this ability to look at things or listen to things or other with other senses smell taste touch as the awareness rather than the interpreting mind practice that in your daily life it's a primordial spiritual practice if that's your only spiritual practice it would be quite enough so innocent perception it requires awareness it requires an alertness in the background of your perception without the alertness thinking will always overpower you the alertness keeps thinking at bay you remember the story i uh wrote about in the new earth it's an ancient zen story where the disciple and the zen master are walking on a long journey through the mountains and then they stop for a little picnic and then the disciple who is still having problems understanding what zen is all about he's only been there for 10 years he asks the master i don't quite get it yet how do i enter zen meaning how do i enter the state of consciousness that is then how do i and the master looks at him and says can you hear the sound of that mountain stream and the discoveries no i can't hear it the master has just see if you can listen see if you can hear it and that this is the point of of the master to the disciple to to become more alert he the master associates the alertness with the auditory perception there so the alertness flows into the auditory perception and as the master tells him you have to listen more carefully to hear that mountain stream and then the disciple at that moment the alertness the awareness in the disciple rises and he goes and of course at that very moment while he's in that intense listening he's no longer thinking or trying to figure out what zen is all about he's just and then he can hear in the far distance is a tiny mountain stream that makes a sound and suddenly he can hear it and he says yes i can hit and the masters that's it enter zen from there oh this is a practical to show by means of practical example what that means that alertness jesus talks about it too he's not if beast be so awake as if you were let's he gives the parable of a servant waiting for the master he doesn't know when the master come he may come in very silently so he you have to be alert don't go to sleep be alert and wait for the master so the servant is sitting in that house the door maybe i'm in my version of the story the sound is on the upper floor and the master is going could come in any moment and he's fairly the master is very quiet so you go so the sound basically would be in continuous presence otherwise he might miss the master again it's an example to show what that state of consciousness is again using the analogy with associating awareness with the auditory perception you can associate it with other perceptions too or with all perception or with no perception and there's no stress or strain in that alertness there isn't a willfulness behind it that's not it you can't hold your breath and make yourself be more alert i still can't hear the mountain stream you have to it's a it's a relaxed alertness that is one if you i'll sometimes use the expression vibrational frequency and there is a truth behind it whether or not it's scientific i don't care by the way i can sense when because i also experience fluctuations there's always a certain alertness in the background but sometimes there's an increase in alertness and sometimes it's just it recedes it's in the background the awareness and then the awareness the light gets a little like a dimmer switch it goes and then it goes it's still there according to the situation now the the so-called enlightened state which is a destiny of each human to reach although many won't read it in this lifetime but that's okay that would mean there's a continuous background awareness indian continues and you many of you already have it sporadically and there may be some of you who already have it continuously in the background the only reason why you're here because it's enjoyable but there's no point in asking or when is it going to be continuous for me irrelevant question the only true question is is it there now that's the only place where it can be now if it's not whether it's going to be there 10 minutes from now who knows is it going to be there next week when i get home who knows but when you get home it's now so the only relevant question is am i aware now and if you even remember to ask that question which is a powerful pointer to awareness very easily you can step from the question which is still a thought i call it a pointer certain thoughts are pointers that point beyond thought so that says ms am i aware now there's a powerful pointer and after that you yes that can immediately bring to it bring you to that heightened alertness am i i'm aware now let me just check and that checking creates a rise in the vibrational frequency you can can feel that and you can observe you can learn to observe in people it's not judgmental it's a simple fact you can look at a person and to some extent you can see what degree of awareness is there there are many humans who might never have heard of any spiritual teaching who have some awareness in their life they don't know what it is but it's there i can very often i'm i'm i don't like to be stopped and recognized in the street all the time but it does happen a lot and when it happens it's lovely so it's a paradox i try to wear sometimes sunglasses into a baseball cap a funny incident i was in a supermarket er and i was wearing dark sunglasses and a baseball cap and just looking at the shelves and the man came up to me and said hi i got may i shake your hands do people recognize you a lot [Laughter] now i am saying this is quite not infrequently i know a few seconds i look at a person a few seconds before they recognize me i recognize them i've never seen them before but i recognize them i know there is a there is that there's a fairly strong presence there and then i know oh this person is going and this is not a thought it's just a realization this person is going to recognize me and most of the time i'm right my question is about my kids i'm grateful that when i read um new earth that it resonated with me i've been looking for a spiritual path and it just it made sense to me it resonated with me and it took i read the power of now years ago and i kind of read it and got it up here and put it on a shelf and kind of moved on but this time it seems to have yes taken a little bit more yes so i'm working at it and i have four-year-old twins and an eight-year-old so my question is how to teach them to expose them to this because you know my wife and i have different views she considers herself to be catholic and i don't have