into my talent I'm ready to pursue my potential I'm ready to see what God can do through me I'm ready to get out of the boat I'm ready to walk on water I'm called I'm chosen I'm capable I'm competent I'm anointed I'm assigned I'm God's child I am a water Walker [Music] what's up everybody Darius Daniels here lead pastor of Change Church and we're about to take you into the auditorium I've changed is strengthened to become a Waterwalker u14 beginning at verse number twenty nine it's going to be on the screens so I told you to turn there but most people don't turn we press or we click or whatever you do meet me in Matthew chapter 14 verse 29 it says this everybody it says then Peter got down out of the boat I want you to pay attention there then Peter got down everybody say down Peter got down out of the boat and walked on the water and came toward Jesus but when he saw the wind everybody say saw when he saw the wind he was afraid and beginning to sink cried out lord save me and I stopped reading right there and for a few minutes for those of you who are here for the first time you liked how long did this do gonna be I came to church because somebody invited me I got a clock it's 29 minutes and 28 minutes and 58 seconds alright I want to talk from this subject in our time together everybody say don't trip come on say it again 12 o'clock say don't trip don't trip family I mentioned previously on last week we started a series of sermons from the series subject water walkers and in this series we are exploring a principle we believe the world is a world of principles God's a God of principles the Bible is a book of principles so explore exploring a principle called the principle of exceptions somebody say exception and because we don't remember sermons no one remembers a sermon I preached last week I don't remember everything I said we don't remember sermons we remember statements from sermons and so I want to give you a statement that we've been utilizing all this series to help capture the essence of this principle of exception and here it is it's on the screen for my note takers what happens with them does not dictate what happens to me I felt more loved on this side someone worked this side of the room I said what happens with them does not dictate or determine what happens with me this is the principle of exception this isn't a principle of superiority we're not saying we're better than it's a principle of different ation we're saying we're different from not better than but different from we're saying that although we may have some of the same experiences as everyone else we don't have to have the same outcome as everyone else that what happens with me is not dictated or determined by what happens with them we do not have to be limited by limitations that we don't have to be imprisoned by certain cat at certain categories and statistics we believe our God is the God of exception and we should be people who are people of exception and there will always be an exception in every area so our question is why can't it be me and so the word we've used to describe an exception is is the word water Walker those who walk on what other people drown in a water Walker water is normally on top of people but when you are a Waterwalker you are on top of what is normally on top of everybody else someone say I'm on top of it going back to school but I'm on top of it trying to figure this out but I'm on top of it raising it by myself but I'm on top of it feel like I'm about to fall apart at the seams but I got myself back together I am on top of it because I am a water Walker the stress but I'm on top of it a little busy but I'm on top of it little disappointed but I'm on top of it because I walk on what others drown in I am a water Walker and I can be the exception it's not a principle of superiority it's a principle of different ation it's not me making a judgment on other people it's me making a judgment about myself I'm not saying what you are I'm saying what I'm not I'm not built for the boat I'm not stuck in a place called safe I am a water Walker I believe in breaking rules and testing the norms and doing what other people believe cannot and should not be done because when I read my Bible my faith is rooted in a revelation of somebody who was an exception you don't die and get back but get back up but God made an exception with a man named Jesus my faith is based on an exception I believe I can be the exception and in our text our text of an actual Waterwalker in Matthew chapter number 14 today offers us some insight on something we need to overcome to be a Waterwalker this whenever you're setting a goal don't don't just don't just identify the goal anticipate the obstacles right because a person's ability to accomplish a goal is going to be tied to their ability to overcome obstacles got me so so so the text identifies something that will help us become a Waterwalker if we are able to overcome it and it's interesting and I'm gonna capture it in this statement this is what I believe the Holy Spirit wants to use this text to teach us today remember we don't remember sermons we remember statements so here's a statement here it is you cannot get to steppin if you keep tripping you can't get to step it if you keep tripping here it is because if you want to walk on water you can't trip getting out of the boat that in order to step on water there are some things you have to step over and if a person is unwilling and unable to step over some things they will never walk on some things they have the potential and the capability of walking on pastor Darris where's that in the text we read it right in Matthew chapter number 14 remember I told you to emphasize this the text says Peter got down somebody caught it already Peter got down see to understand where I'm going we can't make some assumptions about the boat these