hey guys Madeleine Harvey here and thank you so much for joining me today in our video today we're gonna talk about how you can develop really awesome breath support easy easy it's really easy it's really awesome stay tuned it's my hope that by the end of today's video you're gonna really discover a new way to develop amazing breath support that means more power that means more range that means more projection and presence the list goes on and on because we all know that great breathing is the foundation of really great singing so before we get started I just want to say that when you're learning to sing on YouTube super crucial to develop a way of discernment of taking the information and kind of digesting it playing with it and deciding what works best for you so I encourage you to take what you know about breathing and put it over here just for now I am simply offering you a unique possibly new point of view that maybe will work a little bit better for you okay so I just want to say that it's very important to take what resonates with you and leave the rest for now because at the end of the day that's all that matters what works best for you we're all different okay so let's go ahead and get started what is the easy way to tap into really great breath support well I'm glad you asked breathing process happens in two parts the inhale the exhale we all know that the magic happens on the exhale however it is the inhale that is the most crucial part of the breathing process it's so important so even though there's no singing that's really happening here it will determine exactly how the sound sounds when it comes out for example if I breathe in like this how do you think it's going to sound as I exhale not very good and that's you know that's usually what happens with a lot of singers and breathing is one of those things that there's a lot of different ways to do it that's kind of floating out there and it can sometimes be really really confusing for the singer I know it was the hardest thing for me to learn when I was singing SuperDuper hard really hard so again I'm offering a different perhaps unique point of view that will just tap into your most natural way of breathing so again let's go ahead and get started we know inhale exhale we're going to talk about the inhale today but let's break the inhale down even further to parts and I for this I need my visual aid mm-hmm tada I don't really know what this is called I stole it for my husband he uses it to clean off his lenses but to me it looks like a turkey baster or like if you're a mom of the 80s and 90s and maybe today they use this to pull book me on boogers out of baby's noses mmm really crazy and graphic a little they're so sorry about that but however it visually demonstrates the breathing process let me tell you something about your breathing process it's reflexive what does that mean it means it's natural and you don't have to control it to do it thank goodness but when we go to sing there's some self-awareness that comes into the mix and that's where the problem is so for today we're going to learn how to get out of the way that's the secret get out of the way and again to demonstrate this I'm going to use my visual aid let's pretend it's a turkey baster we have an opening here and we have this magical bubble looking balloon thingy majiggy at the bottom this creates a vacuum in the exact way that your body does so if I am fold down here I simply engage my balloon at the bottom here to get the breath out and how pray tell do I get it back in what do I do ah do I tap here do I pull here to try to get some air in that way no silly I just let go ah your body is no different so we're going to break the inhale down into two parts right here and right here let's start right here because that's usually the part that becomes really crazy for a lot of people we've heard we've heard people coaches of the days of yore tell us that we need to breathe in our diaphragm now that's the source of contention for a lot of singers because all they know is that they they may have to push their belly out or that something should happen down here well again our objective today is just to get out of the way but we're going to start right here so in your mind's eye if you can concentrate on the back of your throat right where your tongue and your jaw and your throat all meet and just watch just watch your breath fall in fly out it's really a quiet thing isn't it goodgoodgood we need to create the sense of openness because if I'm doing a lot of action down here there's a lot of you know action going on down here but this is blocked it doesn't matter it's very difficult to get the air in now you get the point but this is where we're going to work first we're going to really open it so we're going to go like fish like a little bit like a fish right where your tongue your jaw and your throat kind of all intersect right there let's take five inhales together and if you notice there's not a lot of sound going on because I'm not using the muscles of my chest of my back or of my throat so five open throat inhales together here we go exhale and breathe in normal goodgoodgood I hope you were able to feel that if you just kind of observed your body's natural vacuum effect you were able to see that if you exhaled normally right it created we won't say tension that's not the right word but mmm small space yes and then when we were ready for it we just open and now we have belly button I've worn a shear somewhat of a sheer top to really illustrate the the effect our objective again today guys is to get out of the way just observing without controlling that's the big thing observe without control just watch watch how your Naturals your natural breathing process happens so now that we've adjusted here we've said open really open it up aha this is where it kind of goes wrong for a lot of singers then again know that magic happens down here but if the jaw and the throat is not opening like to really allow that a vacuum effect to take place we have to pull the breath in by using the muscles of the chest and the back and this happens see my shoulders go up and then when that happens the ABS become tense and the breathing process is really difficult okay so our objective today is to get out of the way okay so now we have that first part let's tap into the second part how do we get more breath in when we exhale we simply let go using that we're going to feel that so I'm going to turn a little bit to the side really embarrass myself today and all we're going to do again is watch observe without control so I'm going to exhale I hope you can see my belly I'm going to slump a little bit so you can really see it I'm gonna X I'm going to relax Billy and then I'm going to exhale normal natural normal natural okay my abs are coming in now I still have air in my lungs and that's why I continue to talk so how do we get the air down we simply let go uh-huh attractive right so let's try this together again just watch and relax target your relaxation relax now let us exhale do not try to breathe in don't breathe in just relax uh-huh good good good good it's when we tell our self to breathe that we're pulling stuff in but I want instead let's change the conversation with the body let's again objective is to get out of the way so let us say instead of brood let's think let go or relax whichever one resonates more with you for me I like let go because it feels like I'm really engaging and then they just let go that's how it feels to me good now we want to drop the gel and relax the ABS simultaneously just like our visual aid here just like that I hope that's useful I hope that's useful it was for me so we're going to exhale first put one hand here one hand here and when you are ready just kind of wait for it relax and just wait for the breath uh-huh exhale good exhale uh-huh good now let's put some vocals in this we're just going to go mmm ah I like that pitch it's kind of mid-level pitch and we're going to do a breathing pattern so we're going to exhale and then relax and then MA for a count of seven then on the count of eight we relaxed again and then immediately MA for a count of seven on the count of a we ate we just simply relaxed and then ma again for a count of seven I'll demonstrate first so that you can see what in the world I'm talking about so one hand here one hand here I exhale first ma ma ma tada good now let's try it together here we go exhale when you're ready drop relax MA two three four five six seven ma two three four five six seven ma two three four five six seven great job now interesting information we just kind of tapped into we were able to take in an inhale on account of one y'all just one not this account inhale on a not none of that again just one that's it that's it but if you find that when you relax you're kind of using the muscles of the chest take your time pause the video go back and just observe again without controlling we don't usually use our chest muscles or our back muscles and our natural breathing so just watch pay attention to it and see if you can do it on cue okay wonderful so there you have it the inhale really is the source of the exhale right there would be no exhale without the inhale but the foundation of how great you're going to sound is going to be totally dependent on the inhale we need to get out of the way tap into the body's natural breathing process and create that vacuum effect here's the mantra that I would like for you to remember open in open up if the inhale comes in totally dropped jaw throat open throat and a relaxed belly there is no restriction it will fall in and fly out so if there's no restriction for it going in shouldn't be none for it going out okay I hope you've enjoyed today's video please be sure to give today's video a thumbs up if you enjoyed it or click the
