hi guys welcome or welcome back to my channel today i'm excited to show you how i transformed this bathroom into an amazing upgraded bathroom for under 300 this is my kids slash guest bath that i have been meaning to get around to for the past year so here are some of the before images stick around to see how i transformed this build a great bathroom for under 300 i completely did everything myself using easy to use tools and just a little bit of elbow grease the first thing i did was i started by covering with the bathroom cabinet i am using a lightweight plastic that is easy to cut and tape garbage bags also work then i cover up the mirrors and the toilet pretty much any surfaces that i didn't want paint to splatter on paint splatters all over the place when being rolled onto the wall so i wanted to make sure everything was covered just to note i'm also redoing my floors but if you do decide to do your own diy and not do the floors be sure to cover those up as well trust me i've learned the hard way when doing other rooms next i'm removing the light switch covers tissue holder towel ring the bath towel hooks the shower curtain hooks any of the bathroom accessories and i just put everything in a clear ziploc bag so i don't lose any of the screws or pieces it does take time to prep and cover up everything but trust me it's so worth it in the end because it's so much less cleanup i was so excited to get started that i almost forgot i was going to be doing something else entirely with this wall so i am moving on to the other side where i'm going to be starting to paint this entire bathroom i am using the roller pack that i got from home depot which was about 11 and it comes with two roller covers a wire frame for the roller a two inch angle brush a metal tray a tray liner and even a three inch trim roller with the frame i mean it's a really good buy i always buy these when i'm gonna start a new project i love i don't see them because they're so cheap and i just throw them out when i'm done painting and i just pick up a new one when i'm working on a new project i'm not a fan of this beige color in this bathroom at all i think it makes everything look kind of yellow it's just not my cup of tea i do prefer cooler tones so that's why i'm gonna be using this super light gray color i'm using paint from the bare line sold exclusively at home depot and the color is called white pepper the white pepper color is extremely light gray and it actually looks white when it's first being rolled onto the wall but it's not when it's next to a white color you can see the difference when i finish this bathroom you'll see exactly how light gray it is and what i'm talking about i did not take the ceiling with the famous blue painters tape because to be honest i'm kind of lazy when it comes to stuff like that so to get into the corners by the ceiling i did invest in a booster brush i feel like it gets into the grooves really well where i'm not painting the ceiling by accident i've done that multiple times with other brushes but this one really gets into the corner so i do recommend the wooster brush the arm is very flexible and i think it's only about three dollars i use this color in the past in a foyer area of a different house where it gets lots of light and it just looks really pretty when we moved into this house i definitely had plans to use the same color for my kid's bathroom because it doesn't have a window but it still offers that same feeling that i was going for i'm glad i'm finally getting around to this project painting and upgrading this bathroom for under 300. the paint i'm using is a satin finish and i decided to go with the satin finish because the coverage is really good for bathrooms it does have a slight sheen to it but it's not super glossy looking another thing to know is that i'm not using a primer the bear ultra it comes with paint and primer one the actual name is called bear ultra stain blocking paint and primer in one i think for the price this line offers really good coverage a large color selection and i just like the quality of the paint a lot now that the paint on the wall is finished i'm moving on to the cabinets and i'm just going to be removing the cabinet doors here i'm prepping the cabinet base to paint first i'm using a half water half vinegar and one teaspoon of dawn detergent as a solution to clean the areas that are going to be painted i'm spraying the surfaces and the scrubbing with the scouring side of the sponge i've used other solutions in the past to prep for a painting and i think this natural solution just works the best it really gets all the grime off i'm also just wiping under the cabinet with comet just so that's clean too i also wet the side panel with the vinegar water solution as well and just wipe down the front again for good measure and now i'm ready to paint i am using bare paint by home depot again but this time i'm using the marquee line because of its durability it's a cabinet right next to the toilet so i wanted to make sure i was able to clean it up as thoroughly as possible and not worry about the paint getting messed up because i am painting over wood i wanted to make sure i got a good coat marquee has one coat technology but i think that applies to walls and not wood but still i wanted to make sure this blue color really showed through by the way this blue color is called inked blue i am using a foam brush from the dollar store actually to apply the paint foam brushes do not leave streak marks like a regular brush does but it's really perfect for furniture projects regardless as i paint i am going over any spots where the wood is showing through and i apply more paint until it's all even for the side panel i am going to be using a foam brush also to apply the paint because this is a wider area the foam brush does not leave an even coat so for the next coat i am going to be using a different type of tool to apply the paint i do let this dry for a few hours and then i come back and apply a couple of coats later on which i do show a little bit later in the video i went down to my dining room to remove the hinges from the cabinet doors i just needed