this is how the bible reads it's psalm 146 praise  the lord praise the lord o my soul i will praise   the lord while i live i will sing praises to my  god while i have my being do not trust in princess   immortal man in whom there is no salvation  his spirit departs he returns to the earth   in that very day his thoughts perish how blessed  is he whose help is the god of jacob whose hope   is in the lord his god who made heaven and earth  and see and all that is in them who keeps faith   forever who executes justice for the oppressed  who gives food to the hungry the lord   sets the prisoners free the lord opens  the eyes of the blind the lord raises up   those who are bowed down the lord loves the  righteous the lord protects the strangers he   supports the fatherless and the widow but  he thwarts the way of the wicked the lord   will reign forever your god o zion to  all generations and what else can you say   after hearing that but praise the lord  look at your neighbor if you will and   help me since i can't reach them from where  i'm standing in tell them neighbor hallelujah   anyhow now that you got it look at  the other side and say other neighbor   in case you didn't get it it's hallelujah anyhow  you may be seated in the presence of god today will you bow with me father it is in the  mighty and matchless name of jesus christ   that i humbly approach your throne  asking you to calm the rivers in my heart   that i may preach the unadulterated truth  help me today to tell the whole truth   and nothing but the truth father i thank you for  this pastor who stands here every week faithfully   opens up your word thank you for these people  your people who receive it as nothing but the   word of god and i pray that in this time now you  will grant us great access transaction if you will   from heaven to earth for your glory and  our good we do pray in jesus name amen two roads diverged in a yellow wood and sorry i  could not travel both and be one traveler long   i stood and looked as far as i could to see  where it bent in the undergrowth i shall be   telling this with a size somewhere ages and ages  hence that two roads diverged in a wood and i   i took the one less traveled by and that has  made all the difference nearly 100 years ago   robert frost penned this epic poem the road not  taken and it captures for us the issue of life   in one phrase one line speaks to the profound  truth of life's location and geography it is this   that life simply has two roads the road you  choose makes all the difference both now and   in eternity but centuries before frost ever  picked up his pen the psalmist explained life in   similar terms in fact that is how the psalms are  structured you know psalm 1 that great invitation   to the psalter it says blessed is the man who  does not walk in the counsel of the ungodly   nor standeth in the way of sinners nor sitteth in  the seat of scoffers but his delight is in the law   of the lord and in his law doth he meditate day  and night and he will be like a tree planted by   the rivers of water that bringeth forth his fruit  and his season his belief also shall not wither   and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper the ungodly  are not so but are like the chaff which the wind   drives away therefore the wicked will not stand  in the judgment nor sinners in the congregation   of the righteous for the lord knoweth the way of  the righteous but the way of the ungodly shall   perish the psalmist is saying to us that life has  two paths one is a path of wisdom and the other   is the path of wickedness and the choice that  you make yay even today makes all the difference   in the world psalm 1 is an invitation  not to stop at psalm 1 but to continue   through the psalter because in the psalter is the  rich wisdom with which you and i need to live life   and it is as though the editor of the psalms has  strategically put someone there to invite you   and i to explore what the psalms have to say  i don't know about you but i like the psalms   the psalms do something for me they speak of  life in plain simple language the psalms help   me to confess my sin let me confess in front  of you i'm a sinner but i'm in good company because the last time i read my bible it says  all not y'all all have sinned and fallen short   of the glory of god and what do you do when you  have sinned many times i've had to turn to psalm   51 close the door of my own life and fall on my  knees and say have mercy on me god it has given   me language to frame my relationship with god  but not only that the psalmists help you and i to   use those words you know those  words you don't say in church   the words you use when someone cuts you off  on 95 when you feel like expressing yourself   but the right words can't seem to come to mind  the psalmist gives you and i biblical language to   express our frustration how do you want to speak  of your enemies when they come against you the   the psalmist uses uh shall i say profane language  speaking of his enemies lord i wish you would   dash the heads of their children  upon rocks bust their teeth out that's profane but dealing with the deepest and  truest sentiments of life the psalmist helped   you and i to understand how to relate with god  how to express our own emotions the psalms are   neatly structured to do this there are five books  and at the end of every book you find a doxology   it is to say