oh my god when this was announced I was so excited I watched a Harris heler video about it and before the video was even finished it was ordered when Elgato comes out with something I'm pretty certain it's going to be a winner and I'm a huge fan of teleprompters they keep a video on point and make editing a video so much easier videos that I make without a teleprompter easily take five times as long to produce so I can't think of any reason to not use them yes when you first try it's awkward and you look like you're reading but it's a skill like any other so when Elgato said they were making an inexpensive teleprompter I knew it was going to be incredible now I may be a bit of an Elgato Fanboy I have two stream decks because they are awesome devices for automation the software they make to run them is garbage but if you use companion they become amazing I have two key lights and they are pretty much the only lights I use I do own more expensive lights from amaran AKA aperture but the way key lights work over Wi-Fi is just amazing and the system aperture relies on is so useless and limiting I refuse to buy any other lights from them I even own an Elgato green screen it's the highest quality screen you can get if you're okay with the smaller size of it oh and I have two of their mic stands because they're super high quality and unlike most other Alternatives they look great so what do all these things have in common well high quality is the biggest thing they're far cheaper than anything of even similar quality sometimes you have to spend an order of magnitude more to get something similar so I was excited about the teleprompter the problem with most teleprompters is that for any of them to be any good they typically have to be very expensive there are so many of these $100 to $200 bits of plastic that you put your phone or iPad in but they are so fiddly and because the phone's small you need the device closer to you and because you probably use the device for other things you have to get it in there every single time I have the parrot and I've had this thing for a while before returning it I have one from glar which is interesting but the one I always go back to is the first one I ever bought the pad prompter it was designed for the iPad the 9.7 in iPad and it was a snug fit for that and the iPad hasn't been 9.7 in in five or six years but really the only problem was the little plastic insert and it turns out without that insert the 10-in lilyput monitor works just fine in it it's not the best display but I can leave it in there attached to my Mac Mini as a secondary display this has a huge huge list of improvements over any mobile device display I don't have to fit it in every time I want to use it I don't have to transfer scripts over each time I don't have to use the fitly controls on the display I can't bump the device as I put it in which turns it off so I have to pull it out turn it on log in get to the right screen and put it back in hoping I don't bump the power button for the fifth time in a row it's all done from the computer so the Elgato has many of those same features but it's all from one company so it's a more seamless experience I hoped when I ordered it 3 weeks ago they said it would be delivered the week of Christmas but then the Box arrived while I was out of town spreading the word about AMA at coupon in mid- November a few days after I got back I started taking a look at it it's a pretty big box with lots of little boxes inside it comes with the teleprompter itself a few different ways to attach it a nice braided USBC to usba C cable and well that's about it it has a few different ways to use it you can attach their webcam right here or take that off and attach it to the front of your lens with all of these adapter rings the device itself is pretty light so the filter rings on your lens should be able to support it there's never a time you need to touch the teleprompter so you won't need to push on it breaking the filter ring that's great or you can mount the teleprompter on a tripod and mount your camera on this attachment they've really thought of most of the ways you're likely to use this though if you want to use your cell phone as a camera you need to get a tripod mount clip for of your own when you plug the device in and enable the driver it's a beautiful bright display really really nice very easy to read from some distance and the mirror is very close to the lens so you can work with a very wide angle lens which is also really nice to see you plug it into your computer so it shows up as an external monitor and now you can use any teleprompter software available for your compute platform I use a SAS service called speak flow which is amazing if you've ever used a teleprompter that's pretty much all you need to know so do I love it hell no I don't love it within an hour of opening the box I initiated a return it's going back because it's garbage in fact I'm holding on to this video Until the refund completes just in case let me tell you the ways I hate this thing first first look at this thing it's only as big as it needs to be but there is no way to collapse it in case you need to go somewhere so does that mean it's rigid and wellb built no way this is some super flimsy plastic it's been reinforced but it Flexes in a second I have no confidence that this will last more than a year or so with the typical bangs that equipment gets then look at the cable it's a nice braided cable but the devic is USBC and they give you a cable that needs USB a on the other side this may have been fine 5 years ago but that ship has sailed this is one of the only devices I own that uses usba to the computer and that cable provides data and power if it's plugged in all the time then it's on all the time there's no way to power on and off the device other than reaching around to the back of your computer to unplug it can you say burn in well then when you plug it in it won't work until you install the drivers I've had other USBC monitors that work fine without drivers but this one needs software from everything I know about Elgato they are a hardware company and they suck at software when there's a new release of the OS this will probably break oh and if you're on Linux it won't work Windows and Mac only this thing is so disappointing in so many ways but I would probably keep it anyway if it were fairly priced based on the quality and price of everything else the company makes it would would make sense to charge $100 to $150 for this but $300 is just insanely greedy so is there another option not really for our first device get the parrot or something similar and practice using it see if you like using it after a dozen videos if it's not for you after really working with it I guess you made a good decision but buying this and returning it has now Justified the cost of what should be a better choice based on reviews I've seen well below the cost of professional systems you can get the Ian teleprompters which tend to go for around 2,000 to $2,500 that is a lot of money but that's a 19-inch monitor so you can place it much further back limiting ime movement but I can still see it it uses an HDMI input so no drivers need it and it's powered separately and doesn't require hitting a power button allowing for better Automation and it's built really well along allwing for transport overall it's built so much better and seems the way to go to replace the pad prompter for another 15 years and there are enough folks on here who have no problem spending five grand on a camera when $1,000 will get them more than enough camera for everything they're going to be doing so maybe it's not so crazy and the Savings in time when using a teleprompter and how much I value my own time means that this gets paid for even with my li lied output in a year or so so that's what I think I'm sure some of you will comment below that I am crazy but that's okay but I hope you enjoyed the video anyway thanks so much for watching goodbye Stella is away at uh at a birthday party so you're not going to hear her saying dad let me in
