you know I was thinking tonight what I'm going to give our pastor does a great job balancing out the Word of God to us now we say it all the time around here three to thrive but I was thinking and there are a lot of exceptions to this but generally speaking pastor Chapel usually is evangelism in Sunday morning it's usually equipping the Saints Sunday night and it's usually encouraging the Saints on Wednesday night now there's a lot of exceptions to that but there's a balance with that by the way that's why it's so important that you come we say that the cliche three to thrive well why is it three to thrive you need that evangelism to get people in here to see him get saved the equipping of the Saints on Sunday night and then the encouraging of the body of Christ on Wednesday night so let me encourage you to do all three of those I will not be able to even light a candle wonder what our pastor does on Sunday nights I do think that he says it all the time I don't think he needs to say it I can tell his heart is on Sunday nights and and I think it has a lot to do with the equipping of the Saints so I would like to give you a message tonight that will help equip you now if you hear this message tonight the title of it is the answer to anxiety and you say though that's not me I have not anxious at all I'm not stressed out there's none of that I guarantee you part of equipping the Saints is to do the what work of the ministry so what you get tonight whether or not you can use it for yourself you can definitely help others with it as well when I teach a college class I do not believe I'm speaking to 75 people in that class I believe I am speaking to all the people that they're going to minister to it I believe that tonight I believe that what I give you tonight whether or not it was directly go like wow I needed that I guarantee you you know somebody that needs an answer to anxiety tonight take your Bibles and turn to Philippians chapter number four I thank again my pastor for the opportunity to preach tonight it is a great joy I don't know if I've ever done a Sunday morning Sunday night before and here at Lancaster Baptist and I've thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity today to do it now today's are this evenings lesson on equipping is one of my messages from my class an introduction to biblical counseling and tonight we're going to look at anxiety fear stress worry and we're going to we're going to look at that now I want to share a couple things about my counseling class first of all is my definition every class period for the entire semester when we start the class I always have them give me the definition of biblical counseling and biblical counseling is changing behavior biblically and when you come to church that's what you the spirit you ought to come with you ought to come with Lord change my behavior biblically young people just went to camp and you can see they made decision decisions to change their behavior biblically they're going to take they're going to deal with issues different you can tell by the messages that they heard they'd come back to change their behavior biblically and that's what current that's what counseling is counseling is changing behavior biblically now there's a little outline that I give that you can use for almost any area if it's bitterness if it's sexual addiction tonight it's on anxiety a little three point outline it's I didn't come up with it it's been used for years and probably will continue but it is a help you take any issue that you're dealing with that you want to change behavior biblically and there's a three point outline because or causes the consequence or consequences and the cure you have causes you have consequences you have a cure and that's exactly what we're going to look at tonight we're going to look at the causes of anxiety we're going to look at the consequences of anxiety and then we're gonna look at the cure because the one thing we have is we have the Bible that is sufficient to change our lives we come to God's Word and the Word of God can make us change the world doesn't have that so when they count so they may do a Rogerian type of counseling where they just sit and listen and ask questions and make people feel real good and take all their money from them or maybe it's skinner ism where they're going to try to you know be by behavioral change but there's no answer there's no answer for what they have but we have the answer in the Word of God in a relationship with Christ so we got the causes the consequences and the cure if you write notes let me encourage you to do that I'm going to give you a little acrostic tonight on the answer or the cure for anxiety and it's something that you can use the rest of your life we're going to take the little word fear f.e.a.r and just help you with that but let me give you a definition we'll have a word of benefit you know what we'll do yeah give you the definition will read our scripture have a word of Prayer and then we'll begin to look at the causes of anxiety if you have your Bibles with you tonight let's hold on for a minute put your finger in Philippians chapter 4 if you got your Bibles that I've waive them up there back and forth all right that's great hey we've got the answer right here I mean you can go all over the world and spend thousands of dollars on all kinds of counseling and in God's Word we have the answer oh by the way I brought a little something tonight that I do when I counsel um I started this it was actually the first time I had ever dealt with someone in the in the area of homosexuality and I did this was back in the early 90s and I had no idea that day what I was going to do when I was speaking to that person that had tendencies in that area I knew the Bible had the