so today we are going to make this super sized extra large scrunchie although i am making an extra large one this tutorial can apply to any size scrunchie so let's go so for this simple scrunchy tutorial that's not easy to say you're going to need your sewing machine that i have here it's out of shot you can't see it but i have got a sewing machine here and you're going to need a tape measure so that you can um measure your um fabric but to be fair with this with the scrunchie make it as long or as wide as you like it's it's your scrunchie so you know there's no set rules on size this one is for more of an oversized one because that's they're the ones that i like um but the theory is the same regardless so if you've got a tape measure fantastic if not don't worry so you're going to need some scissors obviously i have fabric scissors but scissors if you don't have fabric scissors use normal scissors just something to cut your fabric again don't stress if you haven't got fabric scissors if they cut they'll do and then you need your chosen fabric so four and this is the one that i've chosen for this so for for this for what i'm doing for the size that i'm doing excuse this wire this is 58 inches long in length and 9 inches across in width and that's just the size that i want you can make scrunchies for toddlers you can make right up to extra you know xxl or that's branded for extra large scrunchies um so yeah don't sweat if you've not got this size material or or a tape measure or fabric scissors you can improvise use what you have um so yeah so that's what you need for this oh sorry there is one other thing that i forgot and i don't know where i've put it but you need elastic and you need a safety pin so two safety pins is better but i think i've only got one so ah i found them so elastic i mean i use this one it is um i'm not sure don't think it's half inch it might be half inch but elastic you get the flat elastic like this or you can get you know the rounded elastic whatever you have and and a safety pin so yeah that's what you're going to need to do this so let's so your first step is open out your fabric obviously mine's long because of the size crunch i'm doing and fold it in half like this right sides together excuse me this might be a little bit off camera so fold it in half right sides together as long as you can now if you're not overly confident you can iron this flat so you've got a seam it's up to you or you can pin along this edge um i don't pin uh because for this i don't need to believe me for a lot of things i have to pin i pin everything but for this i don't and so as long as it's folded in half all the way along um that's brilliant so but one thing we must note don't start at the end let me try and show you don't start here start about here leave an inch or two an inch is enough but if you want to leave more you can an inch or two from the end you need to start and you need to finish exactly the same an inch or two from the end so don't sew all the way to the ends okay it's really important so shall we get so in so i'm trying to say this so everybody can see um i don't have the best equipment as of yet but we'll get in there so i'll pop my light until i can see so as you can see here i'm not so in i'm not starting to sew from the end i've left about an inch and a half i've left and if you do anything quarter of an inch seam allowance half an inch seam allowance whatever you are comfortable with this is your scrunchie the way you want it so pop down your foot press the foot and away you go so first for me i just back stitch and then i carry on stitching so i'm just going to stitch through this i won't speak because the machine my machine is old and loud but it's nice and slow so which is perfect for a beginner and so i'm just going to sew through this and see what the other side if i need to stop and make sure my material is lined up because i didn't pin it then that's what i do i'm having to sit at a really funny angle to try and sew here so please excuse me i forgot to say this is just a straight top stitch nothing fancy just i'm gonna stop there and do a back stitch my fabric i didn't cut absolutely straight so i'm just gonna chop this little bit off here so pull that out and i have got excuse hands ladies or gents i have got a cutter there so you've got your your one long channel now that you've sewn um leaving the two ends unsewn so now what we need to do is turn it the right side in with if you've done a larger scrunchie like myself it's easier to do i mean it's easy enough to do you know just using your hands if you have made a smaller size scrunchie you can do it with a chopstick or a knitting needle just be careful whatever you use don't um don't obviously poke it through the fabric don't ruin the fabric don't make a hole in it i don't want to ruin your um hard work so this is nearly turned in the right way so turn it in the right way turn it out the right way you know shake it all about um so again find your seam keep your theme at the top fold it in half just so i can show you what's going on here so we've got our two pieces and i folded it in half just because it's so long and i need both ends so now we need to take your two bits and you need to pop them together and we need to sew can you see this from here so your two the two bits that you didn't say the two ends pop them together and you say from there all the way down all the way down if i was going around in the circle all the way down until you get until the two you get to the end basically um and if you cut your material dead square unlike me they will match but it doesn't