first episode breakdown is a secretive group that originally comprised of high-ranking members of the United States government they appeared as antagonist in Fallout 2 where they were essentially planning on infecting and killing everyone in the Wasteland so they could rebuild America as they wanted they also appeared in Fallout 3 and to the lesser extent New Vegas by which point their numbers seem to have dwindled drastically however this compound at least seems to be doing rather well so clearly The Enclave is larger than we previously new and the song currently playing is into each life some Rain Must Fall by The Ink Spots the scientists here seem to be running some sort of behavioral control experiments using dogs given their goals in the past I wonder if the Enclave has graduated from trying to murder everyone in the Wasteland to trying to mind control them instead this is the type of dog frequently seen in the Fallout game as a potential companion to the player character is also a reference to Mad Max who had a similar dog back when he was played by Mel Gibson the scientist named will zig injects himself with a tiny glowing Speck he is then forced to go on the run after the dog tears out another scientist's throat and it's a rough [ __ ] scene back in what is left of Santa Monica Lucy wanders upon the resting remains of an assaultron robot these versus appeared in Fallout 4 and were created by robco Industries and sold to the US military before the nuclear apocalypse she also finds a skeletal remains of a family around a dinner table and in the Fallout game skeletons are frequently used to tell little stories such as skeleton Spate over a toilet these are common in the game and just like so common it spawned a meme called environmental storytelling skeletons it seems this family here drank vault tech Plan D and cono savings package poison as the bombs fell there's something so horrible and Eerie about vault tech building vaults to exploit people than selling poison to people who didn't get a place in their vaults it's I don't know it's just of course capitalism is like come to this Lucy goes to sleep for the night and is woken up by Wiig he questions whether she has what it takes to survives in the Wasteland saying this then you will have to adapt the question is will you still want the same things when you have become a different animal altogether this is foreshadowing not only Lucy's character Arc from Noob to experience badass but also the ending of the series when Lucy discovers she doesn't really want to go back to Vault 33 with her father wiig's dog also kills the hell out of this rad roach which is a giant roach that mutated following the nuclear blast and you see them in the games following up on Maximus he's traveling via Verte bir and that you can see The Enclave or the Brotherhood used in the games when his night Titus says this of course shoot something and I love little moments like this because once again this is a feeling every Fallout player can relate to no matter how important or pressing your main quest is you can't help but run off and fight some local Raiders that's just the Wasteland baby that's all you got to do walk away and play something else also Maximus bumps his head as he entites Propel down from the Verte bird this starts a running theme in the show as Maximus gets hit in the head like 12 more times and I'll try to point out every time it happens wizig takes a break to eat some cram which we've seen in the games before when his dog comes back with a human hand this might be referencing the in-game mechanic of dog meat being able to fetch items for you in Fallout 4 Maximus and Titus end up at the same clearing but Wilzig has already left instead they are attacked by the yaay a giant mutated American black bear which is also in the games Titus instantly books it out of there and it's repeating oh [ __ ] oh [ __ ] F oh [ __ ] and this sounds like someone live streaming the video game Maximus kills the yay with a double tap from what looks like the original 10 mm pistol from the first Fallout game and you can tell by the revolver cylinder also Maximus must have gotten incredibly lucky because I don't think you can twoot a yuai in the games like that but that being said given how maximus' life plays out it really does seem like he has a high luck score Titus is left dying after the aguai attack and Maximus is faced with a decision that feels very similar to the moral quandries that appear in the Fallout video games in this point his choices are should I let Titus bleed to death so I can con seals armor or do I give him a stem pack to earn favor with the Brotherhood and another cool nod to the games the HUD display inside the power armor is the same as the one from Fallout 4 also these in helmet shots look exactly like Iron Man's did in the MCU our main characters all cross paths in the town of Philly and we get a ton of cool references here first off we see the man sell an iguana meat which is a common food item in the Fallout games as Lu see approaches a small tunnel we see a Giddy Up Buttercup horse toy amongst the garbage these are notable because they might actually be at the center of an alien conspiracy as over 100 of these were found on an alien spacecraft in Fallout 3 one of which was surrounded by several mutilated bodies it's been theorized they're an alien invention designed to infiltrate human homes and spy on us or attack us listen then walks past a Brahman one of the two headed mutated cows from the games before seeing a pit boy 2000 in a store window and this is the same model from Fallout 76 then there's another bobblehead in the window this looks like it's standing in the same pose as the intelligence bobblehead but it's missing the graduation cap and glasses as W EG and Lucy run into each other and in the background behind them is a sign with an outline of a laser rifle saying you steal we shoot Wilzig also reveals he knows a lot about Vault 33 including that it's a meritocracy where people value doing the right thing it's never really explained how Wilzig knows this but it does point to The Enclave perhaps being more involved with the construction of the vaults in this series than we thought then the ghoul approaches saying Wiig has had a bounty put on his head by all six agencies there's a lot of mercenary outfits in the Fallout world and I'm assuming among these six may be the talent company The Regulators and little horn and Associates the ghoul quickly blows off Wi zig's leg the gun he's using seems to be unique to the show but given how quickly he targeted his specific part of wiig's body it really made it feel like he was using one of those vat systems which in the modern games lets the player slow down time and target specific areas of the body during the uing chaos Lucy finds another bobble head this one seems to be the same model that included the collector's edition of Fallout 3 we also see a gray tortoise and a big boss cigarettes both are real in-game items and the ladder is actually a reference to Metal Gear Solid so in the TV show we get an onscreen reference to an in-game item from one video game that is referencing a character from a separate video game Inception inside the shop we also see a junk on the wall we saw one of these in the last episode with the goons that tried to kill the ghoul Lu tries to use her speech skills to deescalate a fight but it seems like her levels were just not high enough as the ghoul is about to start shooting again before he's interrupted by Maximus Lucy and wisy Escape past the snake oil salesman advertising serums for pain upon seeing wiig's injury he changes it to foot healing serums and I genuinely love this character but I don't like that he bangs chickens he's a funny guy I cross the line of banging chickens out in the desert Wilzig eats one of the vault tech play and de poison pills once he realizes he won't be able to make the journey himself he says that despite the pills being a solid product he was surprised they weren't more popular he also calls Lucy by her last name before he dies wiig's background is