hey there my name is salandrak and welcome back to my Terraria version 1.4 Journeys and Beginner's Guide Series last time we downed the Wall of Flesh and entered hard mode so in this episode I'll be going over all the things you'll want to do in early hard mode to gear up and get stronger and otherwise prepare for your next big challenges the mechanical bosses as always timestamps are down in the description and since there are a lot of Topics in this video feel free to skip around to whatever info you're looking for and let me know down in the comments what is the first thing you like to do when you get into hard mode now let's get to it [Music] in my video about preparing for Hard Mode I talked about preventative measures you can take to protect your pylon Villages and other important areas from biome spread once you're in hard mode well now that you're in hard mode one of the first things you'll likely want to do is locate the hard mode V and check all your pylon villages to see if any have gotten or are at risk of getting contaminated by biome spread if you followed my advice and built your wall of flesh Runway out of stone you should be able to quickly locate the hollow and evil sides of the base of the V but beyond that you'll want to warp back up to the surface and probably run out both sides from the middle to locate where precisely the two sides of the V are at if it looks like they might spread somewhere you don't want them to be now is probably a good time to go ahead and dig out tunnels as explained in that pre-hardmode video to ensure that nothing spreads where it isn't wanted you'll also want to warp to each of your pylon villages to see if they are still the same biome here in the world that I started this series my main base took a direct hit from the Crimson side of the hard mode V I can still use this as my spawn point in crafting and storage area but since the area is Crimson now all of the NPCs have moved out and the pylon has stopped functioning lucky for me I had an NPC Motel area nearby that is still regular Forest as for cleanup short of manually removing all of the evil blocks in the area there's not a lot I can do right now to get things back to normal digging out all the evil blocks and grass is extremely tedious and makes the area look all sorts of ugly and the only other cleanup option available at this point purification powder from the dryad has an extremely short range once I've gotten the contaminator though which arrives with the steam Punker after a mechanical boss has been defeated it will be really easy to clean up using the protective tunnels I had made before entering hard mode but what about the hollow well the good news here is that NPCs are more than happy to live in the beautiful hollow biome and because there are Hollow versions of forest snow desert and Cavern any pylons previously placed in these biomes will continue to function in the now Hollow hybrid versions of these biomes now one last biome contamination issue I'll mention at this point is the jungle if the evil side of your V is on the same side as your jungle you should definitely locate where the evil is at on the surface and if it is anywhere near your jungle make sure you block it from spreading into the jungle and if your jungle got hit by the V you should immediately take action to protect the jungle from further spread evil biome in the jungle will convert the mud blocks into dirt and could potentially wreck your jungle biome and is a total pain to clean up and restore I've personally never had this become an issue but I've also played it pretty safe and have quarantined any evil areas in or near my jungle as soon as I found them just load up on all your mining speed boosters and dig out wide buffer zones around the evil areas and you should be fine and once you've gotten a few hard mode or upgrades which we'll talk about in a minute this will go even faster you don't need to worry about Hollow getting into your jungle though as it won't be able to convert jungle grass into Hollow or otherwise spread in the jungle as for the rest of your V it's really up to you whether you want to contain it or just let it do its thing so long as it doesn't interfere with any of my pylon Villages I generally don't care if it spreads out into the other biomes except the jungle as there are several biomes you might need to be either Hollow or evil in order to get certain items and crafting materials meaning that biome variety including infected ones is generally a good thing once I've checked on all my pylon Villages and located the top and bottom of the V the next thing I like to do is get a few good hard mode upgrades because as you'll quickly discover early hard mode is a lot like starting the game over again where mobs can take a long time to kill and are more than eager to quickly kill you if you aren't careful so first things first head over to your Witch Doctor during the night time and get some new Wings if the witch doctor is living in the jungle biome which he should be and it is night he will sell the leaf Wings which are the easiest Wings to get at this stage of the game and are a significant upgrade from fledgling wings and or rocket boots they're pretty pricey at 75 Gold without any happiness bonuses but since he has to be in the jungle to sell them you should be able to buy them for quite a bit less the other Wings you can get in early hard mode all require Souls of Flight which drop from high elevation and pretty dangerous wyverns as well as various other crafting items all of which are much easier to farm if you already have decent Wings if you're low on cash move on to the next tasks then come back later once you've farmed up some money after I've gotten some wings the next thing I like to do in most playthroughs is go to a spider Cavern and farm the hard mode black recluse spiders for spider fangs this was also discussed in my preparing for Hard Mode guide so hopefully you already know where such a cavern is located and have already prepped the area for safe farming if you haven't or haven't seen that video the quick and dirty is the black recluse spiders drop the spider Fang item which is used for