are you ready for the word if you're ready for the words you know what to do let's just say let's go deeper you can put that in the comments and all of that stuff i recognized that when i was putting together this word because i have not been preaching to you for about a month as i was on my break i realized that i was about to put a month's worth of preaching and a message and that was not going to work so i had to pare this down some and so i actually think that the singular message that i wrote might take me three weeks to do uh and so i'm not gonna try to do it all and what at once um so we'll at least we'll at least ask the lord for grace at least do the part the first part which i did not think was the first part i just really thought it was point one but i realized it's the whole message point one so i just decided let's just break it up and with god's grace and god's help if he allows me to continue preaching uh weekly and i say that not because i know anything i'm just saying that because obviously everything is the lord's will so if he allows me the opportunity will continue to unfold this in the coming days i'm going to read a scripture in a moment you know we're going to stand uh in just a moment and i'm going to have you do that but in honor of my best friend pastor caleb who is in the room uh who has been taking a much needed break um in honor of him i figured i had to tell a story um the thing is he's really good at telling stories like really really good telling stories and then we also heard a masterful storyteller last week and dr scott hagen so i know that it's going to fall short um the thing is like scott hagen dr scott hagan who was a blessing last week and then pastor caleb of course they had this ability to weave these stories into their message and i don't i don't my story is not a part of my message at all it's just a story i just figured i have to do something because um what i have is not a narrative story what i have is not one of those things where you're gonna leave like you did last week all of y'all were crying and sewing courage and all that kind of stuff um i got work to do and so because i have work to do i figured let me just start like maybe you know um some of the pastors that start with a joke it's not really a joke or whatever but it's just a little funny quick story in honor of my best friend i pastor caleb who tells amazing stories i just had to do it um so um while i was on my break um my five-year-old um my kids have been asking me for those of you um who were not here when i made the whole joke about my my hair uh appearance and all that kind of stuff i talked to y'all about how some days i dye my hair some days i don't whatever and i just figured that way if you see it black sometimes it great sometimes just know i decided to do it i didn't decide to do it that way i'm not trying to fool y'all like some tv preachers um and so because of that [Music] [Laughter] oh i got a whole lot of trouble right there um but welcome back yes savage has come back too and so um but because of that you know sometimes you know it is what it is but my kids started saying to me um why do you dye your hair and i was just kind of like you know i i just don't feel like seeing myself grey today and you know that kind of stuff and so you know every once in a while just i get up and i look in the mirror and i'm like you look too old and so i just dye my hair whatever but i haven't done for quite some time of course when you're on vacation and hanging out with your wife you don't need to do anything like that so i'm just like chilling i'm i got my hair it's gray and you know it used to be like you know salt and pepper and now it's a little more salt than pepper and you know all that kind of stuff so i'm like oh and so i'm going through all of that and so but i made peace with it i made peace with it i'm like okay i just i am what i am in my mid 40s whatever i started growing when i was 18. and so because i'm like it is what it is i'm fine it's you know whatever at least i'm not bald you know whatever so for those of you who are bald god bless you but i'm just like hey hey i'm back i'm back [Laughter] i mean if y'all could hear what's going on in here because it's a few ball people in here and so uh they're like hey hey easy now easy um so i'm like you know it it's fine but but last week my five-year-old came up to me and she just looked at me intently and she said you should dye your hair black again kids are just savage they just don't you know they'll tell you you're fat they'll tell you you're old they'll tell you no they'll tell you all sorts of stuff but she just literally came up to me and said you should dye your hair again and so if you happen to see me one day with black hair again you know i had a complex with my five-year-old i wanted to make her feel better and make myself feel better because i just i literally had just stopped feeling self-conscious and then she did that so i i won't call it the devil i'll just say hey you know it is what it is so that's my story all right um first timothy chapter one i want us to stand for the reading of the word stand for the reading of the word um it had nothing to do with my message whatsoever it just it's what they call an icebreaker so i did that in honor of my friend um first timothy chapter 1 first timothy chapter 1 verse 18 and 19. if you have not done so already maybe you're watching for the first time or uh maybe you started watching last week for the first time and um dr scott hagan didn't ask you to do it so maybe you don't know but what we what we do to honor the reading of the word of the lord is some kind of recovered an old tradition that i grew up with um that i'd let go to the wayside it's not one of those things where it's something you have to do there's no particular verse or something i can point to it's just a way of saying uh to the lord that we honor your word above all other things we honor your word above all other things and so um i want to read two verses of first timothy chapter one and we stand for the reading of the word and even though we're not physically in the building together um i ask you to do that at home as well just to say to the lord we honor you we honor you this is what the first two these two verses of first timothy chapter one say timothy my son here are my instructions for you based on the prophetic words spoken about you earlier may they help you fight well in the lord's battles cling to your faith in christ and keep your conscience clear for some people have deliberately violated their consciences as a result their faith has been shipwrecked we're going to stop right there and we're going to pray father we confess our deep need for you we recognize it without you and apart from you we are and can do nothing and so father it's in this moment that i ask you as one who serves you and loves you as your son that you'd anoint me in these next few moments to preach and declare the truth of your word and may all of us be changed as a result of the declaration and the proclamation of your word may our hearts be fertile ground the kind of ground that will return 30 60 and 100 fold that will return a harvest that this would not be a word that is stolen from us there would not be a word that the enemy takes not be a word that the cares of life choke out but it would be something that would go into the depths of our heart and produce a harvest lord you know it is my desire to make you proud to please you so i pray that the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart will be acceptable in thy sight o lord my strength and my redeemer and because you are so gracious because you are so merciful and because you are so kind lord i do pray that you would reveal jesus to those who have yet to come to the saving knowledge of who jesus is in this moment and in the future moments that they may be watching this would you by the power of your spirit compel the lost worshiper to come home save people in jesus name i pray amen you can be seated you can be seated i um had to tell a funny story because i recognized immediately the level of of seriousness by which i needed to communicate the the word of the lord today i had what i believed was a really encouraging part but that's actually the part that i think i probably won't get to i recognized that the last time i spoke to you from this platform i had a 10-point message that i gave you 1.2 uh and i know that i have not given you uh the other nine although if you're on the prayer call you heard several more uh if you're on a prayer call that particular week we gave several more however i know that the lord has reserved that for another time and so i'm not going to necessarily pick right up on that i was joking with some of my friends about being at a service a new year's eve service where a pastor was preaching actually pastor caleb was there too we were in canada