never really explained in the show but I think we can piece it together based on these Clues we know that he's familiar with Vault 33 and the mlan family and he has knowledge of vault tech sale figures he has some sort of relationship with malova and he was also able to replicate the cold fusion technology to me this points strongly to the likelihood that wi Zig was born before the nuclear bombs dropped in 20177 later in the show we learned there was a contingent of Vault Tech Middle managers cryogenically frozen in Vault 31 and I think it's like likely Wilzig was either in one of those cryopods or Frozen in a similar pod elsewhere in later episodes it revealed that mov invented C Fusion technology before 2077 and her companies were later bought out by vault tech so I think Wiig worked at one of those companies with Maldova explained both their relationships and his ability to replicate her experiments then transitioned over to vault tech following the buyouts of mover's companies explaining his knowledge of their sales figures and his familiarity with Vault 33 and Lucy's family where he was able to secure being cryogenically frozen into the current year of 2296 before he dies he tells Lucy she needs to bring his head to malova and he offers her a ripper with which to do the deed the episode ends with Lucy cutting off Wi zig's head after saying her catchphrase okie dokie despite being in a very strange circumstance Lucy's always willing to jump right in and get the job done and I really appreciate that about the character and that's why I love her so much the end credits for the show show was a crash vertebr and several dead Brotherhood of Steel Knight at what looks to be a ruined airport episode 3 starts with the title card the beginning this shows us the earliest point so far in the timeline for Fallout we'll see in the show Cooper Howard is on set filming a scene for the man from Dead Horse he's wearing the same outfit for the birthday party in the first episode and I think that's the same horse this scene where he tells the bad guy this will be referenced numerous times throughout the show despite Howard objecting to the violence of this Scene It goes on to be one of the most recognized on screen moments after filming he meets his wife Barb Howard and their daughter Janie Barb gives him a box carrying a new costume for the vault tech promo he's about to model for saying they even made it in your color just like everyone else is back in the year 2296 Cooper now in the ghoul form discovers WI zig's head we didn't mention it last episode But the spot wizig died at was actually a crash USSR satellite in the Fallout Universe the Soviet Union never collapsed and remained a communist Nation until the end of the war and I'm guessing this satellite was maybe spying on the US and was either shot down or crashed down following the nuclear detonations behind the satellite we can see a dome structure in the background I believe this is the same Airport Building we saw on the closing credits for the last episode The Ghoul inhal some chems after coughing it's never really explained what that substance is but we do know it keeps the ghouls from going feral given the their condition is brought on by radiation this could be rataway but in the games at least it's never really mentioned that rataway will help the ghouls stay not being feral also there's a shot of famous ry's Donuts now in Ruins this makes sense geographically given that ry's Donuts is right near like LAX and the Dome structure behind the ghouls at the airport as Lucy wanders the Wasteland we hear Maybe by The Ink Spots the song appeared in the credits of the original Fallout game and in the in-game radios for most of the modern games she takes a break from wandering to eat yum yum deviled eggs another fuit item from the game back in Philly Maximus is working to repair his power armor the Brotherhood calls night Titus on the radio while Maximus successfully imitates the Knight he fully messes up the following speech check once he's told he'll be set another Squire and freaks out ripping the radio out of his armor he's forced to sell a tooth for caps to get his armor fixed which the repair lady does in a single touch with her tool this might be a cheeky reference to how repairing your armor and Fallout is just a single button press that happens instantly I don't know but it would be funny if it was also in the pile of trash below Maximus there appears to be either the body of a synth or mannequin since are artificial humanoid robots introducing Fallout 4 while mannequins are frequently used to set dressing throughout the games one of the Charming aspects of the Fallout universe is how things are named for instance the town Novak in New Vegas got his name from the burn out No Vacancy sign at the hotel and I think given how much garbage is thrown around this place the town of Philly used to just be a landfill Maximus is jumped by a group of Raiders which happens a lot to him in the show he's getting jumped a lot one of which is wielding a power fist so he can punch extra good Maximus takes several blows to the Head from that power fist back in La Lucy walks past a car with a faded Sunset SAR spella logo a classic Fallout brand from Fallout New Vegas it was an effective healing item in the game she's still following her pit boy map which is very similar to the one scen in Fallout 4 at the top of the tabs a stats inventory data map and radio she also passes a street sign for Hollywood Boulevard in last episode she cut off wiig's head near ry's Donuts which means she's only about 4 and a half hour walk from where she ended last episode Lucy gets attacked by a gulper which looks like a mutated Axel a guler's appeared in Fallout 4 and wiig's head is now stolen by this one while looking for it she approaches the water and the rad meter on her pit boy starts ticking like crazy in the game games most every body of water was radioactive so the closer you get to water the more dangerous the radiation levels become lul gets to jump on Lucy and uses her as bait by dunking her in the river so he can lure the gulper back and retrieve the head they ultimately fail and the ghoul's collection of juices gets damaged in the process Lucy mentions the golden rule of do unto others as they would do unto you then we get perhaps the most Metaline of the show as the ghoul drags Lucy away from the river he tells her the golden rule of the Wasteland now sh get sidetracked by [ __ ] every goddamn time this line has already blown up online because of how relatable it is any Fallout fan will tell you how easy it is to lose track of the main quest line by you know well just getting sidetracked by random [ __ ] it's kind of the point of the games if you ask me Maximus impersonating Titus means his new Squire Thaddius thadius was one of the people who beat up Maximus during his introduction in the first episode however we learned that Theus only started beating on Maximus so people would stop beating on him calling it The Law of the Wasteland I call it the laws of being a [ __ ] this almost acts as the Thematic rebuttal to Lucy's Golden Rule dadus is doing unto others as was done unto him and perhaps this is why the Golden Rule fails because a single incitement opens the door to further retaliation which leads to a cycle of violence the golden rule only works of humanity is already perfect which it clearly is not right now as we see throughout the show thus is exactly right the Wasteland is filled with individuals who are so scared of being hurt that they preemptively lash out first leading to a vicious cycle of violence and paranoia that feeds into itself the only real solution is civilization but most every attempt to civilization in the Fallout Universe eventually fails or only succeeds because they're dominated by all other threats in the area this is the philosophy of Fallout at its simpl that within Humanity are the seeds of our own destruction this is reinforced again when we return to Vault 33 this episode The Vault dwellers are trying to figure out what to do with the Raiders they captured