[Music] today i'm going to show you how to make a fermenter for just under 10 by converting an inexpensive food safe bucket into a 2 gallon fermenter great for beginners this fermenter is easy to make and its smaller size is perfect for experimenting and testing out recipes i'm trent mooshow and this is the brew shop let's make a bucket for mentor in order to make fermented beverages you need a fermenter and if you feel overwhelmed by the thought of making large batches this 2-yawn fermenter will be a great way to get started before we begin please take a moment to subscribe for more home brewing diys and easy recipe videos for this project we're going to need a two gallon food safe bucket and lid i picked this one up from a local hardware store and it costs about five dollars you'll also need rubber grommets for the airlock i bought a pack of these off amazon which i've linked below it comes with quite a few so you have a lot left over for other projects optionally i'll be adding a spigot to make racking out of the fermenter easier i do highly recommend adding this unless you have an auto siphon the tools we'll need are a drill drill bits of various sizes i'm using 5 16 3 8 and half inch bits some tape scrap wood and something to mark with like a sharpie now let's get started first we need to create a hole for an airlock place the lid on top of the scrap piece of wood the wood will help create a clean hole when drilling and help the plastic from cracking then mark on top of the lid with some tape in the center using a 3 8 drill bit i drilled through the lid to create a hole i found for the grommets i had to size the hole up a little more than 3 8 for the grommet to fit snugly and hold the airlock once the hole was the correct size i just add the grommet by squeezing it into place that completes the top next on the body of the bucket i place some tape near the bottom where the spigot will go again optional but recommended i temporarily placed the spigot and outlined in sharpie so i know where to drill be sure to account for the bottom part of the spigot so the bucket can sit on a surface starting with my smaller drill bit i drill the hole slowly sizing up so that the plastic doesn't crack under too much pressure my largest drill bit was a half inch so i had to move the drill around the hole until it reached the desired size once the spigot fits i can now remove the tape and install the spigot most spigots have a gasket on the outside that goes on before putting in the bucket and on the inside there is a nut that tightens down and creates a water tight seal now is a good time to check for leaks fill your bucket up with water and look for any drips i had a few so i tightened the nut a bit more until it stopped dripping if for some reason you still have a leak you can use food safe silicone on the outside of your bucket would you like to see more diy or budget friendly videos let me know next i'm going to add liquid measuring marks on the side of the bucket so we can easily know how much liquid is in the fermenter an easy way is to fill up a 64 ounce or half gallon growler with water and pour it into the bucket i then mark the water line on the outside with a piece of tape i continue this process until i reached the top of the bucket then using a sharpie i marked along the top edge of the tape and then peeled it off which left a near perfect line on this bucket the bottom lip is the two down mark so i didn't mark there now just pop your top on and boom you have a fermenter this is perfect for any fermentation you want to do whether it's small batches of beer wine cider tapachi even kombucha the sky is the limit it's a great fermenter for beginners or if you're looking to do small batch experiments it's easy to start home brewing on a budget with this simple and inexpensive bucket fermenter let me know if you make this or if you have any questions thanks for watching [Music]
