[Music] a 20 year old script from the author of jurassic park led to the creation of one of the most highly regarded and longest-running dramas in television history and launched the careers of george clooney and juliana margulis in the process you are watching a new episode of how they changed and here are some rare known facts about er that have been properly sanitized it began as a michael crichton movie it was about 180 pages long and featured more than 100 characters creighton was a medical student at harvard medical school in the 1960s and john carter was the stand-in for steven spielberg was an executive producer on the project that coupled with the fact that crichton had recently become a hot property following the success of jurassic park helped the pair successfully and her chemistry with clooney so the producers opted to keep her alive and employed an abandoned possibly haunted hospital was used for the first episode 24 hours was shot at the former lenda vesta hospital in los angeles boyle heights neighborhood it was built in the early 1900s as a hospital for santa fe railroad employees the movie's end of days and outbreak also shot scenes there the people angeles county general hospital's emergency room at warner brothers studios in burbank custom crew took four trips a year to chicago to shoot the exteriors since er was sat in chicago it was important clooney was known to play football with a very expansive silicone baby prop lasalle asked producers to end his character's relationship with alex kingston's lasalle made producers and dr benton's romance with dr cody because he was uncomfortable with what the interracial relationship was saying to african americans lasalle claimed he was uncomfortable that his relationships with black women on the show were dysfunctional whereas his one relationship with a white character was not some actors asked to be killed off maura tierney who played dr abby lockhart from 1999 to 2009 asked to be killed off instead she was given a juicy enough storyline that she was okay with sticking around until the end of the series when edwards told john wells that he was leaving the show after eight seasons wells said that dr greene was too important a character to just walk away from the show so he asked edwards do you mind if we kill him and i was like nope you've gotta do what's best for the show so that's okay when kelly martin decided her character lucy knight wasn't working for her she requested that her departure be made big david krumholz was feared after his guest spot the day after bistil my heart aired on the 10th of february 2000 crumb hulls whose character paul fatally stabbed lucy went out in burbank and went shopping in a mall or something the actor recalled to the los angeles times i got recognized at least five or six times from that episode and people were actually frightened i couldn't have been more unassuming to those people that probably were surprised to see the producers estimated that over the course of the series they had procured approximately 1300 sets of hospital scrubs the show saved lives a 28-year-old woman in texas discovered she had a brain tumor because her tongue went out to the side just like dr greenstone did when his brain tumor returned the woman's tumor was caught early and she survived a usc study found that subjects were 65 percent more likely to change their eating habits if they watched the episode about obesity and a 2002 study by the karza family foundation discovered viewers increased their knowledge of hpv and contraception after viewing episodes of the show eur is the most emmy nominated show in television history the show earned a total of 124 emmy nominations across its 15th season round and won 22 of them including the outstanding drama series award for season 2 and the best supporting actress award for margulis in season one more performers on this show have received emmy nominations across the lead supporting and guest actor categories than for any other series george clooney had a sneaky method for remembering his lines ever noticed that dark ross spent a lot of time looking down at patients in their hospital beds at clipboards or hanging his head that's because clooney developed a technique for remembering all of his complex medical dialogue which involved writing his lines and props so that he could consult them during scenes according to pi bs's pioneers of television he started doing this while shooting er and movies at the same time in order to deal with a workload that iconic basketball hoop was george clooney's idea the addition of the basketball hoop outside the ambulance bay at county general ended up creating a key new location for the show but originally george clooney had the idea simply because he liked to shoot a few hoops to unwind between takes he asked for the hoop to be installed on the burbank studio lot but it ended up in an area where it could be picked up by the camera and so it was incorporated into the show season 14 was supposed to be the last one by the 2007-2008 writers guild of america strike cut the episode countdown so much that their producers knew they wouldn't have long enough to give the show a full standoff for that reason nbc agreed to bring er back for the 15th and final season which ran from september 2008 through to april
