when you think of Japanese drinking alley known as yokocho you might Envision retro narrow Alleyways crammed with tiny izakayas but have you ever heard of a high-end indoor yokocho well today I'm going to be checking one out at the shinigawa Prince Hotel where they have sky high views in their indoor yokocho it's a wonderful place where you can enjoy Japanese foods that are not only street foods like Yakitori that are normally available at yokocho but also classic high-end Japanese foods like sushi tempura and Tepanyaki but before we go make sure to subscribe for more awesome Japan content and you can book these restaurants on by food through the links in the description [Music] thank you what a beautiful indoor yokocho I'm now on the 38th floor of the Prince Hotel and this floor is called the goju sansuki it refers to the 53 stations on the tokaido road which was a road that connected Kyoto to Edo or modern day Tokyo many many years ago and people used to walk that route it's a very long distance but along that road there were 53 stations or rest areas where people could rest they could get food have lodging and other services along the way to make the trip a little bit more bearable and each of the restaurants that are on this floor are actually named after real stations on the tokaido road so today I'm going to be replicating in a very easy manner the walk along the tokaido road from Kyoto to Tokyo and my first stop of course will be Kyoto this restaurant is called sanjo which is a famous District in Kyoto City and this particular restaurant is famous for its wonderful Teppanyaki and its amazing views so as we're in a Teppanyaki Restaurant of course you can get Japanese Wagyu beef so there's the gion course there's the sun Joe course which is another District in Kyoto and the kifunek course which is actually named after a famous Shrine in Kyoto and I think that's the one I want to get it's just the right amount for me it's got appetizers Japanese black beef sirloin it's got everything in it I think this is the one oh so they recommended a champagne to go with my chorus today and I couldn't say no to that so let's take a sip cheers wow so actually this might be the first time I've had a pre-course appetizer to go with just my alcohol so this is very exciting this is atsukudani it's basically just meat Seafood vegetables have been simmered in medium soy sauce of course you can put various twists on it really tender the seasoning is amazing it's very sweet very characteristic with tsukudani and a wonderful appetizer to go with the champagne foreign this really does look like the perfect summer appetizer and look at the beautiful beef jelly on the bottom it's a really beautiful dish [Music] thank you oh my gosh instant burst of flavor the corn potage on the top is so creamy and naturally sweet mixed with the Umami of the beef Joule and it Blends together it turns into kind of a corn soup but in a different format let's try the seafood salad that's also really tasty it's a really nice bouncy shrimp with cuts of abalone it's like a burst of umami from the sea next let's try the pancake with the caviar the sour cream is almost like a cream cheese and maybe the caviar adds to that Umami flavor and the pancake isn't like a classic pancake it was really firm and moist and I'm really really pleasantly surprised by that I would eat 10 more of those oh [Music] yes I am so excited this looks tantalizing let's try it first with no sauces or seasonings only the salt and pepper that he's added on it so we can enjoy the taste of the Hitachi you itadakimasu oh my goodness mmm that is so juicy this Hitachi it's firm but incredibly juicy I think there's just a really nice mixture of fat in it so it's so juicy so flavorful and it's really nicely salted it just brings out all of that wonderful flavor of the meat let's try it with some different seasonings I want to try this red wine salt wow that is really good it's just a completely different flavor profile of salt this does add an extra layer of flavor let's try this eggplant it's a water eggplant I'm really surprised by the texture because this is the most firm and most juicy and not oily eggplant I've ever had alright so next I'm going to try some beef with Wasabi on top this is definitely the way that people in Japan enjoy their wagyu beef [Music] fantastic I am certain this is a real Wasabi because the Wasabi is not super spicy it doesn't go to your nose it's really delicate it's creamy it goes so well with the steak [Music] this was a fantastic course I got everything I wanted out of a technology course and a wonderful seasonal dessert this time it includes Hokkaido melon but I still have to continue on my tokaido journey so I'm going to go to the next stop on the tokaido pilgrimage let's go there now Oh What A Long Walk oh I wish I wasn't doing the tokaido pilgrimage and heels yeah that was a bad call it's a long walk to the next restaurant oh all right I've made it to my second destination on the tokaido road this is odawara the name of the restaurant is odawara and it's also a real City on the tokaido route and it's not too far from Tokyo actually so you can actually take a train there very easily so that means I'm getting close to my final destination in Tokyo [Music] um is [Music] wow what a cool room it feels so private so today I'm going to be getting the Akebono course which usually includes five