crafting the Summoner spider armor spider stop and Spider Queen stuff and the spiders also drop the magic poison staff crafting a full set of armor and both summoned weapons requires a total of 76 fangs which usually doesn't take very long to get the armor combined with either a spider staff or Abigail works pretty well in early hard mode and will make the next task pretty easy if you prefer playing as a different class though or suffer from Arachnophobia feel free to skip the spiders entirely next on my list of early hard mode progression is to bless the world with hard mode or and do a whole bunch of mining every time you kill the Wall of Flesh it gives you a bone hammer and using this Hammer you can smash the evil altars that are frequently located in your evil biome namely demon altars in the corruption and Crimson altars in the crimson the first altar you smash will bless your world with either Cobalt or Palladium ore and the second altar will grant either mithril or oracalcum and the third will either gift Adamantite or titanium subsequent altars in a given world will continue to cycle through whatever ore you got from the first three but each round of altar smash will produce less of a given ore in the world than the previous time the world was blessed with that ore additionally every time you smash an altar there's about a 66 chance that a random stone block located somewhere in the cavern layer will be converted to either the hollow's Pearl stone or the stone variant of your world's evil biome and these blocks will then start to spread accordingly given the diminishing returns of ore created coupled with the risk of creating new evil and Hollow areas with each altar smashed it is generally considered optimal to smash no more than 12 altars as an alternative to Smashing altars you could also just go fishing as the various crates you fish up in hard mode have a chance to drop various types of ore and bars including the new hard mode Metals Burwood crates can drop both variants of the first tier of hard mode Metals mithril crates can drop both rates of the first two tiers of hard mode metals and titanium crates can drop the strongest two tiers of the hard mode Metals hard mode biome crates can drop all types of oars and bars and while you're fishing you might also snag up some good weapon upgrades such as the blade tongue sword from the Crimson the toxicarp ranged weapon from the corruption or the crystal serpent magic weapon from the hollow Each of which will be nice upgrades from your pre-hardmode weapons just understand that fishing up enough materials to put together full sets of armor will likely be pretty time consuming and tedious but if you really want to avoid the potential of additional pockets of evil or Hollow springing up in random parts of your world then this is the way to do it personally I've never used this method and have always just gone with smashing altars and then going mining speaking of which here's how you do it once you've smashed all the altars you're planning on smashing in order to progress through the new tiers of hard mode ore you'll need to start at the bottom and work your way up the easiest way to do that is to load up on mining and spelunker potions and then go fall down a hellevator somewhere exploring any large caves or tunnels off to the sides chances are you'll quickly locate the blue colored cobalt or orangish looking Palladium depending on which ore your world was blessed with and so long as you have at least a Molten Pickaxe you'll be able to mine it although you can make full sets of armor and various melee and ranged weapons with this lowest tier of hard mode or I usually don't bother as the only item you really need is the pickaxe as it is necessary to mine the next tier of War which is either mithril or oracalcum so to get your Cobalt or Palladium pickaxe just mine 54 or then smelt that into 18 bars and make the pickaxe now brief note that instead of the pickaxe you can also make drills with hard mode ore I personally never make drills as I can't stand the noise and they don't double well as a weapon compared to the pickaxes stat wise they are functionally comparable with the drill being slightly faster but the pickaxe having a longer range however because drills aren't swung overhead they can't get the same reforging modifiers so unless you actually like the noise the drills make you're probably better off just sticking with the pickaxes once you've got your first pickaxe or drill it's time to head back to your Elevator Shaft and go looking for the next tier of ore either silvery blue mithril or pink colored or a calcum this time you'll be after at least 100 ore as you'll need enough bars to make both a pickaxe as well as an anvil the latter of which will replace your old anvil in your crafting area and once that's taken care of time to go mining again this time for the reddish Adamantite or metallic looking titanium top priority is getting 30 of this terrible as it is needed to make a new Forge by combining the ore with your old hell Forge which must be in your inventory or a nearby open chest but not placed out in the world and is crafted using your new anvil with the new Anvil and Forge you'll now be set up to start crafting all sorts of hard mode items and upgrades and one of the first things you'll likely want to put together is at least one new set of armor each of the different types of hard mode ore can be used to make a unique set of armor Each of which has three different helmet options one for melee one for ranged and one for magic sorry Summoners no love for you until you get the hollowed armor the Cobalt set is pretty meh and generally not worth making as it has no particular special perks and just boosts various stats the Palladium set though is worth making if you found enough Palladium while mining as it has a nice health regen set bonus that triggers whenever you hit an enemy and can make General early hard mode activities a bit easier like Cobalt the mithril set also doesn't have any special perks but its overall stats are good enough that it's probably worth making if you have enough mithril and don't have enough ore for a higher level set or