[Music] hey everyone this is lindy i'm russell we are creating a bathroom from nothing nothing this video is sponsored by valspar canada and they'll be supplying all the paint for this project for this extreme bathroom renovation we're collaborating with christina from thediymommy.com on her channel she is showing another bathroom renovation today and i know hers is gonna be amazing we are both gonna be answering some of the same questions and going through some of our budgets and design plans and details like that so it's gonna be really interesting to compare the two projects and i hope you get a chance to watch both videos this is the corner we're renovating this was once our kids room but now we're taking it back as our bedroom because it's the biggest room and the easiest one to add an ensuite to which we think will add some value to our house and before we jump into the renault we wanted to answer a few quick questions so what is our budget for this project i mean because we want it to be a nice looking space i think under 5 000 is reasonable based on us doing all the labor yeah so we'll do all the work what's our timeline to complete it i mean a whole year i think three and a half years we have about three and a half weeks before we want this video on youtube so if you're watching this hopefully we did it yeah so because we're creating a bathroom where there isn't one there's plenty of design and renovation challenges in here so there's no plumbing on this side of the house so i actually have to our washroom is on the other side of the hallway so i have to steal or grab all this the water um drainage and i have to figure out hvac for the vent um for this space so design wise space is the biggest challenge for me this is the smallest bathroom ever the challenge is just designing in a really small space still making it impactful design wise and beautiful and making it feel bright enough even though there's a small space with no natural light so who's most likely to freak out about our budget going over me right here i mean there's been discussions already about some of the design things she wants to do expensive tile expensive wall choices uh who's gonna freak out about installs going badly just her with timeline they'll be fine i'll get it done no you'll freak out about something not going right though yeah but you'll if it's not installing properly everything gets installed properly yeah he will freak out with that that's not me timeline and deadline i will get it done it will be done but i might have to like we have one more day in my schedule for this and i'm like it's nap time we can we are excited to get started all we have done so far is a hole in the wall and we built this out with a previous renault in the house when we planned the space yeah so now we're ready to actually tear into this build some new walls and hopefully in a few weeks we have a new bathroom yeah it's literally day two of renovations and we have an issue and i mean we should have looked at this i drew stuff out with autocad but it's different when you start laying things out so you need 30 inches of clearance finished well to finish well in the toilet i'm gonna have 27 so that's not to code yeah this is a two by six wall so i can and it's not load bearing so i can cut this down i can i'm going to steal three inches out of here and then i'll have exactly 30 inches finished to finish drywall it's just it's still small but at least it's a small bathroom and it's either that or no toilet this is coming out and then the whole wall is gonna get put along this line on the floor here so even though this closet is a whole nother renovation we have to do some planning we have to do some planning now because we need to build this whole wall first and then i'm gonna i think i'm probably gonna get someone in for drywall um and then they can deal with all the patching and build this wall at the same time so the first thing russell did is spend a bunch of time demoing the existing space and framing out new walls for our closet and new ensuite [Music] this is where the ensuite is at we are trying to get all of the plumbing and electrical done in time to have everything drywalled um we have a drywaller coming in a couple of days because that is our least favorite part of renovating and hopefully they can get it done faster than we would be able to this is going to be the shower this is going to be the toilet and then over here is going to be the vanity and we already have like a spot boxed out for the mirror and some plumbing for the faucet and that kind of stuff [Music] so we finished up the hvac electrical and plumbing so we are all ready for the drywaller to board up the walls and russell installed our curbless shower pan so that we would be ready for the shower as well we have drywall up we have a wall so super excited about that and it's actually starting to look like a little bathroom now because this is such a small bathroom and like really limited in storage we have these couple of drawers in the vanity but we also added these little niches just to have a little bit of extra places to put stuff because it has a small countertop as well and then also around an electrical outlet here so that we will be able to plug in our electric toothbrushes and have them sit on here or you know my hair dryer or whatever um i need so i need to get all the shower board up and then i need to see all this with caulking there's drywall here um i'm gonna wipe some of this down there's really not gonna be any water here but we needed to put a corner bead on here just so that we can finish this wall nicely and then the tile will go up to here at the jtreamer eltrim um [Music] hey guys i have some of our tile and paint choices for the bathroom here so i was going to show you quickly we are working with valspar so we were looking through their paint deck but what we decided to do is a really clean white color we're actually going with this ultra white from valspar it's a really nice clean white color that i think it's going to look really nice with the tile because the bathroom is so small i want to keep it as bright as possible so that's why i'm going with that pink color and here are the tiles we're going with my favorite is this large format 3d tile i don't know how well you guys can see it does have dimension to it and i am really excited to see how this is going to look on all the walls in our shower i think it's going to be a really beautiful way to add a kind of texture and pattern without putting a busy mosaic on the wall or something then our floor tile is going to be this mosaic it's actually a glass towel which is a little bit trickier to cut but i have full faith in russell this is what we're going with i think the two of them together are gonna look really sharp and i'm really excited about this pattern because i think it's gonna be beautiful once we had all of the drywall in place and the shower boarded up we were finally ready to get some primer