Please note that this website is currently a work in progress! Lots of interesting data and statistics to come.
Perfect example to show those people who insist "Just answer his damn questions and stop being an ass so you can both go on your way faster."
It's not the person who's asserting his Rights that extends the stop beyond what is required to write a citation... it's the cop who gets pissed that people assert their Rights and does so. If the cop doesn't act like a petulant bully then the stop is done and over with even faster than if you DID answer all his questions!
So I got pulled over for a headlight out. The officer asked "where are you coming from? Where are you going? How much have you had to drink?"
I was very conflicted. I could have "exercised my rights" - but I was hoping for a warning. I answered the questions in a polite way and she told me to get my light fixed. I was on my way with no fine. There is a line that I wouldn't have allowed her to cross. No searches. But some brief questions, I'm not too offended.
My guess is this guy knew there was no possibility of a warning, so he handled it well.
I usually hate videos like these, but that guy was pretty cool.
You can still assert your rights and be respectful
My most recent interaction with the Missouri highway patrol was a stop for 78 in a 65, and because I was selective in the questions I answered, I exited the interaction with a verbal (not written) warning. You want to give innocuous answers that play to their sense of stewardship.
What question did I choose to answer?
"Where you headed?"
"Busch stadium for the game tonight, I've never been there and I've been told it's one of the best places to see baseball."
Since I had out of state plates, this played to their sense of welcoming tourism and not being rude to visitors. He ran my license as he was going to anyway and it came back clean so he let me loose. I lost 15 minutes, but no dollars.
Easy peasy
Maybe we need a best of? This is a good one.
