[Music] coming up next we'll address the question can do cover letters matter and then what the great resignation actually is all about and of course we're gonna take your calls don't move it all starts right now [Music] all right welcome to the ken coleman show we're coming to you live from our ramsey solutions studios in nashville we're thrilled to have you because this is a conversation you've joined about you specifically your purpose we're talking about what you were born to do you know there's an answer to that question why am i here what should i do with my life what was i born to do there's an answer to that question i assure you and i think for many many many many many millions of people it is an intimidating question to try to answer and so we're trying to take the intimidation away we're trying to take the frustration away the confusion away by giving you a clear path seven stages not just that will allow you to answer that question which is stage one get clear but also help you get qualified to do what it is you wanna do to help you get connected to get opportunities to do what it is you were born to do to help you get started doing moving on the path to do what you were born to do to get promoted so that you can actually do what you were born to do to get that dream job doing what you were born to do and then one more stage to give yourself away because now we go from stage six get the dream job to stage seven where we're doing the work we've accomplished what we set out to accomplish and we are doing what we love but now we realize and i don't mean realizes it oh i didn't know but i mean we realize like it becomes real that we are giving ourselves away we are working for legacy and impact eight four four seven four seven two five seven seven is the phone number to jump in eight four four seven four seven two five seven seven we'll get to the phones shortly remember this you can change your name change your location change your occupation uh whatever you need to do to make sure that you feel comfortable sharing and being vulnerable and transparent so that we can give you the guidance that you need email ask 844-747-2577 coleman.com and via our social media channels at ken coleman on instagram uh ken coleman show on facebook and that is this ken do cover letters matter now it is still a pretty tried and true practice for companies to require cover letters i'm not a fan of cover letters because here's what i know the data shows that hiring managers are spending an average of 7.4 seconds actually looking at your resume so good heavens how much are they spending on the cover letter the answer zero it's just a formality so in my resume guide which is free at kincombo.com i tell you look you don't need a cover letter based on the way we do our resume you can go check that resource out it's free we show you how to flip your resume give you the headings to exactly what to do it's a fantastic guide very practical hundreds and hundreds of thousands of people downloaded it but when a company requires it of course we don't want you to get thrown to the trash we don't want you to get disqualified from the interview process because you didn't do a cover letter so if you got to do one do one but do they matter that much and here's the heart of that question should i stress out and write the perfect cover letter don't stress out doesn't have to be perfect they're barely looking at it so if you spell it correctly and you punctuate it correctly and it's not a distraction the answer is it doesn't matter if they require it do it do it well do not stress out over it nobody cares now if you want to get creative and put some real fun stuff into it to grab attention great but to stress out over a cover letter and act like the cover letter to your resume matters a whole bunch that is misguided now we have an article at kencoleman.com on how to write a cover letter so you can go check that out it's an easy read it's going to give you some practical stuff but but does the cover letter matter a great deal no it does not no it does not so don't stress about it eight four four seven four seven two five seven to youtube for this kind of stuff there are a lot of people out here and youtube is becoming arguably the biggest search engine in the world so you subscribing you sharing you liking helps us grow we are growing thank you for that but please help us spread the word eight four four seven four seven two five seven is the number let's go to shawna who joins us now in murfreesboro a neighboring community here in the nashville area shawna you're on the ken coleman show hey ken thank you so much for taking my call you bet sean i am living the dream what are you doing good give me a drink as much as possible okay good what's going on i read um thank you so much for what you do you i recently found you on youtube and it's been really great too you know just learn everything that you guys talk about so my question today is that i've been a stay-at-home mom for the last three years i am just started the baby steps in the ramsey program and um currently not don't have an income other than my partner's income and he is uh we're just not quite on the same page yet i i think we'll get there but i basically want to go back into the work field so that i can start you know knocking out our debt and he prefers me to stay at home and so we're not in agreement on that um which is kind of making me think maybe i want to move out but basically like i i used to do marketing in property management and now for kids and now i'm currently in insurance and like in the pro the school program to get licensed okay there's a