My name is Amanda Grant. And I grew up in a polygamous family in Salt Lake City. My dad has three wives and over 30 children. I left The Order when I was 17 years old. Polygamy had a very big impact on my life. From going to preschool up to grade school, you're taught your whole life that polygamy is what you're going to do. Basically, in The Order, a father's love is conditional. I didn't even know who my dad was till I was eight. We had to call him Burl, 'cause he was so afraid of getting prosecuted for practicing polygamy. So the first time I tried to escape polygamy to leave the church, I was 14. Because they were already talking to me about getting married. I just didn't fit in with everyone else there. And I just didn't think it was normal, especially when they were all engaged to their cousins. And I just-- I looked at my cousins as my cousins. I didn't want to marry my cousins. So at 15, I met Eric. I fell in love with him. We didn't want to live the polygamist lifestyle. So, "I vow from this day forward"-- do I have to say your name? And at 17, I ended up leaving. We ended up leaving together. Since we left The Order, me and Eric got married. We have just had just a blast, just-- we really will wake up and just be like, what do we want to do today? Whatever we want. There-- there's no limits. And it is so nice to not have to worry that he's going to be with another woman, that he's thinking about getting another wife. And now that we've left together and I see how faithful Eric is, I am not even the tiniest bit worried about that ever. [music playing]