were twelve men in a boat this was not a canoe these were twelve grown men in a boat this was not a canoe we don't know a lot about the boat but in a northern nother story in the Bible the Bible says everybody was on the boat all 12 of men including Jesus which makes 13 they ran into a storm and the disciples have to go get Jesus who's asleep in another part of the boat so this was not a small boat this was a larger boat hence the writer says Peter had to get down to get out of it which means the boat was not parallel to or even with the water Peter had to get down to get out of the boat this was a high boat it wasn't a low boat so getting out of this boat requires some intentionality it required Peter being strategic he had to step over the boat so that he could step on water he would have never walked on water if he had tripped trying to get out of that boat and the enemy wants to inhibit and impede our ability to walk on water by causing us the trip getting out of the boat and I know you're looking at me strange some people bought a lying confused but if you would honestly out at your life the truth of the matter is you know sometimes the devil wasn't the one who trip you up okay I got a little realness there yes yeah it wasn't always the devil that trip you up sometimes we we you ever felt like you you tripped before you guys started there are some things Peter had to step over to step on and and I think this teaches us something about advancement and about walking on water and I just want to share a few things I believe the text subliminally suggests to us that we need to step over if we're gonna be water walkers number one I must learn how to step over opinions [Applause] opinions remember now when Peter is in the boat he's in the boat with 12 well excuse me with 11 other men and I know a little bit about the personalities of these men because the Bible reveals to us a little bit about their personalities one dude's name was Thomas he was a doubter he was a cynic he always had something negative to say about everything even after Jesus's resurrection he was like unless I see it for myself I don't believe it Thomas was in that boat ambitious James and John were in that boat so ambitious that they put their mother up to asking Jesus could they have a special place in jesus's kingdom so you mean to tell me you got all these opinionated individuals on the boat and when Peter got out of it nobody said anything you know they had opinions some of them probably expressed those opinions to one another look at Peter some of us maybe he heard some of them maybe he didn't but what if I told you is not always God that makes sure we hear what other people have to say sometimes it's the enemy could it be that the enemy wants us to hear other people's doubts so that other people's doubts about us can become our doubts about ourselves opinions opinions opinions we must be willing to step over opinions we can't assume that those in the boat were silent or supportive it means it means it means that if we're gonna walk on water we we're gonna have to be able to step over the opinion of people who helped us Rove to where we are we've been walking together doing life again see these aren't strangers opinions these are the opinions of people Peter is close to did life with eight with the Ministry with are you hearing what I'm saying and I don't know if you're aware of this but this is a pattern of all water Walker's in Scripture they all had to step over the opinions of people who matter to them there's a real famous story in the Bible about a man named David who defeated a giant named Goliath but one of the things that's often overlooked is what David had to step over in order to do that the Bible says in 1st Samuel chapter 17 verse 28 when Ilya David's oldest brother heard him speaking with the men he burned with anger at him you see that David's oldest brother burned with anger at him and said why have you come down here with whom did you lead those few sheep in the wilderness see whenever anyone minimizes your responsibility they're intimidated by your capability you're not doing anything that's nothing those no few sheep you're dealing with in the wilderness whenever someone is minimizing your responsibility they're intimidated by your capability they see something that their pride won't let them acknowledge they're intimidated by potential that their blindness won't let them see so they minimize those few sheep now watch this I know how conceited you are don't miss this and how wicked your heart is now he's calling David's heart wicked when the Scriptures teach that God says David is a man after my own heart so you have someone that David loves and values who has an opinion about his heart that is completely different than God's assessment of it he says I know how wicked your heart is and you came down here only to watch the battle when if you're familiar with what happened in this story David didn't come to watch the battle David's dad gave David some food and said take this food to your brothers who are part of the army so here he is being judged by people he's trying to feed I'm gonna say it again because I want to make sure you heard that he's being judged by he's being taught by people he's trying to feed and if you can't get over that you'll never walk on water because when you try to feed people sometimes the people you try to feed will be the ones that bite your hand and if you can't get over that it will affect you and infect you with cynicism and pessimism that won't allow you to have the optimism you need to advance in life here it is if you're gonna walk on water sometimes you're gonna have to do it without illy abs validation sometimes you have to do it without the validation of people you value yeah you got to get out anyway when they say you can't do it get out anyway when they say you're gonna