this video is sponsored by ag1 hey guys welcome back to my channel I'm Alexandra and you're watching a very special four-part Series where I make over a subscriber entire apartment room by room come along for this epic adventure with Team a and I as we make this subscribers rental feel like home welcome to the show everybody this is exactly what I had in my head sorry I oh my no it's all happening I'm out I'm quitting we made it to the end come on in my God roll the music sound [Music] man today is episode three of the dream apartment makeover for the deserving viewer Kate so far we've made over like the first front of the house the living room and the office and today we're tackling this kitchen which really needs a lot of love it's outdated the cabinets have not been painted in a very long time you can tell because they're kind of yellowing and this kitchen is quite substantial in size so I'm a little bit nervous about how we're going to pull this all together it's going to be a lot of work I'm getting ahead of myself let's take it back to the call that I had with Kate a few weeks ago and talk through how her kitchen's functioning for her what needs changing and what her dream Dre kitchen would look like it's a such a big kitchen which is so great talk me through what's working what's not working I feel like you might have space for like a table in there like maybe that's your dining area so I have a little island in there that like collapses so it's just like a little like Square table and then has the two chairs I don't really like eat on it ever I use it as like my baking area got it b a lot of Pies so the space to like roll out dough is helpful so more prep space would be good I'm thinking like maybe a bigger island in the middle of the kitchen so you can walk around it you can use that as your prep space maybe you can sit at it sometimes yeah the cabinets constantly fall off like the hinges are breaking oh my God okay I have one friend she's quite handy and she comes over and like fixes my cabinets for me all the time we're going to fix it permanently so you don't ever have to worry about that on the side there's like bookshelves almost oh cool and like radiator kind of thing so I don't know I feel like there's a lot of like room to kind of do something pretty cool in there is there anything else you can think of that you would really need in the kitchen or is it more just aesthetic I think it might just be aesthetic the floors are kind of beat up but I mean yeah I'm trying to figure out what we can do in there oh and the fan can the fan come down oh yeah cuz it it needs to go yes okay can you just talk through your dream kitchen space the color on the cabinets would be really fun like a playful kitchen like it doesn't need to be just like white I really did love like the Dakota Johnson I you were gonna say that yeah because she has like cool like greens and like things worked in right I love green I'm definitely not afraid of like colors and prints I hear your vision I also think like if we're going very neutral with the rest of the space the kitchen can be that pop of fun and and playfulness I mean like there's really nothing I've seen you do that I didn't like so it's like really thanks whatever you want to do okay I think that's it from me I'll meet you in person on reveal day which is so wild it is yeah that's wild okay bye Kate's inspo is filled with green and pink cues pattern She's Not Afraid of color so I really want to make this kitchen stand out I want to go with the Bold color that we didn't use in the living room and kind of Nod towards the office with that bold pattern in the wallpaper here's what I'm thinking for the design the floor has got to be changed we need to upgrade it the tile is feeling really cold I want to bring in a black pattern tile obviously make it peel and stick with some kind of beautiful pattern on it for the backs Splash that's where I want to bring in the muted pink tones that Kate loves so much and go with a pattern that contrasts the floor tile but at the same time really works together make it like eclectic you know for the cabinets we are going two-toned but using one color so in this case we're going green we're going to go dark on the bottom light on the top I think it's going to be really impactful while still keeping in those soft muted tones I really struggled with the big kind of open space in this kitchen you have her actual appliances and countertop kind of like sandwiched in an l- shape in the corner but what do we do with the rest of this space we need to bring in an island preferably something on casters so it can move to give Kate more prep space but also a place to sit and eat dinner I am so excited to to get started on this makeover let's get into it there has been so much prep work going on behind the scenes to get this 2 we makeover underway Graham has been working really hard in the workshop building all the things I have been up here with Atlanta and the team getting all the logistics and design sorted so we have been implementing ag1 as a team to combat stress and just give us energy and prep for this supply of AG vitamin D3 plus K2 plus five ag1 travel packs with your first purchase of ag1 okay let's get back to work to prep these cabinet doors need to be painted so Graham and Dave are in Kate's apartment they are taking the cabinets off and back to the workshop while they were painting in the workshop Jay Davis came in and painted Kate's entire apartment for us there is nothing like a fresh coat of white paint especially when you're moving into an outdated apartment or a new