that the bible is so wonderfully  put together it is reliable in every sense   you don't have to argue with people on a liberal  or conservative bin the bible is well put together   to help you and i understand life and so at the  end of every book you will find this at the end   of psalm 41 it says blessed be the name of the  lord psalm 72 19 the psalmist stops his pen to   say blessed be the name of the lord psalm  89 52 the psalmist starts to say blessed   be the name of the lord psalm 106 48 the end  of book 4 the psalmist stops to say blessed   be the name of the lord and at the end of psalm  150 the psalmist stops one more time just in   case you didn't get it to pause long enough to say  blessed be the name of the lord through this book   through ups and downs through lament and  repentance through praise and exhortation   at the end of every book the psalmist stops to  say blessed be the name of the lord can i stop   real fast to say that there is preaching  and teaching in that that life has books   life has seasons life has periods through which  you lament it has seasons in which you sin and   repent it has seasons through which you stop  to say hallelujah but be careful at the end   of every season of your life to pause long enough  to look up at heaven and to say blessed said   be the name of the lord oh but it gets  better we get to the end of the psalter   beginning with psalm 113 we come to the hillel  section of the psalter that's what we come now   to the end where all of the psalms are marked  with the word hallelujah when you get to the last   five of the psalms they are particularly marked  with this phrase hallelujah it is our phrase   praise the lord in hebrew it's one word hallelujah  in every language do you know that that's the same   hallelujah is the same whether you're speaking  german it's the same whether you're speaking   french it's the same if you're speaking spanish  it's the same if you're speaking hungarian it's   the same if you were in english everywhere you go  anywhere in the world the phrase is hallelujah i   can illustrate this let me tell you my brother  who's a lawyer travels internationally from time   to time he said to me last year he was in hong  kong he was walking the streets of hong kong   and that night he heard music that he thought  was praise music now he doesn't know anything   but english and he said he walked over to here  and he could hear the people chanting hallelujah   it doesn't matter wherever you go this one word  is universal because god has so fixed humanity   that you can access praise through one door hallel  hallelujah all but it gets better it gets better   here it is the word hallelujah doesn't tell us  simply to praise but it says get the subject right   of who you're praising hallelujah is a compound  word hallelu means to praise uyah is a contraction   which means yahweh he's saying that everybody is  praising somebody but everybody ain't praising   the right somebody so when you come to church you  better be careful to be sure that you're sending   your praise to the right one and his name is the  lord but i can tell you one better now listen the   name the lord even in hebrew is instructive to you  and i it is the name yahweh help me holy ghost the   name yahweh is a verb striking because typically  names are nouns they're not verbs but this name   is the verb which means to be it is stuck right  there in the present tense his name does not mean was his name does not mean  will be his name means is what is it that we learn about the character  of god that can make you say hallelujah   it is this that god always is that means when you  wake up tomorrow he's already there because he   is that means when you get to the not yet he's  in the no longer because he is that means god   is leaving where god is going because god is  praise the lord then when you get to psalm 146   all the way through psalm 150 you reach these  hallelujah psalms which begin and end with the   same phrase look at your bible there psalm  146 it says what at the beginning praise the   lord there at the end of psalm 146 what does it  say the beginning of psalm 147 what does it say   in the end of psalm 147 what does it say at the  beginning of psalm 148 what does your bible say   at the end of psalm 148 what does it say are you  starting to get the picture just take my word for   it at the beginning of psalm 149 and 150 it's  praise the lord and at the end it's praise the   lord it is to say to us that at the beginning  and end of everything of every day of every   circumstance in life there ought to be a praise  the lord on your mouth that means when you wake   up in the morning and your feet touch the floor  and god has allowed you to see one more day before   you cuss at your spouse before you yell at your  kids you ought to rare back one good time and save   that means when you get in the car to go to work  and you pull up in the parking lot even though you   don't want to see the people that are in there the  fact that you got a job before you go in there you   ought to say and when you leave at 4 30 and you  drive away and you look at it in the rear view   mirror of your car you ought to shout out when you  go to the doctor's office before they say anything   to you when you walk in there to meet the doctor  you ought to sit down calm your heart and remind   yourself that god is and say and then when you  leave the