matter so yeah all the way we're sewing all the way up all the way up all the way up so i hope that makes sense let me show you again so take your two pieces together these are your two ends two ends fold it in place them together the two inner parts here there's two inside bits pop them together so we sew all the way from the top all the way down and around and keep popping them together you can pin this together if you like but i do find it's easier if you don't um all the way down to there so i hope that makes sense we're saying from one end all the way to the other of the little little loopy bit okay so i hope you can see this okay i've popped my two ends under the little um foot presser and just take this slow guys because it's a little bit fiddly so go forward and then do your back stitch and then stitch just leave a small seam allowance as small as you can a quarter of an inch is ideal but you need to just keep moving so stop and then move some more around because you are sewing around in a circle so move a bit more just make sure there's nothing else that goes under your your foot i'm going to stop and find that other end wherever she may be mine's tucked in so get them both together and then i'm at the end mine don't meet up do you waxed it forward again if you like mine don't meet up because um i just didn't cut my fabric square but never mind now then let me just cut this because i stitched backwards and forwards so now you've got that all sewn together you can chop off the excess if you did a bigger seam allowance but mine wasn't very big so you just turn that inside out so now you've got you can see that you've got a ring you've got a ring of fabric yeah and so it's all sewn together and then where you've just sewn that seam you've got a little hole can you see that and this little hole is the two ends that we didn't sew together at first mine's quite small so you might want to leave it a bit bigger but that's up to you it's fine all we have to do with this is pop in the um elastic so what you can do at this stage if you want um i don't if they're for me if they're for sale i do do this um you can press it so sort your scene make sure all your seams are together at the top and it's all nice and even and give it a nice um nice press and i do that if these are for sale but if they're for me then i don't bother if i'm honest so do that have so you've got the hole in the middle of in front of you there's little holes here in the front so now take your elastic i measured my elastic to 10 inches but again whatever's um different it differs on the size of the uh scrunchie that you're making can you see that so mine's like before the flat elastic so normally you would take another safety pin on the other end and pin this here at one end so you don't lose it but i've already got one safety pin so i'm just gonna make sure so you pop your safety pin into the hole and push it along all right so just keep pushing keep pushing the safety pin and then it gathers up you can um hold the end of it in your finger which is what i do and just keep feeding it through keep feeding my um safety is a little bit small but the bigger you get the easier it is to pass through your fingers so just keep feeding it through all the way all the way all the way all the way all the way and keep going until you get back round to the other end almost done guys you've almost made your first scrunchie there'll be no limits to your hair fashions going forward unless you're like me then it's normally mum bun getting things done i've got a t-shirt that says that um because i'm nearly there obviously just don't let go of the other end if you've not um it's here in my hand if you've not pinned it down try and stay along the seam to keep it all um not not twisted there we are that we're through through the other end right so then you can take out your safety pin don't let go and you've got your two pieces and then all i do here is tie them so give them a tie obviously because i've cut 10 inches i don't want to tie it too short so i need some elastic and i've tied two knots but what you do have to make sure is that it's pulled really really tight because otherwise this elastic will move and i don't care i'm gonna cut off that little bit here of them right so pull that really really tight as tight as you can so that the elastic doesn't slip and then pop that into the little hole all right and now all that's left to do the little hole that we left we just need to fold that in nice and neatly like say you can iron this to make sure so if you can see i don't know how well you can see that so just fold them together so we just sew do a little top stitch along that seam so pop your hem under there make sure it's all folded over nice and neat to keep it quite close to the edge and have an idea of where you're sewing to so you know when to stop do a little back stitch and then like i said you would use a thread that you can't see i've used white because that's what's in my machine pull up cut that off and you're all sewn so as you can see um i hope that's focusing okay i've top stitched down that edge and then all that's left is to ruffle out your new scrunchie that you've just made and there you go look at that big super sized scrunchie for your hair it's nice on your wrist you'll be one of those um what they're called them girls call themselves go around with the scrunches on the wrist if anyone knows pop it in the comments you can be one of those bisco girls yeah it's 38 too old to be a disco girl says the dolphins some of you will know what i mean others are probably not um so yeah there you go you
