coming up next I'll reveal 12 things that people decide within seconds of meeting you we'll give you three clear steps to overcome your fear we'll take your chats and your calls it all starts right now coming to you live from Ramsey studios in Nashville you're joining a conversation about who you are what you were created to do where you want to do it and how you can get there it's all about you because you were created to fill a unique role that means you are incredibly needed tremendously valued and that also means you've got to do it I don't believe you get the option of just sitting on the bench of life we need you in the game simply put somebody out there needs you to be you and that's why the ken Coleman show is here it's all about you so let's go 12 things that people decide within seconds of meeting you this article came across my desk and I said oh my gosh this is amazing because I have always believed that when people say well you can't judge a book by it's cover that that's actually garbage like somewhere a grandmother or somebody who's well-meaning came up with this idea and basically what they were saying is don't judge people which I'm all about not judging people all right all right you got your own problems don't judge other people however when we talk about first impressions the fact of the matter is that all of us judge if we want to use that in a light sense of the word we create impressions of others instantaneously so I'm gonna run through this list this is unbelievable and I'll tell you why this is important to know we know from research that it takes just three seconds for someone determine whether they like you and want to do business with you so there's 12 assumptions that people make about you I'm sure there's more but this is all backed up with data here we go people judge how much they should trust you after only a tenth of a second Princeton researchers did a study with 245 university students gave him a tenth of a second to rate the trustworthiness of actors faces then they had another 128 students who were able to take as long as they wanted to decide whether or not an actor face was trustworthy the results from both groups the group that took a tenth of a second in the group took as long as they want were eerily similar so they found that somebody who's making their mind up they may be right or wrong but they're making their mind up on whether or not you're trustworthy instantly number two people also judge your socio-economic status just by looking at you a Dutch study found that people wearing name-brand clothes we're seen as higher status and wealthier than folks wearing non designer clothes people number three people determine how smart they think you are after just meeting you Loyola Marymount University did a study and it found that looking at your conversation partner in the eye might help people think you're more intelligent they had 182 college students engage in an assigned topic of conversation in pairs for five minutes partners in rated each other how smart they seemed results showed that people who were perceived as more intelligent or the ones that held their partner's gaze while talking so now that's a win right there and by the way we've got younger generations that just don't know how to look people in the eye when they talk to them number one it's really just good manners but also people think you're smarter number four your appearance can also signal how dominant people think you are listen to this small University of Pennsylvania experiment undergrads looked at 25 photos of men some was shaped heads and others with full heads of hair the students rated the men with shaved heads as more dominant how about that it's a guy looking through the window right now he's got his bald sir people gonna think you're more dominant than me so don't worry about being bald it's a good thing let's see if you want to look successful number five you want to look successful get your clothes tailored British study 274 people had them look at faceless photos of men and tailored versus non tailored suits they rated the guys and tailored suits is more successful six people are just judging your status they're making assumptions about your earning potential small 2011 study of college students who were showing photos of male models dressed in business or casual attire then they rated these folk these these male models the ones that we're crisply dressed meaning more business attire were rated that they might make more money and get promoted sooner 7 people are looking to see whether you're adventurous during the first meeting they're not just looking at your parents now we're shifting the way you look and move as far as like your body language is where this is shifting this small study group of students were showing video clips of other students walking some with looser more relaxed walking gates others with tighter ones they tended to equate the looser gates with an extroverted more adventurous person I think what are we at 7 here I don't even know where we're at here people can tell if you have an aggressive personality shape just by your excuse me they can tell if you have an aggressive personality just by your face shape they looked at a bunch of men this is a Canadian spirit spearmint and undergrad women looked at a bunch of different men still shots of them playing video games so they're leaned in and they're looking at their face shape and they measured that the rounder face regardless of of expression the bigger the facial I guess spacing then they were more aggressive people might be able to tell how religious you are by simply looking at how you hold yourself University caliber Clee 123 attic undergrads 123 undergrads