in this video i'm going to show you the easiest way to make puzzle books to sell on amazon kdp or to sell as printable digital products welcome to my channel my name is caroline and puzzle books are a really great niche to create books for amazon kdp because one they are very popular on amazon they are some of the most popular books on amazon they can also be sold as printables which is where you sell the puzzle as a digital file and the customer prints it out themselves you can sell puzzles as printables on your own website or on a third-party marketplace like etsy and if we just head over to amazon quickly and we'll just take a quick look at the puzzle book niche i'm just going to look very broadly i'm not drilling down into any specific niche but just to give an idea of how popular these books are we can see here by these numbers this is the bsr or the best seller rank a best seller rank determines the popularity of a book in the amazon store or in the amazon marketplace the lower the number the better you want your number to be as close to one as you possibly can so as we can see here this particular puzzle book is 938 in the amazon store that's 938 out of every single book that is on amazon we have this one here with a bestseller rank of just over 24 000. this one here just over 15 000 this one here has a rank of 2581 and you can see here by how many reviews that are left an indication of the amount of people that are buying these books even this one over here it has nearly 9 000 reviews and it's just over 1 000 in the amazon store overall so these books are selling a lot of copies the second great thing about puzzle books is that it is one of those niches where you can make a truly unique book a book that is different from all the others within that niche what i mean by this is that with a lot of low content books they are all the same as each other and it is really hard to make them different from each other for example a notebook it's just a book of line pages it's very hard to make that different from all the other notebooks on amazon same with journals and same if you are creating something like a logbook if you're creating a logbook of some kind there is only a certain type of interior that you're going to be able to create for that particular logbook and it can be hard to differentiate your book from all the others that are going to be for sale on amazon in that niche but the puzzle book niche is one of those rare niches where you can actually make a totally unique book and that's what i'm going to show you in this video for this tutorial i'm going to be showing you how to make a word search puzzle book because for one word search puzzles are very popular across a whole range of different people everybody knows what word searches are and enjoys doing them and you can create word search puzzles for kids and for adults so it doesn't really matter what age of person you are targeting you'll be able to create a word search puzzle for them now the great thing is that you do not need to be making these puzzles from scratch or making them manually or anything like that we are going to be using a software or an app that creates these puzzles a whole puzzle book in just a few minutes and that's how we make books puzzle books that are unique and different from any other word search puzzle book available on amazon the software that i am using is the puzzles generator software and specifically the instant puzzles generator this app allows us to create word search puzzles i have links to this app in the description box below if you do want to go check it out so i'm just going to show you how to use this software to create a word search puzzle book all we need to do is click on access now and this takes us to the page where we can create our file so we click on create a puzzle give it a name whatever name you want and we click create we now have a word search file down here which we click view to be able to edit this brings us to the page where we need to upload our words so yes we do need to do a little bit of work here and provide this app with a list of words that we want included in the word search puzzles so at this point you might be thinking well i don't have lists of words or i don't have time to sit and think of hundreds of lists of words for this puzzle book and that is totally fine so what we are going to do is go to google and search for a list generator and this will bring up a whole heap of websites that provide random lists of words now one that i found is called randomlists.com but you can use whichever one you prefer but the reason i like this one is because it has lists of words by topic so it might seem a little odd to have hundreds of word searches in a puzzle book with just a bunch of random words in it that are not related to each other and that don't mean anything at all to each other it would be a lot more enjoyable for the person doing the puzzle if you created a word search around a certain topic or a certain genre or a certain niche for example let's say that we want to create a word search puzzle around animals i can choose this link here which will take me to random animals if we scroll down here we can have just animals in general we can choose from birds fish or snakes so i'm just going to leave it at animals i'm going to say that i want 25 words in my word search and i don't want the images because i just want the list of words and i click rerun so that gives us a list of 25 different animals and i can use that list in my word search puzzle now when we head back here to the instant puzzles generator software we need to upload a text file all we need to do is open up a text file program or a program that allows you to save the file as a text file then we go back to our list of words and we highlight them we copy them and we paste them into our text file and you need to create a list of words for every puzzle that you want in your book so let's say that you want a puzzle book with 50 word searches in it or a hundred word searches in it then you are going to need to provide 50 or 100 sets of words to go into your word search text file so let's go back to the random list generator website okay so let's say we want to just maybe get a list around random things i'm going to go down here to random things i'm going to change the data set to flowers and we can do a word search around flowers same thing i'm going to enter in that i want 25 words and we now have 25 words or 25 names of flowers highlight it copy take it back to our text file and paste now if you see here i left a blank line between the list of words this tells the software that this is for a new word search puzzle so between every set of words that indicates a new puzzle you need to leave a blank line so let's go get another list going to click here onto music and we're going to do musical instruments so let's say we want 25 musical instruments highlight these and pop them in our text file and so on and so on and you continue doing that until you have as many lists of words for the word search puzzles you want in your book now something else that you can do is you can have a title on each page so at the start of each list we just need to write title with a colon and then whatever you want your title to be and then we just save that text file now we head back to our instant puzzle generator software and we want to click upload words and we're going to select that file that text file that we just created and it automatically populates this file with all of the lists of words that we created so we can see here that the first one was the animals and it has all the animals listed here that we need to find and they are scrambled around in the word search that's the second one which was flowers and that was the third one which was musical instruments so that would continue on for however many word search puzzles that you have created with your list of words there are some things that you can do to edit these according to your preference if we click over here this is a global setting global setting means that anything you change here will change for every single word search puzzle that is within your book so if we click this setting here you can change the font if you prefer to change the font there are a lot of