doctor's office thankful that you got   some insurance and you had a doctor to look over  you you ought to shout right there and before you   go to bed at night let the last thing that comes  off of your lips be this unto god praise the all i'm trying to tell you is this life  is to be bookended with the praise of god   that in every circumstance in every  situation wherever you find yourself   you ought to be the kind of person who can say  hallelujah anyhow i hear you asking me today   some smart aleck sitting there saying what  does that have to do with this passage   what does it take for me to be the kind of person  who can say hallelujah anyhow well i want to tell   you today that this text gives us three swift  movements i'll drop them here and give them to   you so how you and i can be the kind of person  who can declare hallelujah anyhow first of all   if you are going to be the kind of person who  can say hallelujah anyhow you have to make a   personal declaration look at how the psalmist  opens this he says in verse 1 praise the lord   they're in an imperative emphatic voice praise  the lord o my soul i will praise the lord while   i live i will sing praises to my god while i have  my being in other words there comes a time in life   when you must declare to yourself and for  yourself that you will praise the lord this   psalm starts out as a general plural exhortation  you get to the last five psalms of the bible   these are prayers and songs that were prayed  and sang by the worship leader to lead the   congregation of israel into worship but what  he does here in psalm 146 is the exact opposite   of what we normally teach worship leaders to  do he starts off with a general exhortation   telling everybody to praise the lord but quickly  in verse 1 that thing turns from everybody else   into himself and he starts to get personal in  front of everybody saying praise the lord in   other words he starts off by exhorting and lifting  the congregation y'all praise the lord with me   but somewhere between the start of verse 1 and  the end of verse two he stops looking at everybody   else saying y'all praise him with me and he  starts saying i'm gonna praise him by myself can   i preach in this house when i tell you that that  is sometimes how church goes sometimes you stand   in front of people and you're telling them stand  on your feet lift your hands worship god but then   you get it they don't really get what you got and  so you decide since y'all ain't gonna praise i'm   gonna praise him in front of you you're gonna have  to watch me while i raise my hands you're gonna   have to watch me while i do my dance you're gonna  have to watch me while i shout for joy cause maybe   you don't know how good he's been to you but when  i think about how god has lifted me when i think   about how god has rescued me forget chelsea did he  church had wear and so i'm gonna praise his name i know i know we got folk who been educated i  get it no we got folk who got a lot of money   i get it but forget your education if it ain't  led you to the lord forget your money if it's   not surrendered to the lord take it if you want  it my god owns the cattle on a thousand hills   and whenever i need filet mignon he knows  how to get it from the hill to my house listen listen listen help me lord but  what the psalmist is saying here is that there is there is a sense of urgency  attached to this our commitment to praising   god ought to be augmented by our mortality  this soul deep from the essence of his being   has a time marker attached to it he says  i'm going to praise the lord while i   live i will sing praise to  my god while i have my being   in other words your life like the bread you buy  in the grocery store has an expiration date on it and it it's people who do not fully embrace their  mortality who sit in church with their arms folded   with their chins notched up in the air  looking at everybody else like we're the   ones who came to disturb you i learned this  i learned this in a precious and personal way   i started at our church actually three years  ago starting my fourth year here in march   and i came to our church great historic  church great rich history through chicago   but had declined precipitously the average  age of the member at the church when my wife   and i got there was 65. we brought  it down to 45 just by coming at 30. your pastor will tell you great big beautiful  facility like your coleman auditorium but but   a few people in it and when i got there  part of my pastoral responsibilities   was to visit the the sick i wanted to get to  know the folk of the church and so i would go   every tuesday morning with deacon collins and  deacon taylor we would load up in their car and   we would go from nursing home to nursing home from  hospital room to hospital room and and i remember   this one sister this this pricks my heart even  as i tell you the story i remember going to visit   her she she died last year we we would sit in her  her space there at the nursing home and i would i   would go around and look at all of the pictures  from time gone by what life used to be like   and i'd be looking and i i saw that she used to  sing in the choir and she said to me reverend   what are y'all doing at the church these days she  said tell me about how things are going she said   i remember the days of old but tell me what's  going on and i would i would tell her