When I was teaching (in MA) I went to a few stores and asked for donations of school supplies that didn't sell. The only positive response I got was from Family Dollar which donated all kinds of stuff, including the plastic shoe boxes for me to put supplies in. Of course the manager of the store was a parent of one of my students.