space a new home the J Davis team does such an amazing job so if you're looking for thorough painters who walk you through every single step of the way make sure you reach out to them all of their links are down below now that the doors are back at the workshop Graham and Dave are scrubbing them down with dish soap and water to get any kitchen grease or Gunk off the doors if you don't do this the paint is not going to stick to the cupboards properly it's going to peel and there's going to be bumps so clean your cabinets and do so thoroughly Now Dave and Graham are painting the cupboard doors with two coats of primer FOH and ball provided a mid-tone primer and a dark tone primer for the two different shades of green so that you don't need to paint as many coats Graham and Dave are pre-drilling some small holes in the top or the bottom of the cupboard doors and attaching a small cup hook to to each door so that they can hang the doors out of the way with coat hangers to dry for the tops we're going with ball greens and for the bottoms we're going with Beverly both Colors by phoh [Music] ball welcome to the kitchen makeover we have actually been working before the camera started rolling scrubbing the kitchen down getting all the grease and grime off the cabinets so we can paint pain thumb we've been shooting for 4 days already this makeover it's a large one I know it's going to be really rewarding at the end but we're all feeling it so before we go any further before we start painting the cabinets we're going to have some ag1 as a team so I brought the travel packs to set how convenient are these guys I feel like this is going to be a new routine also I can't lie I'm kind of loving that my initials are on the bottle it's like you're playing salsa music I need this SN Cheers Cheers Cheers I pineapple oh Jesus that's actually very tasty so gram and I are going to take the hood down it's really old it's really outdated I don't think there's even a filter in it we're going to replace it later on in the makeover an easy change to make a big visual difference in a space oh my what are those hroes no I'm out I'm quitting I'm quitting [Music] I oh Jesus oh that is gnarly oh cool the good news is that these cockroaches are dead these are remnants of clearly an extermination probably multiple years ago Kate does not have cockroaches in her apartment there's no cause for concern we're in Old Toronto homes you never know what you're going to find and guys we see a lot of stuff so this was just an interesting warning okay we're going to start fresh and when I say start fresh I mean we're literally starting fresh with some primer on the cabinets we're going to get these primed and painted so it looks brand new in here so primer is dry I'm going to start on the top of the cabinets painting them the light green and are you going to paint the bottoms I can do bottom [Music] okay we're painting the rad cover the same color as the bottom cabinet this beautiful dark green we are doing multiple coats to get the greenest of green color while we wait for the coats to dry Graham and I are going to install some doors onto this door frame you're not going to be able to see cuz it's pitch black and there's no light but the stairwell goes down into another unit so Kate's not walking up and down the stairs it's actually where she keeps olives litter box which I think is so clever and she's put a curtain up here to divide the space we're actually going to add doors with a little cat door for Olive to get in and out so let's roll Graham Cam and take a look at how this dii can play gram found these Louver doors on the sidewalk near our office every time gr do you buy [Music] anything almost at my limit with like some of the things he WR you know what before we actually start talking about these closet doors I would really encourage you to sign up for our membership gram and I have our own little show it kind of feels like a podcast once a month for $4.99 four members and we talked about this very stairwell that we're trying to block off that's all I'm going to say there was a lot of drama there was a lot of behindth scen stories I would encourage you to go watch for the arched cat door Graham is tracing a paint cam on a scrap piece of a/ in MDF and using a speed square to draw the sides of the arch he's cutting out the arch doors with a jigsaw and then sanding them down with a spindle sander he's rounding the edges with a router and a roundover bit and sanding everything with a 60 and 150 grit sandpaper using the arch as a stencil he's tracing it onto the Louver door he's cutting out the arch shape from the Louver door keeping track of the little pieces that would have to go back in place using wood glue and a broad nailer he's gluing the pieces back into the door and securing the arch in place he's priming the MDF and got it ready for paint Graham is now using a paint sprayer and three coats of ball green by Fon ball using a paint sprayer is going to allow him to get into all the nooks and crannies and between the lvas for the cat saloon doors yes the cat Saloon balloon doors Graham is tracing the arch onto a scrap piece of a/4 in plywood he's sketching out the shape of the doors using a pencil he's cutting out the door using a jigsaw and sanding everything down using a spindle sander and a tabletop Bel sander he's staining the plywood doors using some English Chestnut stain and gluing a piece of cane webbing onto the backs side of each door for the hinges Graham is using a continuous piano hinge and is making them a bit smaller in size cat size he's drilling some holes in the hinges