hey everyone welcome back in this video I wanted to run over a variety of ways that you can start organizing your projects when it comes to unscripted documentary style content this is a project uh for us that is currently in production and we have filmed about nine days eight or nine days so far uh but I'm just going to bring in one of the days and you can see we've got uh three cameras and a audio Source simply to begin we're in the media page of D Vinci resolve and I'm just going to set up a bin called footage and then another one called timelines and simply I'll just bring in all of the audio and the three cameras into the footage bin you can see it's already brought in the proxies and that's because in the finder menu I've already generated proxies using Blackmagic proxy generator it's a standalone plug-in which you can simply add a watch folder and then it will go ahead and automatically generate proxies uh for all of your Source footage the proxies sit right next to the source footage and then the proxy folder is in there and it's rendered off based on the uh type of codec that you've chosen so that was all generated earlier and then when you bring it into D Vinci it automatically links that proxy with the source footage so if we head over to the media page now the first step is obviously syncing the audio with video there are a few ways to do this the the way I like to work is to create what's called a time of day sync now under timelines I can simply create a new timeline and this is just going to be the date of production to 24056 this is maua and this is a to sync which is a time of day sync and then in the audio Source what I can do is hit enter to bring this up in my source and you can see the duration is 4:30 but the starting time code is 83211 in the morning so I'm going to begin my timeline with the starting time code of the first audio recording so if we go back to timelines we can update that time code in the settings so starting time code 3211 so now we have a timeline that is the starting time code of the audio source so what I'll do is just simply right click and drop these in to the timeline using time code over on the footage we can then bring in this footage using time code because all of the footage was shot using time code during the day all I need to do initially is right click and update the time code from the audio track that's the first camera second camera we're going to do exactly the same thing update time code from audio track third camera exactly the same thing so now what we want to do is just quickly confirm that interview content is updated ated correctly so if we bring this into our source monitor we can see here in the source Monitor and the time code slate 1130 4212 and that matches perfectly to the time code on file we'll do that for the other Clips just to confirm that the time code matches all I'm doing is hitting enter to bring it up in Source 121 19439 that's all correct so now what I can do is actually deselect the audio track and in uh the media pool right click and insert selected Clips to timeline using time code and that's dropped in those clips there on top of the audio in my time of day sync going to do the exact same thing here to confirm that time code is correct this is actually a little off we are two frames off so I'm going to change the clip attributes of this clip by hitting shift a bring up my time code and I'm going to change the current frame to 18 to match the Slate now if I hit okay that's updated that metadata on file now I can drop that into the timeline just as previous I'll just raise the tracks here and then drop this in and that will drop underneath feel proud about it and you feel very great now we just have the last camera I'm going to do the exact same thing and just confirm that that time code is correct so for the interviews I'll just raise this once more and drop these in using time code now to stay organized what I like to do is separate the a roll and b roll out from each other so under a004 I'm just going to call this a roll and then I'll create another folder called b roll but now all of these clips except the interview are going to be dragged into this Boll folder and this is a roll so for my a roll I've put that into the timeline already and then I'm going to go into b roll and just select all this right click insert using time code you can see that all of these clips have been added into the timeline I do like to just quickly go through and watch through a few clips and just obviously confirm that the sync is correct it's nice to find obvious um spikes in the audio in this case the golf swing just to confirm the hits correct great so that to me looks really good now I have my time of T sync uh all set out this is a timeline that can literally just sit there now I can go over to my timelines by hitting F and I can do a few things from this point I can create subclips which will help me um break this down into different section so you can simply just drag this over into your Source monitor if you don't have the Dual plane view up you can do that and I can just view these full screen so now what I can do is actually create in andout points on my timeline and these in andout points are mirroring on the source monitor here so if I drag the source through you can see that these In-N-Out points have been created on the time of day sync and I can use the shortcut command option s if I have my source monitor selected and this will create a subclip using those in out points it's technically just creating a new timeline but we're calling it subclip so instead of time of day sync I'm going to call this interview one subclip create and that has created if I open this up in the timeline you can see a new timeline simply just with those parameters I'm going to go ahead and open this up in Timeline again and do the exact same for the next two short interviews so again in my Source monitor command option s this is going to be interview 2 and then this will be interview three so I've got my three interviews you can start editing from this point but I like to go one step further and actually create a multicam sync for the cameras so to do this I can select all of them hit P for shortcut of compound clip you could also right click and choose new compound clip going to hit enter and this has created a compound clip of the three cameras the compound clip has been