ah such a lovely snowball we're in the Puerto Rican neighborhood and we're gonna have some Puerto Rican lunch today Plata and some Havana and how about you baby I just hope the food is good that's not filled by Puerto Rico in case you didn't notice the two gigantic puerto rican flags along Division Street Humboldt Park is like finding a little piece of the island in the city of Chicago this community was built in great part by generations of boricua families who started to arrive in the 60s and 70s looking for opportunities that couldn't find back home they are business owners educators and leaders coming here will remind you that there's plenty to love about the culture and traditions they brought from back home but if there's one thing that Puerto Ricans in Chicago know how to do its cook so in this video we're gonna take you around different restaurants and tell you what to order why not start by having breakfast at Nellie's or more like brunch since we can manage to wake up early and there's so many options but the first thing you should try here is the coconut oatmeal individual loads earning like that so looks kind of like porridge very porridge like and this was like a coconut yeah just like the one my grandmother bakes so when you go to a fund out of the important aviso they have many sandwiches but the more famous one is la vita physically a sandwich with three meats typically they let me open it steak ham and a lot of times you'll get turkey and it's on uh-oh the type of brain for you today oh yeah I'm gonna go your quarter to get bread here take a look I put in the special sauce which turns out to be dispatching that waiting here you know yes and there you go it has all the components we'll ever see me that's a nice cheesy bite it's all about planting now moving on to Logan Square the next-door neighbor hood where the Puerto Rican community has expanded to we were recommended to try poncing and we couldn't be happier [Music] oh yeah so one of the more typical appetizers that you can get in the Iowa it's 48 seconds lost officers and this one's actually spicy which is not it's not very common but you can take this and then dump me freaked out but it's really really good expeditions like I'm a little bit more wimpy when it comes to spicy things so let's see how spicy it is for me I used my hit meter like if my head single then I start swaying then it's too spicy it's just my tongue and it's just the right amount of spice yes Puerto Rican food is not normally spicy but you can always find a little spicy sauce in some of the restaurants you know in case you want to add a little kick alright so our plates have arrived and Maria's gonna give you a little tour of her plate and so let us know what you got so I got those just not that come something so let's see [Music] how does it compare to yet my dad so I know that you like my grandma's pins a lot so how do these compare my grandma I shouldn't answer that pretty good because ham flavor but your grams are still very very good good save on that one how does it compare to your Fairless yeah I'm also gonna I got something called a foam ball with basically translates to fried feet but in this case is foam dough made of plantains and garlic a little green salad basically a tomato and this right here is a little bit of sauce so you can dip your mofongo this live it to dry and then we got the fried pork just got very crispy you know it's good when you can instantly taste the garlic in it for dessert we couldn't resist to get this jiggly goodness it's called ten blade and it's a coconut custard it's delicious [Music] [Music] next we're going to jibarito simha's also in Logan Square and it's a very popular restaurant these days they have lots of traditional dishes but they are mostly known for their high burritos and their Street basically Cottage critter basically flour spices herbs and piece of cottage let's see it normally do you can where you going on the island you'll see him really really big like really quest in and big or you'll see the more smaller side here we have it's like sprite ball and then you know it's actually fade away no that's called a general a Papa does basically borrowed like mashed potato and then it's built with normally it's ground beef [Music] take a [Music] take me back to when I was okay that was worthy music these are kind of inexpensive about a dollar and let's not forget that I've got Borya a plantain and root vegetable fritters stuff with lots of me and lastly the most controversial one of them off you're probably asking why it well these are custody they're called passive eNOS here and depending on where you're on the island is either passive India or in a funnel yoke and there's a war the war above it doesn't matter they're just delicious no you go to Puerto Rico and it's like half full of me and here is just yeah just tell me speaking of controversies this is a Haritha pretty much a sandwich that uses fright estonians instead of breath and while its origin is quite controversial aji burrito in Chicago is as iconic as their famous hot dog all right so I just got my key buddy so it's basically a plantain sandwich that's what he buddy does there call this one is filled little bit Shawn I wasn't expecting the rice so this is kind of a massive plate this is garlic so it's like it has like a garlic sauce on it so when they're not as full you can eat them like these are [Music] two more stops to go this first go to Lumumba a low-end square they also have great street food and a couple of other traditional items that we wanted to show you all right so we're here at la bomba restaurant and Logan Square and we're going to be trying out some Korean Street food and favorites starting with teach a table for you we also have be eachother boyo different versions you can kabob also another this is the pork kabob these are pretty quiet yes I'm going to be trying to teach our own the point I get it see ya as the crispy skin you know is Britpop basically like fried chicken that's what they call it to Tehran's I know Maria ordered a totally different totally different things than I did so what's this but they like their version of tamale stuff chicken and there's a version of this that's made out of the you complain right I think pork these are almost as good on this problem so what kind of soup is is and ongoing basically a tripe soup and you should have been weirded out by it this is delicious actually I just tried it and it tastes like kind of like pumpkin yeah maybe they mix up over a vegetable at that point add that flavor Jack is out I'm working it out by tribal Tommy [Music] I think is Paquita too my skin so I don't know so what do you have over there to have some precious sauce tomato ketchup or otherwise known as fancy sauce [Music] [Music] finally this tour will not be complete without visiting a bakery a panel area for breakfast for after every meal we need to have our coffee and a sweet pastry cafe Cola in Humboldt Park is perfect for that how's that coffee we're at capicola tonight Nicola Nicola check yeah we Puerto Ricans like our coffee with milk yes love to sugar although I didn't push over my yeah none of that foam stuff right which one do you want crackers SC though yeah at cream cheese filling my fingers all sticky let's see which one you're gonna get is it the sweet one or the salty sweet but it's actually not too sweet I just prefer it that way okay Maria is always looking her fingers I'm always looking my favorite I'm sorry and then here we have pasta together why Java this is a turnover and he's filled with wobba paste Wow I've always found these uh these hard to eat these are hard to me because of all the collar shirt yeah my father if you were over my face and this one was like the cream cheese blah blah it looks like it's on a biscuit what is it tari yeah definitely a chart though I thought I was gonna be crispier like kind of like we the fussing the other way up it oh hi guavas oh it's creamy its creamy because I've seen some flan be like like jello eat I don't really like that texture perfectly done munechika hi Hanson yo I'm gonna see a girl on the plane they said not on your side man I'm dad whatever you guys are craving wait why am i switching to English we're supposed to do the ending in Spanish yeah I guess it's just easier in English but that's how we do it in Chicago that's right from this video we hope you get some ideas on what to e where to go and if you have any questions about anything just leave it in the comment below yeah so what was your favorite my favorite ways I think it was a the mofongo that we had and once a restaurant I like yeah don't say it yeah I also like concept that it's two goats oh good yeah yeah I hadn't had to go before but then that we just had yeah the fine that we just had was really good like really creamy and to be honest we haven't even you know scratch the surface in terms of Puerto Rican food we got here what seven years ago yeah overall maybe we have gone for like ten restaurants so we have a lot to explore yeah but you know since we cook Porter we can food at home it's hard to go out and eat that kind of food is gonna make exactly all right guys well I hope you guys enjoyed this tour of Puerto Rican food here in Chicago and let us know what places you guys like to go in Chicago orient your city thank you so much for watching and see you in the next one bye [Music]