more space and the bathroom was getting kind of tight with all the wet paint and everything so i'm just going to be removing the hinges and screws from the cabinet doors and setting it aside because i am going to be making another diy solution to put them in i'm also going to be removing the doorknobs that i had installed a while back from the cabinet doors as well but those are not going to be going in the solution for the solution i am using my crock pot this solution cleans like a charm i'm simply adding four cups of water doesn't matter what temperature and one fourth cup of dawn dish detergent to the crock pot that is it then i'm just going to be putting the hinges and screws inside the solution i set it to high and then i just put the lid on i leave everything in there until i'm ready to reassemble the cabinet doors so to paint the cabinet doors i am using the same diy solution that i had used in the bathroom vanity which was the vinegar water dish detergent recipe i had used other cleaners in the past and i think this vinegar water solution just works the best i mean i know i said that before but it really takes all the dirt off and it creates more like a drying filling on the cabinet so that the paint can stick better to it and to be honest i really don't think the other cleaners really did any better than this natural solution so here's what i did i just cleaned all three cabinet panels using the scoring part of the sponge really digging in and scrubbing in there to get the crevices and grooves of the cabinet especially the outside of it i just want to mention that if you are planning to paint your cabinets and want to clean them thoroughly do not use brillo or anything like that because if the small particles break into the wood it will rust and eventually show through the paint i am using the wagner flexio 4000 sprayer this combination set came with a large sprayer for covering larger areas and then a smaller 20 ounce cup with the detail nozzle that's the one i'm using so here's my method i start with the inside panel of the cabinet first for the first coat i am going to spray even strokes in the same direction i make sure i got most the wood cover and that's how i determine whether it's a good coat or not i also make sure to get the edges and then i let that dry and then i come back for a second coat it got dark out so i did decide to stop for the day and then just continue to spray the cabinets the next day i did sew the cabinets in my garage and i just bought them back out in the morning after the first coat i took a really fine piece of sandpaper which was like grain 180 and i just lightly sanded down the cabinets and then i'm using something called tack cloth to remove any debris off tack cloth helps get that professional finish in between paint coats it has a sticky film on it which helps to remove any debris so the project really has a nice smooth finish in the end i went back and got the spray gun and sprayed the inside of the cabinet again in total i did do three coats but i did not show each coat because i just felt like it would be repetitive in the video so i waited an hour for the final coat of the inside panel to dry when i went back outside i just touched the paint outside to just ensure that each section was dried and it was i wiped off any debris i flipped over each panel this time i started by lightly sanding the front and then wiping with the tack cloth and that repeated the process for all three panels then i sprayed the fronts again using the same technique i had used on the back just making sure that each had really good coats without any of the wood showing and i just repeat the process for all three panels i waited about a half hour to see if the first coat had dried and when it did i just used a tackle to wipe away any debris um there was a few bugs that have settled on the panel so i just used some fine sandpaper to get it off and just wipe with the tack cloth again and then i just went ahead and sprayed um the three panels again and now let it dry and then i repeat the process one additional time to make sure that the front got three coats of paint as well the hinges had soaked for hours when i came back to them the clear water had turned brown from all the dirt and buildup i tried to angle the camera so you all could see just how official this diy solution is i poured out the yucky water and rinsed with clean water next i scrubbed any remaining residue off of them and just rinsed them off one more time i set them on a paper towel to dry if you are looking for a quick and easy solution to clean your cabinet hinges kitchen cabinets or bathroom cabinet hinges this one is it give it a try so the hinge install i'm just basically doing what i you know did before i'm just reinstalling my hinges that i took off of the cabinets i really just wanted to show you up close how clean the hinges were they look brand new i had dried them off with a paper towel so that i could reinstall them right away i am reinstalling the cabinet doors back onto the bathroom vanity i was so pleased to see how good the cabinet had turned out this blue was just one step up from navy and i was just so pleased to see how the sprayer performed it was just so smooth i am reusing my gold knob hardware i had picked those up from target about a year ago so i am going to reuse those because the gold offsets so beautifully with the almost navy color now i'm taping up the sides and the floor i was on the fence about painting under the trim of the cabinet but i decided to paint it in the end so now i'm just doing a little bit more prep work for that when i painted the first coat of the bathroom vanity i only did one coat on the side panel so now i'm just gonna go over the side panel one more time i did use a bit of sandpaper and tack cloth of course but this time i'm using my secret weapon which is a foam roller brush i go over the side getting an even coat and i just move on to the cabinet trim on the front side of the cabinet it is a piece that is visible and if someone is taking a bath or looking over from the tub i just wanted the bathroom to look completely finished i am using a foam