sometimes building an ar can be a little confusing especially the gas system are you going to need a pistol length a rifle length a carbine length and what does all this actually mean so today what we're going to do is go over just that we're going to talk about the gas system of an ar-15 we'll talk about the gas tube length gas block size buffer setup barrel and how everything correlates together so before we get into it make sure you hit that subscribe button and let's check it out so first off what we're going to talk about is gas tube length this is going to tie in with the buffer system and the barrels themselves we're going to go over the four most common links now there are other links out there wilson combat has an intermediate and different items like that but we're gonna go over the main four the four that we're going to go over are the pistol length carbine length mid length and rifle length so when you talk about gas tube length it is the actual length of the tube itself these are going to be set up on different options for barrels which we will get to here in a little bit so just a general overview of the tube links themselves the pistol is 6.75 inches carbine is 9.75 mid length is 11.75 and rifle is 15.25 this is an 11 and a half inch barrel from ballistic advantage this has a carbine length gas system so what that means is this works with the carbine length tube now when you're looking at a barrel and you're looking at the actual length of a gas tube they're not going to be the exact same length as what you would think they would be a carbine length gas tube is 9.75 inches that does not mean it is going to be 9.75 inches from the hole itself to the back of the barrel the gas tube actually sticks back a little bit past the barrel and enter the receiver so now that we talked about gas tube length let's talk about gas block size there's going to be four different sizes the first being a small .625 this is most of your normal pencil style barrels the next is your most common and that is 0.750 the third largest is 0.836 this isn't as common so you won't see it but sometimes you will the largest size is going to be 0.930 you're going to see this on more of your larger size barrels in length and in diameter and then finally we're going to talk about the buffer system itself there's generally going to be three different buffer styles you're going to have pistol carbine and rifle what this correlates to is not only the tube itself but the weight of the buffer inside of it so if you're running a pistol-length gas tube with a pistol-length barrel you're going to run a pistol length buffer tube system sometimes you can run a carbine length on some setups but again this is different from gun to gun so you're going to want to test it if you have a pistol length tube and barrel you're most likely going to run a pistol tube setup if you have a rifle that has a carbine length gas system with a carbine length barrel you're going to run a carbine length buffer system and then of course if you have a rifle with a rifle length tube you're going to run a rifle tube setup the only different one is mid length mid length doesn't technically have its own buffer tube setup so you're going to run a carbine length buffer tube setup with a mid-length gas tube and barrel this may seem intimidating at first but you're going to break it up into parts so the first thing that you're going to determine with a build is what length barrel am i going to run so let's say you're going to run an 11 and a half inch pistol ar so like this ballistic advantage barrel that i have here an 11 and a half inch barrel sometimes runs a carbine sometimes it runs a mid lane this particular one is running a carbine length so now i know what tube i'm going to need so i'm going to get a carbine gas tube now that i have the carbine gas tube i can think about okay the gas block so what i'm going to do is go back to my barrel and say okay this ballistic advantage has a 0.750 gas block diameter so i know okay i'm just going to run a standard 0.750 gas block so now that you know you're running a carbine length tube and barrel you can go to your buffer system now this is a full kit from aero precision so you don't have to piece it together it comes with the tube the spring and then you will notice it also comes with the buffer itself awesome kit they're very affordable we highly recommend it so same thing if you're building anything in 308 65 creedmoor or other calibers so i've got a 308 barrel here this is a 20 inch ballistic advantage this is going to have a rifle length gas system so i know okay i'm choosing a 20 inch build and i like this barrel now i need to find the rifle length parts to go with it so i'm going to find a rifle length gas tube i know that this barrel is going to be a .930 so i'm going to buy a 0.930 gas block and then i'm going to get a rifle tube setup now if you want an adjustable tube you can run a carbine length tube with a rifle spring and buffer setup you can buy those separate or you can get a couple kits combine those and you'll be ready to roll again it may seem like it's a little bit intimidating but just piece it together find what barrel you want and then build off of that start with the barrel go to the gas tube and gas block figure out the size of your gas block diameter the length of your gas tube and then go to your buffer system if you guys have any questions on ar setups gas systems in particular feel free to leave us a comment below we have a lot of awesome parts on our website from companies such as ballistic advantage aero precision wilson combat and many many more so as always make sure to hit that subscribe button and check us out at
