Shalom and welcome to via ofte Israel a Hebrew phrase which means you shall love Israel we hope you'll stay with us for the next 30 minutes as our teacher dr. Baruch shares his expose Ettore teaching from the Bible dr. Baruch is the senior lecturer at the Sarah Avraham Institute based in Israel although all courses are taught in Hebrew at the Institute dr. Baruch is pleased to share this weekly address in English to find out more about our work in Israel please visit us on the web at love Israel or RG that's one word love Israel Arg now here's Peru with today's lesson the biblical language is most unique now sometimes the word that is translated perhaps in our Bible with the word book is literally a scroll and the biblical word for scroll has a unique characteristic because it's called Megillah which is rooted in the word to roll or to reveal and what we're going to find in this fifth chapter of the book of Revelation is that there is a scroll that is supposed to be open up so that truth can be revealed and this entire scroll has one purposes one purpose and that is to reveal the truth concerning the establishment of God with that said take out your Bible and look with me to the book of Revelation and chapter 5 now we left off with there being worship in the heavens and I want you to see that there's a connection between how chapter 4 ended and how chapter 5 begins because the chief characteristic of the kingdom of God is going to be worship the worship around God who is Judge I wonder how many of us when we think about God we might think of him as our Savior we might think of him as one who loved us so much that he laid down his life for us and there's a lot of other things that come into our mind when we think about God as our our God but the question is this how often do you think of God as judge remember what we spoke of a few weeks ago one of the most important things that we can ask ourselves daily is this am i pleasing to him and the truth of the matter is this that we far far short of God's expectation and why is that important well look if you would to verse 1 revelation 5 in verse 1 he says I looked on the right of the one who set upon the throne I mean in this book if you haven't noticed it previously in your study it's all about the throne of God his judgment coming into this world so John is speaking he says I looked and Pawn the right hand of the one who sit upon the throne there was a book or a scroll and it was written on the inside and out now that should call our attention to something because once again if you know the Bible well you recall that the tablets of God that contained the Ten Commandments the esaron had they broke they were also written in that same way and what do the commandments of God reveal well here's something that we don't hear too often in in churches and that is the commandments of God reveal the character of God that is to say this the commandments of God reveals how God would live if he were to become a man and that's why we see throughout the Gospels how the religious leaders they were always trying to say that Messiah sinned that is to say this he was not Immanuel God with us because he if he sinned he didn't reflect the the commandments of God that is the character of God but what I want you to see here is that there is a scroll and this scroll right here in verse one it's linked to what we see concerning the the tablets of God because in both cases we're talking about that which is supernatural and that which is supernaturally connected to the character of God because this scroll that we're going to speak about is all connected to the kingdom of God look again at verse 1 I looked on the right side or the right hand of the one who sits upon the throne and there was a scroll written both the inwardly and outwardly on both sides in other words and it was also sealed now when I think of that a scroll being sealed you know what comes into my mind the Book of Daniel because Daniel as well received a prophecy and Daniel you might recall then in chapter 10 Daniel became sick trying to figure out what the message of this prophecy was and he never was told in fact God told him to close up the scroll and to seal it because it's not for his time but the time of the end and the time of the end how we need to understand that and we've already alluded to it earlier in our study the time of the end is a transition a transition from this age to the age to come the kingdom and this book that we're going to be studying Revelation chapter 5 the scroll is going to reveal all those things that must take place and will take place in order that finally that Kingdom not only comes but it comes and is established forever and ever so we read in verse 1 that not only was it written on the inside and out but it was sealed with seven seals now these seals close it up and it kind of locks it up so it's locked up seven we're gonna see that number appears so often in the book of Revelation speaks about one of the chief characteristics of the kingdom and that is that holiness that sanctification so it's sealed verse verse two and I looked in a angel but it uses an adjective to describe this angel a powerful angel one that is unique one that is stronger apparently than your typical angel and he was was speaking in a great voice he was was commissioned to ask the question who is worthy to open up this this scroll and to loosen its seal in other words if this scroll is related to the kingdom of God and it must be open up and read and as it's read these things happen coming to be see it's very similar to what the rabbi's teach see now when you think of the kingdom of God what comes into your mind if you were a trained rabbi one of the things that might come into your mind is the second creation when you look at different passages for example in Zechariah chapter 12 and verse 1 and 2 when it speaks about Redemption it speaks of it as a recreation of the heavens and earth kind of like there's going to be a new heaven and a new earth that I hope that sounds familiar we'll talk more about that at the end of the book of Revelation so in this passage of Scripture we see that there is a depiction of a scroll and it's Olding when it's read now what are we talking about well when God created the heavens the earth when you look at the book of Genesis chapter 1 the Spirit of God was was moving over the face of the waters and God began to do something he said for example of via he or let there be light and if you go through and you look carefully you will find that God spoke 10 things and to be and it's when he spoke that these things became a