for finals day i thought the fans have been large numbers throughout the entirety of the week thoroughly enjoying the balance and enjoying all the activities that are going on around the arena and of course there's been many fans watching through television but you can also follow through bwf social media facebook twitter instagram and youtube badmintonworld.tv now this is where i think we should have been earlier morton that bottle stand how did we miss that i really don't know now we've we've not checked it out properly we better do that perhaps it's too late but it has been great for the fans hasn't it i mean there's so interaction so much interaction with the the merchandise stores and the food outlets and i know you've eaten here a couple of times and mingled with the fans it's been great it has and i have been watching para badminton as well yeah good i have been in watching it as well that's extraordinary and it's been free for people to come watch the paris world championships yeah what a week it's been here in basel i read before i came that on average 300 days of sunshine a year and they haven't disappointed because we've only had a couple of days where it's not been bright sunshine we've had a wonderful time the fans have been arriving in t-shirts and yeah but 300 days that's a lot it is a lot isn't it really a lot well they better get back into the main arena quickly because we have just one more final to come and that is the men's doubles final it's muhammad al-san and hendra satya won the number four seeds two-time former champions in their third final as a pair up uh against takuro hoki and yugo kai by ashi of japan well when we look at the men's doubles draw from quarter final stage two pairs from japan two from china two from indonesia and uh it was the two pairs from indonesia that made it through to the semi-final stage so for a fifth time in the men's doubles discipline at world championships two medals four indonesian pairs but in the bottom half of the draw there was a huge upset because hoki and kobayashi beat last year's champions league hue and chen so the scene is set for the men's doubles final for muhammad hassan and hendra said he won they're each actually in their fourth world championship final because they both contested a final with different partners but when we look at the win loss records for their careers as far as the indonesians are concerned 17 titles from 26 finals for hoki and kobayashi just four finals and two titles so this only their fifth final of their careers so for both these players they walk out onto center stage for a fourth time in a world championship final third time as a pair and when you consider this is a only their third world championship as a pair and they've won two titles it means they've never lost in the world championships as a combination so they win lost record in world championships as a pair 14 and love to get through to this final but what an occasion for takuro hoki and yugo kobayashi the left-hander trying to create history today by becoming the first pair from japan to win gold in the men's doubles discipline of course a year ago kimura and sonoda came so close when they lost in the final to legion and that's the only previous time that a japanese pen has been in the men's doubles as you can see this is the second meeting between these [Music] so the indonesians will both serve and choose ends [Applause] well for the record muhammad al-san was in the final two years ago with orian [Music] lost out to you he and his partner currently number two in the world ranking but they did spend 30 eight consecutive weeks as world number ones he'll turn 31 at 32 next month but for his partner hendra satyawan today is his 35th birthday and we all wish him many happy returns born in parmalang in central java and he won world championship goals with his former partner marcus quito that was in kuala lumpur in 2007 and when we look at their matches so far they had a buy in the first round and then they beat the dutch pairing of yellow mars and robin tarbonnen just 26 minutes for that then and done from scotland they had a good tournament young scottish pair quarter-final against the number 13 seeds [Music] semi-final against the number seven seeds the asian game silver medalist it went full distance against alfie and ardianto before winning 21-10 in the deciding game so to their opponents the number 12 seeds to kuro hoki turned 24 11 days ago currently number 13 on the world ranking ready to play but they have been one place higher the left-handed yuko kobayashi turned 24 last month born in miyagi prefecture on the east coast of the main island of honshu [Applause] they are in their first tournament final this year this japanese combination and like all seeded pairs in the doubles they had a bye in the first round philip and ryan chu of america in the second round that was only 24 minutes the number six seeds han chen kai and zhao hao dong 36 minutes for that in the third round quarter final against number three seeds the beaten finalists from last year and two-time medalist takeshi kimura and keigo sonoda that was a marathon match three games there and then the semi-final beating last year's gold medalists legion cray and liu chen in [Music] [Music] japan [Music] so only the second meeting between the two pairs the only previous time they met was in the semi-final of the recent indonesian super 1000 and it was won by the indonesian pair around three terrific games a match lasting 57 minutes if we have anything like that morton it should be a good final yeah we hope so yeah in all honesty we hope so we've had three matches that's been extremely one-sided and i would like to have a match here where it really ignites well if hitting the road 30 year one and mohammed our son do win of course for hindu rasettia one it would be a force [Applause] gold medal in the men's doubles discipline the only other pair or players to achieve that was the pair of chai yun and fu haifan it's a possibility of history being made either way around either way round because it's either a first gold for a pair from japan in the men's devils oh it's a record eating fourth goal [Applause] [Applause] oh i thought it may have come back in i think it's out however i think it's already interesting after five rallies here our son and seth and they're so good making these one two three shots and then you know very very short rallies but here already in the first five oh it sounds cool line catch but you can see the two japanese they can you know hold it together and really challenge sergio and assange when it comes to keep the rallies going and all that so it's already very interesting yeah [Applause] three oh okay yeah well we haven't had a left and right-handed combination win the men's doubles title since the last yeah of the four titles for chai yoon and fulham the last of their titles was in 2011. so eight years ago night morton the last left and right-handed combination in the final i asked dean this yesterday and he knew [Music] [Applause] the last the problem is that kim soo and uh no no no no in the finals so even um were in the finals so it's got to be after 2011. okay can't think of any just now boys you'll play as beau bowler morganson of course but they weren't the last ones the last ones flat fast exchanges again oh what a defense what's a shark from henry yeah the last left in right-hand accommodation was in jakarta when uh liu ciao long and chuck were in the final steen didn't know it either okay i'm so happy i'm saved but bowen morgan of course i should have had that one yeah let's go mine it's really extraordinary to me in the way that hokie and kobayashi have improved so much in recent times yeah they're definitely coming up and of course overall they are doing much much better but i also think that uh kobayashi is he's probably the best from from japan now in terms of playing from the back he's got a very very solid attack [Applause] [Music] part nearest to us thank him her the other six seven [Applause] push it long ah oh that's brilliant brilliant from hokey you don't see a lot of uh combinations who's able to withstand the pressure from uh seti one and i think that hokkien koyabashi is kobayashi is really doing that very very well and they extend the rallies see again daring to challenge uh setia one at the net with the block even though that set your understanding there you don't see that a lot and this time it was hoagy and that's really uh is very very interesting to watch that it's a completely different mindset that these two japanese goes into this match with four straight points i can't help but wonder whether this japanese pair against the women's doubles from last year when have only been in one world tour tournament final and was they were never in a final of a super series biggest tournament that they have won is an international challenger event there's lots of similarities to that yeah no grand prix titles no super serious titles no world tour titles and interesting even a year ago in the uh thomas copp this pair was in the team but they were never used yeah interesting and that's just a year ago yeah well they're playing extremely well at the moment [Music] um 20 seconds 20 seconds [Music] [Music] so a three-point advantage for hokie [Music] if i remember correctly yesterday with a simon setia one i have a feeling they were down at the mid-game interval of the opening game before absolutely storming through to win it 21-16 but it's an entirely different board game to play someone you know on a daily day basis from your same country and all that it's a completely different situation that's what they are against today so 10 12. it's a fantastic flick serve [Applause] solid defense by the two japanese here [Applause] [Music] this one here from this kind of distance still getting it back that's amazing [Music] [Applause] 13. [Applause] 12 13. [Music] i don't believe it good rally good rally by both players here very exciting [Applause] [Music] look at that total balance isn't it it just seems in the zone doesn't he it's playing well [Music] 14 13. oh so oh my goodness yeah good commitment to the front of the board from hulky [Music] [Applause] [Music] look at this he launches himself towards the net to play that kill no holding back at all [Music] it's a good start for the two japanese here and it will be interesting to see uh what counter we will see from the two indonesians knowing they're so vastly experienced something will come [Applause] 14 16. [Applause] absolutely that was the sitter yeah one point in it [Applause] [Music] around the service situation no rallies [Applause] [Music] [Music] i was well spotted by the umpire well was it a double hit there was a double hit on it or there was a hit on it while it was going out on the back line so um 71 hit it but it was just very very little but well spotted by the umpire [Music] as you can see now we are down to one two three four shots and this is where the indonesians are so good not only are they so good but it means that opponents don't get into a rhythm it's a good quick serve from muhammad 18 17. [Music] and watch it there might be another flat flick serve here coming [Music] yeah well i had expected it at the center of the court the middle line and not to the side [Applause] yeah because i don't think the sun hinders one was he was not ready for that one no not at all [Applause] 1918. [Applause] [Music] so oh that's super change your face and what a wonderful drop shot from henry yeah the best really well played [Applause] i liked he took the pace off of that one there it would have been very tricky for him to play a good smash chances would have been that that had gone in the net so i think it was a very very clever choice here [Applause] yeah gets the thumbs up the coaches no wonder [Music] and so often when it's tight with the hassan and seti one what happens one two and then they win 21 19. it happens so often let's see how it's panning out here [Applause] [Music] japanese pair got into the rally and now it is the number 12 seeds [Applause] and kobayashi who have the game point [Applause] opportunity was a lot going on on the japanese bench interesting to see what they're saying [Music] 20 all and extra points required until there's a clear two-point winning margin [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] and this is where 71 is so strong every time they're playing that return of serve to his backhand side this drive flat drive is coming and he is excellent doing it there's so much pressure on it so now again opportunity to the former champions that's it that's a great swap that's a strong reply [Applause] [Music] thank you oh it's gone wrong [Applause] so now a second game point opportunity for the two-time former champions i actually think kobayashi did what the coaches were asking him to lift it over the front player and into the deep corner that's sure oh what's up [Applause] [Music] the drama and the excitement second games opportunity now to the japanese combination [Music] [Music] [Applause] just held that shot to the last moment to guide it slightly across and hokie was committed to going forward straight striker who is just out of reach 23 all [Applause] it's a opportunity for a son and 71 to close out this opening game [Music] [Applause] and this time they convert the return of serve from tokoro hulki pushed long of the back line [Music] umphar confirms 25-23 the opening game having survived two game points against them the two-time former champions convert on their third game point opportunity 24 minutes [Music] [Music] coaches [Music] [Music] [Music] head coach for the japanese team seven world championship medals never lost to finally that's some sort of record isn't it well if hendra setia won wins today he will have never lost a final four's final one is three previous [Applause] well what an exciting match we have here [Music] [Applause] well the point of the racket from hulky towards his partner suggests he thought that was going along [Music] [Applause] [Music] from the gestures i think it was probably an instruction from the japanese coaches that they needed to hit more into the body or a little bit steeper they definitely want the attack and i also think that they want to hit steeper but who else better than that than kobayashi to do that because he's really playing some steep smashes hello three one [Applause] [Music] [Applause] yeah he had to twist from the backhand defense to the forehand defense the left-handed kobayashi yeah well placed by uh setiawan on his interception [Music] hey [Music] precision net shot from kobayashi okay seldom you see that the opponents of setiawan is sort of prepare to do that and try it out as and when he's standing there um takes courage to do that normally uh satya1 is really good closing down the the net five three [Music] [Applause] oh six three [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] seven three [Music] [Applause] four seven oh my goodness and kept in that's unbelievable but it's going to be a tough fight between the pairs from japan when it comes to qualification the olympics having three good pairs and the same goes actually for indonesia they also have three good pairs and as we all know only two players can qualify and both have to be in the top eight [Applause] and there's two pairs in the ranking from japan above this pair that we're watching now that was i was trying to imply of course kobayashi is left-handed and all that but he does remind me of fujai the way that he's attacking and on the court and that left hand and that big smash nine six ten six [Music] it's a good serve and it's a very handsome lead for hokie and kobayashi the mid-game interval of this second