good evening welcome to the summer season of Aquarius tonight we offer you a second chance to see David Belle's film profile of Elton John a remarkable man from the world of pop whom some would claim to be Britain's newest musical superstar Elton John recently returned from his second major tour of the United States where at one time he had four different LPS in the top 50 all in the same week act and that must put him on a par with the Beatles albums like tumbleweed connection and songs like 60 years on a prompting American as well as British critics to suggest that Elton John and his lyric writing partner Bernie Taupin could well be the most inventive and original team of songwriters since Lennon and McCartney judge for yourselves as we meet once again mr. Elton John it's a little bit funny this feeling inside not one of those who can easily hide I don't have much money but boy if I did I'd buy a big house where we both could lean if I was a sculptor but then again no or a man who makes potions in travel and shoe I know it's gotten but is the Beast I can't do a gift is my song and this one's for you Elton John was born 24 years ago in the heartland of London suburbia in Pinner Middlesex his real name is Reginald Kenneth Dwight and is the latest superstar to emerge on the pop scene you can measure a success by the fact that in America alone both his latest LPS have sold over a million copies in the week before his next American tour Aquarius talk to him at home watched him in rehearsals and filmed his last British concert appearance this year a sensational affair at the Fairfield hall Croydon I saw had lessons since I was four so I've been trying to a certain extent um the fact that I never studied very hard and I've had a certain classical background as well to a certain degree when I was at the London Academy music world humming music I was always pop mad anyway and I I played in a pub called the North of Hills hotel a weekends while I was at school to earn money to pay for an electric piano and get a microphone because I had the semi-pro group going at the time and then all of a sudden we we had an offer to turn professional and back all these sort of solo artists that came over from the states I think that both of both these through classical training and and that sort of soul bit I had an influence in me I mean a lot of our numbers are sort of various little gospel influenced and a lot of them have sort of got classical overturned and i suppo you get influenced subconsciously by everything you listen to I'd fix a barn girl let's go Oh Oh to conquer in a nap time you my mom so laughs Oh so that is going back home the comfort to comfort the school I've seen Spectre he has been there to disentangle I'm better people ain't my kind Oh all the movers is I've been to see now the wind has changed direction think I helped while you play looks kill my friends but it's not like over tea Oh my shoes Oh may God a disease that's his color I don't care I feel that it's all levan beeze there's heaven peace I probably only fair that I should introduce Bernie Taupin who never really faces without Bernie there wouldn't be any songs oh yeah well I live in a fantasy world but I'm just sort of happy the way I am and I want to stay that way you know I don't want to sort of be anything I mean not I don't want to be prolific but I don't want to sort of be the sort of savior of modern writing I just want to write what I want to write and for it to be appreciated and if it's appreciated you know people don't have to know me as long as they know my writing you know there's all lyrics here I live you know I just sit through them there's one year that I've sort of done the other day with tiny dancer which is about Bernie's girlfriend ah all right this was just sort of felt like I looked through all the roots now with the one I fancied writing mainly because I knew Bernie would like me to do this one because it's about his girlfriend reg has to write very fast because he can't sort of he hasn't got the patience to sort of spend hours or days on something you know I mean that's that's reg yeah I mean you look at it are the words blue jean baby la lady seamstress or the bad pretty eyed pirates smile you marry a music man ballerina as soon as you're through a ballerina you know it's not going to be fast it's got to be sort of gentle and and sort of quite slow so I mean like the way it's written here is it's a verse it's a course or mid light and a chorus then another verse I just sort of run it through and put two verses together then amid like then of course and then back to it so the first sort of thing is it's a very it happens very quickly sounds long but it's or this is sort of starts off bougie baby L a lady seamstress for the bay very amusing main ballerina you must have seen him dancing insane now she's in me always will be tying dancer in my hand this all changed to see to this first whoa hat feels unreal temple why do you know one knee I'll be you and you can hear me when I say stop slowly oh the clouds that tiny count the headlights a big sort of fast not a fast but it's quite heavy then the drums are in well they will be by that time and it is and then it gets drops again and goes back to that first foot it's just the way have to build and Paul is what is incredible I trust him implicitly I just sort of give him the number and we say what we want on it and he comes back the next day and well the day the arrangement the day of this session and just comes up with these arrangements on the Elton John album he came up with 60 years on and he came and he was nearly in tears and said I can't stand it it's awful you it's the worst thing I've ever done what can I do I've got all the musicians here and it's an awful so I said we'll just play me it yeah play and see what we can do and he came up with six years me and he really didn't like it and I think was incredible assets in there going mad and he regarded it as a sort of that 1930s horror movies walk me down to church when I'm 60 years of age when the ragged dog they gave me it's been 10 years in the grave seniorita play guitar play just for you my rosary has broken my beads of all slips me you hung up your Greek coding you laid down your gun you know all your fault and wasn't too much fun and the future you're giving me nothing for a gun I've no wish to be living sixty years I think the most interesting thing actually was again was on 60 years on because on that particular one he wanted to do the number but that was such a colossal orchestral track and when he told me he's going to do it I thought how the hell's he gonna produce that on stage because you know but he's just completely reworked it it's a completely new arrangement but it's as good and the thing is it contains the same high points that the high points are the same the dynamics are the same but it's just a different arrangement yes I'll sit with you and talk that your eyes live again I know my vintage Brielle's would be very much the same back it up play top load you the birds alone when you are passing through younger than me blow it stupid man Steve Brown is the reason that I don't really happen do you remember that Steve joined as a from new promotion man as a plugger and I was introduced through Lionel Conway who was the head of promotion here at that time and he's just said this is Steve Brown and we really didn't say much do we know when we first came you know it's just some promotion had nothing to do with songwriting or the songwriters and I came in and how it all started was Lionel play me some of the songs and I wasn't that enthusiastic I liked them you know I thought they were good but I didn't sort of rave and everybody else raved about them and that sort of was sort of slightly unusual because you know they could understand that and is essentially because I'd heard him do some other things that had written more recently things that he enjoyed doing but hadn't recorded because he didn't think they were commercial and I suggested that he should continue writing in that vein rather than just trying to write top 20 hits it's a little bit funny this feeling inside that's how it will be played in a pub well I used to play in a pub so I know tell me Oh a better I just go dishonor was he called this room France yesterday well we rehearsed and we did six numbers and we didn't learn them off pretty well and today we came in and went over them again and then I don't know you go over them again tomorrow and you do it gradually we don't just keep going over them just I just saw you know when they're right make you friends let people know that the people know you gotta watch when I win a game you will see the light there oh you see baby alibi Oh