so that the glue would have something to grab onto now he's attaching the hinge to the doors and the arch using an oscillating multi-tool to cut out a curf in the material so that the hinge is sliding into the Notch and glued in place the cat Saloon door yeah like excuse me I want be a cat so I can cled this SL oh I got to I got to use bathroom no problem gr is also adding a piece of trim to the top we're going to paint this the same we as the door trim so it kind of looks all built in I just didn't give myself enough space for both hinges so I to take a little Slither off each one 5 minutes later so we're back gr cut the doors down we're going to mount them and then we're going to paint the side where he trimmed and he did it all in 5 minutes so cute yay oh oh the house is like on a slant basically so it's not level the doors aren't lining up we're going to have to cheat one of them up to make them look like they're at the same height o baby that's nice okay that was a big day how are we feeling team only one more room after this what a day cockroaches in the morning tea time at night tea time at night I was like I don't have anything for you bye see you bye hi guys it's the next day and the paint looks so good it's dried really nicely I'm loving the twoone we we are going to start with peel and stick flooring I'm so thrilled about this because these floors have got to go we're using wall pops which we've used before in an entryway we made over and I really like this product because they're a little thicker so we're going to be installing basically like a floating floor that is removable this is the tile the pattern it's going to look so good against the Green before we start installing gram and I have to clean the floor with isopropyl isopo yeah we call it isop poo but it's is isopropyl mhm isopo isopropyl isopo isop isopropyl are you guys okay so we're using isoo isopropyl to clean the floor you want to make sure there's no dirt there's no Grime like nothing which is why we're using the alcohol because then these will stick much better so let's get cleaning on our hands and freaking knees my cute outfit it is cute well it's going to get destroyed Amanda is really good today too Amanda looks fantastic today I'm in my jeno era did you smell that I a popo okay so this is the kind of stuff we want to make sure we're removing and that's why we're using Isa popo just Grime like oil or dirt or like anything sticky that builds up in a kitchen over time if anything is over the tiles like this the peel and stick tiles won't stick properly okay so we made a little Mark with pencil to Mark the center of the room and I'm going to put my first tile down there you're probably wondering why is there dirt on the floor since you just cleaned it with isce of poo they're just chips in the floor we are starting in the center of the room because we want the pattern of the floor to be centered Your Instinct might be to start in a corner or like on the edge of the floor but you want to start in the center and work your way out we want to make sure this one is completely straight because if not all the other tiles we put down aren't going to be and now the great thing is that we just line it up to the tile we just put down this door has a hard time opening right now because it's rubbing up against the existing floor tile so it definitely isn't going to open when we add this tile cuz it's going to add a bit of thickness so Graham is going to shave down a bit of the bottom of the door door so that it opens well for Kate with these tiles or without but we're going to do that tomorrow probably there'll just be a blank Gap that's why we're continuing the same process for the entire floor and to be honest you guys this is actually proving to be a lot easier than I anticipated can you show the viewers how you measured like how do you know where to cut yeah instead of using like a tape measure to like measure the distance and stuff right like we want the the end here to be here it's like kind of hard to measure flip it over and you make a mark where it meets this that's so and then you grab like a strong straight edge of some sort like a metal ruler or a piece of wood or something and you're going to cut where the two marks meet that's so easy and instead of going like really hard one pass don't want the the knife to jump and stab yourself so you're just going to do like light scoring motions and you don't need to do too many because these are kind of like designed to break so good and then once it's broken you fold it back and you have a nice crisp Factory so great like line and then you stick it nice nice you just always want to make your pencil marks the exact same so it's like if you cut that pencil mark off or if you cut to the left of the pencil Mark or to the right of the pencil Mark just do it every single time so that you have the exact same Gap [Music] perfect we move the fridge and the stove out and we're actually putting the tiles underneath we really want to make this like a professional install so it looks clean and [Music] seamless I just want to say if I can do this and make these these Cuts you at home can too feeling really proud I probably said this earlier but there can be 100 people 100 people 100 people in the room and 99 99 99 don't believe in you and just one does Just One Believes and it can change everything changes your whole life and it can change your whole [Music] life Okay so we've left that part untied as I mentioned because tomorrow Graham has to get his tool to plane the door you said plane the door plan the door yeah I have to get a planer