assess 113 people's religiosity by looking at full body photographs those who appeared to be smiling energetic relaxed and neat were judged to be more religious and by the way that actually turned out to be true and then in 50 milliseconds most people can accurately predict if you consider yourself an extrovert again looking at faces a German research study was able to determine that extroverts generally have more cheerful expressions and then people make assumptions on your leadership ability by looking at you they had a hundred researches as undergrads to review headshots of a hundred managing partners at top law firms and when they looked at their faces they were able to determine the ones that they thought were more so well actually were they had a greater profitability I think that's a confidence issue there's what I'm seeing and finally people can decide if they'd like to be friends with you a few minutes after meeting you and this is a chemistry thing 2015 paper by the Journal of social science found that those who are agreeable or friendly open to experience in conscientious or hard-working and organized are more likely to experience friendship chemistry so why am i rolling through all of those things one simple reason the way you look your appearance the way that you act your body language is sending a message it may not be the correct message but it is sending a message and I'm telling you when you think about being on purpose and moving up in your career and doing work that you love and getting ahead you've got to be cognizant of the message the nonverbal messages that you're sending and again this is about your appearance so guys if you dress like a slob it's not a good thing should I spend the extra money on tailoring my clothes yeah should I get out an iron and an ironing board yes should I take care of myself shave should I be in good shape all those things yeah because here's the deal you may be missing a great opportunity simply because you are being judged by some easy to fix nonverbal cues so you got to be aware of this stuff folks it really matters eight four four seven four seven two five seven seven is the number eight four four seven four seven two five seven seven we'll get to your chats and a little bit we've already got Dave fired a chat from London how about that so we'll get to that a little bit later in the program but to the phones we go Rebecca joins us in Moses Lake Washington Rebecca you're on the Ken Coleman show I can thanks for having me on well I'm thrilled to have you on what's going on to two girls I haven't had a job since high school and I am looking into starting a virtual assistant business yeah I have an associates and medical assisting and I'm getting a bachelor's with significant social media marketing administrative assistants and commercial fundamentals nice I don't know how to start because everyone everyone wants five years of experience you know yeah but if I understood you correctly you're not just looking for an administrative assistant role you're trying to start your own business that is a if I understood you right is a remote kind of an e assistant and so you're offering not just your services but the ideas eventually you have other people who are filling this role and you're kind of brokering that relationship and my understanding that that's why I thought okay good that's the best thing okay good because that was going to be in my vise forget about starting a business that involves placing other people let's just get you to a situation why do you feel like you've got to start it as your own business versus going to work for some amazing companies who are already doing this so just putting yourself in the roster and all of a sudden you have an executive who picks you and you go to work and you're not worried about anything other than just serving that executive well yeah why would you do it on your own try to find your own executive who hires you and you do it remotely versus going to work for again I'm gonna tell you what I'm talking about here ballet de la Y is one of the leaders in the industry if not the number one virtual assistant company in America and I know the owners Brian and Shannon miles they're world-class in fact you could call ballet today and say Ken Coleman sent me there this is not an advertisement they're not paying me to say that I actually know these people and they're really good at what they do so why wouldn't you just get qualified and and go work for them and then if you want to do it for yourself later once you get in and get the experience then I'm okay with that but I just think that's the better move am I missing something yeah hey start with them and here's the deal just so people know I'm not advertising them right now go search other companies that are competitors to blame and and sign up with them and see who's the best experienced the best fit but they'll hire you and they'll connect you to an executive or to somebody who needs that virtual assistant work and boy oh boy you're off and running mm-hmm way to go Rebecca I expect you to contact at least two or three of those virtual assistant companies today yes okay yeah get after it way to go Rebecca thanks for the call eight four four seven four seven two five seven seven we go to Cleveland Ohio next where James joins us James you're on the Ken Coleman show hey I eat on their can James I'm living the dream what's going on I'm pretty good hey James let me stop you here for a moment I want to serve you but I feel like I'm coming through the car speakerphone or there's a lot of interference can we try to fix that real quick yeah I think so try to keep that phone close to your mouth and talk clearly let's start over