you know for your last hurrah i don't know if you've heard but emily in paris was nominated for a bunch of awards [Music] here we go i really didn't want to make another video on emily in paris i swear i thought i was done with it after the first one call me crazy but i somehow wrongfully assumed that a 24 minute long video was going to be enough to explain why this show doesn't deserve to exist but here we are there's even more to say and it hasn't even been a month since my last video you guys are starting to get on my nerves because the day i posted my first video it was announced that emily in paris was nominated for a couple of golden globe awards the show was nominated for best tv comedy and lily collins was nominated for best actress which was a reveal that was so ridiculous and so outrageous that the internet's general reaction was essentially let's be honest okay i mean let us be [ __ ] honest this is a crucifixion this is political and don't tell me it's not people were mad and i mean really mad twitter exploded when the nominations were announced with thousands of people pointing out how unbelievable it was that emily in paris which is famous for being bad was nominated over the absolutely fantastic i may destroy you in fact the announcement was so appalling that a writer on emily in paris deborah copacan wrote an article on the guardian admitting that i may destroy you deserve the nomination over her own show i'm a writer on the show i try to avoid reading its criticism but i don't live under a rock it never occurred to me that our show would be nominated did i take the criticism of the show personally of course who wouldn't but also not i've never been remotely close to seeing a golden globe statue up close let alone being nominated for one but that excitement is now unfortunately tempered by my rage over cold snub that i may destroy you did not get one golden globe nod is not only wrong it's what is wrong with everything jesus i don't think i'm surprising anyone when i say that emily in paris is probably one of the most undeserving entries when it comes to winning awards and it's not just because i don't like the show there are a lot of shows that i don't personally like but i completely understand why they're successful and i applaud it it's just not for me and that's okay but that's not emily in paris there's nothing you can tell me to convince me that emily in paris is a good show it's not the reason why it's so frustrating that it was nominated for a golden globe isn't because it's a terrible show with awful writing and boring characters it's because emily in paris is a show with highly questionable values that are now being validated by some of the highest prizes in the industry all of the major issues pointed out with the show by audiences and journalists around the world all the problematic tropes the show is known for the casual racism the condescending and at times hateful portrayal of french culture the degrading cliches and you know the fact that in mid to late 20s emily has sex with an underage boy and that it's played off as a joke all of it is now being recognized as being so brilliant that it deserves a [ __ ] award and i can't even say i'm surprised by it which is even sadder i'm disappointed but not surprised if you don't know darren starr created emily in paris and he's also the creator of sex and the city which was a beloved hbo series that was also insanely racist transphobic and flat out claim that bisexuality was not a thing and the show was applauded for six seasons and two movies and it's also being brought back for a seventh season on hbo max this year hollywood loves its shows about attractive white americans who hate everything that isn't american or white so now the most criticized and disliked tv series of 2020 is nominated for two golden globes [ __ ] yipikaya and i know what you're thinking you're like this can't be possible clearly something is wrong here right there must have been a mistake well you're kind of right something is wrong here incredibly wrong i might add but it's not a mistake let me explain you see there's this thing called the hfpa the hollywood foreign press association jesus that's way too long i'm just to call it the hfpa the hfpa is a non-profit organization that regroups journalists and photographers who report about american media and entertainment in outlets outside of the united states it was founded in los angeles in 1943 and currently the hfpa has a total of 87 members why is that important well because the 87 members of the hfpa are the people who run and vote on the golden globe awards and it's been the case for the last 78 years so what's the issue here the issue is that there has been a lot of concern about the hfpa for the past few years it seems like an increasing amount of people both inside and outside of the industry are doubting the integrity of the members and many reports and investigations have stated that special treatment is all that's truly needed to get yourself a shiny award statue and it appears that the hfpa is an organization that not only has very shady practices that may or may not violate irs guidelines but is also largely known to be corrupt and prone to accepting bribes in fact last year a journalist from norway whose name i'm not going to try to pronounce filed an anti-trust lawsuit against the hfpa that claimed the organization essentially functioned like a cartel allegedly taking money from studios on the regular all while working under a very specific code of silence the case was eventually dismissed but the reputation of the hfpa and the integrity of the golden globes as an awards ceremony have now become massive subjective doubt both in the eyes of industry people and more recently general audiences enter emily in paris emily in paris emily in paris i haven't had a chance to discuss the craziness in the press what do you think of emily in paris emily in paris is the most talked about show on netflix this show is cringy as [ __ ] okay others lamenting flat characters all by good looking ones and no plot on february 21st 2021 about two weeks after the golden globes nominations were announced and the internet went up in flames the los angeles times broke a very interesting story claiming that the producers of emily and paris at paramount studios allegedly took part in corruption to get the show nominated for the awards this just sounds like a bad