answer but I didn't know where to turn I had never experienced that before that day we prayed for wisdom in that in that office and the Lord began to give me things I wish I could tell you everything about what like shared but one of the things I did that day was I wrote a circle and a pie and I put down in that pie I put down different words I put on school friends job hobbies Church God relationship and then I put down the sexual sin and I said to the young man I say hey let me ask you a question I asked him first of all do you believe that you were born that way and he said no I know I wasn't and and I said you believe he could have victory and he said that's why I'm here pastor seller I want I want to see victory then I did one thing I said let me ask you a question do you believe your sexual sin your sexual addiction is one part of your life or do you believe this little compartment and you're in here to get help on how to deal with that little bit right there or do you believe that that has affected every area of your life that your sexual sin has affected your school relationships your job your Abhi's your walk with God everything is affected by that I think you probably already know what the right answer is because I will tell you this if anyone can compartmentalize their sin they will never see victory over it you have got to be able to say no that's affecting every area of my life that young man said that that day by the way we saw a great victory in through the power of the word of God we saw a great victory in his life but I have found this to be true that with just a sexual addiction in any area of your life so we come to the area of anxiety worry fret fears and if you think yeah yeah you know I I got this little area in my life it's worry and you know I've just been a worrier and I and I Fred some and I get anxious I get stressed out but it's just like one part of my life I'm really looking forward to what you're going to say tonight brother gentler because I've struggled a little bit with worry before so this is going to be a help to me let me tell you something within one week it dis bestest will not do anything for you it won't not until you realize you know what my anxiety is ruining my my marriage it's affecting every area of my life until you're ready to deal with something completely my friend you'll never have victory over it tonight if you go and they'll be good to get your little message you know I worried a little bit and it's a little part of my life that I'd like to change it's not going to happen until you realize you know what now this isn't one little compartment of my life that I need to get right it's affecting every area of my life and because of that I see relationships I see my walk with the Lord everything is affected by that I think I think again that's what camp does I think camp gets young people off and they can really focus on their God and begin to really evaluate their life those were great testimonies tonight they hooked it to something that they had heard that they go you know what I got a deal with this in my life that's the spirit you need to come into the night service if you think oh yeah this would be good tonight a little answer to anxiety tonight yeah I got a little problem with that it's not going to happen but if you say you know God I need help tonight this has affected my walk with you I fret I worry I'm anxious I'm full of care and God tonight I want to get the answer to it and the Bible's got it and we can help you tonight with that as well and again I will admit it maybe tonight you this is an area that you are not seeing defeat in take this and use it to help another brother sister in Christ maybe somebody that's lost and get with them and sit down and talk to him about it let's read Philippians chapter 4 we'll have a word of Prayer Philippians chapter 4 verse 4 rejoice in the Lord always and again I say rejoice let your moderation be known unto all man the Lord is at hand verse number sex 6 is really the text for tonight be careful be anxious for nothing but in everything by prayer and supplication with Thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God and the peace of God which passes all understanding shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus finally brethren whatsoever things are true whatsoever things are honest whatsoever things are just whatsoever things are pure what to things are lovely whatsoever things are of a good report if there be any virtue and if there be any praise everyone together last four words think on these things that was good father may we think on the right things tonight and father may we not be full of care full of fears full of anxiety I pray tonight that we have come Sunday night as pastor does every Sunday night to equip us lord I pray tonight that they will be equipped about this area of anxiety that they'll know how to attack it they'll know the causes they'll see the consequences and father tonight may they apply the cure father will give you the praise and glory tonight I think all of us need to have a responsibility to listen father sometimes even as young people it is easier to hear messages at camp that it is back in our home church but every teenager here that went to camp last week needs to make decisions this week so lord I pray that you'll help them and encourage them on their way as well may we equip our Saints I do take a moment and pray for our pastor I pray for him and mrs. Chapel that their time away would be sweet that it would be enjoyable Lord I know what my last four days were with my son in Colorado it's so encouraging to be with family I pray that Pastor will be an encouragement but he'll also be encouraged by his mom and dad and Lord just give them a special time together