an association with a standard religion so to speak uh this seems to resonate with me so i'm just trying to get a sense for how to interact with them and to share this with them yes so the twins are how old four four and the older one is eight eight and that's a boy uh the oldest is a boy and a twins or boy girl oh yeah yeah well the most important thing is and many even good parents don't know that first of all the the energy field at home the energy that you and your wife generate at home which is a reflection of both your states of consciousness it is one of the most important factors so what is the general energy field that on a daily basis you and your wife manifest generate in this home environment i do know that nowadays many home environments have a very nervous energy field because everybody is so busy getting things done the parents are busy getting things done the children are encouraged to continuously do this and do that and sometimes encouraged to stop doing this or stop doing that and then they have this additional layer of electronic devices the pads eye pads and whatever other devices samsung and so on the parents use them the phones children begin to use them but mainly the the constant field almost stressful environment to to visit some of these families there's always some the next thing to do that seems to the underlying in the underlying energy you'd see what's the next thing that we need to do and have you done that yet come on let's have you brushed your teeth no okay then do it many good meaning well-meaning parents interact with their children predominantly 90 or more even 100 on the level of doing either do this or stop doing that yeah i'm pretty good at being a human doing that's good at being a human being yes yeah and so the being of the child is never fully acknowledged in order to acknowledge the being of the child you have to spend moments when you you give the child to your fullest attention not not your fullest attention because because you're talking about something that needs to be done but your fullest attention to for example by just listening to the child when he has something to say to you or tell a story or giving your fullest attention occasionally by just observing them or him or her observing as they go about their life in the house it just needs to be a few minutes where your attention rests upon them even if they are sometimes not directly interacting with you because by by observing them at play for example without telling them to do this or that or don't do this or that but simply allow your attention to rest on them and watch them if possible in that state of relatively as much as possible thoughtless awareness where you're just the aware presence for the children and then occasionally when you come in when you they come close to you to look into their eyes doesn't have to be long they don't even have to you don't don't say i would let you acquaint each other's eyes it doesn't work you look into their eyes when they when you talk to them when they talk to you and in that moment of looking you connect with their being so that part of your interaction with the child is not based on doing but on a flow of being towards the child so that you connect on the level of being that means you acknowledge the deeper reality of their child you truly acknowledge their being i would suggest that in modern families in most modern families children very often get rid in states of anxiety or great restlessness later becoming in teenage years becoming states of antagonism and anger and i would suggest that often the child doesn't know why there is this anger and restlessness it often goes back to the parents inability or they they've they've done everything for the child on the level of the on the doing level but the children feel unseen by the parent they feel unseen in their being they are not acknowledged in their being and if they are unseen that vital dimension of their being feels starved it is not encouraged by the child and and the deepest connection with the child is missing the parent doesn't know that they think i'm really a good i'm doing all i can make it makes sense because with the four-year-olds in particular i get what you're saying again with all of them but in particular with them they're not getting that i can see they're they're angry about not getting the attention that they want they throw really big tantrums yes and my my uh four-year-old son actually gets physically angry yes so yes yes yes now you don't give them the attention when they demand it through throwing a tantrum that's not the moment to give them although when the tantrum does happen it's good if you can be spacious and allow it to be while it happens instead of reacting so that they don't pull you into a similar state of consciousness when you get angry because they're in a tantrum so if you can then take that as a signal to be really alert and present and observe and so the that is not the moment though to connect because the child at that moment isn't this the pain body is there covering up the essence of their being so the moment they demand attention is not the best moment to give them attention because the demand for attention can also be an egoic thing so it's not necessarily that they want the ego doesn't want attention on the deepest level it doesn't know what the deepest level is the ego wants a different kind of attention it wants to it wants you to get to strengthen the ego in the child and so it's often is also a desire of the ego to control the environment because there's no other ways so very young children cry very loud because it's an attempt of the developing ego to exert some control over the environment and that's good not to give them what they need what they demand there but give them attention in other moments and the real attention is let your awareness rest upon them look at them see them they want to be seen that's their being acknowledge their being so that that don't again i have to repeat it because it's so important don't always interact only through doing or don't do this don't do that which tends to be the case with families and with your wife the same make sure that there is some spaciousness in your relationship no busy how the no matter how busy the household is make sure there is some spaciousness in the relationship between you so that there's some spaciousness emanating from both of you some peace even though you may be busy but there's some peace emanation into the energy field in your home that comes from you and that's children respond very much to the energy field that they grow up in that affects them very deeply