elytra are one of the coolest things in minecraft giving the player the ability to fly but there's a lot to know about this item and i'm going to cover it all starting right now so a later are found in the n dimension in the outer portion of the end once you've defeated the ender dragon a portal will appear and if you go through that you'll get to the outer end and after exploring that a bit you can find an end city which will sometimes have end ships like this now in the basement of them here where there's usually a shulker there is the elite run is actually the only place you can find this item in the entire game and just the straight up elytra is pretty cool but without fireworks or enchantments it's not that useful however it is a really cool item for gliding around and it's literally only found here so if you want more of them you're gonna have to continue exploring around the end dimension looking for more end cities to find more elytra so it's certainly one of the rarest items in the game now what enchantments are there for the elytra well there's only a couple the first one is on breaking three this means that the amount of time that you can use the electro is multiplied by about four which is really nice the second one is mending which of course gives the ability for the elytra's durability to be increased when gaining experience now there's actually two other things you can put on here but they're both curses so you could put cursive binding on here if you wanted or you could put gruesome vanishing on here if you wanted not exactly sure why you'd want to do that except for maybe if you wanted to just always wear your lighter and just never be able to take them off or if when you die this disappeared which could possibly be useful for a multiplayer server if you want maybe an opponent who's just killed you to not be able to get your elytra now if you don't have any mending for your elytra what you can do is you can actually repair it with phantom membranes now these are either gotten by cats when they're stood up during the night and they walk around and in the morning there's a random chance they may give you a phantom membrane or some other items the other way you can get phantom membranes is by killing the phantoms which generate minecraft quite frequently if you haven't slept for over three days now one phantom membrane will repair exactly one quarter of the elytra's durability so you can see here we have 432 durability on this and this will repair one quarter of that and of course if it's more damaged you can use more of these just be aware that every single time you repair this it will get more expensive the next time so it's a good idea to only repair it like this if you absolutely need to however a neat little trick is that if you've repaired this a bunch of times with phantom membranes and the price is getting quite expensive if you enchant it with let's say a useless enchantment like let's say i'm breaking one or something and then you disenchant it it'll actually reset that timer so it'll go back to the base price of repairing this with not very useful in survival but an interesting little technique if you do want to be able to keep repairing this without having the price go up to too expensive eventually now technically all you need to fly with elytra is just elytra but what's really important in my opinion is having feather falling on your boots now of course feather falling 4 is best but the reason why this enchantment is so important is the fact that when you're using elytra you can hit things and take damage and the feather falling will reduce that damage by a large amount making lytra generally much more safe to use so i would recommend having feather falling boots whenever using elytra especially if you're first learning how to use them as it makes them a lot less deadly and reduces your chance of death by fall damage so you now have your elytra but what are the best methods of flight so to actually fly with elytra or enable them into flight mode all you have to do is tap space or whatever your jump key is when you're in the air so when i'm on the ground like this that would just mean i double tap space like this so when i'm in the air from my jump i tap space again and now i'm flying or for instance let's say i'm going to run and jump off this cliff halfway in my drop i could press space like that and although i hit this tree i did enter flight mode and you could go like this and once you're in flight mode basically moving your mouse kind of controls your direction kind of going higher up like this makes you go slower facing lower down makes you go faster and i'll go a bit more into that later but how do you actually get some velocity behind you instead of just gliding from tall place a tall place as that's not a very useful method of travel there are three main methods and the first one is fireworks now there's three types of fireworks you could make to fly with elytra there is one with flight duration three that's made with three pieces of gunpowder in separate slots in the crafting grid then there's flight duration two with two gunpowder and a piece of paper on the crafting grid and there's flight duration one which is one paper and one gunpowder now players use all different types of these some prefer different types however generally the best thing to use is flight duration one but i'll show you how they all look this is flight duration three we'll right click with the firework in our hand and we have this boost you can see those particles at the bottom and that's about how long it lasted here is flight duration two and you can see how long that one lasted and here is flight duration one and you can see how long that one lasted now of course when flying which is quite a complicated thing you're going to want to have as controllable movements as possible so flight duration 1 which is the most controllable because it's a very short acting amount of boost is probably the best one to go for also because gunpowder is not the easiest thing to get making your fireworks three times easier to craft is good as of course flight duration three takes three gunpowder for three rockets and flight duration one only takes one gunpowder for three rockets but either way all three of these fireworks are good for propelling