now Lord be with us in the area of anxiety and lord may we get something that we can use or at least help somebody else we pray these things in Jesus name and God's people said amen all right let's look at number one hmm let's get the definition first of all now I've already kind of tweaked this definition as I was taking my notes with me it's the last few days I don't know change it or not but let me just mention this to you my definition I had for anxiety was this a painful uneasiness of the mind about future uncertainty now I really do think that's a that's a good definition a painful uneasiness of the mind there's something that's disturbing the mind notice what it says in verse number seven and the peace of God which passes all understanding shall keep guard protect your hearts and minds through Christ that painful uneasiness of the mind about future uncertainty now I put the words out of your control some of the things that we deal with it you're anxious about are not out of your control however at the moment they are there's something you're going to have to deal with down the road but you may not be able to deal with it right now so it's a it's a it's a painful uneasiness of the mind about future uncertainty now we know that there's a lot of different types of anxiety let me just mention some to you and I want to tell you what we're going to be dealing with there is acute anxiety all right last night we are flying coming back and everything's going well and we hit some turbulence and when you hit that turbulence and you're at 35,000 feet I don't care who you are there is an acute anxiety that comes up and it's like whoa what's going on what's happening we landed really hard too and I had fallen asleep and when we landed whoa did I wake up I woke up with an acute anxiety it's high it's intense it happens to all of us you hear a dog bark in the night whoa what's going on you hear a noise or something and there is an immediate like fear and anxiety that's an acute one there's chronic anxiety there is a financial or a health situation that's just chronic it's always there and it just got I think tonight we're gonna be able to help you in some of those areas there's normal anxiety I would think that these young people that came up here and had they gave testimonies I would think there was a little anxiety there that's pretty normal hey I got to get up and get of a testimony I'm getting up to preach I'm getting up to seeing I would have great anxiety if I got up to sing let me tell you but a button normal anxiety there is neurotic anxiety now that and this is really interesting that's an exaggerated that is it created they're not real they're phobias that people have that are not you know maybe have a phobia or are neurotic anxiety about spiders or darkness or are claustrophobia or whatever it might be there's moderate anxiety um like you got a job interview coming up or something like that then there's high anxiety you're stressed out I think there's several things tonight that we'll be able to help deal with several of those types of anxiety let's look at number one the causes of anxiety I hope you really get these number one what is the cause of anxiety number one taking on responsibility given to God now I used to define anxiety with this but I think there's a couple other causes so I had to I had to make it as one of the causes one of the causes of anxiety is taking on responsibility that's given to God when we begin to do in our life what God should be doing in our life we will become anxious we will begin to worry because we're taking on a responsibility that the Lord said that he would do for us now this is really big the more our society becomes secular without God the more anxiety is going to be in our society because the more we push God out of our lives the more we're going to do in our lives that God should be doing in our lives now you got to get a hold of this because this is so important in this area of anxiety God takes us through a life he may put a lot of things in those lives and they're not all valleys either many times they're mountain tops they're blessings but there is one thing that the Lord is trying to - he's trying to reveal himself to us he's trying for us to see it is you Christ that we need the more we push God out of our society the more we push God out of our families the more we push God out of our lives the more anxious we're going to become because we're going to start taking on responsibilities that only God should take now I have a life verse in my life verses Isaiah 41:10 fear thou not for I am with thee be not dismayed for I am thy God I will strengthen the yay I will help thee yea I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness now notice what he says there fear thou not don't be anxious for I am with thee be not dismayed for I am thy God I will strengthen the eight I will help thee yea I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness hey give it over to me Shetler trust me Jim you're caring what you should not carry you've taken on responsibility for your life that I should be doing now I have several messages on people taking responsibility for their life because I think one of the biggest problems in our society is nobody takes responsibility but it intent recei we don't take responsibility for things we should allow God to do and then we become worrisome and we're becoming anxious because we feel I'm responsible for this and you got to trust God for that you got to give that over to God fear thou not for I am with thee Isaiah 41:10 is a great one number two cause causes of anxiety taking our responsibility give it a God number two putting your faith in the wrong object whenever you put your faith in the wrong object you are going to become