she knows what she's talking about whoa also I made the executive decision not to tile over the trim here and I want to show you why because these tiles always look more realistic if you're going to butt them up against a lip of some sort or putting a trim piece over top so I've decided not to tile this because we would have had to do this Edge and it wouldn't have looked seamless we would have had to make a lot of cut Cuts so I just left it like this and I think it works cuz this isn't the same as the tile that was here before it looks like a nice little piece of sandstone so tipe of sedimentary rock of some sort yeah type of sedimentary rock of some sort I think it looks fantastic in here so we're moving on to another peel and stick product peel and stick backsplash it's from surface graphics on Etsy we've never used this shop before and their patterns are beautiful before we start actually sticking any of the panels down Graham and I are going to install a piece of hardboard to the back of here because there's no tile just a reminder you can't put a peel and stick product over painted drywall it'll just lift all the paint up when you try to remove it so we're going to put a panel here and tile on top of that we're cleaning the original backsplash tiles with isopropyl alcohol just like we did for the floor before install the backsplash has the same taupe color as the the accent reading Nook in the living room I love how all the colors are being tied together room to room I really love how you can see the original tile texture underneath these it makes the peel and stick look really real Graham is now cutting all the excess tile with utility knife okay so another tip I have for peel and stick backslash is to use silicone along the edges this is not only going to protect prot the peeling stick from moisture getting underneath it but it is going to make it look seamless make it look like it was always there and cover any like jaggedy edges that may have occurred when you were cutting so let's get the hood fan up gosh I just had a flashback to taking it down oh my I'm quitting we're replacing Kate's old grimy yellow hood with a new white one from home Herber we also got Kate a new filter for this hood fan so it's the right one to catch all the grease the grease was just flying everywhere now her cabinets are going to stay clean hopefully for a very long time it's a fan it's a light now we're adding in some cane webbing doors just like we did in the living room to cover this rad in the kitchen the cane for all these Brad doors in Kate's apartment is from HH Perkins I love how they have so many different cane webbing weaves to choose from and they were so lovely to work with a family-owned business so Kate has this beautiful door here lots of window light we don't want to get rid of the light but we want to give her some privacy so I am going to install this just translucent film you can buy this from the hardware store or on Amazon it's really inexpensive really easy to install and I'm going to do it on the door window you want to make sure you have a spray bottle with water and you just want to Spritz it all over the window and then this film comes with like some sort of backing so we want to peel that off and it's just like installing wallpaper because apparently all I did today was installing peeling stick products Kate's neighbors walk past this window often so we wanted to give her some privacy and this does the trick on a budget that's done that was easy we're also going to be adding something to this window but I think we're going to do that tomorrow today was a big day lots of peel and stick it's looking so good in here tomorrow we're finishing this space off see you then okay so today is the day where we pulled this kitchen together the first thing we're starting with is planing down the door Graham's going to do that with a special tool he has a planer she knows what she's talking about so that it opens cuz right now that made my heart stop gra got it ready to go um but as as you could have seen yesterday it just it doesn't open that's right we should okay that could have been [Music] bad look at this perfect okay so that means that we can keep installing these last four tiles and then we can move on to other things so next up we are doing cabinet fronts I'm a little scared I think it's going to take a while but it's going to look incredible Graham atanta and I are working together to get these kitchen cabinet fronts reinstalled there's a lot of them there's a lot of hinges so we're working together to make this happen so I think the next DIY we're bringing into this space might be one of my favorites I had this idea of bringing like a harvest table into this kitchen but make it like an island and of course Graham made that Vision come to life this is so cool and everyone needs to do this DIY I was seeing if we could Thrift the perfect kitchen table top but Graham actually ended up finding one and this is an old Ikea kitchen top and we're going to repurpose this since this is a dining table top and not a smaller kitchen island Graham needs to cut down the tabletop to the dimensions we need so it's not going to take up too much space in Kate's Kitchen he's cutting off all the sides using a table saw and rounding the edges of the table he's sanding everything down using a 60 then 150 then 220 grit sandpaper until it's silky smooth now it's time to connect the legs to the tabletop top Graham saved the table frame and kind of rejigged it to fit the smaller table and to fit the larger legs that we had sourced he's cutting down the frame using