episode of scandal according to their investigation in 2019 paramount flew 30 members of the hfpa to paris to visit the set of the show they were apparently treated to a five-star hotel stay in rooms that cost over fourteen hundred dollars a night a five-star wine and dine experience a lunch and meeting at the insanely private musee des arfuran and a whole lot of other dreamy [ __ ] you will never experience because you're poor they were literally offered an all-inclusive vacation to paris by the producers of the show and one of the hfpa members who was flown there even told the la times they were quote treated like kings and queens long story short the allegation here is that a million paris bought its way to the golden globes by bribing the voters and all things considered i actually think it's kind of hilarious that the reason why this might be the end of the hfpa and the golden globes as we know it is that emily in paris is such a mediocre show that when it was nominated the entire world just collectively went yeah no that's [ __ ] something suspicious here the fact that the show being nominated while everyone is very aware of how incompetent it is is what prompted the la times to investigate this year's nomination is just too funny to me it's also relevant to mention that the hfpa has a reputation of being a little racist and a couple days ago maher tatna the former president of the hfpa admitted in an interview with variety that the organization has not had a single black member in over 20 years wow it's like emily and paris and the hfpa were made for each other love has no bounds left that for them and it's not difficult to believe the fact that 2020's most acclaimed tv shows and movie starring a cast of predominantly black people got completely snubbed is a good indication of that i may destroy you was snubbed along with its entire cast zendaya's universally acclaimed performance in malcolm and marie was completely ignored the five bloods was not even looked at and israel's insecure might as well not exist at this point and it's not limited to people of color the most frustrating part of all this to me is that none of these award shows are interested in nominating actors on emily in paris that aren't american you know being a show that takes place in france they did bring a number of french actors on board but they've just been completely ignored here and i'm not saying they all deserved it emily in paris is not exactly known for great acting actually emily in paris is not known for a great anything however filipino huabouriou outperformed everyone in this show by a landslide there isn't a single performance in the show that even comes close to what she did with the character of sylvie most of the show's charisma comes directly from her she absolutely nailed her role she might be the only positive thing about the entire show but she's french so she didn't get a single nomination instead lily collins got one for best actress in a comedy and look i said it in my last video i really like lily collins she's the only reason why i started watching the show in the first place but i'm sorry her as emily is just not that good i do not understand how she was nominated over philippines clearly the producers must have made a special demand for her to the hfta hello oh lily collins is actually a producer on emily in paris and she's been bragging about it for months well isn't that convenient okay i'm reaching here but it's just because despite the fact that i do think lily collins is a good actress i just don't believe for a second that her performances emily deserved any attention i will say that ashley park deserved her ccta nomination though in my last video i took a lot of shots at her character mindy who i absolutely cannot stand she spends the whole show just making sex puns and serving as a way for white writers to make racist comments through the mouth of a non-white character but ashley park's performance as mindy is actually quite solid she really brought an energy to the character that was much needed and she deserves recognition for it good job ashley now go use your talents elsewhere you deserve much better than emily and paris look the golden globes really shot themselves in a foot here but if we're getting anything positive out of it is that this weird controversy paired with what happened with the grammy awards and the weekend a few months ago is making general audiences realize more and more that award shows are all [ __ ] and have no merit whatsoever it's an outdated practice that is only valued by older people and has largely lost relevancy in the past decade hell even the oscars have lost the trust of the public in the last couple of years and along with an overwhelming majority of award ceremonies out there they have been struggling to get people to watch their shows with ratings hitting a new low every single year people just don't care anymore because really what does it mean to win an award why do we put them on such a pedestal they mean nothing you have a bunch of people in a room who have an opinion and they vote because for some reason we've decided their opinions matter more than others and they capitalize on that mentality and monetize their opinions with these multi-million dollar shows where they give an artist a little statue and say there you go feel validated now and it worked for like 80 years jesus christ but i genuinely think the time of award shows is going through a slow and painful death i think soon enough they're gonna be a thing of the past which seeing how those organizations work behind closed doors and how they favorize racist content just for the sake of making more money is actually not that bad of a thing anyways emily and paris didn't actually win the awards at the time of recording this video the golden globes just happened a few hours ago and everybody online is already talking about how much of a disaster it was but the only thing emily and paris won throughout the entire show is a good old-fashioned rose from tina fey during the opening monologue emily in paris is nominated for best tv series musical or comedy and i for one can't wait to find out which it is french exit is what i did after watching the first episode of emily in paris moral of the story emily in paris is still shitty and racist and offensive don't be like the hfpa and stop supporting award shows and their shady practices [Music] you
