In today's episode we're traveling to the remote volcanic island of Hachijo Once an extremely popular retreat for Japanese vacationers, the tourism industry here has long been fading Scattered across the island are numerous old resorts that now sit empty and abandoned Today however, we're focusing on one hotel in particular that was once the crown jewel of this tropical paradise The Hachijo Royal Hotel Sitting abandoned since 2006, Nature has had plenty of time to reclaim its territory Now we're venturing inside to discover what's left Wonder why this car was left here maybe a yeah, company car This one looks really smashed There's uh concrete inside of it maybe something would fell on it? maybe Someone drove it into a wall, I don't know It's pretty messed up There's another truck here this whole car looks like it's rusting away There's no more roof We already saw that the basement door was open we don't know if the basement is going to actually Connect to the hotel in a way that isn't blocked off I already see stairs up just that's a good sign Little crawlspace It's a lot of trash in here but like all bagged up Yeah, there's a lot of trash bags up in here also this is the lobby it's the main front door No vandalism whatsoever even though the place is really easy to get into That's pretty cool to see It's not a usual occurrence Pretty nice checking counter area The old phone booths are cool Yeah So it looks like all the furniture was taken away but everything else is really intact it's all stacked up over there Yeah I'm surprised no photographer came and set them all back up yeah That telephone booth is really cool I mean the booth looks way older than the phone that's in it it does It's moving by itself Spooky that thing is so rusted It's crazy This looks like a bar they've got all the drinks on the shelves back there Constructed in 1963 during the islands first tourism boom, The resort was initially successful It wasn't until the 90s when the hotel would shut its doors for the first time Over the following years, the hotel would open and close under different names until finally in 2006, it closed for good Since then the building has been left to face the elements of this earthquake and typhoon prone island Greek themed Wow this room is decayed It's a cool little logo up here I wonder if those drips are supposed to be there or if it's from decay I'm going to guess they're supposed to be there because it's kind of centered in the frame accounting for the drips It's curtains here gift shop Yeah, this is a gift shop The floor just collapsed right here into the basement nice That's just like a crawlspace though Yeah, but still I guess this is a popular spot to see dolphins It's already a little too chilly to be going in that water now though Let's listen to this is the CD still in there? Yeah what year is it from? 2008 are there baths in here? Just a lizard up there Just storage a rock wall between and this sushi thing yeah

[sushi thing was from] Wow all the plates and glassware still perfectly intact Perfectly usable That's pretty rare for how long this place has been abandoned and how open it is it is It's just hard enough to get to no one will come here just to vandalize Yeah, those are the sushi coats right? yep definitely a sushi spot Men's and ladies sides maybe? go away oo, an abandoned vending machine How much is stuff more expensive? yeah, pretty expensive probably up charged this in like a fancy hotel yeah there's a lot of mold Moss whatever that green stuff is Here's the bath The onsen Let's check out the women's side now pretty much identical

[that one looks lucarous] it's like hardened Absolutely nothing has been smashed Feel like only in Japan could a place like this be abandoned for so many years and have no vandalism Yeah, the fact it's on an island helps too All the silverware is still here in the right spots Let's check out the kitchen that door just wobbled It just goes back into here Lot of soup bowls holy cow this whole thing is full of little tea cups and plates It's incredible it all just got left here Oh my gosh doesn't end This stuff is all still perfectly usable oh there's stuff left in here is it rotting? Yeah okay, this one's just storage this one had stuff left it's disgusting oh smells fricking nasty Should we just ignore that? just creaking everything is creaking The winds kind of howling again shh First guest room floor that we're exploring smells pretty moldy Just look how short the door frames are I hit my head on this Oh wow still slippers left this is very Japanese It's like the beds are gone but like Where they're ever beds in here? No, there weren't they use floor matresses they just use the floor for everything Japanese-style hotel room that's for sure there's probably some western style rooms somewhere in the hotel Yeah They don't even have legs on their chairs
[no] It's interesting Bathroom looks just like the bathrooms at the Japanese hotels we've been staying in these are the beds right here Where they just pads in the closet? Yeah Should we go to the end of the wing here? These rooms are all gonna look the same pretty much Wow, this one's in really good condition All the furniture is exactly where it should be There's no decay even I'd sleep here Some more japanese-style rooms oh shit This one's really decayed Oh wow That's a crazy difference Yeah geez oh, the mold dude i can't hang out here for long
this is crazy That's crazy how this one's so decayed Here's the room on this side of the hallway Looks perfect Come to the other side of the hallway and yeah There's this We're above the main lobby now Here's the grand staircase oh shit, look at this room The ceiling fell It smells so bad holy shit geez the ceiling's collapsed this would have been a really nice hotel in it's time Someone put a a pool stick in here That's just stupid I'm taking that out It's kind of wedged in there Oh shit yeah, that's like really budged in nevermind, i got it Everything on this side is way more decayed Yeah, i wonder why that is