uh and a pastor was preaching and um when when midnight came he had gotten to point one and midnight came and it was like okay happy new year and the pyrotechnics went off and all that kind of stuff and the balloons and all that stuff happened and then as soon as all that one stuff went to the floor he calmly said number two and just started like that like new year's had not even happened and so i figured i can't five weeks later all right number two i figure i can't do that and so um but i am following the leading of the holy spirit uh in this and i believe that the lord has uh something for us to really grab a hold of um and i was away um i did quite a bit of thinking um that that's the great thing um part of part of getting away um when you are a father and and like my wife father and mother uh five wonderful amazing spirit-filled anointed gregorious loud children it's hard to think about about weighty things and lofty things for a long period of time you have to try to and find your moments to steal away and the holy spirit is so gracious uh to really compact those moments so where where it used to take hours to hear um he is gracious to give us uh moments of hearing in minutes when we live in a noisier environment and i'm grateful that we've learned how to train our ear to hear him quicker and so because of that um you know i've been able to press in and hear him quicker but when you have time to think you begin to think about more lofty things and and begin to think about uh bigger ideas and things of that nature and so i had been doing some thinking about what the holy spirit had been saying to us just really over the summer i could really talk about what he's been saying to us over the last 19 20 months has been significant i could talk about what he's been saying to us for the balance of this year leading into the summer but i was just actually just thinking about uh the providence and the love of god to speak to us the things that he's spoken to us just in the summer alone um kind of recounting that that we kind of came into the summer out of our are talking about koinonia and the lord is not finished with that uh he just wants to pick it up at another time because it's important it's going to be an important value for us as a family but coming out of that he began to speak to us about rest which is absolutely necessary and many of us are are learning how to practice that not only uh for our souls and in a spiritual way but also even in a natural way and have taken the opportunity to do that um so he began to talk to us about rest and then of course um as i just alluded to earlier i began talking about expectation which i know pastor jerry also picked up on and then pastor jason as well and then coming back and talking about running the race the right way and then even last week um so many of us were deeply encouraged to know that in god for those who love the lord that no year is wasted that he even uses the sojourning seasons of our life and that he doesn't just give us the field but he gives us the yield and so we we saw these things and god has been speaking to us something really amazing uh and encouraging and strengthening uh over the summer and and i i gotta tell you that that after last week it would have been really really great to come back with a narrative preaching because it was so masterful to take those four verses and really uh go into the story i'm really jealous of people like dr scott hagin and bishop jakes and and pastor caleb and some of these others that can just take a story and read the story and make you feel like you're in the story and all that kind of stuff he didn't give me that kind of thrust and so that's why i had to tell you a story at the beginning so you'd actually be okay with everything else i'm getting ready to say on my time of rest i did a lot of thinking about what's going on in the world now i will tell you this i really did rest i rested well like this is the best rest i had ever gotten in a certain period of time so when i tell you i did all this thinking and stuff like that you know i'm not going to tell you that like i went up to the mountaintop and i i can't i have more gray hair because i came down the mountain like moses because of the glory and stuff like that my wife and i really did rest um but i did do quite a bit of thinking as well and and i was thinking about um and and i needed to do this for the sake of my soul to be honest it's more than what i can explain to you but but i was thinking about what's going on in the world and i was thinking about what's going on in the church while pressing into the heart of god about our times i had to do that i did have fun on vacation but i need to think about those things for the sake of my soul because i needed some clarity to be able to reconcile what we all see even if we have varying uh levels of understanding about what we're seeing um there are things that the lord has spoken to us there are things that the lord has spoken through us that don't necessarily look like what he's spoken and so as a result sometimes the soul can become discouraged and disillusioned and so i really did want to spend some time kind of praying about that overarching thing i recognize that that may not necessarily be where a lot of you are but i'm just kind of working this portion out for you so that you can understand how we're getting to where we're getting to after nearly a year of prophetic preaching about the nature and the potential of the season we're in the balance of the year 2021 has been necessarily pastoral in teaching we've had to do that we've had to to give us a level of grounding and we need it because of what surrounds us the truth of the matter is we were preconditioned by prognosticators both in the natural and those who claim to have heard from god for this season to be a sprint instead of a marathon and and because they preconditioned us uh for this season be a sprint instead of a marathon um we did not know that this season would require endurance and as a result of not teaching people how to endure and not teaching people how to be faithful and not actually giving a prophetically accurate picture of the season that we're in the result of that is that many have fallen away or are drifting when it comes to the faith now this is an unfortunate reality it's one of the things that i said to us on the prayer call earlier this week we should not have or i even said it's impossible to have a compassionless gospel at times we we um find ourselves um in certain circles talking about falling away gleefully because we look at it like okay well this had to happen for this other thing that i really want to happen to show up so forget about them but the truth of the matter is we should never take that gleefully because another statement that was made as we'll circle back around to the idea of the lost worshiper at some point because that's something that we really need to allow to sink deep in our heart that pastor jason brought up but there is a reality there is no such thing as a presence people who don't long for more people to be in his presence so so there there are realities that that are happening and we do see uh as a result of of kind of this lack of endurance and a number of other things that have taken place there is been a falling away or a drifting when it comes to the faith now now pondering these things uh while also thinking about you deeper i wonder to be honest if it were even necessary to address what's happening around us to the faithful core um i really did ponder that there are times you need to know that we wrestle with with what we sense prophetically for the earth but then how much of that we need to be telling to you all the time since you do respond to it so for example we preach repentance repentance repentance repentance you're like okay i have and we're like i know but you don't graduate from pensions it's a posture it's a lifestyle it's a you know whatever but you're like okay but is there anything else and i get it i really do i really do and so there are times when when you when you're sensing certain things in the earth you're you're seeing certain things in the earth you begin to say okay well well is this is this what i'm sensing for the earth because the part of my assignment globally even though i i am a local pastor i have a global assignment and so i have to try to to marry these things sometimes but i do recognize that there are certain things uh that are realities that exist for all you see there is spiritual warfare going on at all times but seemingly heightened in this moment in history and we must be able to cling to the faith we must be able to cling to the faith there is another reality and that is that storms come to everyone everyone goes through storms knowing that it's happening or why it's happening does not exempt you from what is happening the prophets who prophesied