following the assault of their vault in episode one Norm Lucy's brother advocates for doing what they did unto us I.E you know kill them Norm is refuted In This Moment by the other Vault dwellers who advocate for a more civilized approach again pointing to civilization being the only real cure for widespread societal violence we also learned that the water chip in VA 33 was destroyed and they will run out of water in about 2 months these events heavily parallel the first Fallout game where the water chip failing was the inciting incident for the player character to leave vault 13 and explore the Wasteland in search of a new water chip Maximus andthus track down the gulper and it attacks you may notice the gulper looks a little different than it did in Fallout 4 complete with human fingers in its mouth this actually gets explained later on having the result of genetic testing in Vault 4 thus and Maximus are able to take the creature down with thus using what appears to be an assault rifle from Fallout 4 modded with an extended clip when the goldber dies it spits out wi zig's head Lucy shoe and also a pink lawn Flamingo these la flamingos were items in Fallout 76 and appear later in the show in one of the vaults later we learned that this creature was being made as an experiment Vault for eating everything in sight and this Flamingo probably came from Vault 4 as they walk through the ruins of Crest Studios Lucy's rad made her start spiking following her submersion into the river she became very irradiated also this radiation readout looks very similar to one you might find in the game the episode ends with a flashback to Cooper shooting his first promotional material as a vault boy at Crest Studios as he exit the trailer two actors dressed in Roman costumes walk past this could be a sneaky reference to CES Legion a violent and imperialistic faction of slavers that fights for power in the Wasteland Mojave region and models their outfits and armor after ancient Rome while shooting the commercial Cooper gives the iconic Vault boy thumbs up the credit sequence show a billboard of the animated Vault boy plastered over a more realistic depiction of Cooper and we know at some point Cooper falls out of favor in Hollywood so I'm guessing after that happened vault tech replaced all his ads with the animated Vault boy mascot that would never develop problematic political opinions there's also a billboard from Mr handy which alludes to the threat we'll see next episode episode four starts with Lucy and the ghoul walking down what remains of Hollywood Walk of Fame they stopped to talk to a ghoul friend of Coopers named Roger who was in the process of turning feral Cooper and Roger reminisce about their favorite foods with Roger remembering blamco mac and cheese a familiar brand from the games Cooper shoots Roger in the head and proceeds to cannibalize him cannibals a recurring theme in the Fallout games with the modern entries even letting you partake yourself at the low cost of all the civilization being incredibly sketched out by you we also get the first hint that Cooper is familiar with the mlan family as he pauses when he hears the name Lucy likewise is very sketched out by Cooper's cannibalism saying that when Vault 33 died due to famine her father never became a cannibal Cooper laughed at this saying this as what people say they did and what they really did this foreshadow is what we learned about Hank later on mainly that he's a mass murdering psychopath Lucy and Cooper stumbl upon a massive crater likely the location where one of the bombs dropped at this point we should talk about some of the finer points of the Fallout Lord in previous games the ruins of Los Angeles were called the Boneyard and had rebounded somewhat to become an active settlement as late as 2281 during the events of Fallout New Vegas the Boneyard was a member of the new California Republic there's no reference to the Boneyard or any populated settlements in La apart from the Griffith Observatory during this show given the size though of La it's possible the show just doesn't take place near the populated portions of the city or we'll see later on it's possible that NCR has fled the territory completely and perhaps the residents of the Boneyard also left or were killed following this Lucy tries to escape the ghoul biting his finger off in the process he recaptures her and cuts her finger off in return calling it an honest exchange this furthers the theme of The Golden Rule introduced last episode as the ghoul does back to Lucy what she did to him get it away take it away throw it out the ghoul takes Lucy to a super duper Mar where he Bargains to exchange her for supplies for the anti- ghoul serum super duper Mar like nearly all the brands in this show is from the games and I think it first appeared in Fallout 3 and another one appeared in four The Branding we see here is taken directly from Fallout 4 though inside the super duper Mart Lucy meets a Mr handy bot these were multi-purpose robots created by robco Industries and have appeared in many of the Fallout games while Al programmed to be helpful to humanity there have been cases of Mr handy you know going a little crazy like this one does this episode in Fallout 3 there is a Mr handy named Mr Andy bot that worked inside Vault 101 over the years it had deteriorated and once appointed The Vault doctor and M took a spraying toe on the foot for a lethal injury and amputated her leg so given how long this Mr handy has been hanging around because he specifically references the fact that he has lost track of time he's liable to exhibit some weird Tendencies and case in point after sewing a new finger onto Lucy's hand this robot attemp to harvest her organs back in Vault 33 Chad Lucy's cousin hooks up with Steph and helps her deliver her baby elsewhere Norm looks into the communication logs for Vault 33 in the game players often learn about the vaults by hacking into their computers and reading old Communications so this is very on point also the interface in general sounds the computer makes are all very similar to what you get from the actual modern titles Norm recruits chat to help him explore Vault 32 where they discover a ton of dead bodies and evidence of a riot there's even a blood splattered vault tech foosball table I seen in Fallout 76 minus the blood of course if you look closely the Foosball players are m it after the ball boys cute minus the blood Norm finds more environmental storytelling skeletons including one who committed suicide by jamming a fork into a toaster before he died in the second episode night Titus gave a rambling monologue about the pointlessness of being a Brotherhood steel of night as often they are sent onto missions or retrieve pre-war Tech that ends up just being a toaster also for anyone who doesn't know yes sticking a fork in a toaster can be extremely dangerous and you should not do it I shouldn't have to be your mom's don't put a freaking fork in a toaster they also come across a TV program about a scientific study about a city of mice that end up fighting due to overpopulation and this is referencing a series of very real psychological studies conducted on rodents they are given all food that they could want and their population exploded before violence and antisocial behaviors took place and they all died out it's actually pretty Grim but I'm bringing it up because this is all referenced again at the end of the show back in the super duper Mart Lucy is able to prevent her Argin from being harvested also I just want to shout out that the pipe wrench on the table of the medical equipment that's hardcore she fills Mr Handy's syringes with a brao cleaner a common in-game crafting item and threads the humans in the facility to release her and a bunch of the captive ghouls they have locked up unfortunately some of the ghouls have already gone feral and Lucy is forced to shoot one of them with the iconic 10 mm pistol these guns are in basically every Fallout game and I was waiting for one of these bad boys to show up there's also a blood pack on the desk which is a healing