roller brush under here as well and then i'm also using a regular foam brush just to get into the corners and crevices that is hard for the roller brush to get into if you remember in the beginning of the video when i started painting the main wall um i'm actually going to be tiling that entire wall here's how i prep i'm going to be using this anvil cutter which is perfect for a ceramic tile it's only about 22 dollars this is a six inch tile so i mark at the half mark which is three inches i make a dot and then i turn the ruler around to draw line street down the middle with a sharpie don't worry the sharpie does come off with paper towel and water or alcohol there are knobs on the side of this tool to help cut in certain angles but i'm only going to be cutting straight so i'm setting the angle to zero and then tightening the knobs the blade on the cutter is used to scrape the surface of the ceramic tile i scrape back and forth one time then i apply pressure which basically snaps the tile in half so for the tiling i'm using type 1 tile adhesive which i picked up from lowe's i am using a trowel which i got from home depot and then i'm also using 1 8 inch tiling spacers so to begin tiling i apply some tile adhesive to the wall getting started was a little difficult with the bathroom being so tight so i'm actually using a spare subway tile to apply some of the tile adhesive to the wall and then i actually just use the trowel to make the grooves along the wall i'm using um the offset pattern which almost resembles like a brick pattern so i am starting with that half size that i had shown how i cut it in half i'm using the half size in the corner and then i'm going to be using full size tiles for the rest of the row and then the next row will have a full size tile to start along with the rest of the full size tiles on that row i hope that makes sense um when i get to the corners which is hard to see by the toilet i am measuring to get the right size um and then i just keep going from there and here was just a quick preview of the progress that i made for the day i ended up stopping here for day two the next day i start the day by pre-cutting some of those half tiles it just helped me speed up the process a little bit more instead of stopping to cut each time i needed one they were already you know ready for me just like a whole stack of them so i did improve my speed and tiling this wall also i had changed the camera angle to make it a little closer so that um you know you all could see what i was talking about by the offset uh brick pattern with the smaller tile and then the bigger tile right on top so that's exactly how it's supposed to go you know one big one small one big one small um only on the right side of the tile and then the rest should be all the regular size subway tiles it does take a little bit of time to like prep and get into the groove of it but once um you know you're in the groove of it it just kind of goes it was really fun to do this tile project i actually really wanted to do this for a while i had something else in mind originally but i'm glad that i ended up doing the all-white subway tile um and just doing that one wall it just looks really good i was like so happy the way it came out um and my son was really excited too when he saw he's like it looks like bricks mommy so here i just wanted to do a quick preview of what i did and how much more i have to do um with the light gray i was talking about you can already see the light gray how it looks in comparison to the white subway tiles also you can also see how like the subway tiles like sort of transform the bathroom you know with like the simple brick pattern um and the subway tiles are so cheap they are like my favorite thing to use because they're so cheap um for one whole box which has a hundred tiles in it it's only fifteen dollars i also got those from home depot also i wanted to mention that if any of the tile adhesive dropped down onto the subway tiles it's better to wipe it off immediately once the um tile adhesive dries onto the subway tile it's like pain to get off um you have to use like a nylon brush and drill and it's just like not worth it so if you are doing a subway tile project of your own or any tile project of your own you know always just wipe off the adhesive before it dries on there and it's just kind of like a good rule of thumb and here's a quick overview of the tile without the grout yet i'm gonna let this dry a little harder move on to floors and then come back for grouting for the floors i'm using a grecian marble vinyl peel and stick flooring tile i also got this at lowe's i'm starting in the corner to make sure i have a really good measurement to start the bathroom off i'm using a ruler to measure the side and then the corner of the bathroom wall and then i'm just going to use my utility knife to basically make a line down the front of the tile the tile bends pretty easily so it snaps right where the line was etched in at um and then i just peel off the back and i stick it right to the floor because i am sticking right onto the linoleum flooring i did not use any other adhesives i know i've seen other people use other adhesive but because my flooring is in good condition i don't need to do that i do have to say that when i did try to move a tile after i stuck it down it was extremely hard to get up so the adhesive on the back of these are really good next i'm going to cut a tile right in half so that it has an extremely realistic pattern on the floor i'm following the same setup that i did on the other tile just cutting a line down the middle with my utility knife but i'm also going to make a line at the back so i can use just one side of the vinyl tile i like this project with the peel and stick because there was so much less mess than some of the other tiles that i've done in the past and it was super easy to install here i am installing another piece that i cut out to fit perfectly along the trim and here is another quick look at the floors here i am putting the grout into the grooves of the subway tiles i know that we're supposed to use a special tool but i actually prefer to use my