added into the media pool and I can simply in the media pool right click and convert that compound clip to a multicam clip now what I have in my source view I can choose multicam and I can see I have three sync cameras in my multicam clip that is synced with the audio underneath if I select all of these and hit command option L these will link together so now if I choose my Global Link this is treated as one single clip the beauty of this is that I have all of my audio sources available visually um it just allows me flexibility to see what's going on in all the different tracks while having a nice compact compressed multicam clip as I watch through it's up to you or we can get helping them through that you're also supporting our grandchildren as they start their you can see that that's all nice and synced one thing to note when you're creating compound Clips converting them to multicam and embedding them back into the timeline is the multicam doesn't inherit the source media time code you can see in the audio sources we've actually got 11454 which is time of day whereas this multicam clip here is showing 1428 and that just means 14 minutes through the timeline one thing I do like about this technique is using subclips from the original time of day sync is it has inherited the original time of day time code so this interview even though we've extracted it out of that wider sync this timeline still shows 11:42 1407 so this is the exact time of day that it was filmed now to organize our interview footage one step further we could do a few things we could use this timeline and simply start editing within this timeline I'll show you really quick what that could look like I'll just delete empty tracks for now head up into the timeline and I'm going to duplicate this timeline and just name it interview one breakdown so to break down this interview I'm using a subtractive technique which is simply just looking for gaps and things I don't want to include and I'm just removing them do you want to go first Peter oh we're lucky that our family one great thing about multicam is I can quickly come in here and just right click and switch the camera angle to something else where I can see both of them in the frame angle three here both our sons and our grandchildren live in the town that actually a really nice laugh can do things like color that clip we play golf of this go you a lot with the dog so you was the boys so you can see that you can quite quickly start working through a interview extracting or subtracting the portions that you know will definitely not feature in the final edit and you'll start to compress the interview down into usable sections this is quite a broad brushstroke approach initially just to clean up all the fluff and end up with say a 15 to 20 minute interview string out rather than having a 45 minute interview with all of the pieces that you know you'll never use the beauty of using a timeline is that you can use clip color markers and obviously the most powerful way is to hit M which is marker and actually add in notes throughout so as I add a note I could say this is great and then as I'm going through my next clip I could mark this family background you know love for golf so let's now take this one step further Let's Pretend I've gone through the whole timeline and this is my interview breakdown along with a variety of markers so I've imported manually markers that will help guide me in terms of my editing process but now what I can do is I can actually go in and transcribe this entire breakdown just by clicking this icon up here eventually we'll use Ai and go through and transcribe the entire clip for us you will get a transcription window which looks a little like this so I've got my breakdown which is the interview like a really broad brush stroke of cutting all the fluff out of the interview but I want to go one step further and start forming a consider story from the interview so what we've got is an empty timeline and we've actually got the original breakdown loaded into the source window with the transcript now what I can do is go through and read the transcript and when I find a moment that I want to include in the timeline I can just select it so we retired 15 years ago lived in M wake since then we're very involved with the golf club I like that sentence and so I'm going to click this button here and drop it into the timeline it's going to drop it into the timeline and I can continue down and read through this transcript once I find a section I'm just going to highlight it and drop it in again all right so let's just pretend that I've gone through the whole interview and isolated sections that I really want to start building a timeline with I've dropped them all in as subclips and now in my comp I have a timeline here I can select all of them and hit shift p which will decompose those clips to reveal the original audio now I have a really great starting point for an edit in terms of my timeline one thing you will notice is it's still got the time of day time code which we don't need anymore because the clips don't correspond to that time code anymore so I'm just going to choose starting time code and just zero that out so a minute 20 of selected clips from my interview breakdown that I can start listening to and start editing with this is obviously just one way of working and there are so many different ways of working and organizing your footage based on your needs and based on the wider extent of a project the key thing to take away is to have a consistency with the way that you work within one project and obviously if I'm ingesting 9 10 12 15 days of content with similar footage interviews and b-roll I want to have a consistent folder structure and a consistency to the logic of how I'm breaking down interviews and categorizing them for the edit from here you can go so deep into pulling different themes out or sync pulls um which we'll talk about in future videos what I can do because this will start getting quite bloated as a file structure is create a new folder and these can just be my compound clips multic Cam and then I can drop all my multic cams in there and then just have my breakdowns in the higher folder structure but for now we'll finish the video there I hope that's giv you a few thoughts and a few uh techniques that you could Implement in your next video If you like this video please