item in some of the modern types Lucy emerges from the super duper Mart in her new drip she's got a leather strap thrown over one of her shoulders which was reference to the look of the Vault dweller in the ending cinematic of Fallout 1 where the player is wearing a very similar leather strap to the one Lucy has here Cooper investigates the empty Mark finding an old video of the film The Man from Dead Horse and we see him watch the scene where he was shooting last episode in Vault 32 as Norman ched go deeper into the facility they pass a group of bodies hung from the ceiling on each of these bodies we can see their Pit Boys are blinking on what appears to be the status screen so in the Fallout games your specific limbs can take damage and as they become damaged the status screen changes to reflect that here it looks like they're repeating every Limb and part of the body is being crippled so these Pit Boys are basically saying uh I know this is weird but I think every part of your body has failed and using these computers Norm learns that the Raiders access the vaults using his Dead Mother's pit boy in the closing credits of this episode we see the drive-in theater drive-ins have appeared in both New Vegas and Fallout 4 but this appears to be a different location there's also a protectron billboard and the entrance to a vault and I'm guessing this is Vault 4 which we visit next episode but this entrance is surrounded by columns from a highway which we don't see episode five titled the past Maximus and Theus are celebrating finding the head when Maximus Reveals His real identity to Theus Theus freaks out and pulls the fusion core out of the power armor this Fusion core looks exactly like the one scene in Fallout 4 and it serves a similar purpose of powering your armor however in that game your armor was constantly draining the battery but we don't really see the battery life be a problem for Maximus so maybe this Fusion core has a little extra juice in Maximus is stuck in his armor and starts raving about how he's about to die he sounds a lot like Titus did right before Maximus let him die and I think it's kind of poetic that this man has come like full circle Maximus of course doesn't die Lucy stumbles upon Him killing the rad roaches that were crawling all over his power suit and I hated this this scene nothing I hate more than a giant bug at this point Lucy's not messing around look at how she just like Stomps the crap out of each of these roaches I could never do that and she's definitely gained a few levels on her playthrough Lucy throws up in front of Maximus prompting him to say that she has radiation sickness this LLY came from last episode when she was dunked and drank some radiation water in the games as your radiation increases it decreases things like your health or special abilities the best cure for it is rataway which is what Maximus offers her then she helps him out of the armor before collapsing back in the vaults Norman Chet sneak into Vault 33 and asked where they've been to which they reply planting tatoes potatoes were a food item in Fallout 4 76 and are a cross between a potato and a tomato Lucy wakes up having being revived by Maximus he tells Lucy he heard that only monsters lived in the vault this could be foreshadowing the ending when we learned that vault tech managers have been cryogenically frozen in Vault 31 however given that Maximus grew up in California he could have heard stories about how the other vaults and the other areas that really did contain actual monsters for instance Vault 12 in Bakersfield was a vault whose entire population was turned into ghouls he could have also heard the legends about Vault 4 which we see later is home to genetically modified humans who look a lot like Monsters no offense to the nose guy using her speech skills Lucy convinces Maximus to join her she has acquired her first real companion and she asked him for a quick rundown for the last 200 years after the bomb fell Maximus retorts that the bombs fell when he was a kid while this sounds weird to anyone who knows the Fallout timeline we later learn that Maximus lived in a town called Shady Sands which has a long history in the Fallout games a bomb dropped on Shady sand sometime after 2281 when Maximus was a child so this is what what he's referring to then Lucy tells Maximus about her childhood saying that up until she was sick she thought the big light over the vault's farm was the Sun and her mom took her out to play in the fields under it she doesn't know it yet but in that last episode of the show it's revealed that Lucy and Norm were actually taken out of Vault 33 when her mother ran away they lived in Shady Sams for a time until Hank came to retrieve them when her mother said she didn't want to go back to Vault 33 Hank Dropped a Bomb on the town and took his kids back to the Vault so these two stories Maximus and Lucy are telling are actually stories of the same place around the same time they just don't know it yet and I love them I hope they stay together forever on a vault 33 computer Norm learns that every overseer of Vault 33 came from Vault 31 including his father Hank and Betty who has just been elected as the new Overseer we later learned that Vault 33 and 32 are actually being used to breed a class of super managers who are overseen by vault tech employees Frozen in Vault 31 we later hear the slogan when things look glum vote for somebody from Vault 31 so their culture is basically shaping them to follow the orders of people from that Vault ched explains this away by saying by all accounts Vault 31 has better resources better education systems and again we know that Vault 31 is just cryogenic Frozen pods for vault tech employees so they must have all been trained to promote this lie that the life is better there sick and twisted sick and twisted in fact being bred as a race of middle managers perfectly explains Lucy's behavior in the next scene out in the Wasteland Lucy and Maximus encounter a pair of strangers as both parties are trying to cross a bridge both groups claim to be on armed but Lucy knows Maximus is lying and Maximus says the other group is also lying as tensions arise Lucy tries to calm down everyone saying why don't we all take a deep breath she sounds exactly like someone who has gone through a corporate class on conflict resolution anyways Maximus shoots the other two after they attack them explaining to Lucy that they are fiends who are people who eat people now there is a group of drug addicted Raiders in Fallout New Vegas called fiends and they weren't necessarily cannibals but they are quite a lot of cannibals in the Fallout universe so this certainly isn't out of place Lucy and Maximus find a billboard for shady Sands the original capital of the NCR the NCR stands for New California Republic following the nuclear apocalypse the NCR was the largest and most successful attempt that new civilized government they were a major part of Fallout New Vegas and were very active in California area in the year 2281 when that game took place we haven't seen much mention of them yet and as we soon learn the NCR have likely fled the region Shady Sands was a location in the original Fallout game and has been mentioned in many of the Titles since its location here in the middle of La is a bit of a reccon from the original games where it looked like the city was somewhere in Death Valley Lucy is shocked to learn that 34,000 people used to live in Shady Sands as the Dwellers of Vault 33 were told that they would be the ones to restart civilization in the Wasteland this day she says was going going to be called Reclamation day we've seen Reclamation day in Fallout 76 that game starts with Reclamation day of the Appalachian vault which took place in 2102 it's interesting that Vault 33 was meant to last a lot longer than Vault 76 but this is actually explained later in the series as the man behind it is also obsessed with time maximus shows Lucy the sight of the bomb that fell on Shady Sands and Lucy asked what happened and we get this amazing line it's the same thing that always