fall flat on your face get out anyway when they say you're too old get out anyway when they say you made too many mistakes get out anyway when they say you don't meet the criteria you don't have the confidence you don't have the degrees you don't have the pedigree you don't have the networking you get out anyway David had to get over people his own brother who misinterpreted his motives if I'm gonna be a Waterwalker if you're gonna be a Waterwalker you have to be willing to walk on top of being misinterpreted did y'all hear what I just said oh you think you something we all supposed to be in the boat together now you're trying to get out of the boat [Applause] yeah but we grew up together you stayed at my house and I stayed at your house and now all of a sudden you want to get out of the boat why all of a sudden are you trying to get out of the boat now that's what's wrong with you you getting brand new that's why I don't like you you getting brand new but why does the loyalty mean I have to stay why are you putting all the onus of loyalty on the relationship on me why is it that I have to stay at the same level why can't you come with me to the next level you have to be willing to walk out and say you can call me what you want to but at the end of the day after you get through using all those adjectives what I want you to put down and say put Waterwalker in there to let me go to this side over here yeah I heard everything that you say it with business and Elna on there too I heard everything you said the Polish graduate in there too I heard everything that you said put healed and whole and focus in there too since you have so much to say we're blessed in there too [Applause] are you willing to have your motives misinterpreted to be judged by people you trying to help I don't have time to deal with this le Abbas judging David and jealousy is so illogical because if Ilya really objectively assesses all the circumstances just being justjust just keeping 100 David don't need him David at this point is actually working for Saul he's working for the king le abs just in the military David's working for the king how is it that Ilya thinks I'm okay that's unlike us that'll be too much how is it that Ilya thinks David is twisted when he don't have anything David won't [Applause] that's too much in this is it oh you think I'm jealous jealous let me go to this town oh you think I'm jealous jealous no big fella you don't have anything I want big fella I'm I'm sorry big can you walk on that though od do you always feel the need to stop walking and start explaining explaining things are y'all ready to this explaining this because whenever a trip on people's opinion that's ego tripping because if they are not assisting you investing in you or interceding for you what value is their opinion adding to you think about it now I want you think about that let's not just clap let's think about that if they're not investing in you assisting you or interceding praying for you what value does their opinion add to you see if they're a part of your life and they didn't add anything when they were there see this is too much right when they're out of your life you don't lose anything when they're gone every loss in the loss you got to do the math I said every loss isn't a loss you have to do the math so if all I get is the feeling of satisfaction of knowing you think highly of me I'm tripping over my own ego there has to be some criteria established in your life for which opinions will matter number two number two isolation for Peter to walk out of - excuse me to walk on water he had to be willing to leave 11 others in the boat the cost of being the exception is dealing with seasons of isolation you can't be rare without being in rare air did you hear what I said you can't be rare without being in rare air you can't be different without being different you can't be exceptional without being the exception you can't be abnormal without being abnormal and so many people want to be exceptions but don't want to be in rooms where you're the only one like you you cannot be the exception and not be at tables were you the only one like you that's why you the exception so so it means that you have to be okay being in rooms what other people are wondering why you here and you have to be confident enough in who you are that while they're wondering and whispering why are you here you're saying to yourself because I'm supposed to be cuz I pray to be here cuz I work two times as hard as you to get here right cuz whenever you the first one you the only one you can't be the first one without being the only one so if you're gonna be the first woman to do it you got to be willing to live through a season with you the only woman doing it and do it anyway if you're the first person your age to do it you got to be willing to live through a season where you in rooms and you look around and you don't see anyone your age doing it but some people some people have to have company and comfort over calling and the price for your potential is comfort the cross was not comfortable my are you here my God my God why have you forsaken me because you're calling puts you in seasons where you feel forsaken you sure you want to be a Waterwalker number 3 inadequacy inadequacy notice what Peter says before I got a step over inadequacy if I'm gonna be a Waterwalker before Peter gets out of the boat he tells Jesus he actually Jesus tell me to come so technically we're gonna talk about this when we get into faith technically Peter didn't walk on water first he walked on the word he didn't walk on water he walked on karma because when he heard Jesus say come come was confirmation of Peters capability in other words he said if you say come that mean I'm capable because you wouldn't tell me to do anything I'm not capable of doing so even if I don't see this capability the