hey how's it going today I'm going to show you something really cool this is actually a crown molding return but it's my favorite crown molding return and it's what I call a fancy return and it's this piece right here so in this video I'm going to show you how to make this crown molding return stay tuned [Music] [Music] now the first thing I'm going to do since this is just a sample I'm showing you this technique I'm gonna go to a 22 and a half degree cut and then I'm just gonna cut this as far over and we're gonna pretend like this is our actual piece so we'll go ahead and cut that and when I have crown molding when I'm cutting crown molding upside down and backwards with the crown stops the piece is actually upside down and backwards so it'll be up like that on the wall now we're gonna pretend like this is our piece so this is already good to go now I'll show you how to make the return that we're going to glue on to our piece all you have to do is leave your saw at 22 and 1/2 degrees and make a cut on a piece of material so like I just said this we're gonna pretend like this is our piece I'm gonna put that to the side and I made a 22 and 1/2 degree cut to the right now I'm gonna swing saw to the left 22 and 1/2 degrees I'm gonna line up my blade right with a tip of this cut you can see the tip of that cut I want it to be this is what I call a tip to tip cut so I have this miter cut and I want this miter to go right to the tip and I'll make that cut right now that's going to leave me with this small piece here and this is that like I said this is upside down and backwards so it's gonna be like that so this is what you shouldn't should end up with after that first tip to tip cut now since my you can get a look at this since my mitre or since my return is a left handed return that means it's ending on the left hand side of a run then I need to make sure when I cut this next tip the tip cut that it's a left handed tip to tip cut so I'll show you what I mean by that I'm gonna leave the mitre saw in this left handed position with its wings to the left out of 22 and 1/2 degree cut and make that cut put my scrap to the side and now instead of like I did on the first tip to tip cut going to 22 and 1/2 degrees I'm gonna go to 0 degrees right there and the same exact thing I'm going to do a tip to tip cut where this is this zero degree cut is going to line up on the tip of that 22 and a half degree cut this is scrap and this is what we end up with we have this piece being glued these two tip to tip cuts being glued together and then in turn being glued on there and you can see that's a nice fancy return so I'm going to glue that up and show you how that looks so I don't have to sit there and hold it the whole time and like I always say the CA glue is your best friend one when you want to join very small intricate pieces like this especially with MDF and probably urethane crown moldings some join those up together get them squeezed together tightly and those are good to go we'll let that cure for a second and you can imagine when your crown molding is gonna end you have this nice return that's not just a hard 90 degree to 45 s it's kind of just eases into the wall so if this was on the wall it would look like that you would have this base of the saw representing the wall and the fence of the saw representing the ceiling and it would look like that it would flow over real nicely so there you have it that's how easy it is to cut what I call a fancy crown molding return this is a lot better looking than your typical 90 degree for 245 minors in my opinion this is one of several returns that I can show you but this is my favorite one and it's a just to give you a quick review we have our long piece with an outside 22 and 1/2 degree cut a tip to tip 22 and a half degree cut for the middle piece and then a tip to tip 22 and a half in a 0 degree cut for the final ending piece hopefully you learned something from this video thanks so much for watching and I will see you next time take care [Music]