anxious you're going to get worried you're going to start to have fears because you've got the wrong you don't have the fear of the Lord you got the fear of man you got the fear of things or whatever I like this I like Matthew 14 30 but when he saw the wind this is Peter walking on the water but when he saw the wind boisterous he was a rain and began to sink and he cried saying lord save me what happened with Peter he got his eyes off of the Lord the Lord says hey come come on Peter and Peter got out of the boat and Peter start walking and Peter starts walking on the water to the Lord but what happened he got his eyes on a different object he began to saw the wind and the waves and when he got his eyes on that he became fearful he became anxious he became apprehensive his mind now was very much uneasy because he had the wrong object of his faith and number three the causes of anxiety taking on responsibility given to God put in your faith in the wrong object in number three unresolved sin creating a judgment complex unresolved sin creating a judgment complex listen to psalm 32 for just a moment psalm 32 verses three through five when i kept silence my bones waxed old through my roaring all the day long for day and night thy hand was heavy upon me my moisture is turned into the drought of summer Selah and then notice what he does I acknowledge my sin unto thee in my iniquity have I not hid I said I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord and thou forgave us the iniquity of my sin Selah I believe that a lot of people are anxious I believe a lot of people have an uneasy mind because they have unresolved sin in their life and if you have that unresolved sin in your life you live with guilt all the time and you feel like God is not an offer but he's a judge and you go through your life and go like oh I know if I do this something's going to happen to me why because I've been looking at pornography well that only makes sense my friend it is this judgment complex that you begin to develop in your life because you have unresolved issues in your life you are struggling in areas and because of that you live in constant fear that God's going to judge you boy scuds go God knows what's going on and there is a conscience a constant anxiety in your life because of unresolved sin creating judgment complex you know I'm telling you there are consequences to sin whether or not anyone ever sees you or not there are consequences to sin whether or not anyone knows what's going on in your mind except for God and those consequences many times is if you have an unresolved you're holding on to a bitterness there is this constant thought I'm going to get judged and you live with constant guilt and that causes anxiety you take on responsibility that only God should have you put your faith in the wrong object and you're an unresolved sin creating a judgment complex you know again we go back to if you're not going to be willing to deal with the sin tonight you're going to continue to have anxiety because you're gonna think gods after me and he's not going to be an Abba he's not going to be a father he's going to be a judge and many of you have that kind of spiritual walk with the Lord because of on results in and that has caused anxiety okay those are the causes number two let's look at the consequences the consequences of anxiety are unbelievable but the verse I like if you have your Bibles turn to first John chapter four first John chapter four if you were to take my wedding ring off and you looked inside the band this is the verses that my wife put inside my wedding band and I love these verses in 1st John chapter 4 verse 18 it says this there is no fear in love that's a great verse there's no anxiety in love there's no apprehension there's no worry in love there is no fear in love but perfect love casteth out fear because look at this because fear hath every you did a real good job before let's try it again because fear hath what torment fear anxiety has torment I want to give you the consequences he that feareth is not made perfect in love let me give you the consequences of anxiety number one condemnation of self one of the consequences of living this uneasiness in mind this worry this threat this fear is that there is a constant condemnation of yourself oh it should have done this all this is and you condemn yourself number two there is a cowardness about witnessing the Bible says in 2nd Timothy chapter 1 verse 7 but God has not given us the spirit of fear it's interesting the word there is not phobia that is not the Greek word there it has the idea of be too timid be too coward God has not given us the spirit of fear but of power and of love and of a sound mind we see that one of the consequences of living with worry and fear is that you cannot be the witness for Christ that you ought to be if you are always in fear if you're always in worry chances are you're not witnessing much for the Lord Jesus Christ there's a condemnation of self there's a cowardness about witnessing number 3 and this is so important there is captivity and fears some of you guys are in prisons you cannot take any event in your life and not worry about it everything that comes through this filter and you are in captivity with that Psalm 38 verse 2 through 4 for thine arrows stick fast in me and thy hand presseth me sore there is no soundness in my flesh because of thine anger neither is there any rest in my bones because of my sin for my iniquities are gone over my head as a heavy burden they are too heavy for me your captive and some of you are absolutely paralyzed by your fears your anxiety your fears your worry has paralyzed you and you cannot do and by the way say it's almost like he's he's pressing a button and anytime you try to live