Alright! TwoSet reacts! - A little bit sick. - Yeah. But we're here today to review a highly requested... Show from you guys which is... Of course, Nodame Cantabile. It's a show that's based - It's a live action show based on... I think an anime or manga. - I don't know which one came first. - Don't look at me. It's very, very popular amongst musicians because it portrays the life of a classical music student in a music school. Mhm. So we're gonna see today just how well of a job the live action did in portraying this... - Classical music scenes. - Classical music scenes, yes Is the camera focused on us? We know that's been a complaint. Yeah, that's right. Get down microphone. Yeah, yeah. - This microphone is hogging all the attention. - I know. Alright, so, let's see. Sounds more like a high school orchestra right now with that A. It's not in tune. Normally - Norm - This is what it's normally like, guys, ok? Yeah. And what theirs like is like this. It doesn't change. Normally a professional... Or even any orchestra, a professional orchestra... They'll tune the note accordingly straightaway. So you play it in tune? Yeah. I'll go. I'll automatically fix it. But here, it's obvious they're.... They're just staying... It's not... Fixing. Now I'm out of tune. They did get one thing right though, which is the strings come after the winds, but... It should be the winds first. - Yeah. Yes. - Finish. Then, the strings. Not everyone - Everyone doesn't tune together at once. Yeah. Because it's too hard to hear yourself. There's too many people playing. Okay, the conductor doesn't walk on before the tuning finishes... - He just walks in. - Normally, there's tunes... Normally, the orchestra tunes and when it finishes, it's quiet. And there's a bit of silence to create the tension and atmosphere and then the conductor walks out. Yes. You kind of got that right, except one thing. So, usually, the conductor walks on and the orchestra does stand up to go bow with him, right? But, usually, the concertmaster will stand... Once the conductor is already kind of walking in. - Correct? I mean, it varies... - Yes. So... It depends if the concertmaster walks in... The principal cellist kinda... - Does a little... - Yeah. And the concertmaster stands up... And everyone stands up together. Yes. But, in this case the conductor had to go there and go... Which is a little bit like, awkward, like... - Get up, get up. - Come on. I mean... I mean, the lights should have been on already, right? Yes, the lights should have already been on. I don't know why it dimmed then... It - They got one thing right, though, in the sense that - That the conductor bows and the orchestra doesn't bow. Would have been awkward if the whole orchestra bowed. - That would be funny. - Cause that doesn't happen. - So that was right. - And that - And they have a nice looking concert hall. I like it. That is true too. That is a legitimate classical concert hall. Oh, and the conductor came on from the right side as well, so... - Oh, yeah. - Good job on that. - That's accurate. - They got that right. The conductor raises the baton and then the orchestra... - Raises their instruments. - Mhm. Alright. Let's - Let's dissect that a little bit. He gave two up beats. Yeah. I means it's... Alright. It could be two, could be one, but that's right. Usually, before the beginning of a symphony... The conductor needs to give something, so the orchestra knows... - Once they come in, the tempo. - Yeah. It looks pretty good so far. Let me just watch - Look again. Okay, so that's right in the strings at least. Mhm. It's like that kind of down bow motion. - Hold up. - This guy looks a little bit suspicious though. Yeah. I mean, first of all, he's wearing gloves, I don't know what's up with that, you don't... Usually wear gloves... The pinkie looks a bit tense as well. - The pinkie's bent that way. - Yeah, it's definitely not... Not - I mean, it's not incorrect, but it's not normal. Did you see that? This is very slow. But look at his bow contact. - You ready? - Yeah. Oh... Whoa! It bounced off. Whoa.... Oh... That's - Oh, that's suspicious. - Yeah. - You don't really - A concertmaster shouldn't be going... Yeah. I suspect that because... A. His pinkie is not - Tense. Yeah. Which means not great technique, and... B. You know, typically, the concertmaster is a main character. Which means it's probably got an actor - rather than a musician. - Yeah, it makes sense. So... - Alright, fair enough. - Yeah. Fair enough. They've actually done a lot of detail in making sure... At least in the strings... The bow strokes are all... - Correct. - Yup. Like up... When it's piano, it's near the tip. It's not... *Loud violin playing* Like some movies. - Okay... Okay. - Yeah, okay. I mean, look, come on, I mean... It's great that he's doing his best. - Yeah. - But it's very clear that the notes were off the string. - Mhm. - Meaning... And, the