little bit of uh some of the companies that i'm looking at there's a little bit of uh fees you know to set up the business and so i am just thinking maybe i should try to get just a regular job uh any kind of job particularly just to get some income in the door yes yes let me address that i think that's absolutely right i don't want you even considering a side hustle or uh a business that you own in the current situation that you're in so we got a lot going on here because i'm a part of ramsey solutions uh i'm gonna address the financial and the relational here because this is really not so much a purpose question yet i will walk with you and guide you in those days ahead you can call me back when we get to trying to decide what it is you want to do you know with your professional life but right now um you're a single mom essentially and i think you've got to start looking at it that way and i think you are because you said you intimated a minute ago i'm considering moving out um yeah i'm not gonna make this a moral issue okay so don't hear me judging you because you're living with someone okay however you're not married and so your finances should not be in our opinion at ramsey solutions they should not be connected so you keep saying our debt and unless you are you guys in a joint bank account and kind of living no no so there is no our debt right it's your debt so what kind of debt do you have how much i have a 35 grand in student loans and then i owe [Music] okay so i you're breaking up and the child in the background so if i hear 45 000 yes okay so let me so so how many kids do you have at home uh two three um one is four and uh almost four and this is ten months okay so we got a ten month old and a four year old are both of those are both of those kids your boyfriends right now yes okay so that makes this thing really sticky yeah you're not married but he's the father yeah and he doesn't propose last fall oh yeah we were trying we were hoping to get married this um this by the end of this year but there's just been a lot of you know discussions we have kind of been working through yeah by the way something i want yeah listen you cannot marry this dude in my opinion until you guys are on the same page about money yeah it'll rip you guys apart it's already causing you to second guess so here's the reality forget him for the moment okay if you go to work who's watching the four-year-old the 10 month old are you going to put him in daycare do you have family in this area uh no family i don't have to be daycare okay well that's your decision to make you guys aren't married right now you're living together you're not married and you're going i want to be debt free he's not on board yet we hope he gets on board but he needs to understand how important this is to you right and that we are not getting married if we aren't on the same page and i'm not threatening you i'm not trying to break up with you but i'm going back to work because i'm going to pay off my 45 000 in debt because i'm going to be debt free and i'm the child the children's mother and if i have to pay for the daycare i'll find a way but i would prefer that you help me with this and you got to decide is it is this a we thing or is this a me thing because if it's a me thing i get it i can't force you to get on board but i can tell you that we aren't getting married until we are on the same page here and you must support me in this and i think that's a relationship conversation and i i think i think that you're right i would not spend any money on trying to do a business um i think you got to have some clear boundaries and it's going to be hard but i think this is a great job economy right now shawna and you've got a degree and i think you go get the best paying job you can get doesn't even have to be dream job or even on the path necessarily if if if the degree you got was in the area of the dream job all the better and if we can get into that field with a day job that gets us on a ladder but i want the best paying job possible so that we can take care of the kiddos daycare and that you can pay off your debt and i hope relationally you guys figure this stuff out and he helps out with daycare maybe he helps out you know whatever but the reality is it's your debt right now it's not his debt and any debt he has that ain't your debt and i wouldn't pay a nickel towards his debt until you guys were married then his debt becomes our debt and your debt becomes our debt so i think you know what to do i want you to stay focused amanda let's make sure please that shauna has what she needs from us she's new to ramsey so if she needs total money makeover the book from dave ramsey to encourage her um i'd love to put her in ramsey plus to get her the the budgeting app get her in fpu get her in some community so can you take care of her amanda's going to take good care of you shawna because you've got to make steps forward he's got to see how serious you are he's got to see the train leaving the station as it relates to you getting debt free and living the way you want to live and he has to decide do i want to do that do i want to be shauna's husband or do i just want to be the children's father that's the choice before this guy and i think you've got to let him know that 844-747-2577 let's go to tuscaloosa alabama the home of joe's beloved crimson tide john is on the line john you're on the ken coleman show real time there you go say it back to him joe roll tie there he is you made joe's day all right john what's going on hey um i just first of all just want to thank you for everything that you do thank you sir almost every day and