[Music] despite shedding itself of the classic zelda formula breath of the wild still packs in more references to other games in the series than perhaps any other some of these references are more subtle like how the chica runes in beacons translates to it's dangerous to go alone but some are pretty massive like the springs from skyward sword appearing as ruins in breath of the wild's world this is also true for the game's location names a huge amount of seemingly unremarkable places have names that reference previous games in the series again some are obvious like romani planes which calls back to majora's mask's romani ranch but some aren't as clear so let's explore the entirety of breath of the wild's map and run through any and all zelda references hiding there in case you hadn't noticed breath of the wild's map is pretty big and while a lot of its locations do have names that reference characters or places from other zelda games most of them just refer to what the location actually is or was used for like outpost ruins or scout hill and many more names are derived from things like types of fish or types of tree which we'll also miss out also many of the location names are either anagrams or corruptions of the names of zelda characters or places so while i think i've covered them all in this video i might have missed one or two out if you spot any that i didn't mention let me know in the comments down below so we'll start out as link does on the great plateau and move outwards from there focusing on the locations with names that reference previous games in the series on the plateau we have mount hylia obviously named after hylia the goddess appointed to guard the triforce of whom zelda is the mortal descendant and the temple of time which is of course yet another appearance of one of the series most iconic landmarks none of the other named locations on the plateau appear to directly reference other games though oman al the name of ashika monk and his shrine is an anagram of aonuma directly west of the plateau is dig dog suspension bridge named after dig dogger one of the bosses from zelda one just north of here we have a few other locations named after zelda 1 bosses manhala bridge after manhandler gliock bridge after gliac and aquamae lake and bridge after aquamentos a little north of this is mount dafnis named after daphnis nohansen hyrule the king of hyrule from the wind waker northeast of the plateau is the forest of time obviously a nod to ocarina of time and the colomo garrison ruins and lake colomo being an anagram of lokomo a sacred tribe that appears in spirit tracks east of here is a group of locations named after characters from skyward sword allen batro horwell and aegis with a pair of lakes most likely named after navi the fairy to the east mabel ridge just north of julian peaks could refer to maple the witch who appears in the oracle games and the gba version of a link to the past north of here though is a much clearer reference sahasrara slope named after sahasrala the sage from a link to the past and a link between worlds the rakoka hills are most likely named after kakariko village of which their name is nearly an anagram and tetler lake is a nod to tattle the fairy from majora's mask again its name is nearly an anagram of tattle but its japanese name toka lake is an anagram of chateau tattle's name in the japanese version of the game east of kakariko itself we find pierre plateau and benuru's stand named after the scarecrows from ocarina of time pierre and benoru south of the village are the pillars of levia named after levios the sky spirit from skyward sword lake ciela is likely a reference to siela the fairy from phantom hourglass and the peak of awakening is a pretty clear nod to link's awakening kwata's shelf is called kuwata plateau in japanese and its name is a corruption of okutaroku or octarok moving back towards the plateau just west of it we find mount naboru named after naboru the sage of spirits from ocarina of time fittingly overlooking the gerudo canyon pass nearby is kukat plateau which gets its name by combining the first three letters of kotake and kawume's names the twin gerudo witches moving south there's spectacle rock a recurring zelda location ever since the original game named for how it resembles a pair of glasses yana valley is named after the yana desert from link's awakening quickly covering the rest of the gerudo region the only location i could find that directly references another zelda game is the arbiter's grounds which calls back to the dungeon of the same name from twilight princess one stonework buried in the sands is still visible perhaps the lost remains of the very same place [Music] obviously lake hylia is a classic zelda location appearing in games ever since a link to the past and breath of the wild is no different however the bridge of hylia that crosses the lake references the bridge of the same name in twilight princess and the designs of the two bridges are similar if not identical just like mount hylia and hylia river these all refer to the goddess the farosh hills are named after the dragon spirit for rosh who can often be seen flying around lake hylia and farron woods the pirache plains south of lake hylia don't seem to refer to anything but the japanese name definitely does tetraplanes named after the wind waker zelda's alter ego papetto grove is likely a reference to the sacred grove from twilight princess where a skull kid attacks link by using puppets martha's landing is a reference to martha's bay a location from link's awakening moving on to farron woods which is in itself a recurring zelda location having appeared in twilight princess and skyward sword named after faror the goddess of courage and of life mount floria overlooks the woods from the north and the floria falls lead into lake floria across which is floria bridge and from which flows the floria river these are all named after lake floria from skyward sword which gets its name again from farah to the east tuft mountain is named after king tuft the ruler of hytopia and triforce heroes now let's move all the way out to even tide island a small crop of land where link is stripped of his equipment as part of a sheikah trial the entire island is something of a nod towards link's awakening where link also washes up on a strange island without any of his previous equipment reflecting this event's beach is named toronbo beach after toronto shores and the small mountain is named kaholet rock after caholint island back onto the mainland courage step obviously references courage a central theme of the zelda series and just north of here is breman peak named after the bremen mask for majora's mask maple point may be another