about things like exile went into exile too they weren't exempt from the exile they went into exile too when elijah prophesied about drought he experienced drought too even though god took care of him god took care of him for sure but the truth of the matter is there was still drought in the land and he had to walk through that so knowing what's happening doesn't exempt you from what is happening so there is a reality let me let me help you with with some things here there are 168 hours in a week if you go to church once a week at most you are spending between one and three hours in the community of believers of the 168 hours that there are the truth of the matter is and i say one to three hours because we're one of the churches that goes against the culture meanwhile we have a lot of churches that are trying their best to figure out how to condense the time and become shorter and and stuff like that and some churches their whole service is shorter than my speaking time and so but but the truth of the matter is you know we have a lot of people say well yeah well people are busy and they have a lot to do and you know we don't want to be an intrusion into the life and stuff like that and i i kind of understand that um but at the same time i also recognize that that we are literally talking about taking one hour out of the 168 that people have in a week and we're expecting that they're going to grow spiritually and then we're saying we'll put the onus on them at home well the truth of the matter is given the stats of bible reading for some the truth of the matter is the one to three hours that they're getting in church a week is all they're getting of the 744 hours in a 31 day month an average person is going to church 1.3 times a month the average church attendee then spends just 3.9 of the 744 hours a month in church i'm going somewhere stay with me for just a moment couple that with little to no prayer and little to no bible reading for the average person who says they're a christian and you see that there is an issue and this was before a global pandemic for those of us who are faithful weekly watchers of this stream we spend approximately 10 hours together of the 744 hours in a 31 day month and we are seeing a generational drift in falling away i'm gonna explain that to us in just a moment um i just read a study i sent it to a couple of people um fewer than 10 of generation z youth say they're committed to reading the bible fewer than 10 according to a survey that was a part of a newly released report by the american bible society researchers polled individuals as young as 15 a split generation between generation z youth age 15 to 17 and separated from generation z adults age 18 to 24. and they found that in that 15 to 17 year old uh demographic that nine percent were classified as scripturally engaged which means centered on reading the bible now i'm gonna explain that to you in just a moment because you're gonna be even more shocked by comparison 14 of generation z adults were considered to be scripturally engaged and 23 of millennials were classified as scripturally engaged additionally 47 of gen z youth were labeled as bible disengaged half of all american adults qualify as a bible user today half but but if you are qualified as a bible user listen to this that is someone who uses the bible at least three or four times a year now we would be fooling ourselves if we thought of this as a youth problem it is not a youth problem what we are seeing generationally is a shift but it's not just a youth problem there is an issue family there there is a significant drifting away that is happening around the body at least in this nation now now several important statements were made by pastor jason a couple of weeks back that i want to revisit i want to revisit them um i'm not skipping over what dr scott hagan said because it was an absolute blessing and i believe it that many of you need to watch it again and again but i want to go back to the narrative that god is speaking specifically to this house for just a moment specifically to people who have an ear to hear the messaging that comes out of this house i need us to hear some things for just a moment um in a real uh pastoral way i need us to to hear this um this was a statement that pastor jason made that i want us to embrace i want us to get this maybe maybe write it on your heart more than write it on your your pad if you don't cling to jesus you will drift away from jesus if you don't cling to jesus you will drift away from jesus if you don't cling to jesus if you don't cling to him you will drift away as i pondered this i was reminded of the hymn the more my gray hairs come in the more i remember old songs i know that i have a lot of young folks young watchers you have no idea this song whatsoever it's okay i got an old soul in the room though could probably go with me the the hymn was in times like these in times like these some of you may know it some of you may not um i'm not going to sing it for you it'll take up my time i almost had clay playing on an organ just to give you a nostalgia um in times like these you need a savior in times like these you need an anchor be very sure be very sure your anchor holds and grips the solid rock this rock is jesus yes he's the one this rock is jesus the only one be very sure be very sure your anchor holds and grips the solid rock went on to say in times like these you need the bible in times like these o be not idle be very sure be very sure your anchor holds and grips the solid rock this rock is jesus yes he's the one this rock is jesus the only one be sure be very sure your anchor holds and grips the solid rock i'll just for sake of posterity i'll give you the last one in times like these i have a savior thank you jesus times like these i have an anchor i'm very sure i'm very sure my anchor holds and grips the solid rock this rock is jesus yes he's the one this rock is jesus the only one be very sure be very sure your anchor holds and grips the solid rock interestingly enough also you can you you there with me you don't know that one vaguely okay interestingly enough the combination hear me i know i'm in a very long intro but it's gonna matter to you the combination of deception and complacency selfishness and lack of empathy have caused people to not even to be able to recognize that we are even in it in times like these moments this song was written by ruth k jones who wrote it awakened to the reality of being surrounded by calamity and resulting spiritual drift while contemplating the world around her and contemplating the passage of scripture in second timothy chapter three which is what caused her to write it both the circumstances of the world surrounding her and then also the passage of scripture in second timothy chapter three now the timing of the writing of this song hear me um was in world war ii looking around over 400 000 u.s soldiers died in world war ii so calamity war grief confusion and lack of a moral compass and biblical insight take their toll on any society and usually cause spiritual drift and so in that writing a song about not drifting she says in times like this we need a savior we need an anchor be sure be very sure your anchor holds and grips the solid rock which is christ contemplating that along with the passage of scripture in second timothy chapter 3 verse 1 which says this paul writes to timothy and he says these words you should know this timothy that in the last days there will be very difficult times for people will love only themselves and their money they will be boastful and proud scoffing at god disobedient to their parents and ungrateful they will consider nothing sacred they will be unloving and unforgiving they will slander others they will have no self-control they will be cruel and hate what is good they will betray their friends be reckless be puffed up with pride and love pleasure rather than god they will act religious but they will reject the power that could make them godly stay away from people like that this was the impetus for penning the song in times like these now it says in the last days there will be very difficult times i want to help you really quickly just parenthetically insert this what are the last days because we have whole industries built on this so let me just help you the last days just so you know when you read the scripture you don't have to try to look for bible clues and codes and all sorts of missing things the last days are simply the days between the ascension of christ and the return of christ what are the last days the last days are the days between the ascension of christ and the return of christ meaning that every generation since the ascension of christ has been in the last days i just want to help some of y'all so that way you don't have to try to i'm going to leave that alone almost gotten out trouble holy spirit put a guard on my