happens everyone wants to save the world they just they disagree on how this very neatly summarizes a lot of what we see in the Fallout games which is factions of people with philosophies that bring them into conflict with each other Lucy and Maximus move onto a nearby hawthor medical lab because Maximus was shot by one of the fiends they enter the facility and end up falling into the Vault below back in Vault 32 Betty leads the members of 33 through the Vault it's been cleaned up and all the bodies and signs of rioting that Norman Chet saw is nowhere to be found as the Vault ders explore the new home we see the pink flamingo the same type that the gulper threw up earlier interestingly though despite everything that had been cleaned up the overseers computer Compu is now damaged but when Norm and Chad were here last episode it was working fine episode 6 the Trap starts with the opening title sequence for Galaxy news Galaxy news is actually the first thing you see in the opening of the first Fallout game it was the prover News Channel and in Fallout 3 Galaxy news radio is still running but has been repurposed by a man named Three Dog and would report on things going around DC and the players actions as well the broadcast features Cooper Howard giving a tour a vault 4 he walks past a door named test subjects which is the same room Lucy and Maximus will end up in 200 odd years later the broadcast also contains the Hawthorns a family that will be staying in Vault 4 for a test run on the facility this is the family that the medical facility last episode was named after and given that it leads straight to the vaults we can assume that the Hawthorns were very involved with the vault tech in the creation of this Vault there's a phone number displayed right here and I called this number and the answering machine recording is just a man screaming given what we see later of Vault 4 I'm thinking those screams are coming from what happened after the experiments went South and all the scientists were being eaten also if you want to call the number go ahead you could just take my number down I'll scream in your ear if you want Cooper is then introduced to Bud Askins the vault tech man overseeing the Southern California operations he says he used to work for West Tech a defense contractor in the games they were the inventors of the power armor and the same is true here they also created the fev a virus that I mentioned earlier in the first episode breakdown but is the ultimate Mastermind behind vaults 31 32 and 33's Joint experiment as he says here he's more focused on HR and R&D now HR meaning human resources and R&D meaning research and development for those who don't know when you think about it the vaults are sort of a combination of HR and R&D so like it's kind of pretty accurate we get some hints that there is more to Bud than he lets on as he says this because what is the Ultimate Weapon to destroy your competition it's not out selling them it's not outsmarting them it's time H time is the Ultimate Weapon this is lampshading his plan to freeze himself and like-minded Vault teeken managers in Vault 31 while Vault 32 and 33 develop into perfect managers for the members of Vault 31 to oversee when they awake in the future during the rap party for the commercial we see a newspaper saying n walks back new nukea this is of course a reference to the new Coke product there's also a capital Post newspaper that says Red's losing territory more troops deployed to the Far East Capital post had an office in DC that could be visited in Fallout 4 outside the party Matt Barry cameos is Bartholomew codsworth the voice of Mr handy cworth is also the name of a Mr handy companion in Fallout 4 he tells Cooper this the future my friend is products you're a product I'm a product the end of the world is a product this actually ends up being spot on in the final episode we learned that vault tech is willing to start the nuclear apocalypse so the company can Outlast their competition and essentially rule the world the idea was really pitched to other CEOs the same way a product or business venture would be at the super duper Mark the ghoul is captured by a group of men that look a little similar to the NCR troops more sheriffy though they claim to work for the government with an I just in case you're confused which turns out to be a man who claims to be the president inol four the doctors pull a tooth out of maximus's shoulder this was the bullet that the fiend shot him in last episode the fact that teeth can be used as ammunation might explain how Maximus was so easily able to like sell his tooth and Phillies probably just used to be a bullet later on Lucy and Maximus are introduced to birdie a member of Vault 4 who used to live on the surface she says her mother was a courier couriers were a big part of the New Vegas plot as the main character was a courier in the game we learned that a lot of other couriers were actually just spies for a faction called Caesar's Legion Lucy and Maximus are made to stay in the room so the people of all four are sure that they radiation fee and we see that this is the same room labeled test subjects that we saw in the ad at the start of the episode this whole section is really funny because all four made to seem off-putting and cultish but it's revealed they're actually all just like really nice people trying to help each other recover from the genetic tampering of the original scientists who ran this Vault we're also introduced to Benjamin the overseer of Vault four played by our favorite man Chris Parnell from SNL RI and Morty Archer you know everything in the flashbacks Cooper fantasized about moving to a ranch outside of Bakersfield Bakersfield was not spared from the nuclear fallout and was a location in the first game a vault there was actually designed to test the effects of radiation and the door was programmed not to close the surviving members of Vault 12 and Bakersfield were all turned into Ghouls and founded as a city called necropolis Barb Cooper's wife works at vault tech and tells Cooper she's working hard to get them into one of the good vaults hinting at the fact that a lot of the vaults were used for inhumane experiments and girl if that's not a red flag I don't know what is Cooper meets with one of the old actor and Veteran friends Charlie Charlie has been going on to communist meetings Cooper is pretty anti-communist but Charlie explains to him the idea of Judiciary responsibility and how it applies to companies like vault tech as he explains it vault tech is a corporation with a responsibility to make money for its investors vault tech is being hurt by the recent peace negotiations when there's peace there's less need for nuclear prooved vaults which is what vault tech is selling they have a fiduciary responsibility to their investors to continue the war and keep everyone in a state of paranoia and fear and as we see in the final episode Charlie ends up being right about all of this back at his house Cooper gets a call from a man named Henry from vault tech this turns out to be Hank Lucy's father who will go on to get cryogenically frozen in Vault 31 during an argument about the Vault Barb tells Cooper this a special Vault for management where we will oversee all of the other vaults she's been trying to get their family into a vault for management and I we never actually learn what happens to Barb and if she survives in the future this Vault she's describing sure sounds like Vault 31 but it could be a completely different vault in Vault four Lucy and Benjamin are talking in his office there's a shot of a fish tank which foreshadows The Aquatic nature of experiments that were done in this vault which deal with human and fish hybrids it's kind of gross meanwhile Maximus learns his power armor has been brought to the Vault and goes looking for something to replace the fusion core he finds a reactor room filled with glowing blue reactors these are taken straight from the games he comes back to a gift bag in his room complete with iconic Fallout food brands including fancy Lads snack cakes and sugar