a calcum is also pretty decent as you're working on getting a higher tier set of armor and has the special ability of shooting flower petals at your enemies for some extra damage what you'll probably want to focus on is an armor set made from the top tier hard mode Metals either Adamantite or Titanium or one of the hybrid sets made from the third tier of metal the hybrid melee Ranger Frost armor or the hybrid magic Summoner forbidden armor both the Adamantite and titanium armor sets have very strong stats and titanium armor has the special effect of creating spinning shards around you that will damage enemies that get too close either of these sets is perfectly fine for all of your early hard mode activities including taking down the mechanical bosses as for the hybrid sets they are also very strong particularly if you enjoy the hybrid setups the downside of these sets though is that they require fighting rare mobs in a sandstorm or snowstorm in the desert or snow biome respectively as you'll need Frost cores from Ice Golems to make the frost armor and forbidden fragments from Sand Elementals to make the Forbidden armor unfortunately these storms don't necessarily happen when you want them to so if you have your eyes on either of these sets be sure to pay attention to the weather whenever you're on the surface for if it's raining anywhere in the world the snow biome will have the needed blizzard and if the wind speeds are over 30 miles per hour the desert will be having a sandstorm once you've gotten your upgraded armor set of choice or have a lower tier set and are still working on a higher one it's time to start farming additional hard mode crafting materials and upgrades and you'll likely want to start out by farming soles of light and Souls of Night from the cavern level Hollow and evil biomes respectively these Souls have a decent chance of dropping from almost any mob killed in the cavern layers of these biomes including the underworld and will be needed for all sorts of crafting recipes throughout the rest of the game if you made your wall of flesh Runway out of stone then the area is hit by your hard mode V are pretty good open areas to farm Souls early on as the underworld itself doesn't get much of a hard mode mob upgrade until after at least one mechanical boss has been defeated the only new Mobs you'll see in the Underworld are regular mimics which drop some really nice items including some great accessories you'll want to collect and the tortured Soul who can be turned into the tax collector NPC if you clean him up with some purification powder if fighting in the Underworld where the hollow or your evil biome are active you will get a mix of Underworld and biome specific mob spawning but as the underworld is usually pretty open you should have good space for moving around and taking things out another great option for farming Souls as well as item upgrades now and throughout the rest of hard mode is to use your Cavern Lair fighting arena assuming you built one as I discussed in the preparing for Hard Mode video in order to convert it to the biome of your choice to swap the stone blocks in the center of the Arena to the biome blocks of your choice you'll also want to set up biome block islands in the spawn Zone off screen as many mobs require an eligible block of their matching biome to actually spawn just make sure these islands are far enough away from the edges of your Arena so that they don't allow the biome in question to spread beyond the area you want it to be also if you aren't in a hurry then you don't have to swap out all the existing pre-existing stone blocks to scatter a few here and there and biome spread will take care of the rest for you now is also a good time to mention biome mimics namely Hollow mimics and the evil biomimics the corrupt mimic and the Crimson mimic these are very strong mobs that look like chests but we'll try to eat your face off because mimics can phase through solid blocks and like to charge at you you'll probably want to fight them in areas where you have plenty of room to move around to avoid their attacks so the underworld or your Cavern Lair fighting arena are ideal locations for taking them down always be prepared to get out of their way when they lunge at you or try to fall down on you and if using ranged weapons on Expert or Master mode be very cautious about shooting at them when they sit still and pretend to be just a chest as they'll reflect your shots back at you each of these mimics can drop a grappling hook as well as an awesome weapon for melee ranged and Magic users and the evil mimics both dropped an accessory while all of them dropped greater healing and Mana potions if you're not getting the drops you want or aren't getting as many mimics as you like in your Arenas they can also be spawned manually by crafting a key of light or key of night using 15 Souls of light or night respectively and then placing that key in an empty chest this can be done anywhere in the world including your surface level fighting arena which can be nice as you will have plenty of room to move around and won't have to worry about other mobs getting in the way while farming mobs mining ore or otherwise killing the various new hard mode enemies you'll also want to keep your eye out for all sorts of new hard mode accessories many of these accessories will provide immunity to various status ailments and can be combined together at your tinkerers Workshop to eventually form a single item the ankh shield which will protect you from most status ailments in the game there are also all sorts of new accessories that provide other protections or damage output boosts including Buffs to the various types of specific class damage I generally just dump these all into a specific chest of my base and sell any duplicates If an item has the material tag in the description be sure to show it to your guide to see what it can be combined with as an upgrade and when in doubt on what something does or where to get it just check the wiki also once you've gotten a few decent upgrades it's probably a good time to farm the Wall of Flesh a few more times to get any class emblems you might specifically