A lot of critics in here, but I really liked the Video. It's not exactly "everything you need to know" but it's very helpful. Thanks!

in vanilla holy priests were considered the strongest healer by most but in tbc they face much deeper competition and it begs the question what makes holy priest worthy of being your main that's what we'll try to answer in this video we'll start off with the two distinct variations of the holy specialization in tbc the first is the deep holy build this features an incredibly powerful talent called circle of healing a spell that drastically improves your aoe healing capabilities this build makes holy priests one of the strongest flex healers in the game group healing raid healing tank healing and just about everything in between the circle of healing priests can do it and they can do it well improved divine spirit is the informal name for the other variant of the holy specialization while it's less versatile than its circle of healing counterpart it's just as desirable in most of the expansion this build sacrifices some throughput talents in the holy tree to gain the divine spirit talent as well as the improved divine spirit complement we'll take a deeper look at the differences between these two builds in a later section but first let's take a look at the healing spells available to the holy priest first up is renew this healing over time spell saw limited usage in vanilla because of its poor mana efficiency and relatively low throughput that changes in the burning crusade this was largely due in part to the changes made to hot in patch 2.0.1 the first of which gave bonus healing effects from gear and talent a much higher contribution to the amount of healing produced by healing over time effects the second change made it possible for multiple priests to have an active renew on the same target at the same time so renew has value in just about every healing situation but there's a few healing assignments where it really shines like when you're tank healing renew helps to smooth out the incoming damage as well as stabilizes the tank's health during periods where tank killers are either on the move or crowd control an example of this would be refreshing your tank's renew before the raid wide fear mechanic on the archimonde encounter from mount hyjal renew is also an excellent tool for raid healing duties you'll use it for healing up targets who have recently received moderate damage but don't need to be topped off quickly fur of mending is a new instant cast healing spell in tbc with a 10 second cooldown the spell works by first placing a 5 charge buff on your target whenever that target takes damage a charge of the buff is consumed immediately healing the target and bouncing to another nearby raid member this cycle continues until all five charges are consumed or charged has not been consumed in 30 seconds on paper this is an incredibly efficient spell for healing sustained damage on stacked targets with seemingly no downsides and that's pretty much true but it can get annoying if the buff bounces to a target that isn't taking damage while there's several nearby raid members that are taking damage right next to the guy but that's just a minor gripe there is a pretty interesting use for this spell that isn't obvious from reading the tool tip that i felt was worth mentioning basically whenever a player is healed by prayer of mending the threat generated by that heal belongs to them and not the priest that casted prayer mending therefore you might find it useful to put prayer of mending on the main tank before a pull so they get an immediate burst of threat in the first few seconds of the fight that threat can mean all the difference if the tank gets unlucky with a string of misses or parries fun fact a protection paladin generates extra threat from the prayer of mending heal since righteous fury increases their threat with holy spells by 90 power ward shield it's an instant cast spell that grants your target a very strong absorption shield despite its high mana cost this spell actually sees regular use in raids because of its unique ability to prevent damage before it actually happens making it great to use on players at full health when they're about to receive a hard-hitting mechanic and since the shield prevents spell pushback while it's active it works incredibly well on casters who are taking a small amount of periodic damage flash heal is your fast but inefficient casted heal the healing coefficient for this spell is relatively weak so it scales quite poorly as you gear up but that doesn't mean you'll never use it things don't always go according to plan and progression rating and flash heal is really good when crappy fans just aim to only use this heal when a target would otherwise die before you could cast something more mana efficient binding heal is another inefficient fast cast heel it works by healing the priest and his target for about as much as a flash heal this can be really useful when you need to heal yourself but several other raid members are critically injured and you just don't have the time to be mana efficient this situation typically occurs when one or more healers have died during an encounter and you're trying to cover multiple healing assignments at once like with flash heal don't be afraid to use it just don't abuse it because you'll go out of mana very quickly greater heal is your relatively long casted heel with excellent mana efficiency and high throughput like renew greater heal excels in both tank and raid healing but there are a couple of nuances with this heal that you'll need to understand before getting the most out of it i'll mention one here and i'll get to the other in the healing assignment section the first is the concept of downranking for those of you unaware spell down ranking is a tactic where players use a lower rank of a spell because it produces the desired effect at a much lower mana cost druids for example use the rank 1 version of entangling roots in arena since root effects are capped to a 10 second duration in pvp and the extra damage at max rank is actually counterproductive since roots break on damage priests downrank greater heal because the max rank often heals for substantially more than we need it to for example suppose your target is missing 2 000 hit points and your max rank greater heal heals for an average of 5 000. if your target doesn't take any additional damage during the cast your overhealing exceeded your effective healing to get around this we'll use the rank 1 version of greater heal which heals for an average of 2500 and costs