fact that you're calling me to do this must mean you're about to introduce me to a dimension of my potential that I didn't even know I had see you know you're really being stretched when you surprise yourself you walking on water and people like you walk in the water you like what yes I am welcome I want to know is there anybody in the room that's honest enough to say that God will bless you in a way where you'll surprise yourself and you gotta play it off people say you're not man you like you right I'm not mad it wasn't enough for Peter to see Jesus do it Peter had to believe he could because whether or not we walk on water is it just determinant about how you see God he's determine about how you see you and if I don't get over my inadequacy I won't try it at all oh I'll try wrong see see we don't we don't need to just deal with if I try we need to deal with how I try some people don't try right you try wrong you you you our try has doubt in it and desperation not faith and expectation see my younger son plays basketball and what I want to instill in him is when he shoot that thing I want him to shoot that thing like he believes he's gonna make it even when he miss it I'm like son let it hang I don't care if you miss it just let it hang you're not here when I'm saying you didn't hear what I said I said when he shoots it I want him to let it hang let it shoot it like you believe is going in if you missed the first three shoot the fourth on it I wanna do I have any people that your heavenly father is cultivating the confidence in you that when you try I started that but it didn't work but [Applause] inadequacy walking on waters context tests your sense of inadequacy you will wrestle at some point or whether or not this is in me I can't even tell you how many times I have to fight that off as a pastor as a pastor and dancer as a pastor how many times I have to have to fight that have to fight that when all these voices are in your head the enemy putting thoughts in your mind you've taken them as far as you can take them you have to fight that because if not you won't try the same got a step over there because if God called you to it you capable of it you hear me that is it's in you and last but not least the final thing we have to step over is unforgiveness I know I will be looking like that - what does that have to do with water walk everything and let me explain to you what I mean unforgiveness isn't is an impediment to water walking because it mixes our motives for achievement it dilutes the purity of our motives when Peter walked on water he was walking on water to get to Jesus he wasn't being brave just to be brave he's being brave to be obedient he walked on water because he felt it's safer on the sea with Jesus than it is on the boat with disciples he did it not because he was he did it because he was more afraid to stay on the boat than he was to walk on water right I think that's that's a learn a lesson for us because there are times with sometimes you got to do it not because you're afraid you got to do it because you're more afraid not to do it I'm afraid of the regret I'm gonna live with for the rest of my life if I don't try are you here family so this is what I'm forgiveness does when unforgiveness is in your heart you'll find yourself wanting to walk on water to prove to people who hurt you that it didn't stop you right so when it's time to walk on water you're like hold up a minute Jesus hold my phone put this on live right now Jesus yeah they not liking my pics but I know they on my page so put this on life I want them to see this like wait a minute you recording Jesus you record [Applause] what does it do it robs you of the very thing you need to walk on water because the text says when Peter was walking on water as long as he kept his eyes on Jesus he was able to walk but when he saw the wind he began to sink when he saw the wind he began to sink when he saw the wind he began to sink because walking on water requires more than vision it requires focus see some people have vision and that's a big picture but they don't have focus what do I need to look at right now and you don't look at it long enough to get to it see when I go get my eyes checked sometimes there's this chart they make me look at and there may be four lines on the chart and then the tech may say I want you to look at line number three now I can see all the lines that's vision but when they tell me to look at one line that's focus they're saying discipline yourself mentally so that you don't look at all the things you can't see and focus on the thing you need to see because sometimes looking at all the things you can see has you missing the thing you need to see to get to where you are and some people don't advance not because they don't have vision but they don't have focus and they don't look at a thing long enough to get to it so that they can accomplish what they've been assigned to accomplish and unforgiveness steals your focus it'll put your eyes on people that do not deserve they have not earned the right they do not qualify to take a mental space in your hard drive [Applause] focus the Bible says when of the wind you don't see wind you've never seen when you've seen the effects of wind on trees you see when on water but you don't see when because of water Walker has to feel when and not look [Applause] the wind blowing across your face is temptation to succumb to destruction look at me look at what they're saying look at me look at what they're doing look at me look at those limitations but you've got to feel the wind but keep looking at Jesus feel the wind but don't lose your focus because the wind might just be a distraction I'm intended to take your attention away from the thing you need to focus on to get to where you're trying to go you can't walk on water if you trip getting out of the boat don't trip