and paint up on these walls we used a stain blocking primer from valspar and then we used their valspar reserve interior paint in a beautiful satin finish for the bathroom the ultra white color from valspar immediately brightened up the space so i knew it was the right decision for this windowless bathroom to have a beautiful bright paint color once the paint had dried we were ready to start tiling beginning with that glass mosaic on the floors [Music] after the tiles were set we used a black epoxy grout on the floors and then moved on to the wall tiles this is exactly where our one and only timeline issue came up as soon as we started putting tile up on this wall we realized we were not gonna have enough tile we had special ordered this tile and miscalculated and now we had to wait a few weeks to get new tile so we asked the diy mummy if we could push our video dates back she graciously agreed and now our renovation turned from three and a half weeks into six weeks but as soon as that new tile arrived we were able to start tiling the shower and that was a great day once the tile was up we finished up the grouting and the silicone in the shower and then we got started on our three big diy projects for this bathroom so our vanity is installed now this would be where it's going to live we have blocking that's holding the countertop up so this is everything's final position and now we know what we can do for building it in so that it looks like it's 100 custom to the space so we're going to put filler panels on the side on the top so we raise this vanity counter height a little bit because we have an undermount sink and we're trying to minimize how much the sink impacts our drawer um so yeah we're going to have three filler pieces one that goes from here one that goes across and then one that goes in here we're gonna build new custom fronts that will get attached to these little wood blocks that we put in on the side and then the custom fronts will come full width and look when they're closed that it's 100 center to the space because we found this in the as is this is still faster and cheaper than trying to build one ourself and i think it's going to give it a really nice look we started by cutting the new faces for our vanity out of pine board and then russell used his router to create a really unique design on the front of the doors [Music] once the paint was all dry we installed the drawer fronts on our ikea cabinet making sure that all the ridges were perfectly lined up our second big diy in this space was to make some floating shelves to go on the wall behind the toilet and we had some scrap maple plywood lying around so we cut those down for the shelves [Music] our third and final big diy of this space was to put some custom wood flats on the shower in our ceiling to be honest when we started this we weren't sure how it was going to work or if it was going to work at all but we went for it starting by cutting all of the wood down into strips we stained all of the wood slats and then gave them several coats of a big heavy duty varnish on all six sides so that they would be well protected we painted the whole ceiling with some leftover black paint because we wanted any space between the slots to look really dark and then attached all of the pieces to the ceiling if you guys are interested in tutorials for any of these three diys please let us know in the comments we have filmed everything and we want to show them to you if it's something you guys are going to be interested in we're in the home stretch of this reno i can't believe we've been working so hard the last couple days to get it done in time and all we have to do now is install pocket doors install a countertop and then a couple little plumbing and diy details to finish off the space and we're done so hopefully this comes together we have one more day and then i have to edit this video so fingers crossed we can get it all done [Music] today we did some last minute paint touch-ups anywhere that we had nicked or scratched or drawn on the walls for our installs and once the paint was dry we were ready to style the space [Music] [Music] as a reminder here's what this space looked like when we started a couple weeks ago and here's what it looks like now [Music] [Applause] [Music] i am absolutely obsessed with how this vanity turned out i love the black and i love the texture and i think it looks so beautiful in this space with all of these black accessories we really maximized storage as best we could in here with that medicine cabinet in the wall and the niches in the side and i'm really happy with how the whole space came together [Music] the ceiling in the shower is such a feature of this room it really gives it a spa like vibe and i love the textured tile all throughout this shower [Music] [Music] if you watched last week's video then you already know that we got a new glowforge machine and i tested it out this week cutting leather and acrylic for that little towel holder this acrylic picture frame and this leather planter holder i'm obsessed with all three of these diys and i'll be showing you next week how i made them all space is done yay what did you guys think of our brand new bathroom it's like the smallest ensuite ever but it's so functional we are really happy super proud of how this all came together um did we stay on timeline no no because we missed messer measured tile because somebody wanted it's not my fault because somebody wanted special order if we would have just bought the tile at that without the store fine worth it worth it and were we on budget no and again that's all for monday's phone that's also the fault of the special order tile um here's a kind of breakdown of what our budget looked like so yes we went over budget a little bit there's a couple things that we decided to splurge on including um my vanity mirror which is the nicest medicine cabinet i thought you're going to say the expensive not the most expensive it's just the nicest so and we added heated flooring yeah which was his fault so that's her so really for this space and what we spent and what it looks like i think we did really well agreed is there anything about the space you would change now that it's done there's nothing i would have changed i like the design i like i mean maybe i wouldn't have done special order tile i still would have said it it looks really good um it just sucks with the timeline and what's your favorite feature of the space that 16 inch rain can i like showers my favorite feature is the new vanity i am obsessed with it i'm obsessed with how the drawer friends turned out i think it's amazing and we did this video collaboration with christina the diy mummy and her husband shawn they finished their bathroom if you haven't seen their video yet check it out they're also going to give updates on their budget and their timeline and their challenges so you're not going to want to miss it yeah i mean christina does amazing design and shawn does amazing