mouth don't you do it what was true when paul wrote that to timothy was true with ruth k jones when she wrote that song and it's true this very moment in fact we could say it's more true although that's not a true statement because truth is truth so what we are really saying is that the reality is closer every day we live is closer to the return of christ than the day before so tomorrow is closer to the return of christ than today and the next day is closer to the return of christ than that day which means we are always in the last days i hope that helps you but we don't seem to understand it and we don't live with the knowledge or the urgency of the last days in our hearts and minds so we don't think that we are in and in times like these moment in world war ii 400 000 u.s soldiers lost their lives in the last 18 months of the pandemic which i know you don't want to hear about and every preacher wants to move on more people i know you don't want to hear it but you need to more people have lost their lives in the last 18 months to covet in our country than in world war one world war ii the korean war the vietnam war 911 and the war on terror combined in 18 months that comes with another word that is trauma and all of us are living through a collective trauma and most therapists will tell you that it's not the best thing to try to ignore trauma the truth of the matter is at some point it's going to manifest somehow and possibly it's manifesting as drifting we've tried to ignore trauma and and move on and get back to a sense of normalcy even in the church and i get it i don't want to be doing this stuff i'd rather see you i don't want to be preaching to a camera and a couple of close friends in the room i'd rather see you i'd rather have our hands lifted i'd rather not be messed up i'd rather not have to be having debates over vaccines i'd rather not having to be reading stories about pastors who have lost members in the church i'd rather not be consoling pastors who have lost dozens of members in their church i'd rather not be going through it just like you i'd rather go out and do all the stuff that everybody does even though some of y'all do it anyway it's okay i get it i really do i do and we just want the world to be better that's like everybody wants that we just want the world to be better but in a literal mic drop moment pastor jason also said something a couple weeks ago that needs to be repeated again and again and again this world is not going to get better without christ now i recognize that that's not a shout rah-rah moment you're like okay can we go back to dr scott hagen can you go back on vacation we don't like this at all i i get it sorry i'm back the world isn't going to get better without christ you're like where's the hope in this message there is but we got to deal with some things because we're not gonna we're not going to putting our head in the sand is probably one of the worst prophetic postures you can have how can you see we need to see some things um we he he went on to make this statement we don't evangelize the world as passionately or actively because subconsciously some believers think that the world is just going to get better the the the submission or the idea was this the reason why you don't preach the gospel is because you don't think you need to because you think that somehow or another is just going to get better people are just going to get better people are just going to act better the government's just going to get better they're just going to get their act together if you are waiting on the world to get better without jesus go back to the bible that's why we are seemingly shocked by what appears to be the rapid deterioration of the world and the systems of the world like governmental and economic systems when they fail we're shocked when stuff happens we're shocked we're like how how could this happen how how in the world could this happen how could this economic system collapse how could this happen over here and happen over there why why because you assume that the world is getting better this ideology i know this is the world's longest intro but the truth of the matter is i had to do this because i knew i wasn't gonna finish the whole thing i'm gonna set it up over week so i gotta help you this leads to professed christians people who say they're believers looking for transformational politicians and policies and they will never say this out loud or even agree with it when it's said but they're essentially looking for an additional savior what we are actually saying when we think that the world is going to get better is that somebody other than jesus is going to raise up and save us from this it's an indictment to our understanding of the scripture there is another school of thought that attempts to impose the rule of the kingdom i won't call it by name so i can stay out of blogosphere but there there is another school of thought that intends to to attempt to impose the rule of the kingdom as an attempt to make the world better so they believe that we can just make everybody conform to the rule of the kingdom that won't make the world better because family the kingdom is not imposed it's revealed and it is access the kingdom of god is accessed by willful submission to the cross of christ not as an imposition that's a whole line of teaching that we may do at some other time that we understand the gospel of the kingdom the blessings of the kingdom are available to the citizens of the kingdom but those blessings are not in the form of materialistic things i know that's gonna mess with a whole lot of people too because you're like well i'm a king's kid i'm a kingdom kid so i should have it all what you can have is righteousness peace and joy in the holy ghost this is the kingdom of god the kingdom is not a matter of eating and drinking but of righteousness peace and joy in the holy spirit that's what romans 14 17 tells us and for those who aren't anchored the truth of the matter is there's a mass spiritual drifting that is taking place and the rise of false doctrine as i said before pastor jason made the statement i have not been able to let it go if you don't cling to jesus you will drift away from jesus so paul intro over addresses timothy he says timothy my son here are my instructions for you based on the prophetic words spoken about you earlier may they help you fight well in the lord's battles cling here's that word again to your faith in christ and keep your conscience clear for some have deliberately violated their consciences as a result their faith has been shipwrecked now we may not recognize it by reading this passage on the surface especially in the way that is rendered in the english language particularly in the new living translation but this passage is a passage of militaristic overtones you don't necessarily feel that way or that tone in the nlt but you'll see in a moment why i read the nlt but the esv says it this way this charge i trust to you i'm in verse 18 of chapter one in the esv first timothy discharge i trust you timothy my child in accordance with the prophecies previously made about you that by them you may wage the good warfare it is spiritual warfare in the opening verses of first timothy chapter 1 paul writes to timothy to tell him why he left him there in ephesus to continue the much-needed work of stopping those whose teaching was contrary to the truth that's why he left timothy in ephesus and so how was he to fight this is important that i i thought i was going to give you these points and give you a whole bunch of stuff but i'm understanding now that i'm only going to get one of these three and that's okay i'm fine with it because i knew that coming into it so i planned that way how was he to fight and in this verse we see three different things one remember the prophecy spoken about him which allows him to wage war that also speaks of expectation two cling to the faith or don't let go of the faith in christ and three keep his conscience clear one remember the prophecy spoken about him two cling to the faith and three keep his conscience clear not doing so causes people to shipwreck their faith now let's be clear that the intent of the enemy behind drifting is for you to be shipwrecked the intent of the enemy behind drifting is for you to be shipwrecked which is a faith that is shattered and broken into pieces no longer able to get you anywhere and specifically not able to get you home you may be watching me right now drifting you don't know that you're drifting you you think you're okay because you're watching but the truth of the matter is you're watching but you're not praying you're watching but you're not reading the word you're watching but you're not fellowshipping you're watching but you're not thinking about the things of god you're watching but your life is filled with a whole lot of other things you're watching but you're struggling