and then   she said well reverend before you leave  can we sing one of those old songs of zion   and i'd stand there and i'd fold my arms  and we'd start singing blessed assurance   jesus is mine oh what a foretaste of glory  divine and i'd watch this convalescent woman as   tears started to stream down her cheek and  she was grateful just for some deacons and a   preacher who came to see her oh how she longed  to be in church but couldn't make it anymore   and then i remember getting in my car fighting  the tears from falling out of my own eyes   thinking about the number of ingrates i would see  on sunday morning who take for granted that they   got the ability to wake up that they can come  to church not knowing that that day is coming   when they won't be able to get there either  and they act like it's my job to pump them up   but if you know like i know it's a blessing to be  on your two feet it's a blessing to have breath   in your body and as long as you can get to church  as long as you can shout hallelujah somebody ought   to rare back and tell them thank you for how you  kept me thank you that you never left me thank you i look at people sitting on borrowed time acting  like this doesn't matter to them but this is   the story of your life and here it is i got to  move on you need to make a personal declaration   see this can't be for your mama this this this  can't be for everybody else no this has got to   become about your personal heart to the lord but  you say you say you say i'm not ready to make   a personal declaration why should i do  that here it is the reason some of you have   not been able to make this personal declaration is  because you're still dependent on the wrong people   what the psalmist is saying to us here is  that if you're going to be the kind of person   who can say hallelujah anyhow you need to make a  personal declaration but then you need to make an   intentional dissociation look at verse  3 the text says do not trust in princes   immortal man in whom there is no salvation his  spirit departs he returns to the earth and in   that very day his thoughts perish in other words  in life you've got two options for where you're   going to put your trust one is insufficient and  the other is most sufficient and if your heart is   not warm to the lord this morning it may be  because your trust is in the wrong location   why would the psalmist turn the corner at verse  3 and tell us not to do something it is because   the assumption is those of us who are not able  to declare that praise to the lord have our trust   in people rather than in god the commitment to  praise the lord requires that you dissociate your   dependency from people that you move it from the  category of human over to the place of the lord it   is not until you cease your dependency on people  that you experience the freedom to praise god why would the psalmist say to us do not put your  hope in princes then immortal man it's a marism   in the psalm in other words it simply means the  same thing it's not that princes and politicians   are any better or any worse than anybody else  it's just that they are like everybody else and you put your hope in people who you  think can help you when you're gonna need   them because they got power and money but  what you don't realize is they just like you and when they die their plans their  policies and their panaceas die with them you and i saw this yeah even last year when  critical sections of the voting rights act   things that our forefathers marched for  pleaded for sought after and now that   many of them are dead and gone those things  are now up for debate who would have thought   that the day would come so quickly in america  where that would happen it's an illustration   of this psalm don't you put your hope in no  party but you put your hope in no president   don't you put your hope in no civil rights leader  and for crying out loud don't you put your hope   in the pastor you better put your hope in the  lord god almighty because he ain't going nowhere then i need to get out of here i  didn't mean to keep you this long   but here it is you need to make a personal  declaration you need to make an intentional   dissociation and here it is you need an accurate  revelation see the problem with many christians   is that we're talking about god and language  that he ain't talked about himself in listen god has revealed himself   to us george bernard shaw said god made  us in his image and we return the favor but there are many churches that  have recreated the image of god   and are no longer dealing with an  accurate revelation of who he is   but can i tell you that within these pages  you can learn what you need to know about god   listen now to how the psalmist describes it he  says how blessed is he whose help is the god of   jacob whose hope is in the lord his god god is the  only one you can trust because he's the only one   who provides these two essential ingredients for  a successful life help and hope now this word help   how blessed is he whose help is the god of jacob  it's an interesting word to me it's a word to me   right now as i preach to you in this moment  because it's the word from genesis where god   introduces eve to adam and he says she is your  help me it's the word easer not skeezer easer it means this help in tight spaces  now i like this because i like my wife   i don't know how you feel about