bombs specifically he gets a taste for caviar this seems kind of gross because I know the Vault experiments have to do with fish people so I'm really worried where they source that caviar from is it from fish people cuz that's in a classroom Lucy finds a chalkboard with outlines to Shady Sand's timeline and has an NCR flag similar to what we saw in the games this chalkboard caused a lot of backlash from some of the Fallout fans initially but Todd Howard has gone to clarify the official Fallout timeline the fall of shady Sands refers to some sort of upheaval faced by the city I'm thinking this is what caused the capital of NCR to be moved from Shady Sands elsewhere however the city continued to house residents and be part of the NCR until Hank nuked it sometime shortly after the events of fall at New Vegas in the year 2281 meanwhile the ghoul is being interrogated by a man named sell who claims to be the president r that mova also goes by the name the flame mother it's never made clear why this is but I'll get into it a little later sell ask if the ghoul is still looking for her and this is mysterious never explained but I imagine this is referring to his daughter Janie or maybe his wife Barb the ghoul mentions Philly and how he killed about nine or 10 people and I rewatched the Philly scene from the second episode and this count is actually spot on I think it's nine or 10 people because his first shot blows up a tower definitely killing one person maybe a second he then proceeds to shoot eight more people then the ghoul goes on to shoot his W free and take the wanted sign off the wall saying that's not how I remember her this foreshadows the fact that Maldova like Hank and the ghouls also from the pre-war era and had met Cooper before we later see this meeting when Cooper attends a communist gathering with Charlie back in Vault 4 Lucy attends a ritual that turns out to be a cultish warship for the flame mother mover was in Shady Sands at the time Hank dropped the bomb on it so it makes sense that the members of all four remember her as a lot of them are refugees from Shady Sands however it's never explained how she got the name flame mother it could be related to her invention of the cold fusion and how it could bring infinite energy to the Wasteland it could also be a reference for the bombing of shady Sands perhaps she played a role in helping the survivors there the episode then ends with Lucy going into level 12 which she had previously been told was off limits but she still did it anyways because she's our hero she's our gal she's our good time boy she finds a goldber in a tank in a lab the lab seems to have the tablets filled with chemistry equipment that looks very similar to the chem stations and Fallout games after watching a video of a woman giving birth to a school of fish Lucy is nearly caught by a scientist who grabs a Harpoon Gun Off the Wall there was a harpoon gun in Fallout 4 but it looks pretty different to this one here however given the Aquatic experiments that were done here the Harpoon makes sense to have on the Shelf Lucy makes a run for it but she's caught in the episode ends as she is dragged past maximus' room while he eats popcorn episode 7even the radio opens in the middle of the Wasteland a pair wearing NCR veteran ranger gear search for metal this furthers the idea that the NCR is no longer active in this area and the remnants have scattered one of the Scavengers finds a bullet next to an empty nuca Cola bottle back at their house the ghoul gets information on mover's location at the Communist meeting Cooper learns that mover was working on a cold fusion device which would mean Infinite Energy btech bought her companies which means they bought her inventions by proxy they sheld the cold fusion devices because the Sino amican war is a resource War the cold fusion would end that war and mova gives Cooper a listening device she wants him to plant on his wife's pit boy so he can learn the truth about what she gets into at her job he's hesitant at first but eventually just does it in Vault 4 Lucy is told that the members of The Vault there are the ancestors of the original Vault dwellers the Hawthorns who we see in the Galaxy news broadcast last episode were given free reign to do whatever they wanted they experimented on other Vault dwellers splicing their DNA with the DNA from aquatic animals eventually their experiments rebelled and the Hawthorns were eaten by a gulper which Benjamin says was his great uncle Peter oh this Vault experiment would be right at home in the Fallout games which often feature inhumane and cruel experiments being run in most of the vaults in the Wasteland thus stops at a red rocket gas station this station looks very similar to Red Rocket Station seen in Fallout 4 also notice the gas is $113 that's because gas had become a very very scarce during the pre-war life hence the resource War we also see nacac Cola and a milk vending machine at the gas station which we've seen in the games Lucio sends execution by banishment to the surface one of the the ladies in the audience is eating fresh popcorn a familiar brand from the games H Lucy is then given two weeks of supplies and very politely exiled from The Vault Maximus steals the fusion core from The Vault and uses it to power his armor attacking the Vault dwellers as he mistakenly assumed Lucy situation is more dire than it was sorry after they escape the Vault Lucy feels bad that they stole their Fusion core and it's another great Fallout moral conundrum steal the fusion core to make your mission easier but damn a vault in the process Lucy of course is doing her good guy playthrough so she returns the core bless her heart out on the Wasteland thus hikes through the wrecked remains of the Hollywood Hills as he goes he listens to DJ Carl on kpss radio this is played by Fred Armon the radio broadcast sounds very familiar and similar to the in-game radio announcements you often hear in Fallout it's also region specific which is a nice touch in the games these are stations you can only pick up in certain areas and this feels like one of those he walks past the snake oil salesman who tried to sell will zig's foot healing serums way back in Philly in episode 2 this is especially hilarious here because Thad is's foot is also messed up from Maximus stepping on it with his armor so the snake oil salesman once again offers a foot healing serum and guess what it works Daddy's foot heals near instantly well it turns out that serum turned him into a ghoul so while it did temporarily heal him it will eventually turn him into a feral ghoul which is [ __ ] up back in Vault 33 someone has fed rat poison to the Raiders who were kept as Prisoners has never explicitly said who it is but it's got to be Steph it's got to be my girl Steph I know it's her when Norm goes to visit her and chat she says this it's just terrible about the Raiders isn't it but they had just been poisoned and I don't think anyone could have told her in time so it's definitely [Music] step the gou meanwhile has been able to track thus and arrives at the same Red Rock gas station he finds wiig's dog which thus abandons and calls it dog meat this has been the classic name given to several K9 companions in the game I love dog meat it's also just named after the fact that they eat dog meat go figure thus waits for the Brotherhood of Steal to pick him up at the kpss radio station though the name is different it looks very similar to the wrvr radio station we saw in Fallout 4 DJ Carl has surrounded the station with traps traps are very common in the Fallout universe and there are locations similar to this that have been trapped by their occupants for protection and the bear trap we see here is from the games I also just like that people hated listening to this music so much that they ventured their way to the station and this is all their dead bodies that's why he gives a little warning to not come there Lucy and Maximus arrive and Lucy takes Wills head the Brotherhood shows up and thus makes a run for it since he doesn't have the head and he's a goul now so they're