go yeah I was interested again to the financial advisory roles um and I actually just started applying to a couple of financial institutions and trying to further my career and that area and I just want to know and I'm taking a right actions upon applying the right way or is there anything I need to do well can you be more specific tell me what you've done and what you're unsure about what you want my advice on and I'll dive in there tell me more well about six months ago I just got to taking on a financial planning course at a community college okay and enrolled in a business course so I have been on trying to further my education home and the financial industry yes I'm good with numbers math so that I know okay so so is your question am i heading the right direction and you want me to help you with confirmation that this is something in your sweet spot yes so here we go into that row all right so here's a let's go let's just do a quick confirmation and then we're gonna talk about what you need to do to get there okay so let's walk through the three elements of the sweet spot they've got to all come together all right what you do best James are you really good with numbers and math and and just you really understand all I mean you just have a gift at analyzing and number crunching and just how numbers work yes great nothing I wonder sorry all right so check that box you've got the talent all right it's definitely something that you do really really well it's what you do best okay now we look at passion what you love to do do you like advising and giving people advice after you've been able to crunch the numbers and come up with a plan do you really enjoy the idea of problem solving and then solution providing as it relates to someone's financial future yeah great there we go check the box and then finally we just kind of touched on it it's results right this is mission do you want do you love the idea of waking up every day and going home every day knowing that you made a difference in funding helping someone fund their dreams yeah enough actually why I wanted to call you today I just took your assessment online and see if I was on in the right career path and the assessment told me that I wasn't in the right role in the right place why what assessment here your job assessment yeah you said you took my should I quit my job quiz yeah but but I I that's great that you're not where you're supposed to be now but we're not you're not where you want to be anyway you're just asking me is this somewhere where I should be going so that should I quit my job quiz is based on what you're doing right now so so what was your result the result was that I wasn't in the right place in the right role and that's why I kinda feel at the end of the day I'm don't feel like I'm so full in the full purpose all right so let's helping other people well let's dive in so why is it that you think you're not know right role what is your current role right now uh what doulas shipping receiving work so we do warehouse shipping work okay I thought you said you were a financial advisor now no I was looking to get into that industry and I don't know yeah okay but I'm confused brother my should I quit my job quiz is about your current job no wonder you got the answer that you got of course you're in the wrong role in the wrong place you're in shipping and receiving in a warehouse you want to be dealing with numbers right so Mike my quiz is absolutely spot-on correct right but you're asking me do I want should I go into financial advising is that the right fit for me and we just walk through that so you're confusing my should I quit my job quiz with what you want to do in the future that's not measuring that it's measuring what you're doing now are you understanding what I'm saying yeah all right well then there's no confusion so so here's the deal let's get back to your initial question your initial question is am i pursuing the right thing absolutely financial advising certainly fits we just walk through it on the air now the question is how do you get there you use the proximity principle you start getting around people that are in that space while you're learning so we just went through stage one let's get clear Stage two is get qualified right now you're in the process of getting qualified the community college degree there's some other licensing there's some things that you need to do to be qualified so you need to know that you've got the full list of this is what I'm going to have to learn and do to get a ticket to the dance how much is that going to cost me based on my finance reality how long is that going to take that's where you are you're in the get qualified stage now as you were getting qualified you can step into stage three which is get connected so that's the proximity principle in order to do a James wants to do he's got to be around people that are doing it and in places where it is happening so Madison if James does not have my proximity principle the number one best-selling book James I'm gonna give you the book whatever format you want it in I'm giving it to you today because I write explicitly and specifically on who you need to know and where you need to be an opportunity will come knocking on your door so get it that's why I wrote the book 844 seven four seven two five seven seven but here's the deal if you're new to the show and you you've not heard me unpacked the proximity principle here's what James is gonna end up doing he's gonna start hanging around professional financial advisors who were winning in his zip code he figures out what his mutual connection is and he asked them for coffee or lunch he'll buy and when he's sitting with these professionals