actor was - The actor's bow was on the string. Yeah, if you look at him versus the deskie, it becomes all clear. Yeah, there you go. So, that's the orchestra.... - Are musicians. Well, so far. - Yeah. - Yeah. - And then... The main dude, which is an actor, because he's a character. I think he played like... This kind of bow stroke. Also, if you look at their left hands... Oh, yeah, he also... Yes, she actually does the right fingering. - Shifted. - It's shifted. Third position. But he stays in first. So, even though his finger-faking looks quite realistic... He doesn't shift at the end. - Yeah. - Another sign that he's not necessarily a violinist. Even though he's doing a very good job looking like one. - Yeah. - But yes, let's continue. Just one thing to - My guess is this guy's not a conductor. Even though he's doing the 4/4 pattern correctly. Because, the reason is, he's... His gesture is always the same. It's always kinda these very big, big gestures, which is... Duh, duh, duh, duh. Duh, duh, duh, duh. Duh, duh, duh... I think, I mean... In conducting, the right hand usually keeps the tempo. But the left hand is... Used for cueing or... Phrasing or articulating or... Dynamics. Musical gestures. Because, if they're just... Mirroring each other. It's kind of like redundant. You might as well just use the right hand. You don't need the left hand. It seems like the orchestra is running by itself. Yeah. The music part... Obviously, there's some times in music... Doesn't require, like Eddy said... One, two, three... Because that's quite heavy. Mhm. Yeah. Should we give an example? Yes. I mean, you know what I think we should do? We should find an actual recording. - And see what the conductor does. - Yeah, that's true. We should do that. Do you see that, guys? - The right hand. - Yeah. - So... So, yeah. - Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. He's not beating four. - Yeah. - Buh. It was clear the music was - Even the violin part was like... Two... Three... Four... - Rather than... - Yep. Yeah, he's showing where the important places to go to musically. Yeah, you can see it's... As musicians, we already feel so much more musical information significantly. There's much more information coming to us. We can see what he wants, he which - Which harmony he wants out with his left hand. He's like... - Bring this part out with this gesture. - Yeah. - Yes. - Or the phrasing like... This part, was kind of gesturing... 'Don't drop the beat'. Like, keep it going. It's - Conducting is an art form. Alright, guys... Please don't talk during a classical symphony. Hahahaha. Kakkoii! Aw man... Wait a second... Whoa, that was off, no? - His conducting's not in time there. - Yeah, it's behind! Because there's a time signature change there, I think. Gold flute. They're more expensive, but make a richer sound. Nice, good on her. I mean, he's trying. The bow is still like - He's like Ohhhh.... He's sliding to the fingerboard and he uses too much bow. Actual - Also - Also - Just that. Yeah. Also, dead giveaway is the gestures when musicians are not playing the notes. If you look at him, he's kind of... He doesn't - He seems like he's unsure when the music is gonna come. Yes. So, if I show you the gestures like, one... Rather than... Yeah. And that's particularly important, because he's sitting as the principle or concertmaster. So, the concertmaster is a special role... Not just to play... But also to lead the section. So the section is actually trained to not just look at the conductor... But look at the gesture... In the scroll and the bow... - Of the concertmaster. - Yeah. I'll try and follow Eddy. Here we go. Yeah, so... That's very clear. But if he doesn't give you any cues. It's very scary for the section if the con... *Brett curses* It's very *curses* It's very scary for the section if the concertmaster or principle doesn't lead. Or show you anything. - I don't know what they're doing here, but... - I mean... I just know that if this actually happened... I'm pretty sure the audience can see. Yeah! Hahaha! That's very obvious. Can I just say - Even for someone that can't play violin, to actually get the string crossings and correct down and up bow... Mhm. - Like, good job. - Good job. Yeah. I'm glad they put some sort of effort... Into try to make this look realistic. Yes. Yes. Thank you. Why... Why... Why? Okay, okay. I mean, they maybe put too much effort. Wha - What? Why? First thing before we even talk about the violins... And the flutes or whatever... This bit... Okay, so... This is actually kind of funny, because we - I don't know if you were in the orchestra, though... But we did it once in concert. - I remember. - Yeah. Except, when we did it... There was a bigger pause because in the actual music, there's only one beat rest. That's no... And it's not enough time to twist. Duh... Buhdadadah - Bum! It's very, very