yourself but it's probably the best to go with flight duration one as you do tend to burn through a lot of these and of course with a gunpowder and a paper farm it should be pretty easy to get yourself a large amount of firework rockets so the second method of flying with elytra is to use a riptide trident now if you're in any water at all even one block of water and you hold right click on the trident that has riptide enchantment on it and then let go you will fly into the air like this and this mechanic is of course really good to combine with elytra as you can boost yourself incredibly high in the air like i did right there with absolutely no rockets and just a little bit of durability being lost on your trident however what makes this riptide trident incredibly amazing is that if it's raining we can continue to boost ourselves in the air anywhere we are as long as it's not a desert or a different bottom that doesn't rain in mean that we can continue to make this riptide effect even in the air and what's crazy is that the amount of speed you get from this is literally exponential and i'll show that off right here if we keep using this you can see we're literally getting faster and faster and faster it's so fast it's probably lagging out the game right now and what's so crazy about that is the fact that if you want to travel a very very long distance and you're not worried about making your computer nearly explode by traveling tens of thousands of blocks very quickly you can just continue to boost and boost and boost with riptide and get procedurally faster and faster and faster and be able to travel hundreds of thousands of blocks in literally one session of it raining so that's an amazing method of propelling yourself with elytra as well it's just a little bit difficult to control needs it to be raining or near ocean areas but overall is quite cool now the third method is a little bit boring but it's also quite useful and that is the potion of slow falling i'm gonna drink one right here up in the sky in fact we'll get a little bit higher up now if we drink the potion of slow falling just like this what's gonna happen is that we're basically going to start falling very slow and also our elytra is going to become much more slow now this is useful for a lot of different things number one this is incredibly useful if you're trying to maybe look at an area you're trying to check it out what does this area look like you're kind of trying to figure out you know where you want to live maybe and you can do that by having this potion of slow falling you can see here i'm just traveling incredibly slowly it's kind of hard to see here but it's very humorously slow what makes this a method of flying is the fact that you're at a very very tall area and you have a potion of slow falling you can cover a very long distance although it's quite slow because your slow falling is so slow that you can go forward a lot more with much less height and so it's kind of an interesting method as well overall it's quite cool i'm of course even taking our lighter off we're safe from fall damage but with the elytra enabled it's even slower making a very very very slow way of slowly guiding through the air if you want that kind of an experience now flying with a lighter on minecraft can be a little bit confusing as the flight mechanics are quite complicated but i'll show you everything you need to know about them right now now the first one is almost another method of propelling yourself in flight and that is flying at 45 degree angles i'll show that off right here we're going to use a firework rocket like this to get ourselves high up into the air once we're high up into the air we can basically preserve our height over time so i'm actually going to turn on the f3 menu and of course you'll have to kind of approximate this eventually but we're going to look down at about 45 degree angle that's basically halfway between looking at the horizon and looking straight up at the sky and once we get very far down on the ground then we're going to look up until we're at negative 45 degrees like this now of course the timing has to be done very very well but if you can do this at the correct timing what you can basically do is you can look up then you can look down like this about an angle maybe something like this and then once you get starting to look down very very low you can slowly lift up like this very very slowly and then start looking all the way up again towards about negative 45 up into the sky and then look down again towards about 45 like this and then once you get down towards the ground you can then again look up at about 45 like this and basically by repeating that over time you can get much more distance out of one electric firework and technically you can continue to do this for a very very long amount of time and basically propel yourself hundreds of times more distance with far less fireworks just like this and as you see i'm continuing to go forward for a very very long amount of time now when we're flying there's some really important mechanics here to think about that is when we're pointing down we're basically going to continue to go faster i know that sounds kind of funny the fact is that if we look straight forward towards the horizon just like this we will eventually slow down because there's nothing to speed us up that is looking downwards you don't really want to fly looking straight forward just using elytra rockets like this now you can it's going to use a lot of rockets and it's not really worthwhile it's not even going to be quite as fast as looking down like this and then looking up again now when we're going up we of course do go slower and so it's important also to remember that if you want to go upwards that either you're going to have to get a lot of momentum and then slowly turn upwards or literally just look up and use your firework rockets also something interesting to note is that the faster movements you make the more velocity is destroyed so what i mean by that is let's say i'm going down here like this and i start whipping around in a circle just like this well now i'm actually going quite slowly but let's say i go this direction very fast and then very slowly turn instead of turning very quickly you'll notice there's basically not even a