so you finally went out and bought yourself a shiny new router and are wondering what to do with the old one whatever you do don't throw it out you can actually use this old router as a wi-fi access point and add more lan ports to your network it's pretty simple and i'm going to show you exactly how to do that so let's do this hey guys welcome back to the channel if this is your first time here my name is leron segev where i talk about wi-fi and gadget and tech tips and phones and how to if you're into that kind of stuff hit that subscribe button below and let's get on to today's show what we're gonna do is change the function of the old router and instead of it acting as the gateway the main hub to your entire network we're gonna change it so your old router becomes a wi-fi access point once we're done you'll be able to set up the old router in an area that has poor connectivity and it will become like a wi-fi extender since we're doing that we might as well make it a switch in other words you can plug more lan devices into it same settings no extra work so why not do it so before we get going we need to talk about ip addresses and how they work it's really simple and if you already know this but you can just skip ahead firstly each device on your own home network be it wired or wireless has a unique address which is known as an ip address it gets this ip address automatically from your main router also known as a gateway now the gateway itself obviously has got its own address something like 192 168 1.1 when every time you connect a new device it will get a different address so 192.168.1.2 if you had a phone dot 3 if you had a laptop etc etc now your gateway might be the same as mine 192 168 1.1 or it may be 192 168 0.1 or 10.0.0.1 or something else entirely so the first step is to find out what is your ip address so let's start there right now i'm connected via my lan cable it is connected to my main router i haven't changed anything at this stage what i'm going to do is i'm going to type there cmd and that's going to open up the command prompt the first thing i want to show you is a command called ipconfig so ipconfig you press enter and now that's going to show you the various ip addresses now yours is going to be different because you are connected to your router this shows you look i'm connected via the ethernet here is the address that i was given ipv4 and the address i was given is 192.168.1.186. so i have been allocated to this address i was allocated this address from the router which is the gateway 192.168.1.1 yours might be different so definitely run ipconfig and see what yours is so now that you have your new router's ip address which is the gateway address i was showing you the next thing to do is to take the old router and tell it look you're no longer in charge to do that you want to switch it off and reset it back to factory default it's usually something as simple as holding down the reset button holding it for 10 seconds and then it will get back to its default a few moments later now that it's reset wait until you see the old router's wi-fi in your wi-fi list and simply connect to it look at the bottom of your router there should be a sticker with the wi-fi password it will also have the username and the password to log into the router itself to set it up now simply open up a web browser type in the router's ip address so that you can log in if you don't know what that is simply run the ipconfig command as i showed you at the beginning and it will show you this gateway's ip remember you're only connected to this and nothing else via wi-fi all you got to do is you're going to find network and this is when you give it an address now 192 168 1.1 well that's the address of the original gateway we can't have that so we give it a different number typically it will go between 1 and 250 so i gave this one an address of 249. the default gateway i set that as the original router the one that is on the network one on two 168 1.1 and i disable dhcp i don't want this device to hand out any ip addresses that's got to be done by the main router so there'll be no conflicts so 249 is the new address of this secondary router 1.1 is the original router disabled dhcp and let's save changes and it should ask me to reboot and then let's move on to the next step so we have the main router with its original address we have now rebooted the old router and now it has its own ip address of 0.249 and that should be pretty much it so let's make sure we have internet access okay now i'm connected to my secondary router via the wi-fi as you can see here and what we're going to check is that if we have internet access let's do that next and there we go see how simple that was i have now made my secondary router the one that i was going to throw out i've made it into an access point by simply changing a couple of settings so now that we've made the old router into a wi-fi access point without changing any settings if you plug any devices into the lan port of the old router those devices will also get an internet address and that's pretty cool if you want to see more wi-fi tips and tricks check out these videos down here hit the head below to subscribe if this is your first time here give the video a thumbs up if you liked it and i'll see you in those videos let's go