reality what we see in Revelation chapter 5 is this an order for the kingdom to be a reality in this world for this transition to come the scroll has to be open and it has to be read and as these words are spoken they will be but there's a problem look again at verse 2 this this mighty angel he is Commission and he says who is worthy to open up the scroll and to loosen its seal what happens verse 3 and there was not any man any man in heaven or an earth or under the earth who could open up this this seal or even to what even to look upon it now here's the point I want us to see if it's left to man doesn't matter what man we're talking about there is no man who is worthy who merits and that's another way that we can understand this biblical word for worthy there is no one who merits no one that can be given the privilege to open up these sills to to reveal the message of this scroll so what is written there can become a reality that is to say this man left to ourselves we are utterly hopeless the kingdom of God is out of reach the throne of God will not come here we will not know justice or righteousness or truth or his plans and his purposes left to ourselves but what are we going to see here well even though there's no one in the heavens or earth or under the earth that's worthy to read and open up this seal there is one who is and who is that we're coming to that look if you would to verse 4 John he is experiencing this remember it's not the whole church that is the kingdom of heaven now this is one of the problems with with saying in Revelation chapter 4 and verse 1 the rapture took place the only one that's being mentioned here in this book is who in Chapter four now chapter five is John and those who are in the heavenly places like those for creatures like those twenty-four elders like certain unique angels but nowhere do we see the body of Messiah we're not talking about those a great multitude from every nation tribe language and tongue we don't see that in Chapter four we don't see that in the heavens in Chapter five and when John found out that there was no one no angel not even this mighty angel no one in earth no one who had died previously no one who was able to open up the seal and to to even look upon it what did he do look at verse four he says that he wept a great weeping because there was no one found not any man who was worthy to open up this book and to read it or even and this is the second time even to look upon it so man left to ourselves we are hope less verse five and it was said to me by one of the elders he says do not cry behold the lion has conquered or victorious now notice it says one of the elders we don't know which one there's 24 but because of what we're going to read and this is just speculation on my point by part I believe it could be Judah why do I say that because he reads here he says behold the lion has has been victorious this one from where from the tribe of Judah and then he says the root of David now why does he say the root of David very simple because David is synonymous with king or Kingdom so this one from the tribe of Judah this line and obviously it's speaking about Messiah sure is the root of David what does that mean he is the foundation of the kingdom and therefore he's being alluded to and it says this one will open up this scroll and he will loosen the seven seals so in this first section of verse five what I want you to see is this there is a scroll the scroll has been sealed with seven seals it is unable for man or any angel any created being to open it up it is only the line of the tribe of Judah the root of David Messiah sure only he can open it up and what that tells us is this all hope of the kingdom life all hope of of justice of righteousness of peace all of this rests upon Messiah Yeshua and if you don't know him if you have not experienced him if you're not interested in knowing him being intimate with him following him serving him then you are just like all the rest of humanity here without hope because he is the only source that can bring about this kingdom change in the world and also in your life well let's press on to verse 6 he says I looked and behold in the the in between the throne and the four creatures and between the elders there was a lamb now it's very important that we see this term lamb there are a couple different biblical words that we can use for lamb this one is always associated with the Passover lamb why is that important what it wants to tell us is this that what makes Maasai unique for us it's not just that he's the son of God but that the son of God is also the Redeemer that is he did the work of redemption why is that remember I said this term for lamb is always connected to the Passover lamb and Passover is the festival of redemption so now we see what's being built is this that there's a connection theologically biblically between the kingdom and redemption without experiencing Redemption you won't experience the kingdom a redemptive experience brings about a kingdom experience so once again verse 6 and I looked and behold it says between the throne and the the four creatures and and between the elders there was a lamb and he was standing like what he had been been slain so now it talks about the same word referring to the Passover land that was slain and it says to him was was seven horns and seven eyes now horns has to do with salvation in the scripture why do I say that well you'll recall that that some time ago I I mentioned about trumpets and there was two tripes of trumpets we see a trumpet earlier on in the book of Revelation and I made a point that when John was called up into the heavens to receive this this vision there was a trumpet sound and that trumpet was for the purpose of announcing it was like those silver trumpets that we read about in the Book of Numbers in chapter 10 but there's a second type of trumpet not one that's made from silver but one that's from the horn of a certain type of animal and these horns are known when they're made into a trumpet they are called a shofar and the word shofar comes from the Hebrew word which means to improve not just to get better but it brings about a change and improvement in light of God's plans purpose his character so here what we want to see is this there are seven horns mention and it simply talks about the salvation experience that leads to what perfection that's what salvation is going to bring about and that's why when the rapture happens and we'll see that in the next few weeks we're in the book of Revelation the rapture should be place it's going to be a horn a ram's horn not a silver