everything so thank you john um yes sir um right now i'm a chemical engineering student um at alabama and um i'm just trying to decide like if i want to do this and you know go be a chemical engineer and i don't really know you know what the day to day is for that job or if i want to go to med school because i've been looking at that a lot too and i'm blessed enough that my parents have like a college plan set up to where they could pay for that right because i got a scholarship for um for college and so i'm just trying to decide like what i want to do good because that's been like dagging on me a lot yeah i get it how far into uh chemical engineering are you um i'm a i'm a sophomore but i'm a little bit ahead as far as the curriculum goes great this is perfect timing well john this is actually really easy um i think you need to dive into the chemical engineering there was a reason why you kind of lean this direction and why you started dipping your tone of the water but the good news is you're just wading in you've not you haven't you're not in the deep end and so there's plenty of time for you to pivot this is perfect timing so uh what you want to do is two things uh one i want you to dive into uh trying to get as many conversations as possible certainly a minimum of two to three yes sir five to seven would be ideal two to three will be enough and i want you to talk to people who are in the chemical engineering field could be multiple different positions but if you can through your career services department there or your professors head of the department hey or just your parents you know people you know let's sit down and the good old-fashioned proximity principle is in order to do what i want to do i got to get around people that are doing it and get in places where it is happening now we're not doing it yet we're just going to learn about it and by talking to these folks that are in the field in multiple positions in chemical engineering your head will gather enough knowledge for your heart to go yes or no yes sir or no freaking way you know what i'm talking about yes sir and now we rinse and repeat and we do it in the med okay doctors that smells good to me anesthesiologist i don't care you you just talk to a bunch of people in the medical field and the same thing it's like you're doing a college research paper on those fields and and then we're gonna get some real clarity at that point when your heart's engaged and by the way not just conversations john maybe some shadowing yes sir when you're not in school done some shadowing uh does some shadowing like with doctors but i haven't really gotten to do that um with chemical engineers what was your uh tell me what your emotions were when you were shadowing doctors um i don't know i mean i worked as like a pca in the hospital which is um like assistant to nurses and everything i like that um i like helping out people and everything because i really like to help people um and then i shadowed some doctors and stuff um i like the surgery aspect but i didn't like the like the clinical aspect and so um i'm just trying to figure out that too okay but see now you got some evidence you're you had some good emotional response to some of it and bad emotional response to the other like let's just lean into our emotions when we're doing this meaning your heart skipped a beat about surgery right you're like ooh right yes sir yeah yes sir and then you're kind of like on the other stuff that is what i'm talking about that's what you're looking for that is evidence that should not be john discounted by any of your friends and family that's you listening to your body yes sir you understand what i'm saying yeah definitely people discount that sense got to listen to your body when you're observing work and your body goes ding ding ding ding however it does that gotta listen to that not to everybody else who's got an opinion john you're a bright young man uh super excited for you hey amanda let's give john uh a pre-graduation gift from me the best-selling book the proximity principle he's close to knowing what he wants to do he's he's already in it the proximity principle the early stages let's give him a copy of the book whatever he wants audio uh ebook or hard copy that'd be great speaking of books here we go i was looking at the calendar we're nine days into this team we launched the pre-sell of the brand new book from paycheck to purpose there it is on the screen uh this book is the seven stages to doing what you were born to do that's what it unpacks the subtitle is the clear path to doing work you love i love this it did a big circle around this there it is on the screen thank you nathan that looks better than me holding it uh and this book is now available for pre-order for people who've been following me for a while the question is ken how's it different from the proximity principle the proximity principle is one deep dive principle that lives within one of the stages and it's stage three get connected so that was like a the proximity principle is like a machete for people who know exactly where they're supposed to be going they just want to cut through the jungle and make the connections you get the opportunities the proximity principle is beautiful that it lives within stage three which is unpacked uh in the book from paycheck to purpose there's the book it's now available pre-sell here's the deal i'm bribing you to buy it early because we want to splash big on the best talent we're going to help you see what you love to do passion work-wise and then we're going to help you see what is the driving result that motivates you that's mission we're