so this and the interaction between you and your wife is what generates that energy field and then give them attention doesn't have to be long periods of time but often at night before bedtime and during the day watch them listen to them occasionally fully and don't interfere with some kind of advice necessarily just listen just look acknowledge their beautiful being which is there and that's the greatest thing you can do for the child is it really possible somehow to be present and work fast and nevertheless be conscious at the same time interesting yes it seems at first that when you are in presence it uh almost seems to people that they are forced to do things slowly and sometimes i'm described as slow by some people close to me and it's true but sometimes i can be fast too there are occasions there are occasions when i'm quite when the it is demanded i can be fast it's presence does not have to be slow remember the famous zen saying hurry slowly hurry slowly translate it into spanish that lentim enter i think that's a transcript translation so what does that mean how can you go fast and yet be present at the same time it has a lot to do with the focus of your attention so you're working here if a large part of your attention is where you want to get to the result you want to achieve then you are working here if you said i one can't really put it in numbers or percentages but i'll do it anyway so if eighty percent of your attention is where you need to be i need to get this finished and in the meantime this it creates a tension in you there's a mental projection where you need to go and in the meantime you're doing this in order to get there if you can be more present and have eighty percent of your attention reverse it have eighty percent of the attention in the doing itself and twenty percent of where you want to get to because you have to get somewhere then you can work fast and working fast with presence implies enjoyment of the activity and not being present usually implies lack of enjoyment of the activity and the rising of stress or to be working with distaste or some kind of resistance and that's not good for anybody it's not good for you for your physical body the people around you so you can practice with practical just practice with practical things or even pretend that you're in a hurry as if you want to have a just a trial practice pretend that you're in a hurry and you need to get these things or maybe you don't even need to pretend because it happens often enough in real life that you're in a hurry you need to get ready in order to leave the house or go out and is it possible to do what you have to do within that space of a few minutes or whatever time you need to get ready and do it actually being fully conscious of every movement and enjoy the energy behind it which is really getting in touch with your conscious attention enjoy the energy that's behind the doing rather than mentally projecting to the future do it and that's hurry slowly is the meaning is that is what that means running the same i if you have to run to catch a plane or a train or a bus or whatever you can run and be totally centered and yet run fast so that it's a different kind of running it's a smooth more smooth less stressful running you will actually enjoy every step of it because you are not excessively focused on the next moment and of course realizing as the zen master says zen is doing one thing at a time this is another way of pointing to this way of acting and working zen is doing one thing at a time which means giving your fullest attention to whatever you're doing at this moment then you know peripherally of course why you're doing it where you want to go to but in the meantime and then you're running and it's not as stressful running anymore you actually and if you miss the plane what does it matter it's just you're standing somewhere else and you're sitting somewhere else not not on the plane and you're breathing somewhere i need to be on that plane maybe not so that's a it's a practice of hurrying slowly there's also a tendency in our civilization to create more deadlines than actually necessary for good functioning of things i find there are often people create for themselves organizations and so on create unnecessarily tight deadlines that often do not allow things to mature so that's uh this has to be done by tomorrow night that's right why [Laughter] and then often they don't even publishers do that sometimes they bring out books some books have a slow time to they gradually acquire their readers by word of mouth and so on and some published many publishers say if not enough books i saw in the last six months it's never printed again that's not even given a chance there are some tv series that may actually be quite good and they have one run and say not quite enough viewers but it was so good because you can just allow things to mature a little bit why could the constant deadlines but you may be trapped in an organization that does that which more likely than not because of this world functions so it's ultimately you may have to create your own organization or if the organization is flexible enough you may be able to create a different environment i'm famous for not meeting deadlines and the world hasn't collapsed for some reason but if i had were an employee i would have lost my job many times or probably would have walked out unless the i could have introduced a different way of doing things if there's room for that that's good einstein said i want to know the mind of god the rest is details somebody asked what that means here and of course the mind of god is consciousness consciousness is the the light that emanates from this consciousness is not god in the same way that the light of the sun is not the sun and yet on the other hand the light of the sun is one with the sun but you couldn't quite say this this light this this is the sun in the same way your consciousness which is not yours the essence of we are the light of the world is an emanation from the source of all life it and so i use the analogy of the sun and there's a good reason why in many ancient civilizations the sun was regarded as god because it's a continuous outpouring of life energy and so in the sense perceived universe the closest analogy one can find is you can point to the sun and say that is like continuous emotion all life derives from it and the life the consciousness in things is that so god realization is the realization of i am that i am your your i am identity and that's god speaking but it would also be you speaking so it doesn't it doesn't transform the ray of the sun into the sun but