you're watching but you're drowning and that kind of thing there is hope for you you don't have to stay here but i want to encourage you remember the prophecies spoken over your life cling to the faith and keep your conscience clear this is how we wage war because not doing so causes people to shipwreck their faith and the goal of the enemy in this moment is to cause all of those who are drifting to eventually be shipwrecked there is some significant warfare going on this season i recognize that that part of our declarations are our teaching our prophetic uh uh words and things of that nature have caused us to get an overarching sense of what god is doing in the earth but at the same time the enemy is lurking in the shadows trying his best to mess with things and certainly mess with the church and i think part of the issue that we have right now is that we have so many who are at least probably recognizing that there's some sort of spiritual warfare but the enemy has them all twisted and turned around thinking that the warfare is something that is not and so therefore you have a lot of people who who are acting like they're standing bold and their eyes off the ball altogether and so we're missing what's actually happening the enemy has seduced people into ignoring their conscience i told you three things here i'm only going to deal with one today i'm going to deal with the last few months that we have with our conscience it's a big deal i know we don't look at it like a big deal but the scripture says that violating your conscience ignoring your conscience causes people to make shipwreck of their faith so the enemy has seduced people into ignoring their conscience get you to reject your conscience your moral compass that innate god-given ability to know right from wrong and the result of this is drifting falling away and false doctrine and false teachers being given audience by those who say to their believers in jesus what should be happening when we are hit with false doctrine and false teachers is it should be rejected but now it's celebrated in the public square because many people have violated their conscience shipwrecked faith which can be the result of pushing away the conscious can cause you to live unrighteously and ungodly constantly weakening your faith leading to either teaching or being susceptible to believing false doctrine and paul goes on in verse 20 to give two examples of this hymenius and alexander are two examples he said i threw them out and handed them over to satan so they might learn not to blaspheme god so let's deal with the conscience for a moment the overarching word over the number of weeks here really deals with what god is doing in the earth and making sure that our anchor holds to the solid rock it's more important that most of us realize because of the sources of drifting away from christ so let's define the contents for a moment the conscience is the inner sense of right and wrong simple definition the conscience is the inner sense of right and wrong conscience is not taught it doesn't come from education society or environment we are born with the conscience which is the inner sense of right and wrong it is why toddlers and children lie because we are born with a conscience they know what is right and wrong and the moment that they recognize that there are consequences for doing wrong they lie to avoid them you know the day when precious little johnny and precious little susie who can never do wrong lies directly to your face and acts like you're supposed to believe it you ask them did they eat the cookie and the cookies in their hand with a bite and they look you dead in your face and say no it is because they are born we are born with a conscience we are born with the innate ability to know the difference between right and wrong romans 2. let's look at romans 2 real quick romans chapter 2 we're gonna get somewhere romans chapter two i hope you're getting something romans chapter two some one person said something so the rest of y'all [Music] romans chapter 2 verse 12 romans chapter 2 verse 12 have work to do we have work to do family because something's happening in earth verse 12 romans chapter 2 verse 12 says this when the gentiles sin they will be destroyed even though they had they never had god's written law and the jews who do have god's law will be judged by that law when they fail to obey it for merely listening to the law doesn't make us right with god it is obeying the law that makes us right in his sight even gentiles who do not have god's written law for it wasn't given to them as the amplified says show that they know this law when they instinctively obey it even without having heard it they demonstrate that god's law is written in their hearts for their own conscience and thoughts either accuse them or tell them they are doing right are you saying this that the law itself even though they had never heard it before they had the innate ability because they were born to know the difference between right and wrong their conscience tells them even if they don't know the law family when people sin they are aware that they're sinning even if they don't know that they're sinning i know it's hard for you to understand hard for you to embrace initially but the more you violate your conscience the less you know i'll get to that in just a moment and this is the message i proclaim that the day is coming when god through christ jesus will judge everyone's secret life what is a secret life it is what you did with your conscience the secret life for which you will be judged is not what you heard it's what you knew and avoided and so there is coming a day where all of creation will stand before god without excuse because even if they've never read it they knew it while it can't be taught it can be both developed and affected and what i mean by affected is more specifically defiled conscience can be healthy and unhealthy depending on how we live before and respond to god righteous living i know you don't know where i'm going yet but stay with me righteous living produces and nurtures a healthy conscience unrighteous living defiles and pollutes the conscience i say it again righteous living produces and nurtures a healthy conscience unrighteous and ungodly living defiles or pollutes the conscience when the conscience is violated when we do wrong it is the thing that causes us to feel remorse and regret and guilt which is what leads us to repent god gives it to us so that when we do wrong our conscience affects us that's the thing that causes us to feel remorse or guilt or regret and that's a thing by his love that leads us to repent when we repent this is what happens and ask god for forgiveness he forgives our sin by cleansing us and removes our guilt from where family the he removes our guilt from the conscious this is what the bible says in hebrews chapter 9 verse 13 and 14 under the old system hebrews chapter 9 13 14 under the old system the blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer could cleanse people's bodies from ceremonial impurity just think how much more the blood of christ will purify what our consciences from sinful deeds so that we can worship the living god he purifies our conscience so that we can worship him because if he didn't purify your conscience you would never lift your hands if he didn't purify your conscience tears would never roll down your face if he didn't purify your conscience you would never believe that you could approach god because prior to the cleansing of the conscience we had a guilt consciousness that's why people were afraid to approach god and you still have people this is what the enemy is trying to do to cause you to live with a guilty conscience or even more than that to sear it all together so that you don't have one at all for by the power of the eternal spirit christ offered himself to god as a perfect sacrifice for our sins the blood of christ's family makes our consciences clean allowing us to worship him and spirit in truth how can you wish mistreated in truth because you know you're not guilty it would not be truth if you were guilty while doing it he cleanses your conscience so that he doesn't remember your guilt and neither do you hebrews 10 goes on to say that as well verse 19 through 22 and so dear brothers and sisters we can boldly enter heaven's most holy place because of the blood of jesus by his death jesus opened a new in life giving way through the curtain into the most holy place and since we have a great high priest who rules over god's house let us go right in to the presence of god with sincere hearts fully trusting him for our guilty consciences have been sprinkled with christ's blood to make us clean and our bodies have been washed with pure water you say pastor what like you went on vacation to come back and say this i went on vacation because i needed a vacation god wants us to hear something