a miter saw and gluing everything together using wood glue and Broad Nails he's now gluing the frame to the bottom of the table using wood glue and screws Graham actually started by staining the wood and it was just way too orange for my liking so to fix this Graham is standing down the table once more and trying to bleach the wood using liquid bleach there's actually products out there made specifically for bleaching wood and they work really well but we were in a bit of a pinch so we tried using regular bleach and it totally worked he's now sealing the tabletop and the wooden legs with a semi gloss lacquer sanding slightly in between the second and third coats so this is the top I'm screaming crying throwing out I've also never seen this DIY like altogether I'm so excited I family legs from osbor wood I've been seeing a lot of legs like this you can actually buy as like individual pieces and then build out your own tabletop which is really really cool I wanted this island to be able to move around the space so we are going to put casters on we're just waiting for a special tool from Milena so in the meantime let's flip it over what this is so good gram yeah really what the freak I had always thought that maybe the island would be this way but I actually think it makes more sense this way cuz when I eventually put the stools down the stools will fill this space so once we have the casters on I can move it around but I did want to put it on Caster so Kate could like move it closer to the counter if she wanted to prep or then move it away from the counter if she wanted to have people over we're going to revisit this in the meantime let's put up some curtains these curtains are actually tablecloths they're from Soo living and I flipped it over a little bit and then clipped it at the top so it gives it like a kind of Cafe curtain Vibe so let's hang them like absolutely gorgeous kisses the floor since this kitchen does feel like a substantial full room I thought curtains would work really nicely in here they're not by the oven they're not by the stove top they're also really easy for Kate to take off the curtain rod and throw in the wash we also ended up using an Ikea shade in the window as well so if the curtains don't work out for Kate she has this as a backup okay so Elena's back she took over steaming and I'm going to get the casters on this island okay ha's going up flippity FP goody [Music] day woo okay amazing they also lock and this is really sturdy so I love how she has a lot of different options she can move it she can bring closer to prep this is so great K hang the most beautiful beautiful flush mount from Mitzy of course we used this style of light from mity in my parents living room makeover if you guys remember the sconces and my dad just like kept commenting about what great quality like the glass was he like wouldn't stop talking about it it's just such amazing qu like feel how heavy these are this is so beautiful finally it's knob time knob time these are from v2v I'm adding poles to the drawers to contrast the knobs on the doors I love using a mix of knobs and poles in a kitchen we have gold nail polish and I'm just going to paint over the silver finally I'm adding handles to these closet doors I love how like Big And Chunky they are they're such a statement so while I was finishing off the knobs Graham hung Kate's existing shelves we changed the brackets to make them look a little elevated hot tip if you have shelves that are just old that you're sick of looking at try and change the brackets before you get rid of them entirely I'm going to style these in a minute can't wait for a shelfie moment but for now let's move on to stools I wanted to get Kate stool that didn't have a back so that she could easily slide them under the island these are really comfy and like what a great place to work we just made over her office so obviously she has a beautiful office to work in but she can eat dinner here and these are really comfy I'm just I'm in love with this island i w so I'm not going to lie this makeover felt like a dooy and I can't believe that I'm saying we're finally at the finishing touches roll the music sound man hanging this beautiful print by vinka halum I need one of these in my kitchen I'm styling the Shelf starting with leaning this art print of apples placing these wooden salt and pepper shakers in front placing some of Kate's beautiful mugs here a canister of tea a faux plant leaning some cookbooks and adding a decorative jar and a candle I love a shelf that is functional but also really stylish placing Kate's mixer on the counter it works so well leading a few of her cutting boards again layers we love them placing down this thrifted lemon canister adding a kettle and some utensils to the stove hanging two tea towels side by side placing some more of Kate's mugs we want to display these they're gorgeous placing soap and a little dish brush on the sink leaning an art print setting down a fruit bowl and some [Music] peaches hanging my ten andco checkered tea towel placing a kitchen mat down for extra Comfort finally placing this decorative garbage can on the ground yes garbage can can be beautiful remember what this kitchen looked like before floors were out dated the cabinets were like yellowing in desperate need of a Fresh coat of paint it really needed a Refresh on the count of three 1 2 [Music] 3 [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] this was probably one of the most challenging makeovers we've ever done but it actually might be one of my favorites I cannot wait to show Kate her new kitchen speaking
