all the parts of you that weren't yet here in yeshiva on heaven and in the yeshiva on earth with permission of the omnipresent one and with permission of the congregation we accept into our midst all who seek to pray whether righteous or unrighteous and all shall pray as one community this is our opening recitation upper and lower courts are joined divine and human are joined one into one we are joined with those who have crossed the boundary of sin and we are joined with the sinner aspects of ourselves tonight we seek atonement or at one minute dissolution of boundaries col nidre is a prayer about release from old commitments it says let our hearts be free of what we were so that we can re-examine ourselves and create ourselves anew we're here to let go of our reputations and our certainty to soften our outlooks and consider options with openness we're here with compassion for ourselves and with admiration for what is indeed admirable in us so that we can sift through our gifts and reconfigure ourselves emerging from yom hakipurim closer to our high dreams of who we might be let's rise page 352 as our torahs are taken from the aron kodesh orazade [Music] [Music] or is [Music] [Applause] is [Music] is [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] i lie my life yashicoa to harley rothstein and udel hubermann i now invite dave kaufman and martin gottfried the co-chairs of the ore shalom board to share some words of inspiration get down it's uh it's been two years since we all gathered for air of yom kippur here at the jcc and a worldwide pandemic was not on most anyone's mind and the full impact of our changing climate especially in this little corner of paradise seemed many years away but here we are in quite a mess and to quote one of my favorite movies as the sheriff in no country of old men said if this ain't it'll have to do until the mess gets here in what seemed like a blink of an eye our world faced profound change things we took for granted like saturday services in our beloved by it followed by the comfort and warmth of our potluck kiddushes were gone many of the ties that bound us were broken but through that stress our true strength emerged we saw the real value of this community as it acted swiftly to make sure all were cared for transformed itself overnight to a virtual cahall and figured out ways under the strange new rules that we're still under to share in the joyous and somber moments of our lives throughout this long and tumultuous journey our congregation has remained dedicated to the vision that is or shalom to be a jewish spiritual community that is creative egalitarian traditional and participatory keeping to this idea is very challenging even in the best of times but through your preserve perseverance and support we are once again here entering the holiest of holy days with much to be thankful for and here's just the brief list in the past little while we've been able to increase our membership we have a thriving adult education program that challenges and nourishes our minds and draws people in we've created collectively sophisticated and engaging virtual events we now have very many innovative programs for families with children we have an active revitalized econ alum committee reminding us all of our responsibilities to the world and most of all we have an amazing and dedicated agile staff led by our brilliant and creative rabbi who never fails to offer wisdom and guidance on our path to deeper understanding of our faith when hannah and ross moved here six years ago the community reset our own vision through an extensive community survey the board set a strategic goal to become a multi-generational synagogue that mission is not a unique one but it is important and it is difficult the leaders of the scottish presbyterian church that now houses or shalom sold it because they failed to navigate that transition and their lesson is bittersweet for us was it what has it taken so far to create a multi-generational congregation well it takes services and programs and education that connect children and parents and singles and spiritual seekers and traditionalists and modernists and jews old and new and jews by birth and jews by choice we are blessed by the diversity of worshalum and by the people who find their spiritual home with us in the past 18 months in spite of not being able to meet in person rabbi hannah's exploring judaism program attendance has doubled and this year she's expanded the program adding prayer book hebrew and study of liturgy our master teacher matthew guindon arranges in messi and teaches programs that reach preschool pre-simcad mitzvah simchat mr students and zoocia adult education classes truly a multi-generational educational program the board and membership committee have welcomed over 20 new members from far and wide people who find or shalom's diverse inclusive yet always questioning approach to jewish life to be one that matches their own spiritual and life path so how do we continue to pass this small gem of jewish renewal to the next generation by making you an offer you can't refuse a paid for building on the vancouver's east side a debt-free financial book an active engaged staff that keeps everything running in a board and congregation that knows the future will not be the same as the past we're in our first generational transition from or shalom's founding generation to their parents to their children it's time to take the next step to take on committee volunteering to come onto the board to help set the vision of what jewish life will be in these strange times as we move into the future like you the or salom founders had jobs and families to take care of but there's no better way to show your commitment to jewish life than to help shape the very vessel for the community you want your family your children yourself to grow up in looking ahead at our collective future and the generations that must follow our housing task force led by john first has been moving forward on plans to modify our beloved by it to address the current problems and to make ready for the next decades basically a kind of if you build it they will come using funds donated specifically for this the task force has hired an architectural firm who has almost completed all the preparatory work necessary for our city's very complex permit permitting process in the next few weeks we'll be rolling out to all of you this exciting project for the future i'm sure martin agrees with ewan agrees with me when i say being the co-chairs of our shalom is not always easy but it is almost always rewarding we are blessed with people who give we are blessed with givers givers of time givers of expertise givers of prayers givers of music givers of art and