it makes the ray of the sunlight aware of its origin and its home and what it is still connected with and always remains connected with at some point we need to transcend the naive beliefs in what god is as a controlling figure that's that that has that created the world a long time ago and then he walked away and lost interest or maybe he's still interested but somehow things are not going well or he's condemning people for being dysfunctional and then of course there are many arguments you could raise against this that kind of view of god and that's the traditional argument of people who don't believe in god believe in god who say if they were a god who controls everything and supposedly loves people or maybe not doesn't love but he's controlling things then if there isn't god how would he allow all that suffering and evil to happen in this world therefore they say there is no god or they say therefore god is morally inferior to us because we could create we can see the injustices and the terrible things that happen in this world and we are touched by it but god isn't there for god is some inferior creature that created the world out of malevolent intent that was actually believed held by many of the gnostics ancient christian and pre-christian group of people who otherwise had also some interesting teachings but they believed that the entire physical universe was the creation of a malevolent deity an inferior deity i can see why in some way but it's not the case so there isn't a controlling figure there that this so we need to go beyond that image that anthropomorphic image of a paternal authority figure and realize that god is the life in all beings god manifests as the life in all beings god is the consciousness in you is the emanation of god god lives through you everything that happens human god is suffering in humans in a way you could say that's what the christian teaching means so it is a gradual emergence of consciousness and the suffering is more like a dreamlike thing to god it's like a a bad a bad dream as in the process of emergence of of that god consciousness into this dimension so human beings are not autonomous entities it's not you your consciousness his consciousness her consciousness every human is a temporary expression of the one consciousness before it kills you it does things to you do you notice those things that it does to you when you look in the mirror in the morning and especially if you compare it to a photo taken 20 30 40 years ago you notice the effect of time on you you may not need to get ugly because the less you identified with your external self and as you grow old the is there for you to identify more and more with the presence and the presence shines through the fading form and when the present shines through the fading form it's actually very very beautiful it's different from the kind of beauty that's there when you're 20 years old and it's like the the apple that just been just fallen from the tree and it's still not totally fresh and you have that biological mighty maybe beauty and this so that's nice too but it doesn't last there's a deeper beauty that can shine through and it happens to those humans who are connected with the the presence that they are and then you don't turn ugly in the absence of that if you only identified with your physical form then i must admit it could happen that you turn ugly irrelevant is another word the questioner uses in our civilization old age is not valued so people who grow old have the feeling that they are irrelevant or they are regarded as irrelevant old age is not associated with wisdom in our civilization because our civilization doesn't even know what wisdom is it's not highly valued cleverness yes high iq yes and whatever else but not wisdom how do you measure it how what is that but that is going to change we already in traditional cultures ancient older cultures the elders are the most important people and in the western societies the elders are are the well to be charitable they're called the elderly and they are somewhere in a home and you visit them once or twice a month and then they sit in their chairs watching tv not realizing the opportunity of old age because nobody has told them so you can you can appreciate your appearance if it happens to be good and you're still relatively young and your body looks good or your face looks good you can appreciate that in the same way you appreciate other things lovely things there's nothing wrong with that but it would be important when you look in the mirror [Music] to also feel your presence so that you don't get excessively attached to this external form you can appreciate it but it does not need to be attached to it but you can only not be attached to it if you can sense the underlying presence so when you look in the mirror maybe you even apply makeup they apply makeup to my face because i come on because it looks too oily otherwise apparently and i look i noticed last night it actually does because last night i didn't do makeup i saw myself on the little screen and said i'm very shiny and it wasn't the inner emanation of presence it was coming from it was a different kind of shininess so before i go on camera they apply makeup to the face is that does it mean i'm vain because i don't want to be shiny maybe so you may apply makeup especially if you are a woman men i don't know some men might do it too i don't know and there's no reason to think oh should i really or shouldn't i or there's something wrong with me if i do it that must be ego which i apply makeup don't complicate life too much [Music] if you want to apply makeup apply makeup but while you apply makeup feel the underlying presence and while you look in the mirror sense the presence of yourself the presence of presence the stillness and then it's not a problem when suddenly you look in the mirror again and you realize that 25 years have passed and you see oh the apple doesn't look the same anymore wrinkly time is a strange thing i described it just now as almost it's one way of looking at it it's something that is ultimately going to destroy you and it does let you everything but you never catch time you only catch the evidence it leaves it's a criminal the get criminal commits all kinds of terrible crimes murderous sprees and you can never find the criminal because all you can ever find is the evidence left behind by the criminal which is dead bodies but they all appear in the present moment there's only ever the present moment nobody can experience time as such so time exists and doesn't exist it exists on the surface of things but does not exist in the depths of yourself