he does this work in our conscience we establish that however when we violate our conscience which is to ignore the pricking and the nagging and the pull to do what's right our conscience becomes hardened known as a calloused heart one that is dulled to righteousness this causes you to have less of a sensitivity to what is right and righteous and soon causes you to lose the compass of the conscience this is what happens when you see some people who no longer seem to care about sin you ever like let's just be in modern culture for a second you ever been on instagram and like somebody post something you're like like that didn't bother you when that happened or somebody do something and they're like i'm fine it's cool i'm good me and god have an understanding he knows what's up you know all that kind of stuff that we say and you're you're like and then and then and then those who have the audacity to have a conscience are now called church people and deep saints and all other sorts of names now are there judging people among the crowd for sure there are i'm not saying that everybody who has something to say is right but the truth of the matter is some people just have a conscience oh it got quiet in this church perhaps when people no longer seem to care about sin it's because to them it no longer feels like sin because they've lost the confidence of the conscience hear me family every time you violate your conscience you're dulling your heart every time you violate your conscience you are dulling your heart what was god doing and saying to us for a year repent what is repentance it is the turning of adult heart it is the turning of a hardened heart back to god that is why god has been saying to the earth hey i'm trying to get your attention because your heart is dull i'm trying to get your attention because your heart is hard i'm trying to get your attention because you're violating your conscience and those who continue to violate their conscience are going to drift and by drifting they are making a shipwreck of their faith now let me make it make sense to you the goal of societal redefinition of right and wrong is ultimately the hardening of the heart against the things of god now let me help you we are in a culture right now and i have to to navigate this nuance um very carefully with the help of the holy spirit we're in a culture right now in which when certain things happen a bunch of other things run in and attach themselves to it because the enemy wants redefinition so what happens is for example a simple term like being awakened otherwise known as woke begins to become co-opted and now under the banner of that we start to see a societal redefinition so now it's not just about cultural things it's about uh identity things and it's about uh all sorts of other things and all these things happen and the truth of the matter is as these things begin to unfold what is happening right now is that there is a societal redefinition that literally what is happening in society right now is that we are being told to choose what side you're going to be on for example are you on a biological side or are you on a emotional side or whatever it may be and so what's happening is lines are being drawn right now and people are being invited into the violation of their conscience and what is the point of the enemy and societal redefinition the ultimate hardening of the heart against the things of god the world is constantly teaching generations to violate their conscience this is not new this is why things cannot go unopposed specifically and contextually let me help you understand what exactly cannot go unopposed by the church false doctrine this is very important because we have a lot of pastors who feel like they can scream in a microphone to a tv or a social media platform to the world but the truth of the matter is what you are ignoring is what is happening to the house so we allow the rise of false doctrine and contextually the reason why timothy was to fight the warfare was not against the world timothy was left in ephesus to confront false teachers who are polluting the truth the destructive nature of false doctrine is that it polluted the truth to those who were awakened by the spirit to truth so now those who know the truth are questioning what it is false doctrine pollutes the message of the truth coming from the church uh ah i wish i could get you to get this i'm the with the help of the spirit we will um here the reality is we are in a world that needs the truth of the gospel we are in a world that needs the hope that is in us but because we are allowing it to be polluted they don't know what to believe coming out of us okay the pursuit of things pollutes the message um we just prayed for afghanistan i'm not necessarily sure that your understanding of the gospel giving us things here on earth works over there just not sure the pursuit of power pollutes the message winning at all costs over loving at all costs pollutes the message and all of it dulls the conscience and hardens the heart if that's happening to believers imagine what's happening to the world let me help begin to land the plane of scripture says that the conscience convicts us of sin john 8 verse 9 new king james version says this way then those who heard it being convicted by their conscience went out one by one beginning with the oldest to even the last and jesus was left alone and the woman was standing in the midst what happened in the context of the scripture the woman who was caught in the act of adultery was brought in front of jesus and they're like jesus she was caught in the very act of adultery what what is she you know what's supposed to happen and they're waiting on him to join the mob and stone the woman and the bible says that jesus doesn't say anything he stoops down to the ground and he begins to write and then he says these words but he who is without sin be the first one to cast a stone and contextually then those who heard it being convicted by their conscience went out one by one beginning with the oldest because they had the most stuff in their conscience the conscience convicts you of sin um the conscience bears witness to what is right initially even if a person doesn't know the law as we saw in romans chapter two the conscience confirms the feelings and actions of a person we see this in romans chapter nine it causes you to live and speak either free and clear or burdened according to second corinthians chapter 1 verse 12 a healthy conscience comes from being cleansed by the blood as we saw in hebrews chapter 9 verse 14. it comes from serving god as we see in first timothy chapter 1 verse 3. it comes from holding fast to the faith and tending to your conscience why because the conscience can be defiled first timothy 4 1-2 tells us that it can be seared which is literally burnt off you have it no more it can be made impure by unbelief according to titus chapter 1 verse 15. you're like i'm not writing down all these scriptures but thank god we have you too the conscience is not just a passing idea in scripture there are several kinds of conscious mentioned in scripture there's a good conscience which is clean pure and healthy there's a conscience that's void of offense there's a weak conscience there's a pure conscience there's a seared conscience there's a defiled conscience you can play i'm really going to land the plane very very very soon like i could see the airport and everything i'm not in the cloud still when i read to us the opening passage and i talked about these three things that paul addressed timothy see when i started this my entire point was actually somewhere else this was one of the points but there was so much here that it was like i'm not going to rush to this i need to understand something i started this because the language of this in the english doesn't necessarily give us the picture of what's actually happening and the truth of the matter is when we begin to talk about drifting and falling away we tend to think about others we tend to think about them and we don't recognize family that the enemy of your soul is after you and everything every day is literally about getting you to violate your your conscience so your heart will become dull and hard so that when the next transitional season comes and there is one you'll be on the outside looking in with a shipwrecked faith because literally you weren't able to get through this season intact he invited you somewhere along the way to violate your conscience and your heart became dull and you don't now know why you were once a presence person that can't feel its presence you don't know why it's so difficult for you to pray you don't know why it's so difficult for you to read his word you don't know why you don't want to hang out with the christian friends anymore you don't know why you're not in quarantine you're actually in isolation you don't know why you no