seafood tempuras and four fresh vegetable tempuras so let's give it a try can't wait this tempura looks so delicious the batter looks really fluffy here we go oh my word it's actually a very unique tempura I think the shrimp is so plump every bite you take it kind of almost Pops in your mouth and the batter is not so crunchy it's kind of fluffy and delicate in a lot of tempura restaurants that are kind of high-end and uh even um you will often see the legs also fried on its own and it's very crispy let's give it a taste thank you I'm really surprised it's very crunchy but all the it all kind of like flakes apart really quickly it's almost like eating some chips but also it's Smoky and I wasn't expecting that very good [Music] foreign with some freshly squeezed lemon wow that's a new experience for me I just didn't know timbukta could taste like this before the hutate is so tender and since it's sushi grade high quality scallop it's just so smooth but meaty you really could eat it on its own and you know it would be delicious and the lemon is a nice compliment it makes it taste like you're almost not eating Tempura with the lemon asparagus actually oh my gosh that's a really good asparagus not only is it crisp it's somehow simultaneously tender and it's sweet it's got natural Sweetness in it this is the first time I've ever seen a Tempura with a button mushroom and apparently it is just full of mushroom juices hmm it just it's almost like it's filled with natural mushroom soup inside I'm just amazed by how juicy it is wow this looks so good I love tendon which is a tempura donburi or tempura on Rice I was noticing his technique when he was making the kakiyage he kept flipping it and rolling it while it was in the oil let's see how all the flavors blend together as I expected the shrimp on the inside is still really fluffy since it's so round the inside is just it's not overly cooked so it really is masterful in the way that he's shaped it this meal is fantastic and there's also a dessert so I'm going to finish off with a little bit of dessert and then I'm gonna be on my way to my last stop which is Tokyo foreign this is my last stop on my tokaido pilgrimage this restaurant is called nihonbashi and it's named after a real area of Tokyo called Nihon Bashi and that's been around for a very very long time and this would actually be my real final stop along the tokaido road pilgrimage let's go give it a try and enjoy some delicious sushi this restaurant is gorgeous and the views are probably the best that I've seen so far you can actually see Tokyo Tower outside the window and I get to sit right in front of my sushi chef for today foreign [Music] which is a type of Rich seaweed that they often use to flavor soups because it's got so much umami foreign the little tiny eggs are really firm and they're all kind of popping in your mouth but it all Blends together and it's almost like you're eating a miso soup oh this seaweed let's give it a try that's tasty the seaweed is almost like eating noodles in a inside of vinegar the sauce is is basically vinegar foreign wow that is really good it has just the right amount of Wasabi on it and this is the fresh grated Wasabi and the whitening fish is a little bit usually it's a little bit on the tougher side so you get a little bit of almost a like a strong bite like a crunch in some parts but it's also tender in other parts very delicious foreign very very good it is so silky and creamy it's got just the right amount of fat mixed in but he also adds in a fresh recipe to balance out the fattiness and it just Blends together in Perfect Harmony my video [Music] all right let's try the shrimp if you like shrimp this is the one for you it is so meaty a um foreign before and as the chef mentioned each restaurant does it in a different way this particular restaurant they marinated in salt first and then they marinate it in vinegar and it really has this wonderful salty and also acidic flavor profile to it and then you top that off with a little bit of soy sauce it brings it together with some Umami it is delicious and the meat is very tender foreign I'm excited to see how this particular uni tastes let's give it a try um mmm oh wow that is really creamy it goes down almost like butter it's very tasty I can see how this is the top quality uni it's delicious so this particular kind of grape is called a kyoho which is a giant Japanese grape and they recommend to peel it and I'm impressed by how much the inside of the grape looks like a lychee let's give it a taste flavor explosion that is so juicy if I describe it it tastes like the classic grape flavor of drinks it's that rich but it tastes more like fancy than like a grape drink if you know what I mean but you really get this Rich grape flavor and it's so juicy every dish here was amazing each Sushi impeccable but what a wonderful way to end an incredible short Journey on the tokaido this was delicious well I am finished my pilgrimage from Kyoto to Tokyo I feel like I had a supremely easy taste of what it would be like to walk from Kyoto to Tokyo and it was very delicious let me tell you that and I can understand why they would call it the ajikaido because honestly it was the road of delicious flavors I hope you guys enjoyed this video if you did please make sure to give us a like don't forget to subscribe and we'll see you guys very soon in another video bye guys thank you