yours but  don't be mad at me because i like mine my wife is fine as frog hair the most amazing  woman i've ever known and i've come to discover   that this is true she can speak to me in places  that nobody else can get to me it happened in   august of last year pastor charles when our  the basement of our church flooded real bad   and actually in august i was lamenting to her  about the condition of a new floor that we had   just laid and i was wondering how in the world  after we spent all of this money to lay this   new floor would it be messing up the way that  it was and she said to me i'll never forget she   said to me laying in bed babe don't worry about  the floor they don't mean a whole lot to you but   she said the same god that provided to lay that  floor down is the same god who will fix that floor   all of a sudden when peace  like a river attendeth my way sorrows like sea billows roar whatever my lot that  woman has caused me to say it is well it is well   with my soul i relax i went on the bed i said all  right you right two months later a massive flood   hits our church wipes out the entire floor all of  a sudden it's not my responsibility to pay for it we have this thing in chicago called insurance y'all don't know how happy  i am really you don't uh god sent noah and his ark at  that moment to raise that thing   up so that we can get a new one just  in the nick of time now watch this   the board could not help me the contractor could  not soothe me i needed somebody who knew me in   a way that only she can know me to speak to me in  only a way that she could get to me she's my easer now what the bible is saying is that better than  a spouse god has a way of getting into the crooks   and nannies of your heart to soothe you where  you can be sued to scratch you where you need to   be itched to relax your heart he is help and then  he is hope but that ain't the part that shouts me   no no no the part that shouts me is  something that troubles me in my study   it is the person with which god identifies  himself how blessed is he whose help   is the god of jacob that doesn't bother you  that doesn't trouble you i mean if i were god   i would not associate myself with the name like  jacob think about it of all of the people you   could pick in all of biblical history why keep  calling yourself the god of a guy like jacob may maybe you forgot who jacob is let  me introduce you to my cousin jacob jacob came out of auntie's womb holding  his brother's heel a hill grabber a shyster   a crook a local car dealer his whole life he'd been trying to get  the one up stole his brother's birthright   tricked his father into blessing him tricked  his uncle laban out of sheep and goats he was a   crook and god loved him enough to wrestle  him down at peniel and to change his name   to israel it would be cool if god said the god of  israel but he doesn't say that he says the god of   jacob and i started looking at this thing  and i took theological issue with it   until all of a sudden my bible stopped  being a window and it became a mirror i looked at this thing and i had to say to myself  jacob ain't the last crypt that god done loved on   but i'm looking at some jacobs right up in here  i i didn't sing jacob in the mirror how is it   that god could associate with the guy like jacob i  don't know but thank god he does cause that's how   i made it this far do y'all hear what i'm saying  that's how you have made it this far some of you   have tricked people you've manipulated you've  schemed you've connived and none of us can tell   it because god has changed your nature he has  changed your name and you hear this morning not   cause you didn't used to be jacob but because  you ain't jacob no more is there anybody in   this church that can shout praise the lord because  god has been faithful in spite of my infidelity   you need a revelation of who he is so who is he  what does he have he's got out of nothing power   he not only is the help and the hope of people  like jacob but he made heaven and earth and sea   and all that is in them from sky to soil to  sea god made them all that ought to impress you   but the hebrew word which means to create jumps  out at us because you ain't never made nothing some of you some of us we lie all the time   going home preparing dinner i made  this chicken you ain't made no chicken tell the truth you ain't made no chicken you prepared chicken that was already made  you like my outfit you like my outfits i   made this you ain't made nothing you took  some thread and stitched together fabric   that was already created this this ought  to this oughta impress you because it says   something about god what did god have to  work with when he created sky sea and soil   it's what scholars call ex nihilo power out of  nothing it means that god stepped out on nothing   when the only pulpit he had was the power of his  own personality he looked at nothing he spoke to   nothing and something appeared let me play it back  you didn't get it quite the way i needed you to   god stepped out on nothing   looked at nothing spoke to nothing and something  appeared i got to do it one more time he in the beginning god created the heavens and the  earth and the earth was without form and void   and darkness was upon the face of the deep and the  spirit of god moved upon the face of the water and   god said let gardiner taylor would say this when  he said