for God he just presses the button of anxiety of fear of worry and you're like captive you're paralyzed number four I believe number four conflict with others people that live with constant anxiety have conflict with others Isaiah 57 verse 21 says this there is no peace saith by god to the wicked you are in constant conflict with other people your worry your anxiety there's no joy in your life and there's this constant conflict with others because of the fears that you live with number six or five confusion in decisions one of the best passages in all the Bible on worry is the matthew chapter 6 passage on the Sermon on the Mount Matthew 6:34 says this take therefore no thought for the morrow for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof hey you know what you can't make decisions in your life because you are locked into this this painful uneasiness of your mind of uncertainty for the future and you can't make any decisions you can't take a step of faith because you're always fearful you can't step out and what God wants and you can't make the decisions that you need to make and the last one contamination to others there's a lot of things that are contagious but one of the most contagious things I know in this world is anxiety have you ever been around an anxious person have you ever been around somebody that's stressed out it's like wow I didn't think I was stressed out but after being with them for an hour I feel like I'm less stressed out and one of the consequences to living with anxiety is you contaminate other people your worry affects everything it can destroy a vacation your fret your were your anxiety is contagious to other people and if you're always living with this it has affected others as well first Corinthians 15:33 says be not deceived evil communications corrupt good manners you're hurting other people because of your worth you say you know what tonight my worry is my problem no it's not friend your worry is your spouse's problem too your worry is your children's problems to the fret the worry and the anxiety that you carry isn't just you that's being affected by it one of the consequences of anxiety is a contamination of others so let's give to the cure and we'll be done for tonight the cure for anxiety if you have if you haven't taken any notes yet that's fine I encourage you to do one thing if you could along decide somewhere anywhere find some room put down the letters f.e.a.r fear because you've heard that you've heard the phrase before fight fire with fire we're going to fight fear with fear and I'm going to give you an F ei R on how to overcome anxiety f faith in God's word faith in God's Word out everybody now we get into the message so here it is take your Bibles and turn to Luke chapter 8 won't be long but this is the essence of tonight's message this is what it's all about this is why you come this is equipping the sames how what is the cure for anxiety okay brother Zeller you got me those consequences I'm struggling with and I could see my causes well what's the cure here it is number one faith in God's Word great passage Luke chapter 8 starting at verse 21 and he that would be jesus answered and said unto them my mother and my brethren are these which hear the word of God and do it okay here's my family my family is those that hear the word of God and do it that's what Jesus says then we go to verse 22 we're going to where I think it's all connected verse 22 now it came to pass on a certain day that he Jesus went into a ship with his disciples and he said okay go back to verse 21 my mother in my prayer are these which hear the word of God well that'd be Jesus talking here the word of God and do it and he said unto them let us go over on to the other side of the lake fear thou not for I am with thee be not dismayed for I am thy God I will strengthen you Jim I will help you Jim I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness I want to take care of you there's your promise let us go over to the other side faith in God's Word look at verse 23 into verse 22 and they launched forth but as they sailed he fell asleep and there came down a storm of wind on the lake and they were filled with water and were in jeopardy and they came to him and awoke him saying master master we perish then he arose and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water and they ceased there was a call look at verse 25 one of the greatest questions to overcome anxiety and he said unto them where is your faith where is your faith you know what your problem was disciples you put your faith in the storm instead of me if you are ever going to overcome anxiety you've got a F first of all you've got to put your faith in God's Word you've got to get a promise from God's Word for whatever you're struggling with him by the way that Philippians chapter 4 passage I'll tell you what if you came into my office for counseling and you were struggling with anxiety I would have you as one of your projects I would have you memorized Philippians 4 6 through 8 because that is what you need you need a promise from God's Word and you need to hold on to that faith in God's Word he said to those disciples where is your faith not that hey why don't you guys have any faith no no that's not what he asked them he asked him where is your faith you guys got faith but you had your faith in the wrong object you got to get your faith in the Word of God if you're ever going to cure anxiety you got to get your mind wrapped around a promise of God so whatever fear you have you find a scripture you get a promise and you put your faith in God's Word number two number two you examine the fear you examine the fear you look at your fear and you examine it you look at the thing that you're so anxious about and is it real