hi what's the difference between these two drives one is a legitimate 16 gig Kingston flash drive while the other one is a fake 32 gig one in this video will show you how you can detect those fake drives but first I will show you how to work and what are the risks involved in to using them so let's get started contrary to popular belief most flash drives sold online are fake sometimes they are clearly not legitimate like this tutor by drive sold for $4 on which cam but occasionally you can find fake sticks that are showed that the same price as the original one like in my case because of a USB Drive comes almost entirely from the storage chip inside the problem is that the manufacturing process for these chips is far from perfect and a big part usually between 30 to 40 percent does not pass the quality test I'm expect that those faulty chips are discarded but they are not instead they are sold to the grey market and become fake drives these drives usually have a much smaller capacity than the desired one and their lifespan is shorter the problem is that they easily fool most people because they mount a modified controller that displays a fake capacity so they are indistinguishable from an original one until you have problems or you specifically look at them another thing to consider is that there are two types of fake drives the first type after exceeding the real capacity will simply ignore the files and not save them the second type after exceeding the real capacity will rewind and override the previous content that is much worse because as you go on with the transfer all the previous files will be inevitably corrupted let's find the real capacity of this fake 32 gig Drive we're very stools for this job but we will use Aaron prep USB the download link is in the video description after connecting the drive open the software and be sure to select the correct Drive in the top list then click on quick size test and follow the instructions after a few minutes in McKees 10 you will see a result in this case the drive was indeed false and the real capacity was around 13 gigs now I wanted to know which type of fake Drive mine was do data fold a simple procedure I copied the tank a bytes worth of files in the drive less than the 13 gigs detected earlier so expected that the files were not corrupted to verify that I have created the checksum they were equal Sona corruption occurred then I copied another 10 gigs worth of files in the drive expecting a corruption and an interesting thing happened the read speed that was almost four times faster I will explain that in a bit running the checksum on the new files shown that there was a corruption as expected now here comes the real test we want to see if the initial files are still valid or not running another checksum on the initial batch shows that they are still intact so I Drive whose of the first type and after exceeding the real capacity the files were simply ignored that also explained increase in write speed because at the end the files were being ignored instead of written on the storage if you are curious about the actual content of the corrupted files I tested it and they are indeed empty containing almost only zeros the conclusion is that the fake Drive like mine you can use it until you reach about 30 gigs of files that's it I'll not recommend using it for important stuff because they are mostly made of food chips and they may break at any moment thank you very much for watching if you liked the video please subscribe to my channel because I post other tutorials the ideas and projects and I hope to see you next time