likely going to kill him Maximus stays behind to BU Lucy some time and they kiss and as they kiss the two separate heads start kissing too and it's kind of cute and kind of gross back in Vault 32 Steph has been made the overseer as she was from Vault 31 and Vault 31 dwellers are always overseers as we see do the math Norm goes snooping in the vault 33 overseer office though there's a painting on the wall of a man riding a horse that was actually an in-game item for Fallout 4 the painting is a parody of Napoleon crossing the Alps but in the game the face of Napoleon had been replaced with Todd Howard's face instead as Norm tries to break into the computer he bypasses the password and is met with the system admin bypass screen this is the same one that appears in the hacking miname in Fallout 4 complete with the attempts remaining tally at the top even the words like mutate dubs systems Etc all taken from the game the episode ends with Norm entering the mysterious Vault 31 after contacting their overseer via computer the final episode of the show starts with Maximus on board of Verte bir headed towards Philly the Brotherhood of still have taken the town and is now under their control we see the Brotherhood Airship known as The Pride win I don't really ever pronounce it it's a it's a hovering overhead we saw this ship back in the first episode and previously had appeared in Fallout 4 in the game it was constructed using Salvage technology from the Fallen Enclave encampment at Adams Air Force Base which was an event that took place in Fallout 3 Maximus has led to the center of town this is where the ghoul had shot nine or 10 people back in the second episode but has been cleared out and turned into some sort of central staging area for the Brotherhood Maximus presents the decoy head as will zigs and it's quickly determined it's a fake quintis then interrogates Maximus learning the truth about Titus and where the real head can be found the way the scene is shot with a lot of close-ups have led some folks online comparing the cinematography in the scene with how the dialogue and the Fallout games look in the first game you would get little videos of the NPC's talking and in the newer games NPCs and the players are frozen in place while you talk to them while I don't think it's perfect representation I get what you're all going for meanwhile Lucy approaches the Griffith Observatory she walks through the fields of corn and I'm thinking that mover had these planted maybe a memory of Lucy's mom Rose over and Rose seem to have had like a relationship after Rose fled Vault 33 and we know Vault 33 had a lot of corn so maybe Rose planted corn when she moved to Shady Sands and now it reminds mover of her she is escorted by two NCR Trooper remnants after Shady Sands was bombed a group of NCR soldiers and civilians took shelter with mover at the Griffith Observatory where they built this community in a flashback Cooper runs into Bud Askins outside of vault tech office the arrangement of the logo here is very similar to the vault tech headquarters we saw in Fallout 3 but is driving in what appears to be a zip a type of car from the modern Fallout games and you can tell it's electric by the engine wine we hear when he pulls up also when he turns and looks out the window at Cooper the framing might be me being crazy the framing of his head through the window of the car might be foreshadowing his appearance later in the episode as a brain on AR Roomba Bud tells Cooper about his leadership program called buds buds which is meant to solve the problem of The Limited human lifespan's impact on large scale projects this is the same program that would see vault tech managers cryogenically frozen in Vault 31 so that they could be awoken lat and continue to manage Bud's projects inside the observatory though Lucy meets malov and finds her father in a cage she goes over to wiig's head and she extracts the cold fusion device from it meanwhile in Vault 31 Norm discovers the eventual fate of Bud his existence as a brain on AR Roomba this is what the actual subtitles call him a brain on a Roomba in the flashback Cooper listens in on Barb and Bud as they give the presentation to the CEOs of the larger companies we get a cameo here from Robert house the CEO robco he was the central character in New Vegas he's a genius and survived into the future by uploading his brain into a super computer where he was able to defend Las Vegas from the nuclear attack we also see Leo Von Feldon the research head of westtech the company that created the fev and the power armor he was mentioned in both the original Fallout and Fallout 3 then there's Big MT the defense contractor hired during the Sino American War by the US government their research facility was the location of the Old World Blues DLC for New Vegas where their leaders replace their bodies with robots this kind of happens a lot in the Fallout Universe they're represented here by Frederick Sinclair who appeared in Fallout New Vegas in that game he actually converted the Sierra madri casino into a Vault to survive the nuclear war fun fact about him he will eventually die trying to disable a trap he set for a Starlet that was attempting to steal from just as fun as a fun fact can be finally there's Julia Masters a representative for rep con a rocket engineering company who was also mentioned in New Vegas in general this scene and a lot of the final episode have a lot of little Easter eggs that point to the events of New Vegas being important to the show moving forward and I for one am here for that during the meeting Bud convinces the other companies to collaborate on their project Mr House objects to the vaults referencing the same rat studies that were on the TV in Vault 32 Barb describes the vaults as essentially incubation Chambers to create the ideal postwar Society she offers the vaults to other companies so they can run their own test on Humanity in the games of course most of the vaults were running some sort of like social psychological or medical experiment this depiction of the vaults being developed by different companies I think makes a lot of sense given how many different experiments we learn about in the games it tracks that these were all results of different companies and not all just vault tech the CEOs started throwing out different ideas for Vault and some of the are references to ones we know that actually exist Sinclair suggests an overcrowded Vault where people would have to compete to survive this would become Vault 27 which was outlined in the Fallout Bible Julia suggests a vault run by a robot that delivers milk which I don't think we've seen before Leo brainstorms a vault were illegal immigrants are used as test subjects to create super soldier mutants well not like a perfect match this is similar to vault 87 that appeared in Fallout 3 which suffered the effects of the fev on humans however I don't think it was home to illegal immigrants and from what I can tell the vault's original purpose was something else and then later converted into a Feb research Vault we also hear ideas for pumping psycho thropic drugs into the air supply a reference the Vault 106 which could be visited in Fallout 3 where the drugs were still active in the air some 200 years later finally a vault where parents and children are separated and only the smartest kids reach adulthood is proposed by Julia this would be Vault 75 from Fallout 4 they told the kids they were being trained as soldiers to retake the Wasteland then when they turned 18 they would leave the Vault but in reality the best ones had their jeans harvested and the others were executed this is like the saddest Vault ever also its original overseer was unknown woman and I wonder if that unknown woman could just be Julia here then Barb tells them that they can assure a need for radiation proof vaults because vault tech could drop the bombs thems starting the nuclear war in the games it was always kind of hinted that China dropped the first bomb when it was clear that America was winning the war but maybe they were framed by vault tech it could