longer want to go back to church people by the hundreds and thousands and millions who are done with church now because of the violation of their conscience when the lord is asking you come away with me come pray he wakes you up in the morning before your clock and that's him standing there and you turn over because you no longer have a desire for him it is a violation of your conscience and you don't recognize that your heart is becoming dull because the truth of the matter is the way this particular passage is rendered in the greek as it relates to the violation of the conscience is actually physically deliberately pushing it away the english doesn't say it that way to us but the way that the original writing renders for us is that people who are violently pushing it away saying i don't want to be nagged by god i'm tired i'm tired of this season i'm tired of the way it feels i don't need it like i thought i needed it i don't want it like i used to want it and so when he invites you to pray you don't when he invites you to fast you don't when he invites you to read his word you don't when he invites you to worship you don't when he invites you to serve you don't and your reasoning is not even a pandemic because most of the things i said are individual pastors [Music] of churches across this nation [Music] are beginning to wrestle with the potential standing in front of them while talking about revival on one hand preparing for a post-christian nation on the other because we have not understood the insidious nature of how the enemy is trying to draw you away and get you to violate your conscience because in so doing he knows on the other side of that you make a shipwreck of your faith and so drifting which means not going anywhere on purpose not heading anywhere just being carried by the circumstances of life the goal is to get you not to be anchored to the rock which is jesus but to crash against the rocks of life and destroy your vehicle [Music] it's not difficult to understand that we're in a tumultuous season but in a tumultuous season what you need is an anchor when the waves are crashing what you need is an anchor to cling to christ because if you're not clinging to christ you will drift i'll never forget being in a church [Music] where i heard a pastor make a provocative statement and at the time i was like i was younger i didn't necessarily know if i even agreed with it at the time but i've seen it play out over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again unfortunately he made the statement he said if you don't pray you will commit adultery and i'm like how in the world can you make a provocative statement like that what he was saying is if you don't claim to christ you will drift i mean it was a provocative statement at the moment but the truth of the matter is what he was saying if you don't claim to christ you're liable to do anything if you don't cling to christ you're liable to go anywhere if you don't cling to christ you're liable to be influenced by anything and so literally we are living in a society right now where the church is protesting the wrong stuff an enemy is having a field day siphoning off numbers of people who he hopes will never be able to make it back because they have nothing to make it back on because they're shipwrecked somehow or another we keep thinking and if we just endure it long enough everyone's just gonna come back not if we don't help people understand you are living in a society right now where the enemy has set you up to begin to agree with stuff that you know violates your confidence [Music] because you want to be accepted because you don't want to be an outlier because you don't know how to explain it because you don't want to offend anybody because you want everybody to be happy with you because you want everything to be okay and so you silence your own conscience and you don't know that what you are doing is dulling your heart to the things of god and we say we want to be passionate about him while not being anchored to him so one commentary put it this way conscience can be put away and faith can be shipwrecked put away the greek word means to push away with force it is a willful and deliberate pushing away of conscience conscious says that something is wrong and should not be done but conscience is ignored and subdued and turned away and denied when a person continues to push his conscience away something terrible happens his faith the shipwrecked his faith is broken to pieces and destroyed a person must live as scripture dictates righteously and godly if he does not live rightfully and godly then he weakens his faith and soon dashes it upon the storms of evil worldliness and false doctrine his faith is shipwrecked because he pushed his conscience aside refusing to listen to its call and live righteously and godly why does the enemy want us to deliberately violate our conscience so that he can cause our faith to be shipwrecked now this was supposed to be point one and i was supposed to pivot [Music] and my pivot that i'll pick up on not this week is that shipwrecked faith causes us to misinterpret what is happening around us and get us off mission see the whole part was supposed to come next because for a lot of us we we misinterpret what is happening in us because the truth of the matter is we keep expecting the world to get better but this world is not a home disillusionment frustration impatience trying to cope altering reality with drugs and alcohol sorrow and depression all of those we preach about trying to help you get better but we're missing it what they are is signs of homesickness we're missing the signs these are the signs of homesickness these are the signs that tell us that this world is not our home and then we look at god and we look at the circumstances of the world and we say god how come you won't do something about it and make it better and he's like i came myself [Music] to give you a road map to home and we keep wanting him to change this to make it better for us to stay when he said it's better that i go i can prepare places for you we can't get there or even see it family with a shipwrecked faith because of the violation of our content so [Music] i had to tell a funny story at the beginning because the truth of the matter is we're not in a funny season and i know that this is counter to what you'll probably see on youtube and and facebook and instagram as you scroll right after the service is over and people are giving you helpful things about how to cope with today and i'm also giving you a helpful thing about how to cope but it's not a happy thing the truth of the matter is if we don't if we don't understand what is happening [Music] under the surface we'll start drifting and so many of our friends and our loved ones are living in this space and they don't know how they're there let me tell you how you've made a shipwreck of your faith you started drifting because you stopped allowing god to speak to you through your conscience and you stopped responding to him and every day you did it you added another dull layer to your heart and that dull layer after a while when untended to and unrepented for becomes a hard place a place that you no longer give him access to a place that is cut off from god and we wonder why we are where we are in this nation and why we are where we are in the world because we still have i gotta stop uh a doll-hearted church who's still trying to figure out if they can outlast god because one of the soul works that i did on my trip away i was thinking about the passage of scripture [Music] where david i believe it's first samuel 21 um maybe second san francisco i'm not sure but um it's in chapter 21. um there's a drought in the land and the bible says year after year after year the drought persisted in the land and it wasn't until that third year that david asks god what is he doing second samuel 21 wasn't until the third year so that drought lasted year after year after year which means that the first two years they were just trying to navigate it it wasn't until the third year they decided to ask god what are you doing and my concern is that we have adult heart at church who still has not decided yet god what are you doing how long do you have to be in your circumstance before you turn to god and say what is it that you're trying to do to get my attention or will you continue to allow layers of no to god to continue to build and create a callous on your heart my intention for this moment for you family who are believers is to pray that you don't continue to stay in a place where you violate your conscience but instead if you found yourself in a dressing drifting place you say god purify my conscience purify me i turn to you so that you can cleanse my guilty conscience i i stop rejecting you because family you may not know it because you look at drifting as somebody who is so far from god in your mind