of course givers of money we're grateful to all who contribute in the myriad ways that keep or shalom's lights on figuratively literally spiritually and financially may the year 5782 bring the world to a better place fatima [Music] is going to begin on page 360 in our maksurim let's rise [Music] i [Music] [Music] [Music] oh [Music] we can be seated [Music] um [Music] foreign [Music] um [Music] [Music] i [Music] i [Music] [Music] i [Music] is [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] oh is [Music] the [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] music [Music] [Music] is [Music] okay [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] page 366. [Music] [Music] [Music] me [Music] [Music] family [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] is [Music] [Music] [Music] is [Music] [Music] page 368 and let's rise [Music] [Music] god foreign [Music] is [Music] i [Music] [Music] i [Music] oh [Music] [Music] is [Music] [Music] i [Music] oh [Music] now within the silent amira we'll encounter the first of this year's asham news and al qaeda our confessional wrapping on our chests with a fist to wake us up to accountability the prophet jeremiah offers stand at the roads and consider look into the paths of the past see which is the road of goodness walk it and find tranquility so foreign [Music] i [Music] i [Music] [Music] i [Music] i am [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] i [Music] you [Music] [Music] a [Music] [Music] a [Music] i am haberman blessed are you spirit of the world who has given us life sustained us and brought us to this moment in the more strictly traditional context in which i was raised shahakayanu was a bracha said at very specific times on the first day of a holiday after the candles were lit or after the first kiddush upon eating a new fruit a fruit newly in season or one we'd never eaten before and also when we wore garments for the first time shakianu moments were potent i can still remember the tingle in my child's body later when i emerged into a broader jewish world i encountered many extensions of this tradition renewals of liturgy such that this expression of gratitude was offered more freely as it fit life's moments shakianu the thank you for things new and special seem to mark every occasion when our tradition actually offers so many specific blessings for the beauty of the natural world and the beauty we find in other people upon hearing good news in gratitude of god's love or when insurmountable obstacles seem to fall away did you know that the blessing for reuniting with loved ones after a prolonged period is baruch blessed are you who raises the dead shocking really a much more visceral gratitude but that's the blessing that ross and i recited joining hands with our children when we finally assembled in july for our first meal together after 18 months of separation the blessing is primal and it fit the intensity of our grip on one another around that table for me having heard shahianu so often it had lost its power over time but kovit has restored my feeling for it as i find myself moved to thank god for incremental returns to social contact first dinner guest in our home the first return to the san francisco bay first harmony sun the first in person gatherings of our community i've found myself reciting under my breath more often in recent months than over the course of many years prior so when a group of women clergy with whom i'm connected floating floated the idea of writing sermons on the blessing i was intrigued i wanted to do a little toshuba in the words of the psalmist god has lifted me high upon a rock and now i can see through to what is true i've been judgmental of what i thought to be a bracha gone prosaic and i understand differently now it's not chilling or raw it's a generous expansive philosophical blessing about rolling with time enduring the long haul and making the most of life we're living in heightened awareness of the precariousness of life stirred by our own joie de vivre grateful for our arrival to moments that might in other years have gone unacknowledged we're finding more meaning and expressing more gratitude from one moment to the next and this three-fold prayer expresses all of that we're saying thank you for my life thank you for what carries me through this difficult passage and thank you for our arrival at what this moment has to offer including hope for the future the word shah yanu shares a hebrew word root with life blessed are you for giving me life so often in jewish traditional contexts we're taught life is torah or life is for the sake of transforming the world and i wouldn't deny these worthy dedications still as i contemplate this blessing i gravitate to a more basic interpretation one expressed so beautifully by abraham joshua heschel drawing on hasidic sensibilities went in affirming just to be is a blessing just to live is holy elohim thank you for bringing us to life at present we don't take just being or just living for granted staying alive as required conscious effort kavanagh directed intention strict keva adherence to new and evolving boundaries and protocols we turn jewish texts and ideas over and over the hafocha deriving meaning in them for our own time during the pandemic we're drawn to the shot the essential value of human life and we see in mundane miracles a beauty many of us did not perceive with such poignancy in easier times in this we're not so removed from the sensitivities of the third century rabbis who conceived the blessing in an era when awareness of one's mortality was a regular part of life originally the shakianu blessing really was gratitude for basic survival the daily morning blessings which these rabbis also conceived teach us to notice the miracles of every day as we name the gift of awakening from the little death of sleep we didn't die in the night and we say thank you for bringing me back into a natural world whose rhythms i can count on into my faculties of discernment and thank you for the continuing workings of the intricate internal organs that maintain my life indeed living with scarcity the ancient rabbis were quite set quite attainable thresholds for what is worthy of blessing how much food is enough to warrant a grace after meals our halacha says moti knows a morsel the size of an olive so how extraordinary must a moment be to be deemed a shakianu moment at present less and less and that's not a bad thing it might it means we're more aware of what's truly precious it might mean that we seek more frequent connection with spirit acknowledging that preciousness lo hamedtim yaha lucha says the psalmist the dead can't praise god even as the pandemic has heightened my appreciation for my every breath my every