fonts to choose from here we can change the size of the title here if you want it bigger or smaller and this is where you can choose the puzzle font size so this is the letters within here so if you want the letters a little bit bigger for example let's say we increase them to 38 the letters will get better now this controls the grid size which in a sense will control the ease or the difficultness of the puzzle let's say you want it really really hard the hardest it can be then we can do 29 by 29 which means there are a lot more letters in there for you to try and find your word so the less letters in the puzzle the easier it's going to be to find your words so if we go down to a 17 by 17 or if we go over to a 10 by 10 you're gonna see it's going to be a lot easier to find the words as opposed to if you have a lot more letters in there so let's say we do 22 by 22. you can adjust how these clues appear at the bottom as well so you can have them to the right the bottom you can have all the words in two columns or three columns or four so we just need to have a look and see what's going to look best is it going to look best as well it's not going to look best as four columns it's probably going to look best as three columns and then that gives more room for the actual word search puzzle on the page as well so you just need to adjust that to make sure your words all fit on the page fine without anything being cut off here you can add internal lines if you prefer your word searches to have lines as a grid like that and then this will adjust how you want the solutions pages to look you can have the puzzle to show only the solution words they can circle the letters or the words can have a bounding box my personal preference is having a bounding box if we click this little button here it will show the solutions and that's what it means by a bounding box the box just highlights the whole word to show the person where the word is check their answers if they can't find a word and they just want to find out where it is they can go to the solution and see that from there what you'll want to do is you will want to download your document so this is how you're going to create the interior file that goes into your amazon kdp account to publish on amazon to do that all we do is click this arrow here which is the download button and you can select your file type now if you're happy with how it looks exactly as it is you can just download it as a pdf that is the file type that you need to upload into amazon if you want to do any further editing in a separate program for example maybe you want to add some images or something on the page you can download it as a png or a jpeg and open that in your favorite graphic design software or you can download it as a powerpoint file and do any necessary edits that you want to do in there i'm just going to download as a pdf this gives you the option of what size to download the file you can download the file as any option that amazon kdp provides so any sized book that amazon does is available for selection in here and i'm going to set it as a 6x9 you can adjust your page numbering formats here and whether you want the page numbers center aligned or not and this adjusts how many solutions you have per page i would not suggest having just one solution per page because that will just really increase the amount of pages in your book and also the printing costs which means the royalty that you make is going to be less solutions do not need to take up the whole page they just need to be able to see what the solution to the puzzle is so i would suggest having four solutions per page from there we click download and we have a file available now to upload into amazon if we open up this file you can see this is what it's going to look like we've got the first word search the second and the third and then we'll have the solutions page at the bottom or at the very end so you can see here you don't need your solutions to be huge they do not need to fill the whole page you can easily see here with four solutions per page where the actual words are in the word search now that you have the interior of your puzzle book you will need to create a cover for it so when we upload books to amazon kdp we need two files the interior file which is the interior pages and we need a cover file the cover file includes the front cover the back cover and the spine of the book to do this you can use whatever graphic design program that you prefer or you can use canva which is free to use on its basic plan if you do not have access to or you do not know how to use any of the graphic design programs such as photoshop and illustrator but what you will want to do first is you will want to go to the kdp website to get the dimensions and the template for your cover we need to make sure that the cover is the correct size and that is dependent on the size of the book the amount of pages in the book whether the pages are cream or white and what type of cover you have chosen for your book and by doing this before you start creating your cover it's going to save you a lot of time in creating the cover so all we need to do is select the type of binding which is essentially the cover we have the choice of paperback or hardcover for the most part a puzzle book is going to have a paperback cover the interior type is just going to be black and white we're going to be having white paper the turn direction is always left to right and we're going to want to create it in inches because at this point we need to select the correct size trim for the file we created in the puzzle software so if you remember i created my interior of puzzle book as a 6x9 so i now need to select that i'm going to be creating a 6x9 cover and then here we enter the amount of pages that your pdf file from your interior file is so let's say for example you end up creating 100 word searches so you will have 100 pages of word searches and then with four solutions per page at the end you're going to have an additional 25 pages with the solutions on which means your book is going to be 125 pages in total but all you really need to do for that is open up that pdf file of your interior and just have a look how many pages it is from here we click calculate dimensions and it will tell us the dimensions of the cover file and what it needs to be then we just go back to canva we click create a design we want a custom size and we change this to inches to match what it said over here in the cover calculator and here is the dimensions the total dimensions of your cover file so they're going to be 12.531 by 9.25 and we click create a new design and that is the size of our cover file so remember this includes our front cover our back cover and our spine the next thing i suggest that you do is download the template then what you want to do is upload the cover file into canva or into whatever graphic design program you are using when you click on it it will get inserted onto the page and what this does is it shows you where the trim lines are so there are certain places that you shouldn't put anything any text or images and things like that and so you want to just have this file included so you can make sure that all your text and images are not going to get cut off when the book is being made so for example generally you wouldn't want to put anything down in this corner because that is where the barcode is going to go the black solid line is trim so that's where the book is going to be cut so you will not want any text to go past that black line basically you want to keep everything on the white space to make sure that everything is going to be on your cover where you want it to be and depending on what version of canva you have whether it's the basic or the pro version there are elements that you can use and fonts that you can use to include on your cover if you are using your own graphic design program you can use images from stock image websites to create your cover and so once your cover has been created you also just need to download that file as a pdf to be able to upload into your amazon kdp account so now that you have your two files all you need to do is upload those into your kdp account to get your puzzle book for sale on the amazon marketplace i hope that you