that you're fine because you're on the stream or you're fine because you're on the prayer call you can be on a stream right now and you can be on the prayer call every single day and still be drifting because in your private moments when god is speaking to you you are pushing him away and at the end of the day what the enemy is trying to do is to use that moment to keep you drifting because his goal is not for you to drift his goal is for your faith to be shipwrecked and there are moments when it's like okay we end on a high note we end on an encouraging note you know how you're going to end on a high note when you respond to god when you respond to god and you you stop rejecting him you're going to find that your life is going to end on a high note better than this message the messages in a serious place but the truth of the matter is god's inviting us to be anchored in this season i mean anchored always when i'm when i'm talking about this season what i'm essentially referring to is that it's clear that we are still in a tumultuous moment it's clear that we're still in a difficult moment it's clear that we're still in difficulties i know we want to wish it away and we want it to all go away and everything to go back to normal but i need you to know that in the midst of all of this the devil is having a playground with people siphoning them off left and right and i know that we spent quite a bit of time praying for the drifter [Music] it's hard to pray for the drifter when you're drifting i don't want you to be so in this moment we come in a grounding moment to say hey in march of 2020 god said may i have your attention now on august 15th of 2021 he says to you again may i have your attention may i have your attention [Music] some of you are drifting this is not a moment where you put that in the chat and all that kind of stuff this is the moment between you and god i want to pray for you father i know that there's more that you want to say but in this moment this is all i have the time for so i pray that by the power of your holy spirit would you get past the dull in the hard places break open these hearts so that not one who is watching whether live or later will be lost lord i pray let these people be shipwrecked lord i pray that these would not be people who would deliberately violate the conscience the lord i ask you that by the power of your holy spirit you would make your way clear again your promptings clear again your voice clear again that we would obey then we would respond [Music] that we would not be a statistic father i ask you that you would not allow the enemy to run roughshod over this generation because we know that your intent is still revival we know that your intent is still a great awakening we know that your intent is at the lost come home we know that your intent is that the lost worshiper come home father i pray purify your church purify your church purify your people purify our hearts and we would not be a people who would reject you but instead would run to you i ask you this in jesus name amen there are some prayers i can pray for you but there's some prayers i cannot pray for you perhaps when the stream is over you will find a moment before god to say lord purify me my conscience make me sensitive to your promptings at all times make me sensitive in every one of us family we have choices this morning i set my clock to wake up and spend time with god he said his clock too it was an hour and a half before mine and i had a choice turn over and wait for my alarm or respond to him and i'm only giving you this simple example because sometimes it's that simple not doing so is a violation of my own conscience when we're invited to say something about something and we don't it's a violation of our conscience train your conscience to be healthy by obeying god now there are others who are watching me right now and you're like i can't believe i watched this preacher preach this long like what am i doing i don't i don't even that's not you that's the lord who is literally speaking to you right now saying you know that you need him and you've been trying to convince yourself that you don't you've been trying to convince yourself that you can make yourself right without him you've been trying to convince yourself that everything's just going to work out and be all right but yet you find yourself in repetitive cycles some of you in cycles where you are using external coping mechanisms what you're trying to do is find him and it's not satisfying you and so you want to get out of this cycle and right now you know that what i'm saying is right others of you you may not have necessarily been in a repetitive cycle with a coping mechanism but you are in a repetitive cycle of flirting with salvation or not because you're not sure you want to live so straight and narrow right now you kind of want to go out and have some more fun and do your deal but your conscience keeps telling you this is what's right and you need to surrender right now the truth of the matter is every strain we reiterate the scriptures that speak to us about the hope of the gospel and i'll give you one it's probably one you may have heard maybe you've never heard it maybe you're in an oppressive nation and you haven't had the opportunity to watch something like this i'll give you this john chapter 3 verse 16. it says for god so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whosoever believes in him would not perish but have everlasting life god did not send his son into the world to condemn the world but that through him the world might be saved jesus christ came to the world not to condemn you but to save you and even before now he was letting you know of his reality by giving you the ability to know the difference between right and wrong and now you're at a moment where you know this is right and i believe that the spirit of god the holy spirit of god is literally working on many hearts right now around the world and around this nation that don't even really need me to say much more because something is happening in you that says i know that this is right i know that i need god and if that's you right now make a public declaration that literally what that does that it puts a stake in the ground it says this moment right here i'm not going to allow my fears my doubts to any of my soul to have me any longer i'm not going to continue putting this off assuming that i'll have another time because another time becomes another dull layer to your heart another place where your heart gets hardened but no you're at a moment right now we're saying this is it i'm not playing around anymore i i have to do it and that's you put a stake in the ground just by saying i need him i need him you can put that in the chat but in the chat i need him him is christ i need jesus i need jesus you can say him you can say i need jesus just be bold about it i need jesus i need jesus i need jesus i know that i do i don't know everything but i do know this i need him i need him i need jesus put in the chat put it in the chat men don't save you he does by putting in the chat what you're doing at your ear he sees your heart he sees your heart he sees what you're saying he's coming to you right now right now you may not know what to do or what to say i see one of you literally you're sitting in front of a computer screen and tears rolling down your face because you're like i don't know why i'm even crying but i know i need jesus just put it in there put it in there you don't have to drift anymore he's there for you i'm literally creating moments for those of you who are being awakened by him to respond to him if you're being awakened by him respond to him that's a miracle that is happening when a heart heart responds when a dead heart responds that's a miracle that's a miracle respond to him [Music] now you may not know what to do or say at this moment i want to pray with you just want to give you language you're saved by faith it's the grace of god to save you through faith it's a [Music] response to what god has done first a lot of times you don't have the language so we try to help you with the language for the first time but prayer is really just talking to god honestly and openly so pray with me if you don't know what to say you can pray after me whatever you do don't let this moment pass you say father in the name of jesus i come to you [Music] just as i am i [Music] acknowledge that i'm a sinner i've done a lot of wrong in my life but today i turn away from that and i turn to you i pray that you forgive me of my sins and cleanse my conscience make me pure i believe jesus that you are the son of god that you live died and rose again for the sins of the world including mine and today because of faith in you i believe that i have new life and today i vow with your help that i will live for you and serve you for the rest of my life in jesus name amen family