he's humble and he's hungry he's saying hey I want to be where you are one day and you can tell me so much you can give me knowledge and you can give me wisdom and I've got some prepared questions here and I want to know how you got where you are what do you think I need to do what's the multiple different paths that I could take to get where you are anybody who's got a decent heart is gonna say yes to that because they feel valuable everybody loves giving their opinion and so they're gonna give you all that knowledge and wisdom but then here's the deal at the end you say hey who are some other people that you need that I need to be around would you connect me to them what are some places where I can get myself in where I can observe and shadow and and what we talk about a place for it about a place to learn a place to practice this could be a volunteer type opportunity those men and women who are winning in the field you want to be in are the key holders they got the keys so that's how this works eight four four seven four seven two five seven seven is the number we will get back to your calls a little bit later in the program real quick if you need a little bit of juice a couple times a month on a Monday and you like something that's short sweet to the point you need to sign up for the Ken Coleman show newsletter Ken Coleman comm slash subscribe a half weeks if we've launched live here on a YouTube also subscribe if you're not subscribed and hey share the episode you can do all of that right there under the video window I could do the OL one of these deals you know if I do this Nathan you know that means they're kind of right there below me like right down there that's where you do that right down in that space it's kind of fun I'm doing a Vanna White how many people watch it know who Vanna White is give me a thumbs up probably nobody you guys know Vanna White as u Millennials Madison do you know who Vanna White is Wheel of Fortune Oh No kidding alright I never know these days I guess with people out there who are with me many whoo Vanna White is all right very good all right let's go to the chat room Dave a from London he says can I have a dream of doing someone I've been dreaming rather of doing a counting since I was 12 I could not get the apprenticeship so I decided to try business admin I kind of like business admin but should I still do accounting yeah I shared some research Joe recently on the show I can't remember when it was but I shared some research that psychologists have been able to go back and track that at the age of 9 and 10 years of age listen to this Dave a and the rest of you by the time we get to 9 and 10 years of age the things we begin to fantasize about and wonder about I'm talking in the pure fantasizing here like you begin to think what could I be when I grow up what might I want to do I wonder if this could be something that I want to do that they find for professionals at the very early days of thinking through that that it reveals that there's something to that doesn't mean that every nine and 10 year old that walks in parents and says hey I want to be this when I grow up does it mean that that's exactly what's gonna happen but they have found ties to that and so here's my point Dave a you said since you were 12 that's a very specific age and that means you're taking me back to a very clear moment in time and that's the moment the origin when you said I think I like numbers I think I like crunchy numbers I think I like to do that for people but she didn't get the apprenticeship and for that reason maybe you felt some rejection Dave a-and then that created some doubt and then you went another direction and here you are all these years later and I think the reason you text it or you chat it in here is because you wanted to hear if I think that is something that you should take serious and I'm telling you you need to listen to your heart because 12-year old Dave a certainly was interested in accounting and so I would go explore it I just gave this advice to James who called in it's the same advice if you've been watching the last few minutes we'll do a quick rewind use the proximity principle start getting around people that are winning in accounting and when you spend time with these people and ask them think of it as a college research paper I'm gonna go do a college research paper on a successful accountant and I'm gonna tell you everything about this successful accountant here's what's happening you are clarifying and verifying if you could do a research paper on all the things a successful accountant does what a day looks like what the challenges are what the victories are all that stuff and your heart goes hey I don't want to do that you've just verified you don't want to do accounting but off on the other hand you do that same research and your heart quickens you go oh I would love to do that all day every day now we've verified that it is in fact something to do that's the process let's go to Miguel Miguel Cardona ken I'd like to start a Bachelor of Science degree in statistics at age 24 but I feel like I can't afford to be another four years without income should I try to do it part-time yes Miguel I don't like the assumption that you led with their that I can't afford to go for years without income who said we got to do that it has never been easier to get a degree online it's never been easier there's so many people out there doing online degrees and you can do it part-time which means you can budget for it and pay-as-you-go absolutely you should move forward on that absolutely megha sports man 79 there's our username of the day he writes in Ken I'm getting ready to start a new job tomorrow in a field that I have