want as well as a few extras as they too can be upgraded into even more powerful accessories later on Beyond mimics and randomly dropped items there are lots of Hard Mode upgrades that can be obtained through various means that you may want to focus on or at least acquire so you can test them out and see what weapons and whatnot you like to use the class setups guide on the wiki link down in the description is an excellent resource for this purpose and I highly recommend that you refer to it regularly to get ideas of what items to focus on farming it would take far too long to go over all these upgrades in this video but here are a few of my personal favorites for each class and yes at this point in the game you really should start to focus your Loadout on supporting a specific class though you're always welcome to switch to a different class whenever you like for melee the Dow of Powell is a great flail weapon that can cause the confused debuff to enemies and has crafted from Seven Souls of light seven Souls of Night and a Dark Shard and a light Shard from dark and light mummies that spawn in evil deserts and Hollow deserts respectively if you like yo-yos you'll likely want to farm the amarok which is a rare drop in the hard mode snow biome or the Hellfire which is a rare drop from the underworld Jane Guillotines from corrupt mimics are pretty awesome as are the fetid bognox from Crimson mimics for Rangers I'm a big fan of the Onyx Blaster which is crafted from two dark shards from mummies 10 Souls of Night and the shotgun purchased from the Arms Dealer in hard mode other great weapons include the dart rifle from corrupt mimics or the dart gun from Crimson mimics and the Daedalus storm bow from Hollow mimics which is one of the best weapons for taking on the mechanical bosses especially if you're using holy arrows unlike the hard mode or weapons the Adamantite and titanium repeaters are also pretty decent options Mages have a wide variety of weapons with an even wider variety of effects to experiment with for general purpose combat the Crystal Storm works pretty well it is crafted from the Spell Tome purchased from The Wizard 15 Souls of light and 20 Crystal Shards that grow on pearlstone and pink eyes in the underground Hollow another great option is the crystal serpent obtained by fishing in the hollow bio but seriously there are so many crazy Mage weapons I highly recommend collecting them and trying them out to see what you like as for Summoners well they're a bit neglected at this stage of the game we've already covered the spider armor and spider set as well as the hybrid forbidden armor but in terms of weapons there aren't a lot of options unless you're ready to take on Queen slime or the dread Nautilus Each of which I'll cover in separate videos surprisingly the obsidian armor set remains pretty useful in early hard mode if you favor whips and you can hit once with the snap Thorn to get the speed buff and then switch to the firecracker from the wall of flesh for some good DPS output the Cool Whip is also really good at this stage of the game and is crafted with eight Souls of light 8 Souls of Night and one Frost core from the previously mentioned ice Golems again though these are just a few of the many options available and I highly recommend that you refer to the wiki and try out a bunch of different setups to find what you like best before I wrap up the video I need to mention that there are several unpleasant things that might randomly happen while you're getting established in early hard mode the easiest is a goblin Invasion which has a 1 in 60 chance of occurring each day in a hard mode assuming you've already defeated one in pre-hard mode for the most part it's basically the same as the pre-hardmode invasion though it does have a new Goblin Summoner that summons Goblin apparitions to attack you he's quite a bit more difficult than his pre-hardmode compatriots but as he drops a couple of good hard mode weapons you'll definitely want to take him out Blood Moons likewise get an upgraded mob at this stage the clown who throws chattering teeth bombs that will quickly blow you up and who drops the banana ring weapon a decent Boomerang type weapon for melee characters there are also a handful of new Mobs that can be spawned by fishing in a blood moon but I'll cover them in a separate video the Pirate Invasion is one of several new hard mode events that can start happening once a single evil altar has been destroyed with the 1 in 30 chance of occurring until it has been defeated the first time and afterwards has a 1 in 50 chance of randomly spawning I'll do a separate video on this event later as it can be pretty hectic if you aren't prepared for it though quick Pro tip an underground bunker beneath the volcano trap along with an auto swing weapon will allow you to defeat The Invasion pretty easily and last but certainly not least there's a 1 in 10 chance that one of the three mechanical bosses namely Skeletron Prime the twins or the Destroyer can randomly spawn after the first evil altar has been destroyed and they'll continue to randomly spawn until defeated I will of course cover each of these bosses in their own separate videos but for now be advised that if you know you aren't ready to fight them you can either YOLO yourself against them and probably die really quickly which will cause them to despawn or upon receiving their Telltale message at dusk if you either log out of the game or head underground and stay there for about 90 seconds after the message appeared then the boss won't actually spawn and you can go about your business without fear of getting ganked for me personally I find early hard mode to be one of the most exciting and enjoyable stages of the game as there are so many new upgrades to get tons of new monsters to fight and a whole lot of fun to be had hopefully this video has given you some guidance and Direction regarding things to do and try but if I could leave you with a few final words of advice it would be these have fun in early hard mode and feel free to experiment with a variety of loadouts and play styles thanks for watching and I'll see you in the next one cheers [Music]