heartbeat what separates me from those who no longer walk the earth is not just my beating heart it's my capacity to communicate gratitude and my capacity for awe in the face of small wonders that's what it means to be alive generally speaking we enter this yom kippur with a keener awareness of our mortality who will live and who will die it's a question now many degrees closer to our lived experience and what makes for the possibility of greatness in human beings in this moment is our very real brush with death our bravura has cracked we're humbled suddenly noticing our blessings with the closeness of death all around us we're all the more aware that earthly life mortal life is the great opportunity so thank you for giving us life i'm alive but what sustains me the word kiyamanu shares a root with kyung enduring what nurtures us keeps us going when the going is rough what are our resources we need a whole new string of blessings for the kiamanu miracles small and large thank you god for the comforts of slippers and warm baths and my husband's cooking thank you god for the vitalizing smells of rain and soil and fruit and flowers in my garden thank you for the expanse of ocean water only a few blocks away that transports me and helps me melt into the one thank you for spiritual vehicles of song and prayer thank you for romantic love and parental love and friendship and creative collaboration thank you for opportunities to teach and to serve thank you for the anchor of responsibility to others thank you for the reprieve of sleep and dreams thank you for my memory thank you for new yorker cartoons thank you for the outlet of art making and its sheer pleasure thank you for the capacity to cry i speak for myself in this litany our resources are as varied and unique as we each are but our world is indeed filled with resources and the gift of enumerating such blessings is our potential connection to what is enduringly right in the world just thinking of what sustains us could help to regulate us when we're thrown off by all that's going wrong i'm grateful to be alive and i'm grateful to feel alive feeling alive is for many of us the most important bit acknowledging that we're wired to affirm our vitality express expressly identify what animates us and when when circumstances threaten to numb us whether by loss or in loneliness or disillusionment for the sake of our psycho spiritual health we must each ask ourselves what nourishes us how do we find the strength lakum also from the same route to stand after this exhausting year whatever it is that supports our love of life is what brings us kigianu thank you for giving us life for sustaining us and thereby supporting our arrival to the now we're here all of us having been brushed by loss still here celebrating our survival and our continuing agency celebrating not with the excesses of a secular new year but in the truest sense of the jewish new year taking ourselves seriously spending these hours in awareness of just how important our deeds and misdeeds really are in dr heschel's words every moment of life is a new arrival a new beginning the secret of spiritual living he says is in the ultimacy of every moment the seek in the sacred uniqueness of every moment in its once and for allness our challenge in every moment is not how to continue but how to exalt our existence right now how to be exactly where we are and raise up the unique potential of this time even as that potential may be born of personal grief societal abuses and human hate or chauvinism this blessing we're so drawn to is a mindful hiney here i am prayer just as shihakayanu invites awareness of the miracle of being a living human with capacity for gratitude just as ki yamanu invites awareness of all that arouses and supports our vitality as joyful responsible fulfilled creatures so higianu lasman invites us to seize the day fear of death i think results from the worry that we have not seized the day that we don't have enough to show for our lives that we've not constructed our lives as works of art not taken advantage of the great opportunity the psalmist asks how can i repay the holy one of blessing for all their bountiful dealings with me if gratitude is what i feel this is the great question and it behooves us as part of the evaluations we engage in during the days of ah to ask this question to what are the ways in which we reciprocate the gift of grace the gift of our privilege each of these is surely a cluster of nekodetovot particles of goodness that or shalom is crafting in our homemade thank you present our delivery of goods and services to one another in times of need the creation of prayer chant and meditation groups to accompany one another's longing healing and mourning dialogue circles and readings in the sanctuary to hear one another's stories and honor one another's experiences heart-centered study of sacred texts special video outreach to the little ones when we can't sing and play and dance with little torahs in person welcome of newcomers with icebreaker games and zoom meals and weekly virtual sabbath blessings detailed elucidation of opportunities for activism in the greater community fundraising and lobbying to secure a canadian home for our next wave of refugees careful choosing of stockhold virtual celebration of our youth as they come of age and of the babies born during this period it turns out that experiencing our lives in in their essence as blessings and expressions of holiness leads most naturally to living in torah and for the sake of repairing our world even as we strive to do better we are assembling an extraordinary offering to return in return for god's bountiful dealings with us god on the throne of judgment surely noticed on rosh hashanah and having moved to the throne of mercy at sundown this evening i imagine god right now happily unwrapping our gifts thank you for my life thank you for what sustains my spirit thank you for the opportunity to imbue this moment with goodness i'm alive i will surely die god has given and god will take away so may i and may we taste the glory available to us may we repay god's grace with our lives as we live them serving as conduits of blessing receiving and giving away in this moment and in every moment because in proximity to death we are learning how to live so yom kippur is a process from cole nudre to naila we ask may our supplications rise up this evening may our pleas arrive yavo to the heavenly realm by dawn and may our songs be heard and we ourselves seen and taken into account by our god of compassion as the gates close tomorrow at dusk a new ya'ala page 386 please rise [Music] [Music] oh [Music] foreign [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] three [Music] you [Applause]