game five-point advantage [Music] [Music] 20 seconds [Music] chair [Music] well the former champions will need to cut out one or two unforced errors they want to win this in two straight games [Applause] 11 6 jake up [Applause] [Music] [Music] there was a good return of serve by kobayashi because that's dropping below the tape and it's making it difficult for setion to do something constructive about it forcing an error oh it's almost as if a son forgot the tobacco [Music] just playing it onto his forehand side [Applause] 14 7. [Applause] indonesians have gone completely off the boil yeah you can say that but i think the japanese are playing well interesting is that hoki is really strong in his defense where kobayashi is is not so strong but compensating with a very strong attack so if the indonesians wants to do anything about that i think they have to direct a lot of attacks towards kobayashi [Music] isn't it i know i've said this earlier but uh i feel that muhammad assange is probably the best of the two indonesians it didn't used to be like that in the past but i think he's the best now but i want to say that i think that industrial one is really playing well today yeah i think muhammad's son is already thinking about the third game he does not going to waste energy on this [Applause] [Music] oh yeah look at that casual defensive shot [Music] challenge call out [Music] [Music] [Music] 9 16 hey [Music] [Music] 17 9. yes well we're definitely going to see a third and deciding game here [Music] yeah just lifting the return yeah not interested in this game now oh it's too far to catch up don't want to waste the energy on it regrouping for the third and final game [Music] by the laws you have to do your best you have to play your best all the time play on i'm saying you've got to do your best all the time one game all 21 the response from the number 12 seeds [Music] 41 minutes into the match [Music] as long as you're trying to win the match i'm sitting here thinking the same yeah because you don't have to give your best all the time if there's a strategy that you're too far down and you want to win the match which is surely what's uh important that if you need to conserve your energy for the third game but i'm not sure exactly what the wording what the wording but i um i'm completely with you i'm the same wavelengths as you are on that one because yeah i'm sure we will see a third game the start here where it's going to be yes fireworks yeah exactly but once they they've got so far down what was it eight sixteen they were eight eighty nine down and believe you me there is no question whatsoever that assan and setio want this gold medal absolutely there's no doubt about that it's all about strategy here [Music] [Music] final game lol play [Music] all right oh [Applause] [Music] so oh that's a good backhand from mohamed hassan managed to keep that straight yeah it was great pressure great power [Music] [Applause] two one [Applause] [Applause] three [Music] oh that's good [Applause] [Music] [Applause] every single opportunity [Applause] five won the advantage we don't often see that do we longest rally of the match so far at 31 shots about hogan kobayashi here really holding their defense very very nicely and pushing the two indonesians on the back court and all that but it's of course extremely unlucky on that approach shot that they played there but they were really holding their defense nicely but 6-1 it doesn't look good if you look at it from a japanese point of view yeah but things can change so quickly in men's doubles it can but six one yeah yeah no i i agree morton yeah good shots going for the right hit two six [Music] [Applause] second service error from hugo kobayashi and that could be very costly that's a sign probably more of the nerves it could be the pressure is definitely on [Applause] three seven [Music] oh came off the frame [Applause] look at that finish pokey as soon as there was hesitation at the back of the court from ramasan he was stepping forward four seven [Applause] [Music] full it's gone along and all of a sudden pokey and kobayashi are right back in this deciding game there's now only two points in it [Music] a good return of serve there by one but equally well responded by kobayashi playing that block shot to the forehand side [Music] [Applause] but this is once again the defensive stance of the two japanese is a little bit far back and that means that a lot of these drop shots coming from the indonesians are very effective yeah brilliant okay is going forward to the net whenever he possibly can and he's making a big big difference yeah he's on fire and can't fall set yet for lack of commitment throwing himself on the court here trying to get it back it's not so often you see 71 on the floor no very rarely because he usually reads the game so well he's there before you your opponents even hit it before they even think about hitting it yes you're probably right we changed six nine [Music] yeah there he is again [Applause] it's a polaroid [Music] really makes such an effort to take it as early as possible at the net very impressive [Applause] [Music] urging them on [Music] [Applause] so it is a four point advantage for the number four seeds muhammad a son and hendra