quick. And if you look here... Shouldn't they be playing as well? They start spinning while the music's still sounding. While it might - It's possible to do... - The time is too short. - It's way too short. They started spinning it before the music actually ended. And, if these - That the cellos and bass actually stop, the sound would have been halved. - Yup. Yeah. - Yeah. Guys... Can we just make something about science? Violin players rely on gravity. For the bow to put pressure on the strings. - Like that, right? Gravity. - Gravity. When you play... You actually don't want the violin to be horizontal, - you want the strings to be horizontal. - Yeah. So, it's 90 degrees. Now... If it's like here... Where's the gravity going? To your face! And it requires you to push that way onto the string. And... It's very difficult. Yeah. And unnecessary. Yeah, so, while it's possible... You can't play with a good sound. So let's, for example... If I play like this... I don't know if you guys can tell, but the dynamics... It's gotten - It's halved. - Yeah. - And the tone quality is... It sounds more nasal. - And it's just really bad - Bad. - Just bad sound quality. - Yeah. But you can get the notes, technically. And the trumpets, I mean... I think it is possible to play though. Yeah... But, I've never seen... - But people just don't do it. Yeah. - Just don't do it. Cause... Okay - I think it's cause there's so much precision required in playing these instruments... Any unnecessary movement... Is just... - It doesn't help. - You're... Working against - You're making it more likely to mess up. Yeah. And for the woodwind players and brass players, all that movement moves their core... - Yes. - The sound - The - The air -They need air to come out, somehow. - Yeah. - They're like... Yeah... She just said, ''that's so cool''. - I don't know, I guess.... - I guess so... I guess... Do you guys think that's cool? All these people in the first are violinists cause they're all in 4th position. But this guy's in first position... In the front. He's just - He's just playing a B. Yeah, but it's clear the rest are actual musicians, - which is really cool. - That's cool. - Nice cut. - Yeah. To the fourth movement. Yeah, the music just... It just cut 40 minutes of the symphony. What was that? Yeah! Yeah, come on! Doosh, doosh, doosh, doosh, doosh. Party. I think he should have watched a recording on YouTube of a conductor. Yeah. I mean... He's in time, but it's... Never seen a conductor go wah... Yeah... Ooohh!! Ooo.... Please don't do that... That is a rule. - Ooooo. - No beep beep, kch. Yeah, you do not do that. It's - I mean... I guess it's loud, the last part. But you don't have a camera that has a shutter sound. - Yeah. - In a concert. Unless you are the paid photographer. But usually, they operate during dress rehearsals. -Yes. - Not in the actual concert. - They missed... They missed it! - They missed that! They're like... Spin... Ahh! I mean... Yeah... I guess... I guess I get it... They wanna make it more fascinating. - More fun. Yeah. - More fun. I mean... I don't think you can do this with the flute. Because your embouchure moves... Whoop! You know. It's cool how they got everyone standing up. Yeah. As a great, like, grandioso effect at the very end. How come the violins aren't standing up? Yeah, I don't know... - But the... - But the... - The violas? - The violas? What! I'm so confused. So how come the violas are standing but the violins are... Oh, look at that... Aww... See? Because we're humble. - Yeah. Violins, we're humble. - We're humble. Sit down. Be humble. - Yeah, that's right. - That's what we do Okay. Why is there no applause? Bravo! Okay, that delay was a little bit long. - It was very dramatic. - Yeah. *Inhale* Bravo! I mean, normally if a fast piece ends... The claps do come right away. Unless it's like... A super well educated audience and the... - The lingering note is like the end of Mahler 9. - Yes. It's just like... The emotion is still in the air. People wait... - But... - But usually that doesn't happen. Usually people - Some people do yell out 'Bravo' though. I'm not a big fan of it. - But that does happen in classical concerts. - Yeah. Does happen. It's fine. - It's cool. - Yeah. Pretty good, though. I say it all in. I'd say it's definitely much better than most of the movies we've seen. Yes. So, a lot of respect to the directors and actors for putting in the effort. And also the fact that they have real musicians. That was really cool. Yes. Thank you. Um, actually... Apparently... I did a little bit of research. Well, there you go. Well done. Anyway guys, thank you so much for watching. We're very - Kind of happy with this one. Yeah. We hope you guys are educated by watching this. And please subscribe, and like to see more of TwoSet Violin. Yes. Definitely check out Nodame as well. It's a good show. Good show. Yeah. Bravo!