does it exist is it legitimate that you should have that kind of anxiety over that now God did something with the people of Israel he did not do this for the city of Jericho he did this for the people of Israel when they got to Jericho he says here's what I want you to do for six days I want you to walk all the way around the city and I don't want you to say a word and on the seventh day you gonna walk around it seven times and you're not going to say a word why why did God have Israel march around for six days and look at this incredible city he wanted him to examine their fear he wanted them to see a few things number one you can't bring these walls down it's going to have to be me notice two he told them I don't want you to say anything all I want you to do is look at those walls I'm sure the first day they walked around those walls there was this I going to do this how are we going to and as they went through the week we can't do this God if those walls come down it's only going to be by you and I want you to do something if there's something that you're anxious about maybe it's financial maybe it's health I want you to examine your fear I want you to examine the thing that causes your mind to get so unease I don't care what it is I don't care if it's neurotic or whatever it is it's like it's not going to examine it it you know what we could be funny for just a moment I got a fear of spiders I want you to study spiders no no no I didn't think that's right that's a good idea I don't think that's the way to go no by the way would you hear a get my acrostic here all right what do you get two eight but I think you need to examine your fear is it really a legitimate fear worry some of you are worrying about things that don't make any sense at all there's no way that could happen but you're you're just you're you're paralyzed you're captive to those fears examine the fear Joshua chapter six verse three and tenets is this and ye shall compass the city all ye bed of war and go round about the city thus shall you do for six days and Joshua had commanded the people saying you shall not shout nor make any noise with your voice neither shall any word proceed out of your mouth until the day I bid you to shout then shall ye shout I want you to see the thing that you are so afraid about and I want you to examine it and realize one of two things one you know it's not as big as I thought it's not as real as I thought or number two only God can bring this down examine your fear put your faith in God's Word examine the fear number three now that are is the key but I am Telling You this is what believers need to do you attack the anxiety head-on you attack the anxiety head-on whatever it is that you are afraid of you go after that thing now there are three young boys probably by this time they're maybe a little bit older we have three young men in Daniel chapter 3 that handle their anxiety and their fear about being not bowing down and being thrown into the oven in an incredible way take your Bibles and turn to Daniel chapter 3 and see three young men that attack their fear head-on they come right to the front of it they are face-to-face with the most powerful person the world had ever known in human form up to that time Nebuchadnezzar they are standing in front of an individual that can take their life just like that but they attack the anxiety head-on Daniel chapter 3 look at verse 6 team Shadrach Meshach and Abednego answered and said to the king o Nebuchadnezzar I get this we are not its last time I'm going to have you say anything tonight so do it with everything you got we are not careful we are not anxious we're not fearful we are not careful to answer the dis matter we're not anxious if it be so our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace and he will deliver us out of there then hand o king but if not be it known unto thee O king that we will not serve thy God's nor worship the golden image which thou has set up this is an incredible way to approach your worry this is an incredible way to approach the uneasiness of your mind that's causing you so much pain attack it head-on these three young men says hey sir we have already decided we're not going to bow down and whatever you do to us you do to us our God is able to deliver us and they attacked the fear head-on one of my dear friends is a missionary up in Alaska his name is Lester be less Zerby has been on many a mission fields and he told me one time I've never forgotten he said no missionary will ever make it on their mission field Jim until that missionary attacks the fears of that culture the fears of living in that in that country until they attack their fears head-on and say no God called us here we are not careful about where God has called us you have got to attack your fear head-on I don't believe a young person will ever live for God until they overcome the fear of what others are going to say and they say no I am going to attack by fear head-on these three men did if you will ever overcome anxiety you have got to put your faith in God's Word you got to Zaman the fear you've got to attack your anxiety head-on and then are you request God for help you request God for help you go to God and is that not Philippians chapter 4 verse number 6 be careful for nothing don't be anxious about anything pray about everything be careful for nothing but in everything by prayer and supplication with Thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God requests God for help Philippians 4 4 through 8 that's what this is about don't be so anxious go to God Psalm 56 verse 3 what time I am afraid I will trust in thee and I absolutely love first Peter 5:7 casting all our care upon him for he careth for us you know what if there's an area in your life that