let all that was not started straining   to become god stepped out on nothing looked at  nothing spoke to nothing and something appeared   now you know i ain't just talking about the world  but i'm talking about your salvation and your life   how did you get this far god stepped down on  nothing how do you have money in the bank he   looked at nothing how do you have food to eat  he spoke to nothing and something appeared is   there anybody in this church that will praise  him with me he can do something with nothing what are you worried about my friend  what are you staying up for late at night   you ain't got to stay up god is up all night he  don't need nothing to bring you what you need let me sit down own soul is happy i got to sit  down i'm losing i'm losing my voice listen to   me when i tell you this this is part of this  accurate revelation it is not just that god   has the power but it is that he uses the  power see see it's it's decent enough if   you got somebody who can help you but  what good is it if they won't help you   the text says he keeps faith forever unlike  last night he executes justice for the oppressed he gives food to the hungry  he sets the prisoners free   he opens the eyes of the blind he raises  folk up whose hands are bowed down   he supports the fatherless and the widow this is  this is too much but but it speaks about god's   power to restore and to release he  executes justice for the oppressed   he sets the prisoners free this is this is  exilic language this this is the language   of the exile this is the language of the people  of god being set in prison but it's oxymoronic   because he executes justice for the  oppressed but then he sets prisoners free these prisoners went to jail went into  exile because they were unfaithful hear what i'm saying it's their fault that they  locked up but god sets people free who got them   own selves locked up i thought i i thought i  thought that would go a different way in my head   let me see if i could do it do it this way there's  a man named troy davis who in september of 2011   with shaky and missing evidence an incongruent  testimony from the state of georgia was   convicted for the murder of a police officer  it was troy's conviction that he did not do it   and he was so forceful in his statements that  others started to join him in pleading for pardon   the only way that troy could get released  was he needed the president to pardon him   president wasn't paying attention to choice please  so the naacp stepped in they started leading   marches to get the president's attention but troy  waited for a pardon jimmy carter got involved   reached out to the white house but still no pardon  for troy celebrities jumped on the bandwagon   it started to appear all over and they stayed  his execution three times then the fourth time   he was executed for something he  believed and he said he did not do   all of the power all of the prestige all of the  fame of those who could help him did not work   when i look at that and i look at verse 7 of  psalm 146 my heart breaks for troy because troy   waited for a pardon that never came but then i  feel real good about charlie dates and i feel   real good about the people i'm looking at because  you and i ain't got to wait for a pardon no more   and the thing is you did the crime but now god has  stepped in for you can i put it to you like this   there are others who ate it abraham waited for the  party david sang about the pardon joshua marched   around the walls of jericho for the party hosea  married that woman trying to illustrate the party   jeremiah cried for the party isaiah prophesied for  the party ruth waited for the party but here it is   in that barn in bethlehem our pardon king  is there anybody in this church today   who can raise their hands with me and who can  say hallelujah anyhow if i don't drive a big   car if i don't live in a big house i can say  hallelujah because my pardon has come through   excuse me now while i shout for joy that jesus is  my party do your mind real fast while i call his   name moses couldn't say his name david dreamed  about his name isaiah prophesied about his name   but i got a name this morning that's sweeter  than the honey and the honeycomb i got a name   this morning that wipes the tears that fall from  my face i got a name this morning that puts hope   in my heart excuse me real fast but if you ain't  too mean will you help me tell your neighbor   what his name is his name is jesus jesus an anthem  in one word jesus an oratorio in two syllables   jesus a symphony and a song somebody help me  call his name is jesus my grandmama used to say   he's bread when you're hungry water when you're  thirsty a father to the fatherless a friend when   you're lonely money in your pocket his name is  jesus but i've lived a little while and i've   learned that i can't wait for my grandma to call  his name but sometimes the burden gets so heavy   sometimes the load is too cumbersome i got to  call i got to call here's a name for myself   will you help me now call his name the  more you call it the better you'll feel   demons back up at the sound of his name  cancer dries up at the sound of his name   children come back home at the sound of his name  preachers preach at the sound of his name why   you sing at the sound of his name so help me now  one more time call his name sheila sheila she is yes so subscribe to brother
