we finished the Book of Amos today coming to Amos chapter 9 verse 1 and father we ask that you would sanctify us by your truth your word is truth in Jesus name Amen Amos 9 verse 1 the Prophet says I saw the Lord standing by the altar and he said strike the tops of the pillars so let the threats thresholds shake bring them down on the heads of all the people those who are left I will kill with the sword not one will escape none will get away and so God wants to make sure that his people his wicked people are going to die and that's what this verse is talking about there should be no doubt in anyone's mind God will make sure that this happens and he goes on to say in verse 2 though they dig down to the depths of the grave from there my hand will take them though they climb up to the heavens from there I will bring them down it will be impossible to run away from God it will be impossible to hide from him in the day of his wrath 3 though they hide themselves on the top of Carmel there I will hunt them down and seize them though they hide from me at the bottom of the sea there I will command the serpent to bite them just you know God's Way of saying no one's going to escape Carmel was a high mountain with a lot of trees normally it would be a good place to hide but not if the God not if God is the one who's looking for you this is in verse 4 though they are driven into exile by their enemies there I will command the sword to slay them I will fix my eyes upon them for evil and not for good God will watch his people closely to make sure that they die even his people in exile will not escape he will look for them he will find them they must die also you know he used to watch over his people Israel for good now he walked he will watch over them to do harm and it's all because of their sin and not just their sin yes they did many bad things but the final straw was that they wouldn't repent and they went ask for forgiveness verse 5 the Lord the Lord Almighty he who touches the earth and it melts and all who live in it mourn the whole land rises like the Nile then sinks like the river of Egypt the Lord can do anything he wants he can touch the earth and have it melt he can destroy the entire earth without breaking a sweat Israel should keep that in mind everybody should keep that in mind 6 he who builds his lofty palace in the heavens and sets its foundation on the earth who calls for the waters of the sea and pours them out over the face of the land the Lord is his name you know man puts up a building and thinks it's really something and maybe it is nice it might be nice but it doesn't compare to what God can do this verses is describing God's loftiness compared to man's lowliness even when he is at his best it is pretty lowly very lowly compared to God 7 are not you Israelites the same to me as the Kushites declares the Lord did I not bring Israel up from Egypt the Philistines from cave tour and the Arameans from kur you know God is saying now Israel you're not the only nation that I've done favors for and Israel was not the only nation God gave these other people their land as well Roseate surely the eyes of the sovereign Lord are on the sinful Kingdom I will destroy it from the face of the earth yet I will not totally destroy the house of Jacob declares the Lord the Lord head examined Israel very carefully and for a long time and he didn't like what he saw consequently they will no longer be a nation however God will leave a remnant he promises that so there is some hope for the future 9 for I will give the command and I will shake the house of Israel among all the nations as green as shaken and a sieve and not a pebble will reach the ground a sieve is a device to separate good from bad God's punishment will work like a sieve it will remove all the bad people from Israel verse 10 while the sinners among my people will die by the sword all those who say disaster will not overtake or meet us in just in case any of the wicked in Israel are still thinking that they're going to be alright well the Lord dashes their hopes right here he says understand all the sinners among my people will die all of them 11 in that day I will restore David's fallen tenth I will repair its broken pieces restore its ruins and build it as it used to be and so Amos is giving a measure of Hope to God's people actually of course it is God who is giving a measure of hope through Amos they are in for some rough times but those rough times will not last forever God will bring blessing after the punishment when finally his people repent 12 so that they may possess the remnant of Edom and all the nations that bear my name declares the Lord who will do these things Edom represents all of Israel's enemies there will come a time which now is when all nations will seek God and this refers to the church age that we are in today people from all over the world even those nations which used to be Israel's enemies are serving the son of David Jesus Christ no not everyone but there are people from every part of the world who are Christians were truly dedicated to Jesus Christ 13 the days are coming declares the Lord when the Reaper will be overtaken by the ploughman and the planter by the one shredding great grapes new wine will drip from the mountains and flow from all the hills and so God is saying good times real good times are coming for my people I'll bless them with more than what they know what to do with see God isn't against us having a lot he's against us putting whatever we have before him that's what he's against the 14 I will bring back my exiled people Israel they will rebuild the ruined cities and live in them they will plant vineyards and drink their wine they will make gardens and eat their fruit and this began to happen 70 years after they were sent into exile God keeps his promises to bless just as he keeps his promises to punish he says in verse 15 I will plant Israel in their own land never again to be uprooted from the land I have given them says the Lord your God this verse of spiritual Israel the Church of Jesus Christ dad promises everlasting blessing for all of his people Jews and Gentiles who are his in Jesus Christ next time we begin a brand new book the book of Obadiah thanks for joining me we'll see you next time