noticeable slowdown on how fast i'm going so if you want to preserve your speed make sure to have slow movements if you want to destroy your speed have quick movements this is how you land safely so we're going to go up really high i'm going to show you a very dangerous landing and i'm going to break down how to do it because it's actually quite simple we're going to go up very high and we're going to point right down at that island we're going to go very very fast it's going to be very hard not to smash into this island and die the second we get there i'm going to suddenly turn do a sharp movement and i'm right here very safely so it's actually quite simple to do this and i'll show you what i'm going to do when we're up in the air like this we're going to of course go down at a very quick angle because that's where we want to go we don't want to really wait and we're going to keep going as fast as we want to go once we're maybe 20 blocks from the ground we're gonna make a very sharp turn just like this this destroys almost all of our momentum and then we'll just keep turning towards the ground to get on here you can also use this to land on a very precise area so let's say we're gonna grab this dirt block here we're gonna try and land on it i might not be successful at that but we're going to try it so i'm going to place it down right there and we're going to fly up in the air all the way over here and we're going to try and land on that piece of dirt now the trick is that once we get close to this we're going to start by slowing ourselves down and we're going to kind of aim for it and kind of twist into where it is and i did it another trick when you're trying to land on a very small space is to hold shift when you get very near it the reason why is let's say we're flying towards this and i'll just try and show this off right now and we do not have shift on what will happen is we'll kind of try and land on it we might skid along it and we'll just kind of fly off of it like that obviously that's okay when we're down here that is horrendous if you're the top of a very tall tower or something like that so we're going to try flying down towards us again we're going to try and hold shift this time as we're trying to land on it now we're going to kind of turn in go like this get onto it i'm holding shift now the second i touch it i'm not going to fall off the edge because i can try to get to the edge once i've touched this i cannot get off of here if my shift key is held down or whatever the crouch key is on where you're playing minecraft and generally that's how you land now of course quick movements quick turns things like this weaving in and out of trees things like that they're all pretty simple as well they just take some practice and it generally has to do with going fast and having sharp turns to cut off momentum so you can control your speed quite simply now of course going through a forest like this could be quite difficult that's probably not advisable but you could probably do it if you're very good at lightray just like that however it can also be quite difficult and again the trick is going very quickly if you want to make yourself slow down and also turning very slowly if you want yourself to stay at your same speed those are really important rules to remember but overall it's mostly just practice and just kind of quick movements and things like that okay now a couple extras about elytra what's interesting is that you have 432 durability without unbreaking three each piece of durability represents one second of flight time with unbreaking three it equals approximately four seconds of flight time meaning that without unbreaking three you have a little bit over seven minutes of flight time with unbreaking three you have about 30 minutes of flight time which is quite cool now by using them in flight you cannot destroy elytra once you get to the end of the durability you just will not be able to fly anymore you'll start to fall down and probably die from fall damage but the elytra will not be destroyed it'll turn into this damaged elytra which has this interesting kind of crinkled broken texture and you can just repair it with mending or with combining with another electro although i'd certainly not suggest doing that or by combining with phantom membranes and will go back to its normal self so unlike tools or armor where once a sort of durability just breaks and disappears with electro it's not like that and you can actually continue to use it for as long as you want until it's gone to zero durability and then you can just repair it from then on out but it's always a good idea if your durability does go out to bring a water bucket with you and flying so you do not die on impact of the ground you can also use elytra to crawl which is basically getting into a one block space we can do that just like this and kind of getting into the space like that we can even take the lighter off now and now of course we're in crawl mode although you can also do that with let's say a trap door or a piston or something like that also you can use a lighter underwater if you want we can actually go underwater like this we're still in fly mode and we can keep right clicking like this with our firework rockets we're using maybe your riptide trident even when we are underwater which is really cool because if you like exploring underwater maybe doing things like that you have no worry about having to not be able to use electro underwater because you absolutely can it's a very very cool mechanic that way as well also a good trick when flying with elytra is to make sure that your mouse's sensitivity is somewhat high so you can make the very quick movements to move on to a single block things like that and of course getting to be quite skilled the elytra does take a bit of time also if you're in bedrock edition when you're in the middle of flying you can actually stop your flight abruptly by pressing the space key again in java addition this does absolutely nothing but if you're in bedrock condition pressing the space key would stop your flight just as if you took off your elytra in java sort of like this and then you stopped flying and you'd fall down and you could of course press space again to start flying again anyway i hope you enjoyed this video all about