said here one as they change ends in this deciding game [Music] 52 minutes into the match well they played better from the far side of the court in the second game did this japanese pair and that's where they're going to finish the match i was thinking about that too whether that could make a difference but remember it was the indonesians who chosen say chosen yes [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] okay i just had in my own mind that first rally was important after the change of ends yeah 12 7 from an indonesian point of view is so much more appealing yeah yeah the left hand are doing the damage because they smash yet again [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] and the placement ensures as you can see hokie could move to the side and crouch underneath his partner and get ready for the interception it's not necessary this time but it was a as a textbook men's doubles situation [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] sometimes i get the feeling that you know he rather hit it so hard that making a mistake then the other the opponents are getting it back but uh you know that's of course the tricky way of looking at it but he is really hitting them hard sometimes when he's intercepting there [Applause] 10 12. [Applause] points every point so precious at this stage of a match but since 5'7 the japanese player has not been able to move closer than those two points [Applause] 11 13. [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] and they still can't get closer than two point deficit 14 11. [Applause] oh my goodness it all started with a terrific flick serve 15 11. [Applause] [Music] oh yeah i thought it had a chance to go over as well yeah just like you but it didn't let's have a look here let's see how close it really was it's a beautiful neck chord ah now he was further away from the net than i had realized thank you [Music] [Applause] [Music] 12 15. [Music] [Applause] they're so typical that rally of the indonesians forcing the left good placement of the smash from the sun and then hendra one intercepting and playing the winner from the front of the court oh now what's that they've been very very animated on the bench of the two indonesians they have a lot things to say to the two players i've noticed well exactly the same in that rally as the previous force in the short lift power smash from assange and the finish off nice all right [Music] and three points away now from a third world title as a pair uh sam and sergio won [Applause] [Music] [Applause] see that no that was a big one even the great man can feel the nerves perhaps uh look at how it's spinning in the air this is crossing the net [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] 13 18. [Applause] [Music] oh this is absolutely extraordinary two points away from the yeah title getting very animated they are [Music] [Applause] 14 19. [Applause] [Music] it's match point opportunities for a son and set here one to win a third world title as a pair a fourth for hendra set here one [Applause] of the match still another five opportunities [Applause] oh that was in decision and that one is out one is out there's a challenge a challenge from the japanese pair but i thought the same as you morton i thought that was out yeah the first one yeah what about that last one i thought it was out too that's out too here we go here we go yeah and a third world title for mohamed salah 21-15 in the deciding game they have never been beaten as a pair in world championships three world championships played and three gold medals for hendra satya1 he equals by winning a fourth title because of course he won gold in kuala lumpur in 2007 with marcus quido [Music] and he's achieved it on his 35th birthday what a wonderful birthday present and what a wonderful final assan and setia won 25 23 9 21 215 in the deciding game an hour and four minutes in duration [Applause] well the mc will interview the winning pair but that is absolutely extraordinary said [Applause] you already you have already won twice this title what how does it feel to bring back the gold medal back to indonesia [Music] me they're very happy and very proud and they didn't expect that they're going to win the title this year there are also a lot of indonesian fans here in the hall also some teammate what would you like to tell them they're very grateful for all the support in here in the whole and also in indonesia thank you so much pick up for the new world champion mommy version [Applause] well for both these players a fifth world championship medal but most importantly a third gold as a pair and a 35 year old morton on his birthday gold medal it's fantastic they really play well today and i especially as i said earlier i really think that uh setiawan played really well today yeah i remember you and i having breakfast earlier in the week and you asked me who i thought would win the men's doubles yes and who did i say oh i can't remember what yes you did yes you did what a tournament [Music] wonderful performance from the indonesian veterans [Applause] but what an extraordinary finals day morton the two men the two singles both over in double quick like time totally mismatched uh fizzled out yeah it did and then i think the women's