this massive Bernhardt Buffet is part of a dining set worth thousands of dollars and I'm about to paint it a client of mine has had this furniture for over 15 years and after a major Homer model she's ready for a new look without breaking the bank before you freak out about me painting over this beautiful wood I promise you no furniture was harmed in the making of this video This is actually one of two pieces that I'm going to be working on she's going to have this and a dining table painted black and I think we're going with a satin finish with it and looks like it was used to store alcohol there's some dog chewing marks and stuff done here I'll just fill it out with wood filler and it does have a marble top but that's nothing that I'm gonna have to deal with they already took it off the first thing I'm going to do is remove the hardware and remove the doors and the drawers so that's lighter and I can get it up on something this thing is very heavy foreign no no I'm sorry I'm just working on furniture okay ask me if it was a garage sale foreign [Music] [Music] okay I've got the drawers taken care of I just need to take the Hardware off of the doors and take the doors off put the door hardware in a different box get separated especially the hinges for these nails here that are holding this on on the top and bottom I'm usually able to get them out with a screwdriver bring them out a little bit needle nose pliers because you don't want to bend these and you don't want to lose them [Music] foreign [Music] last thing to do is the hinges and hinges can be finicky about how they go back on so it's best to mark them as you take them off so this is the inside of the hinge and for me I do one two three four just scratch a little Mark in there for one this one gets two marks this one gets three marks this one gets numeral four [Music] these need to come out on each side you have screws on the bottom be easier for me to paint this cabinet without this in here so I'll take that out too when I'm at it [Applause] [Music] foreign they didn't refinish the underside all this dust and stuff that's collected at the bottom and any other Grime that we can't see needs to come off before I paint it so it doesn't interfere with the paint's finish to clean it I'm going to be using this trisodium phosphate this is a powdered form that you mix with water put some warm water in here just add a couple tablespoons give it a good stir cause this dunk a rag in the tsp water here wring it out and give this thing a wipe down thank you I have a lot of people ask me why I cleaned before standing if it's going to get dirty again the answer is because all of this will just come off on your sandpaper and gum it up and make your sanding more difficult not always but enough to make me want to clean everything first before sanding and then clean again before I sand the whole piece I'm going to sand this little piece here and just get it evened out so I can apply some wood filler [Music] got a little bit more damage here to deal with foreign [Music] these dark areas here is where the Finish isn't sanded back because there's dents so that's where I'm going to put wood filler to make those minor repairs I'm going to use this Minwax wood filler I'm just going to be putting it on in thin layers so it should dry within like 30 minutes to an hour there's a bigger chunk taken out of this part here so it might take a little bit more wood filler which means it'll take more time probably have to do about like two or three layers here you don't want to lay it on too thick because then it can crack so less is better I took care of the sanding with my surf prep 3x4 sander and a sponge sanding pad so I could get into all of these details easily yes these Sanders are expensive and yes they are worth it if you do a lot of refinishing woodworking remodeling or any other subcontractor work that requires a lot of sanding I get a lot more done in a shorter amount of time with these Sanders it doesn't vibrate near as much as cheaper detail Sanders typically do and one of my favorite things about the Sanders how quiet it is I live in a suburban area with neighbors all around me I don't want to have a loud sander echoing off their houses if you're interested in this sander I'll put my affiliate link down in the description along with a 10 discount code if you happen to buy one I got a little Kickback you know what I'm talking about if you already own the surf prep Sanders and you need to restock on some sanding supplies you can also use that Lincoln discount and I'll get the kick back too right here [Music] [Music] this drawer had a scratch in the finish that I somehow didn't notice until this point so I applied some wood filler to it and moved on while I let it dry so I could come back to it later in the meantime I used a rag and a paint brush to clean all the dust off of the project I'll typically use a dry rag or a brush to knock off the majority of the Dust first and then come back with a damp Rag and wipe the rest of it off so it doesn't Gunk up on the rag as I'm cleaning it and just smear around when I went to check on the scratch in the drawer I realized it would be easier if I just use a sander to feather this scratch out instead of adding more wood filler and waiting on it to dry so I did that knocked it out and moved on foreign everything is clean and sanded the prep is pretty much done the next thing I need to do is spray some lacquer on this piece that's going to do two things first it's going to seal in this exposed wood so there's no bleeds whenever I apply my water-based paint in the areas that are over sanded like this have a chance of bleeding it usually doesn't happen with black paint but it's better to be safe than sorry the second thing it's going to do is create a layer between the wood and the paint I'm about to apply I know not everyone's going to agree with this wood grain being painted black in the future when someone decides to strip this the paint I'm applying won't be directly in the wood grain so it'll essentially make it easier for someone in the future to restore it to its original Beauty the paint I'm going to be spraying is a Valspar signature this is dark kettle black here's the barcode and color information for anyone who needs it looks a little gray when it's wet but it dries a lot darker than this foreign [Music] foreign just a few more light coats of black like this and this will be ready for top coat [Music] foreign foreign [Music] okay the paint is now dry I'm gonna let this dry for the rest of the evening before I apply the top coat just to make sure it has enough time to cure these still need the backs of them painted I'm not going to record that because you get the idea already so I'll let this dry she actually has a dining table that I'm gonna work on in the meantime so this will get top coated tomorrow to protect this piece I'm spraying satin water-based polyurethane out of my sprayer for those interested the polyurethane I'm using is Parks Pro polyurethane from Home Depot it's sold right next to verothane and Minwax they all work about the same I tend to use this one because it's less expensive and made by the same company as verothene I'll apply a few thin coats letting it dry about 30 minutes to an hour in between each coat depending on the weather then come back with some 320 grit sandpaper sand it all smooth give it a little wipe down and then one last thicker coat of polyurethane that delivers a factory-like finish thank you side foreign you can see it looks a little splotchy it looks milky that's going to clear up and things should smooth out all of this little milky colored substance here but I think that'll be it on this one I set the buffet aside for a while while I finished working on the client's table the day that it was going to be picked up and taken to the client's house I decided to do a little impromptu live stream putting the piece back together and being social with some of my viewers if you've never seen one of my live streams I hope you can make it sometime we have a lot of fun being social with each other people ask me questions I learn from people in chat chat causes me to spill paint on my keyboard hahaha babe I need to go get a new keyboard it's a great experience and I look forward to doing it more so keep your eyes peeled it works you there I just got a message from the customer that the movers are 10 minutes away can we just leave this stream going just leave the stream going with the movers um I've already got this on a little piano though you want me to take that off of there once the moving company arrived I let them know that this is painted furniture and it needs to be handled very carefully this company did a great job blanket wrapping everything and making sure that nothing was damaged along the way thank you once we arrived at the client's house it was the moment of truth it's always nerve-wracking leaving your furniture in the hands of someone else but again they did a great job if you're in the Dallas Fort Worth area and you need movers I highly recommend this company not a sponsor I just like them and now the moment you've been waiting for the final reveal the main part of my client's remodel was the old dark wood floors that came out and she didn't want to have this furniture dark anymore I think with these light floors and this black satin finish that isn't too black everything looks perfect what do you think let me know down in the comments below