[this side's in pretty good shape] it was a huge room These rooms also smell terrible I would think if you had your fully functioning sense of smell right now you would not even be going in these rooms probably it's like There's mold and then there's advanced mold That's advanced mold There's a draft coming from over here must be a window open already It's another suite yeah Looks like someone was living here Yeah oh here's the open window People were probably living here well Yeah, some areas of this building are in remarkably good shape and other areas are just terrible oh look when you pull it out, it connects the batteries together but it's dead I'm curious to see what those rooms above the really messed up rooms on the floor below look like Huh the rooms above look better it would be the windows where it got in The smells are so bad this might be like dangerous levels of mold Yeah, I'm actually getting concerned the mold can make us sick cus It's very very moldy in here The air is so stagnant Oh another room with the ceiling collapsed Wow just fell right down on top of the beds Wow, I'm looking in some of the windows here on the floor above us and there is just plants covering them on the inside? Yeah on the inside It's crazy Geez look at this bed Either I'm getting used to the smell or it's not as bad up here probably a little bit of both Oh, that's a draft Seems like the window's been open in this room for a long time That's the difference an open window makes These hotel rooms are like a jungle Holy shit Damn, the variation and condition of the rooms in here is crazy There's some perfect ones and then there's ones like this This floor looks different this was a kitchen or just place for service Oh wow Yamaha piano Looks perfectly intact I bet it works unless the wood's all rotted Yeah Oh there's a cop fuck are you serious? Yes They're driving right past I Had his lights on and everything i need to adjust my aperture Is this a spotlight? yeah are you seeing the water that comes out when you step on this carpet?
[yes, i know] Anyway there's a cockroach on this key sounds out of tune, but yeah We're gonna keep working our way up because we're starting to lose light oh, there's more up here a private lounge maybe? mhm for the top tier guests shows that we really know nothing about playing yeah just mashing keys This isn't just a lounge this is a full executive suite cus here's the bedroom The full bathroom Yeah, it's labeled as a room I bet this says executive suite in Japanese And there's like a separate door so your bartender could come in and serve you drinks in your own room Yep so, that door goes out to the main hallway right
[and they don't have to come] Well, it's like a double door This is the main door, but Oh, so you could have that door to let in like your bartender servant yeah, you can have this open but then close this then the bartender Does not have to cannot come in the main room, they only come to the bar we're really visible up here yeah um, it's gonna rain it's gonna rain? oh shit look you can see it out there it's gonna rain, let's go back inside right now It's coming this way fast It gone rain that's beautiful over there with the sun setting With the tourism industry on the island showing no sign of returning to its former numbers, the future looks bleak for the royal hotel For now, it will continue to decay at the hands of Mother Nature We hope you enjoyed coming along on this exploration
So quick psa, not trying to advertise this channel or anything, I just think they supply a great resource for constructing post-apocalyptic worlds, or any world that has an abandoned area in it.
The guys who do this have a good policy of not messing with the buildings they visit, they just genuinely go in and explore, and make observations of what happened in different places. This vid in particular, one side of the hotel is well preserved and the other is falling apart, due primarily to which direction the windows are facing- So little things like that can make a huge difference!