half the mana so in this example you've effectively healed the target for the same amount at half the mana cost and that's the whole idea behind downranking moving on we have circle of healing an ability exclusive to that deep holy build that i mentioned at the start of this video the spell is instant cast has no cooldown and works by healing your target and all of their nearby group members speaking of healing your nearby group members please subscribe to my channel it really does help me in producing content in a more time efficient manner please subscribe to my channel back to circle of healing the lack of a cool down or cast time on this ability makes it exceptional for healing groups of players taking sustained periodic damage one of the best showcases for circle of healing comes during the blood boil encounter in black temple every 10 seconds blood boil applies a 24 second debuff that deals 600 dps to an entire group from the raid with circle of healing priests can efficiently keep these groups topped without breaking a sweat prayer of healing is another group healing spell that often gets disregarded when a priest picks up circle of healing and at first glance it's easy to see why prayer of healing has a three second cast time and absurdly high mana cost and it's only usable on the group that the priest is in on the other hand prayer of healing produces more healing per second than circle of healing and it has double the radius but that's still not really a convincing argument for using prayer of healing over circle of healing since circle of healing is just so much more mana efficient the one definitive case for using prayer of healing over circle of healing is when there's huge but predictable bursts of incoming damage that you need to heal very quickly a great example of this comes during the title shield mechanic on high warlord magentis when the title shield breaks the whole raid takes 8 500 frost damage and early on in your black temple progression that's a near fatal blow to the majority of the raid but priests can precast prayer of healing a few seconds before the shield breaks so that it goes off right as the damage comes in that takes five players out of the critical health range way faster than circle of healing could so don't take this ability off your bars there are a few situations where it does come in handy so what healing assignments are typically given to the holy priest well that depends as i mentioned at the start of this video holy priests have two viable builds and your assignment largely depends on which of those builds you're using as improved divine spirit you don't have circle of healing and while prayer of mending does have its niche it's far too restrictive for general use so aoe in group healing is definitely off the table for you you may get assigned to non-group rate healing also known as spot rate healing but it really depends on the encounter holy priests can fill this role very well when the damage on the encounter is relatively predictable and not too spiky this allows them to take advantage of their efficient spells like greater heal and renew but on encounters where the damage is very random and spiky the priest lacks an efficient means of responding quickly take the illidari council fight for example at any given moment a random raid member can be brought to 30 health by divine wrath the player needs to be topped as quickly as possible since at any time they can be chosen for another deadly random mechanic called in venom priest's only option here is flash heal and while it's better than nothing it has relatively poor mana efficiency and mediocre throughput you're not cut out for this compared to a resto druid who has nature's swiftness for an instant cast healing touch or swift men for a short cooldown instant burst heal there's really no competition so what do improved divine spirit priests excel in the answer is tank healing in this role your top priority is to keep your new active on the tank at all times and your next priority is to always have a greater heel cast in progress on your assigned tank this way if your tank needs the healing by the end of the cast you can let it finish and if he doesn't need the healing by the end of the cast you can just cancel it this allows you to react to high amounts of damage quickly and with excellent mana efficiency this tactic along with greater heel down ranking goes a long way in separating a good priest from an average one another great tool you have for tank healing is prayer of mending which you can bounce off the tank when you have spare mana to give them some bonus threat and pad the meters i mean i mean help the raid healers and last you have power word shield which you can use to soften the blow of a hard-hitting mechanic or when you're on the move and you just need something to cast as for circle of healing priests you're just as capable of tank healing and spot healing as improved divine spirit is and in phase one you'll pretty much be assigned to the same roles the reason for this is twofold one circle of feelings starts off kind of weak since you don't have a lot of bonus healing effects from gear and the baseline healing of the spell is quite low and two there aren't many encounters in karazhan gruel's lair and mag's lair that are really well suited for circle of healing but after phase 1 tier 5 brings some encounters that do allow you to take advantage of circle of healing this means that you can start to expect some more group healing assignments but you really should expect a mixture of tank healing spot healing and group healing throughout this tier phase three is where you really start establishing yourself as that primary group healer there will still be some mixed assignments but not nearly as many as in phase two and of course when sunwell releases in phase five getting an assignment other than group healing is quite the rare occasion this is where circle of healing becomes so strong that some guilds will consider converting their improved divine spirit priest to circle of healing as to which build you should play it really comes down to your personal preferences after tier 4 guilds will typically only carry one improved divine spirit priest so if you really love the idea of playing a priest as well as bringing a unique raid buff improved divine spirit might be your niche but if you'd rather be a more complete healer who's able to perform multiple healing roles go with circle appealing also uh according to youtube analytics you guys don't watch the outros so i'm just not gonna i'm not gonna do it this time so peace