hands and a glove i feel like i have way more control over where the grout goes um and especially if i'm trying to get into the grooves i just feel like i have way more handle on it i forgot to mention that i did remove all the house pieces from the grooves and place them in a plastic baggie they are reusable and i can get maybe one or two more uses out of them before i toss them into the garbage i am using bright white grout from home depot it actually says bright white grout but the grout definitely dries the shade darker than on the label i was completely fine with that because i wanted the towels to show through anyway after i've applied a good amount of grout i go and get a grout sponge to wipe the grout away i have a home depot bucket sitting in my tub but um i'm actually using that bucket to rinse off the sponge and wipe the tiles off after i wipe the tiles off i do go into the grooves of the towels to make sure that the grout is in set there is a tool for this but i'm actually just using my finger to trace along the spaces all the way across up and down and just making sure that the grout is inset and not spread out on top of the tiles so grouting does take a while to do but it is worth it in the end i just make sure i'm doing a good job of application so that it's less clean up for me in the end um that's why i have the bucket sitting right there and just wiping it off as i go um it's also important to note that grout does leave a haze sometimes so it is important to just make sure that you clean it within a couple days or it will leave like a hazy residue on top of your towels and you don't want that so at the one more go of wiping down the tiles i'm actually ready to use the ceramic tile grout i'm just using that actually it's a ceramic tile caulk sorry about that i am just using it in the corners of the walls just to make sure that all the grooves and edges are sealed in just making sure any holes that i miss with the grout um that is covered you know from the top to the bottom and just all the way in the corners and then i'm just using it just like you would use regular grout just taking my finger and just wiping it so that it has a smooth groove in it so now i'm ready to start putting the bathroom back together i'm just i'm gonna install the hand towel bar back then i'm gonna add the outlet covers the light switch covers um the towel hooks and just any of the bathroom accessories that i've unscrewed i'm just putting back into the bathroom to get ready i called it quits for the night after installing some of the bathroom accessories so now i'm just gonna do the floor um grout for the floor grout i did decide to use a ceramic towel adhesive i chose this because i thought it would be way less mess into you know to get into the tile grooves and easier clean up it was less mess in application it was quick and easy to use the the caulk gun but in retrospect i definitely should have used regular grout um i'm doing a voiceover a few days later and it's been a few days but i'm still noticing that there's a few spots on the floor that i didn't get to clean up as good um so i'm still like wiping it up and everything this is silicone base and it is a bit thicker than regular grout if i do this in my bathroom i am considering to go with the traditional grout because of the texture but i did like using this one because of the caulk gun and just like it was less mess overall the caulk is good because it is vinyl and having in in the tube i feel like it's less messy and less clean up afterward i actually was in home depot the other day or lows i forget which one it was but i noticed that i should have used vinyl tile grout in general because these are vinyl tile um i haven't had a problem with the tiles at all they still look really good so i'm so happy with my decision and i still think that it's okay i am going in and getting into some of the grooves and just kind of reapplying as i go along so i'm not gonna lie when i first laid down the tile the peel and stick um tile in the bathroom um i was like on the fence i liked it but i wasn't sure if i wanted to do it in my own bathroom but literally after i added the grout i mean my opinion changed 100 there's no going back i'm actually planning on it now i love doing the peeling stick because it's so less messy and i just love that it looks like real tile after you add the grout so add in the grout in it is recommended you don't have to add the grout because some of them are groutable some of them are not but i chose one that was gradable and i mean it just like changes the whole vibe of the space so here i am just applying some of the last final touches i didn't move the bathroom um toilet tissue holder from the other side of the wall and i put it into the cabinet on the side because i didn't want any holes in the subway tile um walls i do think that this location is better for it and it just looks really good so here i am adding in some new towels that i got from target i actually found a really nice painting at home goods and i'm installing that and i'm just adding some final touches to the bathroom and here's the before the bathroom and here is the after it just looks like an entirely new space the subway tiles really brighten up the whole entire wall the light gray color just kind of adds that cool tone that i was talking about the blue cabinet just kind of adds that great pop of color that sometimes you need throughout a house and i just added in a few details of um the shower curtain you know new towels and then there's two frames on the wall that i actually got from the dollar store and i just printed out some of my favorite quotes from my regular printer so it was just a nice transformation for under 300. um there was some tools that i did use that i own from before so i did not include those in the prices and here is the price list of everything i bought for this project it came to 294.85 just under 300. if you are planning to do a diy bathroom makeover or do something with the inspiration that i provided i would love to hear about it in the comments below i'm always excited to hear about if i inspired someone anyway also i know