going to give you the results but when then show you where you are weak with the universal list of talents and passions and missions plus we fill out a purpose statement for you you never have to write a purpose statement power and then talking to people who know you best in areas where you go i didn't realize that is this true and then they'll let you know and so it gives you tremendous tremendous confidence because know why you wouldn't do it go all right let's get to it we've been talking a lot about the jobs and people moving this year massive seismic shift let's go in the news [Music] the great resignation is really the great discontent great headline from gallup.com big fan of gallopin their work uh one of the most reputable if not the most reputable polling firms in the world uh and when i see an article from them that says the great resignation which again is speaking to between 40 to 50 percent of the american workforce thinking about and then actually looking to change jobs this year a great resignation and it's happening big time i talked about this yesterday on the show quick reminder jobs report came out first of the week for june and 3.6 million people 3.7 million people resigned in june alone may it was like 3.4 it's unbelievable crazy numbers nuts people resigning like crazy they're moving on and the the the point here that gallup is making we're going to just pull out a couple things here is that it's really the great discontent and they're absolutely right um employee engagement correlates strongly to employee retention duh the fact that we have to state that repeatedly for leaders blows my mind leaders you're not getting it if you're one of these leaders and you've got people leaving you in mass because they're not engaged you've got to find out why new gallup poll finds that 48 of america's working population is actively job searching and watching for opportunities uh i just mentioned the 3.6 million people that quit in june but most employees are not engaged and that's the whole point it's this is really about disengagement discontent uh global employee engagement according to the latest gallup poll identified global employee engagement rate of 20 to 34 in u.s and canada the loss of productivity of people that aren't engaged and actively disengaged is equal to 18 of their annual salary there's real money attached to this folks for a company of ten thousand employees with an average salary of fifty thousand disengagement is costing that company sixty million dollars a year staggering unbelievable replacing workers requires one half to two times the employee's annual salary so it costs nine thousand dollars a year to keep disengaged workers and between 25 to 100 000 to replace them this is a workplace issue now i don't want to put all of this on leaders okay not all of it you know some people are realizing hey i'm i stepped into something that i wasn't born to do okay so that's why i teach what i teach a lot of people going hey you can do everything you want as a leader to try to engage somebody but if they're not in the right seat of the bus that's where you as a leader comes you got to identify if they're not the right see the bus there's where your responsibility comes in but some people just go hey i fell into this career it was never the right thing for me i'm not doing what i want to do now i want to chase that that makes total sense but where a leader can identify this and realize and help them see this that is a good move move them out but you got to be aware when you hire leaders whether or not this in fact is the right place for them that's where my assessment comes in to get clear career assessment leaders you need to be using this in the interview process helping you and the potential employee realize is this where i need to be so it's really really interesting stuff um so much more in the article but i just wanted to point out the staggering cost to companies and how this is i mean this affects the economy this affects efficiency this affects so many things and when you have massive change like the pandemic that force change on people they start to look at the rest of their life you change their rhythms you change their realities in certain areas so now they look at every other area of their life they go do i want to do this why am i doing this and so thus the big jump and change it's unbelievable and it's not going to change i believe this is the first wave i think there is going to be this great resignation for years to come i think it's going to be a professional reawakening i think that's what's happening right now and so if that's you i want to help you pre-order the new book from paycheck to purpose call the show take the get clear career assessment call the show talk to people begin to have the conversation what do i really want to do with my life and why look inward at your talent your passion and your mission the clues are there it's a big giant neon flashing arrow if you're just willing to dig and to look 844-747-2577 is the number let's go to ben in portland maine then you're on the ken coleman hi ken how's it going i'm living the dream ben what's going on so uh recently i got medically disqualified from being a truck driver and i had to take a warehouse job but i had to take a seventeen thousand dollar a year pay cut ah sorry about that yeah that's kind of rough on the finances up after uh because i'm currently on baby step two okay and i i'm kind of just lost where to go because i really don't want to be in the warehouse i've been truck driving for the past six years i loved what i was doing it's just government says i can't do it