hey guys my name is christine i am a mom to four kids wife to a dude and i like to store food in my house and eat lots of carbs today i'm going to give you an updated tour of all of my food storage in my house and we're going to start down here in my mechanical room i didn't build my house so i didn't really have any say in the way that it was set up and my mechanical room which houses my hvac system over here and my water heaters way over on the other side and the drain in the center ended up creating a very very large room there's not a lot you can do with the mechanical room because it slopes to the middle i have a drain i have things over here i have things over here so it became the storage room i've been storing food way before it was cool to do as it is these days i've just always been taught that it was good to have a stockpile of food for an emergency of some kind for a long time people thought i was kind of crazy i mean emergency could be all kinds of different things a loss of a job that happened to my friend once and she was able to use her food to cut their grocery bill when they didn't have a lot of money coming in you could have an illness to where maybe you can't go to the grocery store anymore the whole delivery thing is kind of a new thing like in my lifetime that makes it more convenient and then of course the most recent situation that nobody saw coming i don't want to call it a food shortage but let's say shopping shortage when everyone realized they were gonna have to purchase food for a month or something like that and then the shelves were empty of a lot of things for a long time now that everybody is seeing the benefits of having some food storage in their house let me show you what i currently have right now and then we can talk about how you can get started for not that much money in a way that's not overwhelming so first of all i have this chest freezer that i picked up from a garage sale for forty dollars ten years ago it works totally fine it's not fancy like it needs to be defrosted or whatever but i mean it works it keeps things cold and i keep all of my clearance bread in here and the light on it doesn't even work anymore so it's supposed to glow red if it's on and that it doesn't do that but whatever over here on this bookshelf actually come a little bit closer so you can see it better oh i have to use my ring light down here because it's so dark in this room okay are we focused we're focused yes this bookshelf actually my grandfather made for my mom when she went off to college i don't know that i'm ever gonna get rid of this bookshelf just because it has sentimental value i do like to keep on this shelf a lot of my dry goods pasta and cereals do you like to keep okay that's very heavy okay hang on i like to keep these animal animal cracker five are they five pounds four yeah almost five pound buckets when they're empty and then i use them to store things in so this one has wheat in it i have several of these around the room oh my gosh they're heavy and they fit on the shelf better set like sideways like this this one has i think a white kidney bean in it this one is just popcorn you know so we can make popcorn in our house this one's all pasta and i think contrary to what a lot of people might think is my family actually doesn't eat pasta very often when i buy these when they're on super super sale i don't go through them very fast i think we eat pasta maybe once every two weeks maybe if i think about it just because it's not i don't know it's not something i had a ton growing up and it's not something i gravitate towards on a normal basis although my recent like dollar tree challenges maybe would say different but pasta is just not a go-to for me so it tends to sit here and i have to remind myself to use it a little bit lower okay you can still see that i have kidney beans in this one and sticky rice it looks like in this one and this is a random container of some pasta some lentils some mung beans i don't love lentils i don't use them that often in fact that's probably going to be my first tip only store food that you will eat i've had a lot of people give me a lot of lentil recipes i've tried a lot of them i've tried to cook a lot of them i'm probably doing it wrong it's probably my bad i just don't love lentils i love a lot of the other beans but lentils and me we have a hate hate relationship so far lentils is not going to be one that i stock up on i had someone give me a bunch of millet at one time and i tried to cook with it and i don't like it millet doesn't make sense for me if you guys are gluten free the wheat here don't store wheat if you can't eat it so find things that you will eat and store that the next shelf down let me tell you down a bit down here i have all of my cereals and i well not these are books and i don't have a ton right now but i did pick up a couple of these honey nut cheerios for like 50 cents to 99 cents a box so i do keep the cereals down here and then down here on the bottom i have one more of these containers of uh pasta let's spin to the other side and let me show you what's in there here i have mostly canned goods you can kind of see this top shelf here which doesn't have a lot on it but i have rice some big tomatoes and some crackers and oil tomatoes beans soup and pumpkin canned salmon cream of chicken soup which is one more thing that i don't buy very often here's one of my big 50-pound bags of oats that i have not put into a bucket yet and i know i'm gonna have people ask me about like critters and bugs and that kind of thing now when i lived in texas in north carolina that would have absolutely been an issue but here in idaho it's kind of not we don't have the same kind of bugs that we had i mean we have like mosquitoes outside but we don't have the fire ants we don't have the mice we don't have i don't we don't have the spiders it's just a different environment i have never in the six years i've been in this house seen a bug or mouse in this storage room not once so it's not something i personally worry about but if you do live in an area like i mentioned before like texas or north carolina or somewhere where it's humid or by a field or something like that food grade storage buckets would be really really nice for that oh and i have sticky rice right there and some dried beans here below this is mostly like dishes and jars this shelf here next to me is all toiletries my roasting pan stuff like that so no real food on this