nod to maple the witch but as it's in an area where most locations are named after types of tree it's unlikely the lenairu region north of here is another recurring zelda location named after nehru the goddess of wisdom nedra snowfield which sits in the shadow of mount la neru is named after the dragon nadra who often flies above the mountain pass north of here are a few locations named after places from the oracle games brinner plane is named after la brina the setting for ages and lodge room headland is named after holodrum the setting for seasons spool bite horron lagoon tom point and samasa plain are named after spool swamp horon village tom ruins and samasa desert from oracle of seasons and wintry island to the south is obviously named after winter perhaps even directly named after the woods of winter continuing north we find the tingle ankle knuckle and dafty islands named after tingle and his retinue ankle knuckle and david junior the places surrounding zora's domain are filled with references to previous games zora's domain is in itself a commonly recurring zelda location as is zora river ruto mountain precipice and lake are all named after princess ruto the sage of water from ocarina of time and luto's crossing is named after laruto the sage of earth from the wind waker oren bridge is named for auran a link between world's zora queen and the inogo bridge is named after the indiegogos a zora band from majora's mask rallis pond is named for prince rallis from twilight princess and zodobon highlands are named after ocarina of times king zora who's known in japanese as king zora dobon the 14th lulu mikao and toto lakes are named after band members from the indiegogos and jabu ridge references lord jabu jabu the zora guardian deity from ocarina of time rutala dam and the surrounding rutala river are named after rutella the zora queen from twilight princess there are a few non-zora related place names here too veiled falls after vale falls from the minish cap and tabal woods and taltal peak after tabal wasteland and telltale mountain from link's awakening down river from zora's domain are the flooded gaponga village ruins fittingly named after the gaponga swamp also from link's awakening the nearby linebeck island refers to linebeck from phantom hourglass and banan island is named after an island from the same game also from phantom hourglass is zors island after zors and mersey island nearby are a few more places named after the minish cap trilby valley and plane after trilby highlands thims bridge which reversed is smith the name of link's grandfather crenel hills peak after mount crenel pico pond after the picouri and minshi woods after minish woods north east of here is garrow pond which could call back to the don guerrero mask from majora's mask moving into accola there's a few more locations that reference link's awakening ulria grotto is named after ulrera the old man who gives link hints as is ulri mountain and just nearby is canalette ridge named for canalette castle ukuku plains references ukuku prairie tauren wetland is named after taran and malin bay nearby is named after marin there's also kippura pass after the ao kapoor gabora and rock woods which just like its japanese name octa is named after octorocks there's also orderak quarry just next to the spring of power which gets its name from the dragon din rahl's japanese name looming over akala is death mountain another staple zelda landmark here we have darb pond a reference to darbus from twilight princess medingo pool and not to medigoron golo river gorko lake and gortram cliff after golo gorko and gortram from skywood sword goro cove after gorons in general or perhaps the way they speak the bridge of eldin is named after a bridge that appears in twilight princess though the two are entirely different lake darman refers to darmani from majora's mask and darunia lake is obviously named for darunia the sage of fire from ocarina of time [Music] korok forest is surrounded by lake mecca named after makkah the sage of wind from wind waker lake sarya and mido swamp are both named after kakiri from ocarina of time but less obvious is mount drina and the dreinin highlands the aldor foothills urch plane rohan plane and the elmer knolls which are named after drona aldo urch rowan and elmer korocks from the wind waker to the south roru hillside and the roaru settlement ruins obviously reference roru the sage of light from ocarina of time central hyrule is home to a few of the most extensive references to previous games like the ranch ruins named after lonlon ranch from ocarina of time and the ruins line up almost perfectly nearby are the marbe village ruins and marbe plains both named for mabe village from link's awakening the romani plains are named after either romani the character or romani ranch the location both from majora's mask and mount gustaf is named after king gustav from the minish cap there's a group of bridges named after bosses from zelda too rebenae bridge after rebanac or said bridge after horsehead helmhead bridge after helmet head and carrock bridge after carrock jumping over to hebra there really isn't much in terms of naming references many locations here are just named after species of bird which is fitting considering rito village just to the south the village itself is surrounded by lake tottori derived from rito kalami bridge is named after kamali the rito prince from the wind waker mount rome to the south east is a clearer reference to breath of the wild itself and its king rome bosforamus hyrule just nearby lindor's brow and upland lindor are named for linda a korok from the wind waker the series scablands owe their name to ceres a sage from a link between worlds and the breach of demise is of course named after demise the king of demons from skyward sword and that's it as far as i can tell that's every location name in breath of the wild that references something from a previous game in the series personally i love how games like the minish cap and the oracles are given just as much attention as the bigger entries in the series and with the exception of the four swords games every single zelda game has at least one location named after it it's a fun relatively subtle way to connect this new hyrule with what came before like i said earlier i hope i haven't missed any but if i have let me know in the comments down below this video wouldn't have been possible without the brilliant zelda wiki link in description which has a breakdown of the nomenclature of nearly all of the places in hyrule thanks for watching this video if you liked it leave a like or subscribe if you haven't already for more zelda content cheers guys and i'll see you next time [Music] [Music] i