anymore well is the government right pretty much okay so so you you're medically disqualified um does that mean you can't drive for anybody else or just the government i mean if are you that incapacitated from being behind the wheel so the way the med card system works is if i wanted to take any job over the road the federal government requires me to have that card to be able to drive yeah but i'm not talking about the federal government i'm saying you love being behind the wheel driving right i do and was it an 18 wheeler yes okay so i'm asking you are you disqualified medically from driving i'm not even getting specific right now i'm just saying are you medically disqualified from driving in the private sector yes okay all right we're being very cryptic so i don't so here's what this boils down to no it's okay i'm not trying to get in your business what i'm trying to get at is here's what we have to figure out you and me we have to figure out what did you love most about being a truck driver was it man i just like being on the open road i like being behind the wheel i kind of like the autonomous nature of it as long as i show up when i'm supposed to show up and deliver it kind of on my own i mean what was it about that job that you loved because we've got to identify that for the purpose of saying what's the closest thing to that and it's less about being behind the wheel and on the open road although i'm guessing that was something you really enjoyed it's more about the autonomous nature of it is my guess am i right or am i wrong you're definitely correct on that okay so what kind of work can you do physically that gives you a lot of autonomy where you're kind of left alone as long as you deliver what you're supposed to deliver does that make sense it does yes so give me some ideas i mean right now i think my little side hustle of knives sharpening lead smithing uh but that doesn't generate enough income no no no no i i look i don't want you to get so specific yet i'm saying okay what kind of work could you do all right let's let me let me take a step back number one i'm going to give you my get clear career assessment you got to take it i'm going to give it to you and you got to take it because it's going to give you a whole lot more clarity um but let's try to walk through it high level what kind of work do you love to do just think about the task or the role what kind of work do you really love you look forward to it when you think about it you go oh man i can't wait uh when you're in the middle of it time seems to stand still tell me logistics interesting is that um more of a mental logistics or is it physical as well do you understand what i'm saying like is it a physical transformation too or you kind of go okay this needs to happen in this order and then i'm putting it together or making it happen or is it more the mental aspect of going what needs to happen here in almost more process versus things does that make sense yeah it's uh more of the mental process for me okay do you have any physical limitations any medical condition that would keep you from using your brain that way and being a guy who's deep inside of processes and systems making things run more efficiently no great so what you need to do is identif so let me let me ask another question before i give you what to do you love that work and and the result of that work is efficiency right and solution you love that that result make you feel good if you knew you were spending most of your day driving efficiency and solutions how would you feel at the end of the day that would be awesome okay great so my career assessment would basically spit that out for you okay we did a quick version i still want you to take it i'm going to give it to you because it's going to really hone in but here's what you've got to be looking at now yes you should not be in a warehouse because that's manual labor it's not engaging your brain however that warehouse job might lead to a logistics job because see the warehouse is the manifestation of the logistics you see that yeah so i think you got to be looking at logistics jobs uh everything you can look up look in the logistics field this is not difficult to find begin to see the type of jobs out there and spend some time with job descriptions and when you read job descriptions that make your heart go that's what we're looking for right and so then we pay attention to what does it take for me to get qualified to do those things do i need to do a degree not necessarily is it just some certifications or is it just experience where i kind of get in and work my way up that might be the path for you is a job in logistics where you're a guy who's analyzing organizing right processing that's your jam ben and that's great and there's no medical roadblock there but here's the deal hang on the line uh amanda let's get him a link and a code to my get clear career assessment you can get it for 30. at kencolma.com uh this is a game changer and listen to me ben you got to take it you're going to get a report it's going to take about 25 to 30 minutes it's worth the time folks it's a deep dive it's going to fill out a professional purpose statement for you and it's going to show you your top talents passions and your driving mission i think it's going to come out my guess is you're going to score high on solution and high on efficiency under mission and there's no question you're gonna be loving analyzing work there's no question about that organizing type work and you're gonna have all the talents to back that up so go take it my gift to you sir um your best days are ahead of you the good news is you love