one and we'll i'll spin you around to this lashel i don't know which side to stand on there how's that side okay i actually i feel like i'm very low on a lot of my stockpile stuff like i usually keep peanut butter right here and i don't have very much of that this is condiments seasonings salsas this is mostly my homemade jams and canned fruits and things like that this is probably the least amount of homemade canned jams and jellies i have had in years that's because this year we did not go pick cherries we did not go pick huckleberries i might do plums my neighbor always tells me to take her plums and they're not ready yet so i might do plums mostly i've been trying to go through the previous year's stuff i can't even give it away fast enough well i decided to pull back on the jam making for 2020 and try to clear out what i have and then start over again in 2020 2021 i do have a couple of canning videos like canning jams and i believe tomatoes so i'll leave those down in the description box for you if you want to go check them out they're pretty old and film quality is not as good but if you want general information or how i make these you can find that there i also have things like huge bulk cinnamon i found these huge taco seasonings at kroger before or smith's before they closed for only four dollars each so i picked up three of these never running out of taco seasoning everything else down here is mostly like look i just have empty shelves of my big rubbermaid storage containers i like to use more tupperware down here i think this bottom one is like oh you can't even see it but i have like haley's college dishes already packed up for when she leaves in a couple of years i think that's all the food storage that i have in this room let's go up and i'll show you my buckets that i have currently and my outside refrigerator i am outside in my garage and here are my current buckets and like i said i don't have critters or bugs in these ever plus these are food grade storage containers and they seal really really nicely so i have dog food in the top one i think that's sugar flour oatmeal rice and whole wheat kernels in this one i just keep these on the steps so i can because my fridge is like right there so i can easily refill my buckets that are in my pantry i don't actually just like pull these out and cook with these every day they just refill my accessible ones in the pantry sorry if i'm breathing hard i ran up the stairs from the basement okay i am in my garage and i know i have like a lot of bikes [Laughter] everywhere if you're new around here we do a lot of bike stuff uh maybe i'll link you to dave's channel down below if you want to check more of that out here is my outside refrigerator this is a 25 year old kitchenaid refrigerator that my dad gave me when they got a new one it's really old the ice maker and thingy doesn't work so we just put it out here yes it's a nice refrigerator but it was given to us this refrigerator side is like excess food drinks bulk items i'll keep my soy sauce big sauces and things i made this huge salad for dinner tonight so i put it out here because my inside fridge is kind of full i don't have a ton in here right now i feel like we've been going through the food that was in here pretty quickly but a lot of drinks like excess drinks nice to defrost a brisket or turkey or something and then over here i keep a lot of freezer meals and extra meat you can see my other brisket is up here i didn't know i still had that so that's interesting a bunch of chicken a freezer meal right there and then still a bunch of beef from when my brother butchered one of his cows i'm still trying to work through that some freezer milk chili some more meats down here i do like to keep an excess stock of meats and meals and things like that in my freezer back to the storage room and let's just talk about really quick how you can start a food storage slowly so it's not overwhelming so basically here's how you do it find something you like to eat just for argument's sake we're gonna call it spaghetti and you like to eat your pasta dish with mini penne let's do like two months okay so let's say you want to eat spaghetti once a week for two months well that's eight boxes of pasta depending on your family size so the next time you go to the store when it's a good price i would say 50 50 cents to 99 cents a box is a fairly good price get eight boxes of pasta then you pick your favorite pasta sauce and get eight jars of that find a storage space whether it's in your basement or under a bed or in a coat closet or in your pantry i have used all kinds of crazy places in the past put your eight and eight and you've gotten started already some other good things to start with is salt let's think about the things that we tried to find and couldn't find during the food shortages during the pandemic so you've got flour rice beans yeast cereals a bunch of canned foods canned tomatoes are so versatile it's one of my favorites you could do canned veggies if your family likes mac and cheese buy eight to 20 boxes of mac and cheese and put it in storage it doesn't have to be complicated it can be really really easy you go in and you buy five containers of salt and then you put them in your house and then the next time you buy two containers of yeast and put them in your house every week you slowly build up a pile of items that your family normally eats that you can then draw from if you can't find something or if something happens you can't make it to the store or whatever the emergency might be maybe you want to get oatmeal maybe you want to get grits cream of wheat powdered milk like dry powdered milk or maybe canned evaporated milk you want to stick with things that are mostly shelf stable the power could go out that actually happens in my area a lot during the winter that's my food storage currently i would say i have a lower amount than normal because i have been using it quite a bit and not replenishing it as the stores have been a little low on their supply i guess i'm going to type out a really short list of food storage items you can start with you don't have to get everything on the list it's just some ideas for you so i'll put that down below in the description box for you if you want to use it as a reference just to get started i hope you guys enjoyed this video and i will see you tomorrow for another day of vlogs by the way if you haven't subscribed or hit that like button do that now thanks so much