no knowledge in I'm 40 years old and I've been out of work for five months and they like my personality so much that they wanted me what do you think be honest with me Ken I'm really afraid of failing this is so good this is the Segway of all segways into my teaching for today I said I was going to share with you and I am in moments the three steps to overcome fear so let's talk mega sports man 79 here's the good news they liked your personality so much they knew you didn't have any knowledge and probably hardly any experience and they still said we want you mega sports man 79 so step into it you haven't been at work in five months you need some juice by no means mega sports man 79 are you saying that this is the job I'm gonna have for the rest of my life you're not saying that what you're saying is I've been given an opportunity because of my personality that ought to give you some juice you ought to sit up a little taller and you take that job and you get in there and you do the best that you can and if you can't learn the skills and you can tell them later obviously guys you like me I like you I appreciate it this isn't a good fit for me I'm moving on but it's gonna give you some income which is gonna give you some inspiration and it gets you back in the game absolutely take it don't worry about fear all right here's the Segway mega sports man 79 and the rest of you right now that are dealing with fear can I set you free listen you cannot eliminate fear but you can overcome it I want you to grab that before I give you three steps to overcoming fear you must first realize that fear never goes away I still deal with fear anybody who is a human anybody who desires to make some progress in some air of your life we'll always be confronting fear so fear is part of the deal so the mindset has to be way second I can't eliminate fear so I'm gonna start thinking about fear differently it's not about eliminating it I'm never gonna be able to ever time for your pops up doesn't make me a weak person that's what I want you to get but you can't overcome fear here's how three steps three steps to overcome fear I don't want to walk you through these the first one is you have got to identify your fear call it out specifically if you've been watching the show or listening the show for any amount of time you've heard me do this with callers I will stop the entire conversation and drive into the fear and I'll say what specifically you're afraid of name it describe it and the reason we want to do that is we want to expose it when it's bouncing around inside of your head it's scary it's massive and it feels like you can't even face it so we get it out of our head two ways we either write it down on a piece of paper so we can see the fear or we share with somebody what the fear is and I'm your guy okay if you can't talk to anybody else you'd call me I'm here five days a week now that's step one step two is once we've identified it and we've shared it with somebody or we've written it down and we got it outside of our head we have to deconstruct the fear and here's what I mean by that fear is a liar so if your fear is saying something like you don't have what it takes you're a complete imposter and people are going to find out that you're an impostor and they're going to disown you because nobody likes a fake and a fraud I'm making this up but that's a real fear that I hear for people okay if that's the fear then we deconstruct that we say wait is that true if I somehow fail or I don't succeed as quickly as I'd like our people that know me and love me truly going to disown me and say that I'm a big fraud and fake no well if the fear is hey Ken if this doesn't work and I switch careers and I go take this job and it doesn't work they're gonna fire me I may not be able to get a job again and and my family's gonna be homeless and were gonna start they see how silly that sounds when we actually say it and we deconstruct it is that true so deconstruct it is that true am I gonna starvin am I gonna be homeless no so now we've deconstructed it and so now we say okay if this is what the lie is what's the truth the truth is I may fail I may stumble but I'm gonna learn something from this and actually I'm moving forward on purpose anyway we're not just walking blindly we're not jumping off of a cliff without a plan so there's actually all that deep deep pain and rejection and all that stuff it's not gonna happen anyway so that's the truth haha and then we relax and so the third step is refocus now that we know the truth we refocus our brain on the truth so instead of failure thinking fear thinking I really think a future based on positive results that I know this can happen and I know if I apply myself I get better I stay with it I'm gonna get there now this is what you tell your parents basically what I just did for you folks was giving you a three-step process that essentially you tell your kids this is exactly what you would do what are you afraid of sweetheart what are you afraid of bud okay well that's just sent true this is gonna happen see we're deconstructing it as parents and then what do we do we go nah don't worry about that you're fine your friends are gonna support you they're gonna he's gonna be fine trust me you're gonna get through this you look back on this and I'm gonna tell you something right now it's gonna be the greatest thing never having you it's great change and your kid goes okay all right hope you're right mom and dad right and so what are we trying to do we're refocusing our kids on the truth and so when we have a mindset that is focused on the truth and on positive outcomes then the fear hear me full circle here the fear isn't eliminated the fear just gets