also be true that even though vault tech talked about dropping the bombs they didn't actually do it we know many of the vaults were unfinished when the bombs were dropped so it seems odd that vault Tech would just drop nukes before finishing their own vaults also Cooper and their daughter were outside when the bombs dropped and if I believe anything about Barb is that she wants a good future for her daughter so I think she'd make sure Janie was safe before the bombs were dropped but she also says the iconic Fallout line and more war never changes in the flashback Cooper also meets Henry Barb's assistant who is Hank in Vault 31 buds brain on a Roomba reveals the purpose of Vault 31 and 32 to be Vault Tech's breeding pool the ultimate expression of HR R&D genetically selected to breed with my buzz to create a class of super managers this was the same language he used talking to Cooper last episode these people would be bred with buds buds to create a group of super managers to inherit the earth after vault tech has wiped the surface clean at the observatory mova reveals the truth about Hank Rose and the bombing of shady Sands mova also convinces Hank to give her the password she needs to activate her cold fusion technology also I just want to shout out the set design of this show even the tech console work thingy looks exactly like they do in the games and that's just cool to me however they are interrupted by the arrival of the Brotherhood of Steel and we get a reference to Apocalypse Now as the ver birds fly in front of the Setting Sun filmmakers love referencing this shot we just saw it actually in our Kong Skull Island breakdown as well Maldova exits the Griff of Observatory along with NCR Remnant troops and she's wielding a laser pistol from the games there's a shot of blood hitting the crops and I think it's mirrored in the first episode as the Brotherhood is still assault the base Maximus uses a t60 as a mobile cover this is a real thing soldiers do in Warfare but you know with like real tanks as they enter the compound they are attacked by the ghoul the ghoul turns out the lights and shoots the soldiers in their weak points this scene with the only lighting being the muzzle flashes reminds me of a similar scene from equilibrium the most recent Batman movie copied the scene as well but people of culture know equilibrium did it first Maximus comes to rescue Lucy and frees Hank before she can tell him he's a dirty rotten bastard Man Hank Dawn some power armor and Maximus gets hit in the face again and I'm telling you this dude's face takes such a beating in this show it's up Hank flees when the ghoul makes appearance and as he looks out at the Wasteland the ghoul gives us another delivery war never changes twice in one episode how did we get so lucky the ghoul figures there's somebody behind the wheel of the Wasteland and that Hank is probably on his way to see them so he and Lucy set off to follow Hank setting up their arcs for season two and as they leave the observatory we can see the Hollywood sign is visible behind the ghoul only it now has an additional sponsored by nuca Cola sign below it how classy malova is fatally wounded in the assault but before she dies she turns on her cold Fusion device as she dies the lights of the ruins of La start to turn on powered by her device and Maximus is given the credit for her death and is hailed as a knight by the Brotherhood who ultimately takes the grip of the observatory and mover's cold fusion invention in the final shot of the series Hank walks through the desert crushing a deathclaw skull under his foot the death claws perhaps the most iconic and one of the most powerful enemies in the game they were created by the US Army before the apocalypse by mutating a bunch of mutated animal stock primarily the Jackson's chameleon but the real reveal comes when we see what is looking out at the city of Las Vegas in the Fallout Universe Las Vegas is not known as New Vegas and was a major location in the game Fallout New Vegas the city was under the control of Mr Robert house who we saw at the vault tech meeting and his securitron robots it was basically a sovereign city state within the new California Republic Mr house is trying to bring New Vegas back to its former glory and plan to use the city's economy to fund further technological Pursuits which would eventually culminate and is sending Colony ships into space in search of a better planet on which Humanity could Thrive the closing credits may give us some hint about the state of New Vegas and then we see a billboard for Tops hotel and casino a location from the game as well as the billboard advertising cryo suits and another sign for Lucky 38 Casino the crow suits might be hinting at a consumer technology similar to the one buds buds were frozen in but the real Clues come from the state of the city itself it appears like it was the scene of a battle or Riot as we see crashed NCR Verte Birds on abandoned streets if all of this is actually what New Vegas is like and not just some representation of it it seems like the NCR attacked New Vegas and likely overran it before being pushed out of the area after the destruction of shady Sands leaving the city an abandoned wreck however part of me doesn't think this image is supposed to be taken as completely Canon since Mr house is one of my favorite Fallout characters I'm really hoping he's alive and some sort of major player in The Following Season there are also a few lingering questions the first season has left us with for one if New Vegas is Hank's destination and not just a stop on his journey and if what the ghoul said is true that Hank's returning to the people who are behind everything this implies that Mr House may still be alive and Powerful player in New Vegas it's clear from The Boardroom scene that he was in a position to closely collaborate with vault tech so it's very possible he had a hand in creating Vault 31 through 33 or at least knowledge of it and thus have some relationship with Hank he didn't need a place in their vaults himself as he had his own method of living well into the future he could have been allied with them in some sort of way also was never explained how mover made it to this time period but there are a few possibilities I think most likely it's that because she invented cold fusion and her companies were bought by vault tech VA Tech saw her as an important personnel and offered her a spot in one of their vaults and maybe she even worked for them following the buyouts this Vault similar to Fallout for had cryogenic Chambers which were able to hold humans in suspended animation for over 200 years perhaps this was a vault full of important or useful people that vault tech could thaw out when they were needed so at some point they thought out Maldova or maybe Raiders thought her out or maybe the equipment failed and she was released and Maldova was able to make her way to Shady Sands or perhaps she partnered with Mr house and stayed in one of the cryos suits and we see advertis in the final credits there's also this Theory online that I've seen that mdov is able to clone herself and maybe her Consciousness into her clones clones are a big part of Fallout universe so this technically is possible in the New Vegas DLC Old World Blues there was a plot by old Big MT Executives who survived in brain Bots to move their Consciousness from their preserved brains into host bodies so maybe mover was developed in that like similar technology given that she was like a big part of vault tech at this time she might have had some exposure to Big MT in their Tech we also never learned how Cooper survived their bomb or what happened to Janie and Barb and I expect we'll definitely see more of this story in the second season and I wouldn't be surprised if Barb and Janie survived into this timeline likely being frozen in some bulk Tech contraption somewhere else and that's it for our very long very thorough breakdown of the Fallout Series on Amazon Prime go check it out if you haven't thank you so so so so much for Noah Chan writing this breakdown it was such a