type of trumpet but a ram's horn that announces it why because the ram horn speaks about what God has provided for there to be a perfect improvement in our life a kingdom change and what is that Messiah and that's why horn is being united to him in this passage so verse 6 second half and to him were seven horns and seven eyes eyes here again intelligence seven perfection he knows all things so this one who redeemed he did not do Redemption based upon some in insufficient knowledge he knew all things and finally we conclude this verse by saying that he is also what there's also the seven spirits of God and the seven spirits are being sent notice here into all the earth verse seven and and he came and he took this one Messiah sure this this lion that has been victorious from the tribe of Judah there's this root of David this land that has been slain it says in this passage that he came and he took this the scroll from the right hand of the one who sits upon the throne and when he took this this scroll what takes place verse verse eight at the middle and and they fell before the land who did the four four creatures and the twenty-four elders now what is that a depiction of worship what we see here and don't miss this is this lamb coming before the heavenly Father and taking it showing that what showing his divinity that he's unique that is why we talked about earlier that he is the preeminent one overall creation he's not created in fact collaging tells us and the book of Colossians chapter 1 it tells us that he created all things and for him all things were created and now in the same way that he was the lord of the first creation what we're revealing here is that he is key in the second creation and how do we think of the second creation Redemption so the elders fall before the lamb those four creatures fall before the lamb and it says that every man had in his hand a horn they also had that is a harp and they also had some golden bowls with them that were full of what that were full of incense now let's pause for a moment because incense is so important from a temple standpoint the incense were uniquely understood in Judaism they were offered up in the holy place not everyone could go and offer up incense just the priest who was anointed to do so on that day and there's an inherent relationship and we're going to see that here in some other places as well there's an inherent relationship between the incense offering that one up as a pleasing aroma to God and what else we'll keep reading we read about how they had these bowls that were full of incense and they are mixed with what the prayers of the saints so whatever what you see is this connection between the incense offering going up and prayers of the saints and what should that tell us it tells us that we should be real careful about how we pray because the incense offerings were supposed to be pleasing to God here's the point I want you to see if you look sometime in the Book of Leviticus it's outlined once more and the vinegar 16 but the time we find it in Leviticus chapter chapter 10 we see the two priests by the name of native and Abby who they went into the Holy of Holies this is in the days of the tabernacle and they offered a incense offering to God but you recall that it was a strange fire it was not the proper incense offering the God commanded they gave God what they wanted to give him and what was the outcome of that death and that should tell us something it should teach us it should cause us to ponder very very significantly about how we pray see in the same way that the wrong incense was rejected and brought about death when we pray inappropriately when we offer up to God prayers that are not fitting well there is a a terrible consequence that's one of the messages that we can see here look at verse 9 now this is all about once again revealing the kingdom and we're talking about the kingdom what should come into your mind worship there's that connection between the kingdom and worship so when Messiah showed the Lamb of God the line from the tribe of Judah the root of David when he comes and he begins to open up this book what happens well he begins to reveal the kingdom and what do the four creatures and what do the twenty-four elders do they begin to worship verse 9 and they sung a new song now this word new this word this adjective is an adjective that describes the kingdom in a unique way why do I say that well later on and the book of Revelation when we're talking about that final state of the kingdom of God that New Jerusalem notice it says the New Jerusalem he also says in speaking about the kingdom he says behold all things are new when we deal with the Covenant of the kingdom and if you or a follower of Messiah if you have embraced the the apsara the gospel that is known as a new covenant now even though the whole Testament the second Testament is called the New Testament or New Covenant in the actuality of the texts it's the gospel which is called the New Covenant and we read about that in Jeremiah chapter 31 so what happens here look again at verse 9 it says that they sung a new song before the Lord and this new song they said - you are worthy to receive this book or the scroll and to open it and it seals for you were slain and in your blood you have purchased you have acquired from God what well here's a purpose blood is synonymous with redemption redemption is what must take place to you and me we must be redeemed to have a kingdom hope to be part of that kingdom people and who did that Messiah so he doesn't only make it a reality for us but he is also the lord of that kingdom and he takes that scroll he begins to open up and he begins to read so the events of the kingdom will come about and what does it say well keep reading verse verse 9 it says for for you have purchased in your blood by God from every family and language and people and nation now here who's he talking about here he's talking once more about the body of believers and that's why those people who say you know after Revelation chapter 2 and 3 the churches and mentioned what it's alluded to here it's alluded to here and what's going to take place in the events that bring about the establishment of the kingdom we're gonna see especially when we move into chapter 6 the second half of chapter 6 the important role that believers will play in demonstrating their commitment to the things of God that they did not love their lives to death what did they love the kingdom of God well I'm out of time until next week when we continue on in this fifth chapter of the book of Revelation well we hope you will