really be really quiet and we don't hear it and we don't see it so those are the three steps to overcoming your fear eight four four seven four seven two five seven seven one of the things people are really afraid of is dealing with updating their resume and putting themselves out there and I'm gonna tell you this right now resumes are worthless without a relationship that's why I created our resume guide we've had over a hundred thousand people download this guide which includes a template I'm gonna explain how you flip your resume why you flip it and we give you the template to actually do it you're gonna stand out but it's not about the resume template I'm gonna teach you in our resume guide how to use your web of connections the proximity principle to get yourself in a position where your resume is just something that looks beautiful and it stands out because it's been handed to somebody by a mutual relationship and then when they say it they go whoa this is really cool this is really different so check it out Ken Coleman dot-com slash resume Ken Coleman dot-com slash resume it's absolutely free by the way free so go get it eight four four seven four seven two five seven seven is the number to jump in we go to Spencer who joins us in Orlando Florida Spencer you're on the Ken Coleman show again what's up Spencer hey so we're just okay so hold on I got I didn't know what it was at first so now I can go by the way what Spencer and I just did is the way a lot of people in the South communicate to each other that's like a wholes that's a whole conversation am i right I'm excited what's going on Spencer hey Ken so my question for you is you know or I just could give you a little background I'm 20 years old I live in Orlando and so I knew at a young age that I wanted to get involved in music I just love you know recording I believe that's where I belong you know and I have a but you know friends and family that you don't believe in me and they tell me the same thing so I'm headed towards that direction I tried to apply for school that'll teach me this trade to get involved and guys this recording engineering and I didn't move forward with it because it was tough for us financially and then I tried again recently and it's more doable for us great so so my question for you is I could start next month my wife is supportive of me she knows that I have a ton on this but she wants to wait till the fall and like I'm ready to get started I'm excited about it I'm super pumped but he shouldn't she you know she's very analytical she likes to plan things let's just break it down so you're asking me should you start next month or listen to your wife and start in the fall okay right so why does she want to wait to the fault tell me her reasoning she's analytical so she's thought through this tell me her why uh she just wants to be like financially prepared to take on look like the financial aspect you're getting involved in school she's a smart lady I like your wife already I like your wife a lot so here's the deal Spencer is she right is she right that if you guys delay you getting into this school that if you delay it to the fall that it is gonna make things easier for you guys this is a yes or no answer Ranieri yeah yes yes I believe so look I think we can make it happen now but well no no Spencer I love you I love you bro Spencer I love you bro I screamed I gave you the move back okay I love you man no but but but but I got you I got you in the corner and I gotta call you out okay yeah I didn't ask you if you could do it now I said is your wife right in saying that it would be better for you guys financially are you driving an emergency vehicle while you're talking to me and you're backing up let's go I'll explain sir I'm distracting oh it's the consent its construction in the back I Paulo does know dude I'm having fun with you here's the deal your wife is right and I know you can do it tomorrow but the fact of the matter is you agree with her that it would be easier for you to hear what I just said Spencer it'd be easier for you two together as a married couple she's your partner she's locked arms with you she's a great woman and she feels like it's better to wait you agree it's better to wait you need to wait because you need her on board and you need her in a safe place mentally to be the support that she wants to be for you so you got to support her too and you know what we're talking about the difference of six to seven months seven eight months okay whatever it is what month is it is it February yeah there we go all right so you get my point Spencer do this do this not just to honor your wife because I believe you should honor her feelings but she's right right you said it not me not to mention the age-old proverb from I don't know who said it but boy are they right folks I'm quickly approaching 22 years of marriage thank you very much happy wife happy life come on Spencer that may be the most valuable thing I ever say on this show so I should say it over and over again a quick thought on this don't miss if you're married or you're in a deeply committed relationship do not miss the invaluable support of your significant other if they're supporting you and cheering you on you better not miss how crazy important that is to you on your journey so listen if they're all in but they've got concerns and they need to be in on the timeline - it's not your time it's our time line get that way to go Spencer appreciate you brother I love the Wu but it was really loud that was great that's kind of a new greeting but something I'm kind of used to in the South I make that joke when I speak at live events all the time I'll go around the room and I'll say how many of you from
