a few weeks ago i went on my first trip to crater of diamond state park [Music] i was wrapped up in the excitement of finding my own diamond and ready to spend a few days on the crater making it happen luckily i was surrounded by people ready to do the same thing the excitement can be overwhelming as you walk onto the field and try and decide how to get started here are five tips on how to have an enjoyable first trip to crater of diamonds state park before we get started my name is laura and in 2020 i quit my job to travel the world since it's 2020 i've instead been using my time to get into different adventures here in the u.s including creator of diamond state park so make sure that you click subscribe to join me on my next adventure and as you find this video helpful make sure that you give it a thumbs up and with that we'll kick off with number one which is research all of the research that you do now will pay dividends when you're at the park you're off to a great start by watching youtube videos i'll put a link to the park website in the description below you'll want to read the rules and verify the park hours it was open from 8 a.m to 4 p.m while i was there you'll also want to check the weather for the days before you go and the days while you're there you'll want to look up the park map and start to mark a few spots where you're interested in digging overall research will help you get your bearings and help you make a plan for the first day tip number two is to decide how you're going to search for diamonds there's three main ways to search for diamonds the most accessible is surface hunting because you look for diamonds that are sitting on the surface of the field this is a popular method after big rainfalls because the soft dirt will be washed away revealing the diamonds this is actually how many of the largest diamonds are found the second option is dry sifting for this method you sift through the material removing dirt and rocks and hopefully finding your diamond the third option is wet sifting wet sifting is effective because you use the water to wash away the dirt and sort the rocks by size diamonds are heavier than the surrounding volcanic rock so if you wet sift it brings the diamonds to the bottom of the screen then when you flip the screen all the heavy rocks and diamonds will sit on top of your gravel i've linked my video on wet sifting below but you should also check out other youtube videos on the same technique that takes us to number three after deciding how you're going to look for diamonds it's time to determine what equipment you need in 2020 the park was not renting equipment this may be an option in future years but for now you'll need to bring all the equipment into the park with you if you're surface hunting you may want a kneeler pad a chair and tools to turn over the dirt on the surface for dry sifting you'll want to add in a screen a shovel and a pair of gloves for wet sifting i took a few buckets a small shovel and sifting screens you can purchase screens online before you go i'll add the link to the description there are also a few locals who sell screens i stopped by lovejoy screens on my way through murfreesboro you can also buy equipment at the local hardware store you can take wagons into the crater but be sure not to line up more equipment than you can manage i would also recommend writing your name on everything that you take once you get to the crater all of the tools look the same you don't want to lose your equipment or mistakenly take someone else's now that you have a plan and your tools it's time to prepare for the day the diamond mine is extremely exposed the wash stations and a few resting spots are the only shade you'll have while digging so be prepared for the weather a hat and sunscreen are a great idea you'll also want to take a lot of water lunch and some snacks you can add everything to the bag that you take with you into the crater i was happy to see that the visitor center has reasonably priced drinks if you run out on the same note you should make sure you're taking regular breaks especially in the heat and humidity that you'll experience in arkansas there are heat related injuries every year and getting exhausted is certainly going to get in the way of you having fun while you're there and that takes us to number five which is know what you're getting into the park averages around one diamond per day being ready to spend the day digging and sifting to find the one waiting for you diamond hunters look for gravel they often go to places where the rain has washed away the dirt to expose more gravel and then search and wet sift that material the common places are the east and west drains but these washouts happen across the diamond mine to find these spots look for exposed rocks and a concentration of small gravel overall know that the more dirt you look at and sift through the more chance you have of finding one so take some gloves and get ready to spend the day digging sifting and searching for your new diamond i linked both of my other videos on crater of the diamond state park in the description let me know in the comments what you're most excited about during your trip this is just the beginning of a very fun and memorable trip good luck and let me know what you find be sure to hit that subscribe button it'll