doubles was really good in the men's obviously of course really good the first and the last finals absolutely brilliant two finals game the full distance the other three very one-sided affairs well no wonder they're smiling they're known in their home country as the daddies yes because they both have children and they're very often onto the podium as well yeah but i don't think they are they hearing no i'm not sure i haven't seen anything this was the final rally that one there was hesitation well they challenged but it was shown by hawkeye as out and therefore the victory for muhammad s well i think now they have to go down in the record books morton as one of the great men's doubles pairs oh absolutely absolutely they're they are a great player i think they've been it all the time but by winning this is obviously ceiling uh you know getting up at the very top in terms of achievements yeah well while we wait for the for the medal ceremony as i always do i want to know your favorite moments of the world championships yeah i wouldn't say favorite moment this time i i would say that this world championship for me i'll remember to see a lot of new faces coming up which i think that's very nice however i also must say that uh sad to say that taisu ying did not win despite she's been world at number one for such a long time and the same goes for gideon and tsukamoya yeah that i think this championship actually will remind me of that two massive favorites yet again didn't win yeah and of course akane yamaguchi in the number one seed she fell at the first hurdle her first match it's been a world championships of drama an excitement [Music] so to the middle ceremony for the men's novels so [Music] [Applause] came so close in their semi-final against the now champions a year ago they were on top of the podium lee and liu chen [Applause] well the second straight year that a pair from japan has contested the final but the elusive gold medal for japanese players in the men's doubles continues [Music] [Applause] climb on top of the podium a third gold medal and said he won a force on his birthday [Music] and his partner liu cheng [Music] [Music] as indeed it is for the number 12 seeds and kobayashi but the gold medal for a third time it hangs round the neck of mohammed hassan [Applause] won a fourth gold medal [Music] [Applause] this senior grant manager from today will hand over the trophy [Music] so the total trophies presented by mr david walsh senior brand marketing manager of godaddy [Music] [Applause] [Music] managing director of swiss patent so the mascots as well being presented to all the medalists dragons ladies and gentlemen please stand up for the national anthem of indonesia [Music] so [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] so [Music] so [Music] [Applause] once again congratulations well the players will pose with the presenters of the medals and the trophies two pairs from indonesia getting medals for a fifth time in the history of the world championships in the men's doubles discipline [Music] making sure that the twin towers as they're known in the world of badminton the two very tall chinese athletes making sure they're involved as well in this photo call oh let's been a strange world championships in a way as morton was pointing out two top two seeds in the women's singles departing my final stage the number one seeds in the men's doubles departing their very first match and that's nice both indonesian pairs having their photograph taken but as they pose for the photographers the three-time champions we can look back on our finals today and it all started with a repeat of last year's final and it was the same result as last year matsumoto and nagahara are beating fukushima and hirota fukushima and hirota having to settle for a third silver medal and then it was busala benkata sindhu in the women's singles a repeat of the world championship final from two years ago when okuhara won the most magnificent match in an hour and 50 minutes it couldn't have been more of a contrast today because pusalla venkata sindhu won seven and seven in just 37 minutes and won the gold medal on her mother's birthday kento momoto the defending champion in the men's singles uh quite simply from two six down in the opening game was in a different class to anna's and thompson and therefore mamalta becomes the fourth player to win two consecutive men's singles titles at world championships only 38 minutes for that one then it was mixed doubles in the quickest final of the day with the defending champions shengshi way and wang yashyong winning their second consecutive gold medal uh against uh who created history by being the first pair from thailand to contest a doubles final at the world championships and as we've just seen in the men's doubles muhammad assan and hendra setia1 winning a third world championship gold medal as a pair and for the birthday boy hendra setia won 35 today it was a fourth gold medal in total coming through 21-15 in the deciding game well it's been a wonderful week here in basel certainly from morton frost myself jill clark and in fact the entire team here in basel we hope for your company again very soon but in the meantime take care bye-bye [Music] [Applause] [Music] so you
